Emile’s end was not as chaotic as Chris’s. Other than the fact that she was getting heavier and the usual troubles of being six months pregnant, there was nearly nothing exciting. But that was until this morning. This morning was special as, as they were having breakfast, Raphael’s men bought back news. These were results from their investigation of university enrollments. The news that Raphael’s men bought back confirmed Emile’s intuition. Grace had indeed enrolled and completed her bachelors and masters in Archeology. However, there was no information after her graduation. “Shall I pass this information to Chris?” Raphael didn’t know what Emile wanted to do but he was impressed with her deduction. Honestly speaking, he didn’t hold much hope for her theory; he was just indulging her on behalf of Chris. “No” Emile shook her head “We haven’t found Grace. I want to find her.” “What do you have in mind?” Raphael no longer looked down on her ideas. She had earned his respect. “How abo
Emile and Raphael arrived back at the Dupont estate on Friday afternoon, just in time for Chris’s arrival. Emile wasn’t worried about the shadow guards or Anne and Dolly snitching on her. She had already convinced them with her twisted logic. It would be a lie to say that Chris didn’t notice that something was amiss when he arrived at the Dupont estate. What exactly, he couldn’t be bothered to think once he saw the beautiful smile on his beloved wife’s face. Even the normally astute and observant Chris missed all the telltale signs and immersed himself in the happiness of re-uniting with his beloved wife; not that Emile did anything to let him down. Raphael looked at everything around him and couldn’t help but chuckle looking the young man whom he admired the most, turn into a fool. He had even made a bet with Emile that Chris would find out what they were up to even before they sat down to eat dinner. Looks like he was destined to lose… the weekend passed by with the husband and wi
Darcy and Eva landed back at the private landing strip for the Walters in early hours of the morning. All the Walters without exception were present to welcome them home. Eva felt overwhelmed even though she knew the line- up was not for her. She called out respectfully to Adam and Elizabeth before turning to nod at the rest of the family members. No one took any offense. The thing that surprised the Walter women was how lovey-dovey second brother and sister-in-law became…... but then again, perhaps the life and death gave second brother a rude shock, waking him up to cherish those around him. The only one who was not happy about her second brother’s enlightenment was Victoria. For her, love and hate were well defined; just by going to through gates of hell wouldn’t change a thing unless that person exchanged their life as a price of hatred. Eva definitely didn’t have any saving grace by her books. If anything, she was an opportunist who took advantage of her brother’s amnesia. But e
Chris: “Dad there is one more thing.” “Um??” Adam raised his eyebrows. “No matter how I think about this, I can’t narrow down to anyone.” Chris shrugged “Don’t you think that bitch was a bit too inexperienced to have come up with such an elaborate plan?” “You think there is someone behind Eva?” Adam knitted his brows; It was not that he hadn’t thought of this possibility since Chris had brought this scheme to light…. But he too didn’t come across any suspects…. Other than one …... one that he didn’t want to think about …... one that he would rather feign ignorance. “Not think…. I am sure.” Chris narrowed his eyes. He knew that look on his father’s face. Not just him, the rest of the Walter brothers too narrowed their eyes as their gaze fell on their father. The only innocent ones were Thomas, Peter and Lorenzo. They probably didn’t know Adam as well as his own boys! “Dad, it is not that you haven’t suspected…” Mark slowly spoke up “It’s that you don’t want to tell us, isn’t it?”
Adam’s mind was in a mess; he didn’t know if he should be glad that his sons didn’t doubt his uncle or be sad that his father was the cause of his son’s misery. There was a reason for Adam’s biased reaction when the suspicion moved from his uncle to his father. His father had done many things to let him down from the time Wren came to stay at their home. Whether it was the despair he saw his mother falling into or messing up his life including his marriage, the number of times his father failed him could no longer be counted by the fingers of his hands. Naturally the impact of such incidents had also led to their relationship being strained beyond repair. The only thread keeping his heart from being consumed by hatred and the thirst for vengeance was his promise to his mother on her deathbed. His uncle on the other hand was different. All the best memories of his childhood were courtesy of his uncle. His uncle had doted on him like he was the most favoured child of heaven. His only
Marcus arrived an hour later just as Chris had predicted. He was all too familiar with Chris’s homebase. He had been a regular visitor here since his unfortunate accident. His friendship with his fifth and sixth uncle was the fortune he earned from his misfortune. “What’s the big deal?” Marcus asked he entered the study following Night Wing. “Take a seat” Eric laughed “You aren’t planning to listen and run, are you?” “Nope.” Marcus chuckled as he sat down “Why would I want to run when I can freeload on my favourite uncles?” Eric took the lead to make small talk before Chris started to get down to business. “Marcus, do you remember the accident?” “How could I forget?” Marcus shrugged winking mischievously “How else would I have the fortune to be a regular here? Miles is going to kill when I shatter his bubble of ‘I am the favourite nephew’.” “You wouldn’t dare….” Eric feigned a menacing look. “No promises.” Marcus chuckled softly before turning serious “But I am sure you didn’t
Darcy couldn’t stand the pressure while he waited for Chris and Eric to update Marcus. He started pacing through the room as he imagined the worst-case scenario where Marcus denied him and refused to accept him. He pulled off his tie as he found it difficult to breathe. He pulled open his top buttons as he paced; he pulled his hair as he threaded it with his hands in despair. He tried calming himself by taking deep breaths, but the truth was, none of this was helping his nerves. He stared anxiously at the door. Finally, as he saw the handle of the door turning, he assumed it was either Chris or Eric who came to update him and rushed towards the door. Embarrassingly, for Darcy, it was neither Chris nor Eric. The scene that entered Marcus’s eyes was an unkempt Darcy rushing forward like a madman. Darcy’s steps paused as he saw the face of the person who opened the door. His face changed like a colour palette before finally losing all colour and lowering his head in depression. Darcy s
The next two days passed in the blink of an eye and Chris returned while Emile concentrated on her work. She was especially enthusiastic as the end was in sight. Although she was in rush to finish, the quality of her work didn’t slack in the slightest. She took in all the feedback that Raphael gave and improved her work without any complaints. She knew Chris wouldn’t come this week as he had a client meeting overseas. She asked him to pay a visit to her family since it was in their home country. This didn’t seem to have any impact on Chris’s grand scheme as in the eyes of the whole world, Chris would travel a few hours every weekend to go to the Burke residence. Chris wanted his father to accompany him on this trip as they were planning to dig closer to home to check the root of Darcy’s misery. There were some things that were more convenient for Adam to check. Grandpa Walter didn’t want to fallout completely with Adam and his family; as soon as he came to know that Adam was coming
