Daniel turned his head to look out the window as he heard the sound of the car driving in. He frowned as he saw the familiar car driving up the driveway to the front porch. He let out a helpless sigh as he put down his work and walked out of the room to greet the guest who had arrived unceremoniously.“Grandpa, why are you here?” Daniel asked in a helpless tone as he came down the stairs.“Bastard… what are you doing?” Grandpa Holston lost his temper as soon as he arrived “If I don’t come now, am I waiting to collect your remains?”“Grandpa, calm down.” Daniel held Grandpa Holston’s arm as he coaxed “It’s not as serious as you think.”“Not serious??? Not serious???” Grandpa Holston repeated himself panting in anger “Do I have to wait for the Holston name to be erased from history before it becomes serious?”“Grandpa, calm down.” Daniel spoke calmly “Let’s discuss whatever you need to say in the study.”Grandpa Holston shook his head helplessly as he allowed Daniel to walk him to the st
Emile had no idea why she was feeling tired even though she had rested in the afternoon, she felt sleepy soon after dinner and couldn’t stop yawning.“Emile, why don’t you go and sleep?” Grandpa Holston smiled as he saw her struggling to stay awake; she looked extremely adorable as she struggled to stop yawning as she didnt want to appear rude.“I haven’t seen grandpa in such a long time.” Emile pouted as she sat holding his hand, refusing to let go although she was still yawning “I want to chat with grandpa for a little longer.”“Be good… go rest.” Grandpa Holston coaxed in a gentle voice, as though he was talking to a young child “You can talk to grandpa any time you want. Don’t spoil your body by being tired.”Emile hesitated for a few minutes before she gave in and went upstairs to rest. Grandpa Holston watched her walking upstairs with a heavy heart. He didn’t want to cheat his Danton’s treasure who wholeheartedly treated him as her own grandfather… but… this was his grandson’s
Emile woke the next morning feeling much more relaxed than she was feeling the day before. She greeted Daniel warmly as they sat for breakfast. Daniel had a reminiscing expression on his face as he watched the cheerful Emile; it seemed like they had gone back to the time when they were slowly falling in love with each other, a few months after Michelle left.“Um??” Emile blushed as she quirked her eyebrows; she felt embarrassed by Daniel’s hot gaze.Daniel shrugged; a gentle smile hung on his face.“Is there something on my face?” Emile pouted “Why are you looking at me like that?”“Why can’t I look at my wife?” Daniel decided to be shameless; he also wanted to test the waters.Emile didn’t know how to respond to such shamelessness and turned her face with a ‘Hymph’"Where's grandpa?" Emile asked as she noted that Grandpa Holston had not come down for breakfast which was contrary to her memory. In her memory, Grandpa Holston had always insisted on having meals together whenever they h
Daniel had no intention of keeping Emile locked, probably because he was too conceited; whether it was his plan or the love that Emile had for him or the location he chose to hide till things normalized, in his mind they were all fool proof. He had no reason to restrict Emile’s movements.Carl’s words echoed in his mind; the best way for her to accept this as her reality was to mingle the chaos in the mind with freedom, giving her the impression that as long as she wants to do it, she was free to do it. Restricting her would give strength to the doubt in her mind whereas freedom would tug at the existing chaos without making sense, gradually fading to an unattended corner, and finally to be dismissed. In the evening, he took her for a stroll at the beach and to the night markets that would spring into life every evening, bustling with activity. Daniel wasn’t particularly interested in these cheap stalls, but he knew Emile liked them as he had read about them in Abbey’s travel memoirs.
Daniel and Emile had dinner in silence before Emile excused herself by saying she was tired and went upstairs to sleep. Daniel waited for about an hour before going upstairs. If she was awake, he planned to tell her that he came check up on her, to see if she was comfortable or needed anything. If she was asleep, he intended to play the hypnotic byte that Dr Burkhart had instructed. If all went well, then tonight was the last time he would have to play it.Emile was fast asleep when Daniel entered; he quietly walked over to her bedside and watched her. She wasn’t sleeping peacefully, it seemed like she was tormented by her dreams. He stretched out his hand to smooth out the knot between her brows but hesitated and pulled back. He didn’t want to risk walking her up. He played the music and sat for an hour before quietly leaving the room.Emile was woken up the next morning by the loud screeching of car tires. Well, it wasn’t exactly morning, more like early afternoon. She didn’t know w
Emile hurried downstairs with an embarrassed smile; if she could have her way, she would rather not see anyone considering how long she slept for…but she was hungry, her stomach was rudely protesting and there was nothing she could do about it other than going downstairs and eating her fill.“Good morning, Madam.” The butler stood in attention as he greeted her, turning a blind eye to her embarrassment.“Morning” Emile whispered, her face turning pink as she lowered her head and made a beeline for the dining table.Carl and Daniel had finished her argument and reached a consensus and walked over to the dining table.“How are you feeling?” Carl asked as he took a seat opposite Emile.“I don’t feel any different.” Emile shrugged as she sipped her coffee “How long before you give me a clean bill?”“Let me give you another check after you finish breakfast.” Carl smiled amiably “That should be the last of our association.”“Great” Emile clapped her hands happily before smiling awkwardly “N
Daniel eyes darkened as he saw the medicine bowl still sitting untouched at the bedside table when he went in the evening to call Emile for their evening walk. He feigned a helpless expression as he walked towards her bed and sat beside her.“Wife, why are you acting childishly?” Daniel lifted his hand to gently caress her face but she hmphed and turned away from him. She wasn't being pretentious; she was truly angered by the man in front of her. 'He wanted to abort her child, what right did he have?'“Wife, I don’t want to do it any more than you do. It is after all my child too.” Daniel sighed with a pained expression; no one could find any flaws with his expression, even if they tried.“But you are more important to me. I cannot bear to have anything go wrong with you. These past few years, only I know how I survived. I could see you at arm’s length but couldn’t see your smile or voice…. It was worse than killing me… I never want to go through that again.”One could hear the heart
Emile sat by the windowsill hugging her knees and looking at the endless night with a desolate expression trying to filter out the annoying sounds coming from the master bedroom. She let out a soft sigh thought about her miserable existence. Eight years of infatuated love and 3 years of marriage with absolute devotion left her with nothing but endless shame and an empty house. In the three years of marriage, there was not a day that the newspapers and entertainment world did not have a news of the colorful scandals for her husband. Emile rested her chin on her knees as she thought back to the folly of her youth. She met Daniel during her first year of university at a gathering of family friends. If at first, she was mesmerized by his handsome face and his domineering aura, later she fell in love with his brilliance and character. Emile was an outstanding bubbly and beautiful girl. She was the goddess in the hearts of almost all the young men at her university, but she had eyes only
