Cheyenne looked out the window watching the rain. It had been raining when she woke up and if that hadn't been bad enough she had a text from Nick telling her that with the rain some of the crews wouldn't go out today. He was going to help one of the crews with some problems they were having and wouldn't be in this morning. She had no clue if that meant he wasn't coming in till late or if he just wasn't coming in at all.
As if the world knew she was at the office alone she had been slammed with phone calls, most of which she had no idea of what to tell them so she had to take messages and promise to call them back. She had considered going out for lunch but the way the driveway looked she would need a boat to get down the road. Hearing the phone ring again she sighed walking over to her desk and answering the phone. Rolling her eyes she heard the voice of somebody named Rebecca who had already called at least four times this morning. She had already told her that both Nick and her father were out of the office but one would call her as soon as possible.
Cheyenne held the phone out as the lady started cussing at her. She had about reached her limit with rude people today. "Look mam, I've already told you that either Mr. Morris or Mr. Griffin will call you when they arrive at the office. NO, I'm not giving you their cell phone number. I've already taken your message, I've relayed it, and was told to tell you they will call you. End of story."
The lady started off again but Cheyenne was more interested in the front door opening and a soaking wet Nick walking in the door. Damn, he was hot. His shirt clung to his body and as he ran his hand through his hair he caught Cheyenne's eye on him. Smirking at her he walked forward grabbing the phone out of her hand. "Is there a reason you are yelling at my secretary Mrs. Morales?"
Cheyenne watched him as he leaned against her desk. He looked uninterested in whatever she was telling him. "Ok well, we will have to pass. Good luck finding a new contractor."
As he hung up Cheyenne frowned at him, "So did she fire you or what?"
Nick shook his head walking to his office, "we haven't even started working on her contract, she kept trying to get us to come down on the price but she also keeps wanting added changes. I don't have time for her." Turning to look at Cheyenne he added "you don't have to put up with bullshit, hang up on them, don't answer the phone. I don't care."
Watching as he walked into his office and shut the door Cheyenne remembered the other list of messages she had so she got up walking to his office and instead of nocking walked straight in. He usually didn't shut his door all the way and she honestly was still kinda taken aback by the rude ass lady to even think that his door might be shut for a reason. Her mouth fell open as she saw him standing by his desk with his shirt off. Fuck, he was hot. Nick's clearly worked out, his body was ripped. He didn't have the body of someone who obsessively worked out but he had a defined six-pack.
Nick had never really seen Cheyenne caught off guard and for him to be the reason she stood there speechless amused him far more than it should. Nick had always kept a spare change of clothes at the office. He usually had to change because he had gotten muddy at a construction site. Today it had been the rain that had soaked through him. Pulling on his fresh shirt he smirked at Cheyenne, "are you just going to stand there, or do you have something to say to me?"
Cheyenne looked up making eye contact, "I have lots to say to you but I came to give you this note." Walking up to him she held out her hand, "you've been pretty popular today."
Nick reached out taking the sticky notes from her outstretched hand. "I'd rather hear what you have to say." He looked down at Cheyenne seeing the mischievous glint in her eye. She was still close enough to him that he could reach out and touch her if he so chose. Ever since their little run-in earlier in the week in the hall, he had tried to keep some distance from her. When she was near he lost all rational thought.
Cheyenne shrugged, "I don't know, I don't think you're ready for my honesty."
Nick took a step closer to Cheyenne, "try me."
Tilting her head up to look at him, "what has gotten into you today? Usually, you run from me."
Nick laughed, "I've never run from you, Cheyenne."
"Bullshit," Cheyenne said taking that small step that had kept them apart. "Even right now I can see the panic in your eyes."
Nick looked down at her, she wasn't backing down. She hadn't lied, when she took the step that put her so close to him they were touching he had began to panic. Reason finally settled back in and he was tempted to take a step back but he didn't want to prove her right.
A battle of wills was being played out and Nick found himself tired of coming up the loser with her. He was letting a 19-year-old girl get the best of him. That right there should be reason enough for him to send her back to her desk. Instead, he reached down pulling her chin up with his hand, and kissed her.
Cheyenne had been surprised by his sudden boldness. Her hands rested on his chest as she leaned into him deepening the kiss. The phone's shrill ringing made both of them jump. Nick looked down at Cheyenne shaking his head before he moved to grab the phone. As he began talking she went to walk away but he reached out grabbing her arm. He wasn't letting her walk out of his office before he spoke to her.
He could barely focus on the person on the other end of the phone speaking to him. Cheyenne had turned back around and was now sat atop his desk watching him. Nick had wanted to prove to her he wasn't afraid of her, that he still had full control of the situation. Now he knew he had never had control of Cheyenne, she played her cards and he had fallen into her hands.
Cheyenne could see Nick's wheels spinning in his head. She wished she knew what he was thinking. Had she finally broken through his walls? She hoped him pulling her back to him instead of letting her walk away meant that he was done trying to deny the chemistry between them. It might have been her boredom that had made her first decide to pursue him but they both had an obvious attraction to the other.
Hanging up the phone Nick turned his attention back to Cheyenne, "you do know this is a horrible idea right?"
She watched as Nick moved back in front of her. Reaching out she placed her hands on his arms pulling him even closer to her, "nobody needs to know what happens between us behind closed doors."
Nick stared down at her knowing that any desire he had left to resist her had just abandoned its fight. He had no clue how far she was wanting this to go, no idea what she expected from him, but he was tired of fighting her. She looked back up at him and seconds before their lips connected again the bell from the front door rang.
Cheyenne quickly jumped down from his desk. Nick had turned around and was smoothing his shirt down when he froze hearing Ed's voice from his door. "Man the rain is coming down hard. I could barely see the driveway."
Nick wondered if he was old enough to have a heart attack. Turning around he saw Cheyenne sitting down in the chair in front of his desk looking up at her dad. "I know when Nick got here earlier he was soaked. I'm not getting out in this mess."
Shaking his head Nick glanced at her again wondering how she could look so innocent when seconds earlier she was convincing him that no harm would come from them messing around behind everyone's back. He looked up at Ed as he sat down, "yeah it's pretty bad. I sent Donald and his crew home. I didn't want them doing anything electrical in this."
Ed nodded, "good call."
Cheyenne stood up, "I hope my messages are clear, if you need me to clarify anything else just let me know."
Nick watched as Ed smiled down at his daughter tapping her shoulders as she walked by him. "She hasn't been in your way has she?"
Nick shook his head, "no she's kept things interesting around here."
Shaking his head Ed laughed, "that's Cheyenne all right."
Nick felt the guilt sink in as Ed sat down across from his desk. He was talking about a little of everything but Nick's head was stuck remembering Cheyenne's words, "nobody needs to know what happens between us behind closed doors."
Setting a box down Cheyenne looked around at the cabin wondering if she might be better off at her parents. It was clear no one had stayed there in a while. It wasn’t dirty but the air had a staleness to it. The cabin needed to be aired out sooner rather than later if she had any hopes of sleeping there tonight. The cabin was rarely used anymore. Neither her dad nor Nick hunted much anymore. In fact, the cabin had turned into a storage building more than anything else. Cheyenne couldn’t deny the spot that it had been built on was beautiful especially in the fall.“It’s not that bad is it?” Ed asked walking in the door. “We can move these boxes to one of the bedrooms and you can have the other to yourself.”“Does it matter, like is one your’s, one Nick’s?” Cheyenne had to admit she would be far too amused to be able to tell Nick she had slept in his bed before she actually “slept “in hi
It was around 9:30 when Nick pulled up at the cabin. He wasn't sure exactly why he had decided to bring her food tonight. Staying away from her seemed to be best for him, anytime he was beside her he seemed to fall under her spell. Yet here he found himself.Telling himself he wasn't going to stay he only grabbed her bag and the drink she wanted and headed inside. Not bothering knocking he walked in seeing Cheyenne sitting on the couch looking bored. She frowned up at him, "umm where is your food? I know you aren't going to make me eat alone?"Nick sighed sitting her things down on the coffee table in front of her. "I was." He laughed at the face she gave him. "Give me a minute."She rolled her eyes as he walked out the door. He should have known better. Getting up Cheyenne went to grab a glass. As Nick walked back in she looked up, "do you need a glass?”He shook his head as he walked toward the couch, "I'm good."Cheyenne laughed, "no I thi
Cheyenne opened her eyes looking across at the empty bed. She wondered how Nick was taking this morning. He had left sometime during the night while she slept and she was honestly surprised he had not left earlier. Not that she minded cuddling up next to him. Sleeping in his arms has felt peaceful.Time had stopped for them last night and now in the light of day, it almost seemed as if it had all been a dream. Rolling over grabbing her phone Cheyenne was surprised to see that Nick had messaged her around 2 am. Opening the message she read, “just for the record I’m not running I’m going home.”Cheyenne smiled replying, “whatever you could have said bye.”Before she was able to set her phone down he responded, “how do you know I didn’t. Besides that whole text was a goodbye.”She liked this playful Nick a lot, she liked it even better than he was still talking to her this morning after what they had shar
Pulling up Monday morning Nick let out a mumbled, "fuck," as he saw Ed's truck already in the parking lot. Ed never came to the job site in the mornings. Could he have found out about him and Cheyenne? No, he knew she wouldn't go run and tell her dad what had happened. In fact, he was pretty sure he could trust her to not tell anyone.Letting out a sigh Nick got out of his truck and made his way inside. The front light was off but he could see Ed's light on in his office. Slowly making his way inside he paused in the door seeing Ed flipping through blueprints. "Didn't expect to see you this morning."Ed looked up at Nick clearly aggravated. "Me either I'm supposed to be in Tyler today." He pulled a blueprint out of his stack and began rolling it up. "It's that damn Hawkins again. Now she wants us to remodel her barn. I don't have time to remodel a barn this summer."Nick shook his head relieved that Cheyenne was in no way involved with Ed's appearance. "She's a
Nick didn't come back to the office till almost close. He hadn't meant to stay gone so long but he needed the air, he needed to clear his thoughts. He was already having doubts about playing Cheyenne's little game. They were too close to each other, there was no not seeing each other. As he walked in Cheyenne looked up from her phone frowning at him but she didn't say anything. "You wanna go home early?”She shrugged looking down, "I mean I guess." Looking up she tilted her head, "do you want me to go home early?"Nick stopped beside her, "so is that a no?""I'm not going to say no if that's what you are asking." Looking up at him Cheyenne sighed, "so instead of running you're sending me home now?"Nick let out a laugh that surprised them both. "How do you know I wasn't sending you to my house?"Cheyenne rolled her eyes, "don't play with me, Nick. I do know where you live and we both know you aren't ready for that."Nick took he
The moment Nick walked outside to move her car Cheyenne looked at the two dogs and patted her legs telling them to come here. They both looked at the door before cautiously walking forward a step. Cheyenne laughed, "come on before he comes back."When Nick walked back in he shook his head. Cheyenne was still on the couch but now had a dog on either side of her laying down with their head on her lap. Both dogs avoided looking up at him. "I leave you alone for 5 minutes and you already have my dogs doing things they know better than."Cheyenne petted them, "I don't know what you're talking about."As he walked closer to the couch he had to laugh as both dogs turned their heads away from him as if to say if they couldn't see him he wouldn't be able to see them. "Why do I feel as if you're going to come to turn my life upside down and leave me to pick up the mess?"Looking up as he sat down beside her she shrugged, "I'm not trying to. I just like animals and
Nick leaned forward squeezing Cheyenne's shoulders. She was sat at his feet playing fetch with his dogs even though he had already told her they weren't allowed to play in the house. He would have better luck talking to the wall. Not that he minded, Cheyenne had been a welcome distraction to his hectic world. She had stayed with him every night since Monday but tonight would be her last this week. Tate would be down this weekend and she would return to the cabin. It had scared them both a little how quickly each had found a place in the other's life.Cheyenne and Nick were strictly business at work to anyone who might happen to see them. Nick's house had clearly been the best choice of places to stay and Cheyenne had already taken over a drawer in his room and bathroom. When that had happened he wasn't sure but it made sense. There was no need in her waking up super early just to run to the cabin and get dressed although that would probably be the smarter thing to do.
Cheyenne looked up from her computer as the door opened. A blonde-headed boy came in that could be none other than Tate. She smiled at him even though she was confused, he wasn't supposed to be there. Nick was picking him up later today."Hey, Tate..." Cheyenne started before the unforgettable Lindsey walked in cutting her off."Where is Nick? He isn't answering any of my calls." Lindsey looked up and frowned, "who are you?""I'm Chey..."Once again she was cut off. "Oh my God Cheyenne...haven't you grown up.""Ugh yeah, I guess," Cheyenne said watching as the tall blonde strolled in the room. "So Nick is on-site handling a problem. He's been gone for a while."Lindsey sighed, "I hate to ask you Cheyenne but I have to leave earlier than expected. This is a new job and I can't afford to already mess with people's plans. Do you think Tate could sit here with you?"Cheyenne shook her head, "oh yeah not a problem. He can keep me entertain
A little after a year after from the notorious front porch talk Ed walked Cheyenne down the aisle to Nick. It was a day that he never could have imagined happening in a million years. He was giving his only daughter away to his best friend. After Nick's talk with Ed, he has moved on to Lindsey. She had acted just as he had expected she would. She went ballistic and drug Nick back to court. Things however didn't work out the way she wanted. She had gone after more money and Nick had gone after more visitation rights. In Lindsey's pursuit of more money, she had succeeded but fell short at the same time. Nick had to pay her an additional 500 a month but he now only had to pay half of Tate's cell phone bill and extracurricular activities. Nick had won more time with Tate in the summer months when he wasn't at school.Lindsey still talked plenty of shit but in the end, there was nothing she could do. As much as she tried to bad mouth Cheyenne and Nick to Tate it was all to
Pulling up at Nick's Cheyenne was a ball of nerves. She had no idea what her dad would say to Nick. The fact that he wanted to talk to him in private worried her even more. What would happen?Nick wasn't in the house so she walked to the backyard finding him in his shop. "Hey," she said walking up slowly. He looked up from his workbench, "where have you been?"Cheyenne shrugged walking up beside him leaning in to kiss him. "Why didn't you tell me my dad hit you?"Pausing Nick looked down at her, "so you went and talked to your dad today? How did that go?"Sighing Cheyenne tilted her head, "Nick, don't bypass my question."He smiled down at her reaching out and pulling her closer to him. "It wasn't worth upsetting you with. Besides he didn't hit me that hard. You'd have known don't you think?"Cheyenne laid her head against his chest, "I guess. He is coming over tonight to talk to you. He asked me to stay away. I don't know how I feel
It was two weeks before Ed said another word to his daughter. Each and every day he avoided the office, he avoided Nick, he avoided having to face the situation altogether.Rachel had tried to take to him about Cheyenne and Nick but it only resulted in a fight between them each time. He didn’t understand why she was ok with this. Cheyenne had no clue what she was getting into. Nick came with baggage. She was making a fool out of him and his business.Today however he couldn’t avoid her. Today she was sitting on the front porch steps waiting on him. Oh sure he could just back up and leave, refuse to talk to her but what kind of dad did that make him. He knew he had to face her eventually. As he approached her Cheyenne looked up and he could see the exhaustion all on her face. It was hard to be mad at her, she was his baby girl, but he was so disappointed in her. He had raised her to be so much better than this.Sitting down beside her he took a
Cheyenne had been a nervous wreck when they made it to Nick's house. She knew Nick wasn't telling her the whole story and it bothered her. She was sure he was only protecting her but she didn't want to be protected. Left to her own thoughts she would make things ten times worse than they probably were. But what if what she was thinking wasn't bad enough? To keep busy she decided to cook dinner, maybe if she could get everyone to just sit down for a bit tempers would calm down. Nick didn't object
Cheyenne had never been as nervous as she was now sitting outside of her dad’s office. Nick was in there now talking to her dad and although she had gotten him to agree to let her come he refused to let her inside the office. Confusion had been written all over Ed’s face when Nick and Cheyenne had walked in together.Ed’s face has fallen the moment he saw Cheyenne. “Cheyenne, what kind of trouble have you gotten yourself into now?”
It had been over a year since Cheyenne had seen Nick. She rarely thought of him at all anymore. Not during the day anyway she thought of him every night. She dreamed of him most nights. Still, she had for the most part moved on.She had managed to make all A’s last semester helping to relieve some of the damage her first year had caused. School was almost a vacation for her. It was a way to fill her mind with anything but Nick. It had helped push his memory back and fill it with other facts.Cheyenne had casually dated a guy named Ryan for a few months. Nothing serious had ever come from it and they still hooked up from time to time. She had no feelings for him, he was only a means to an end that didn’t require any commitment. She had only gone home twice since she had left. Once for Thanksgiving and once for Christmas. Both times she came down and stayed two days leaving the first chance she could. Those times had been hard on her. She refused to leave the house a
She left on a Friday morning. Her car loaded down with her belongings headed back to Austin. The only thing she had left behind was her heart. Pulling out of town had been the hardest thing Cheyenne had ever had to do. She wished she still drank, she would have downed a shot of whiskey for the road.Things had been different after she and Nick had returned from his cabin on the lake. Both tried to prepare themselves for what was to come but there wasn't enough preparation in the world to help either of them.Cheyenne had spent every night but Thursday at Nick’s house. He had ended up at the cabin with her Thursday after they had already said their goodbyes at work. One call from her and he had forgotten all about getting caught and went to her.Nick hadn't been able to handle her tears, he was horrible with tears. He usually just didn't care and lacked the correct response expected but with Cheyenne, he just wanted to stop them. He didn't want to be responsible for
When the sun rose Sunday morning it found Nick and Cheyenne up playing board games laughing. Neither was ready for the weekend to come to an end. They had already decided that they would wait until later to leave. They left in the dark, they would come back home in the dark. It only made sense. Besides they wanted to squeeze in as much time alone together as they could. They didn’t focus on any one conversation. Instead, their talks were random. Cheyenne told Nick things he had never known about her. She had opened up about her drinking and he began to understand her more than he had ever thought possible.Nick talked about what had lead up to his divorce, he took most of the blame but he admitted to her that it was a marriage that had been doomed from the start. He told her about the struggle of leaving his son behind and why he kept putting up with her crap. They discussed favorite foods, colors, movies, music, and so much more. They talked about everything. Well
Nick woke up finding the bed beside him empty. Cheyenne wasn’t a morning person so he knew there was a reason she was up out of bed before 7. Probably the same reason he didn’t get much sleep last night.Cheyenne had been unusually quiet last night. He had eventually gotten her to lighten up but she still wasn’t her normal self. She was still there but it was like the light inside her had burned out. Part of him had even considered asking her if she wanted a drink but he knew nothing good would come from that so he took her edge off the only other way he knew how.As he walked downstairs he smiled seeing her on the couch with a cup of coffee and the two dogs sitting on the couch beside her. Pausing her watched them, he watched her. Even this morning she had a note of sadness to her. He had racked his brain last night trying to come up with a solution but there wasn’t one.True enough there could be options but he didn’t want to thin
