Evelyn's POV

My feet slammed against the floor as I paced back and forth across the living room, arms locked stiffly behind my back, my chest tight with worry I couldn’t shake off no matter how much I told myself to stop.

Every few steps, I turned sharply on my heel, casting anxious glances at the door. He still wasn’t back.

And the worst part?

I hated that I was this worried.

Because if the tables were turned, if it were me out there, he wouldn’t even bat an eye. He wouldn’t even care.

So what was my deal? Why was my heart clawing at my ribs like this?

I tried to shake it off, forcing myself upstairs and flopping down on my bed, but the second my body touched the mattress, I was twisting and turning, tangled in the sheets, my mind racing with a thousand horrible scenarios.

It was unbearable.

I shot up again, unable to stay still.

Then

My phone buzzed, cutting sharply through the noise of my thoughts.

I snatched it up without thinking.

The screen lit up with an unknown number, but I knew who it was.

Him.

The man the kidnapper the monster I had made a deal with.

Why was he calling me? What did he want now?

I hesitated, my thumb hovering over the screen, heart pounding painfully against my chest.

Another buzz. A text.

"Pick up your phone. I know you’re sitting there watching it ring without answering."

I gasped and immediately glanced around my room, my skin crawling like bugs were burrowing under it.

Did he have cameras in here?

Oh my God.

What the hell had I gotten myself into?

This man wasn’t just dangerous.

He was something worse.

With trembling hands, I finally picked up, pressing the phone to my ear so tightly my fingers hurt.

His voice poured into my ear, smooth and casual like he wasn’t talking about life and death.

"Don’t bother calling him for now. He’s trying to track the phone. I did something. He’s probably dead by now. Only God knows."

My stomach dropped.

"What?!" I screamed, my own voice surprising me.

I wasn’t supposed to talk.

I was supposed to keep up the act that I couldn’t speak keep pretending.

But the shock tore the words out of me before I could stop it.

He laughed a dark, twisted sound that sent a shiver skating down my spine.

"So, you can speak now, huh?" he taunted.

I didn’t even let him finish.

"Where is he?!" I screamed again, my voice raw. "How dare you touch him!"

He chuckled like this was all some kind of sick game to him.

"He’s in his secret office," he said, before hanging up.

I stood there, frozen for a split second, staring at the phone in my hand, feeling the world tilt under my feet.

How did he know about the secret office?

How did he know anything?

Panic surged through me, hot and wild.

I bolted out the door, flagging down the nearest taxi with frantic waves and, with trembling fingers, I called an ambulance on the way.

The ride was a blur of pounding heartbeats and prayers I didn’t even know I still remembered.

When the taxi screeched to a stop, I didn’t wait.

I threw money at the driver and sprinted inside the building.

The sight that met me froze me to the spot.

Blood.

So much blood.

He was lying there he and Dave, his loyal secretary, crumpled beside him, both soaked in deep, dark pools of blood.

It looked like a nightmare.

It was a nightmare.

I dropped to my knees beside him, tears streaming down my face before I even realized I was crying.

This was all because of me.

All because of me.

The ambulance sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder, closer.

They stormed in, lifting him carefully, shouting words at each other that I couldn’t hear past the roaring in my ears.

I followed them like a ghost, hands clenched at my sides, my clothes soaked in his blood, my mind replaying every moment over and over—where it all went wrong, where I could have stopped it.

At the hospital, time slowed into something thick and sticky.

I sat for what felt like centuries, staring blankly at the white walls, my whole body rigid with terror.

Finally, finally

The nurse told me he was awake.

I sprinted to his room, hope igniting painfully in my chest.

But the second I pushed open the door, the hope shattered.

He was sitting up, yanking at the IV in his arm, furious energy rolling off him in waves.

I grabbed my iPad, the only way I could “talk,” and typed out a quick message.

"You shouldn’t be out of bed."

I held it up to him, desperate, pleading.

But he barely glanced at it before he shoved it out of my hands, the iPad clattering to the floor.

His eyes burned into me, full of a rage I wasn’t prepared for.

"What the hell is wrong with you?!" he roared, his voice echoing off the sterile walls.

"Why would you bring me here?! Why would you show my weakness?!"

His hands grabbed my shoulders roughly, slamming me back against the cold, unforgiving wall.

I gasped, my head snapping back painfully.

Tears blurred my vision, but I didn’t dare wipe them away.

"Was this your plan, huh?!" he shouted, shaking me once, hard. "To bring me down?!"

“Sir, the reporters are here. What do we tell them?” Dave’s voice broke through, making Louis break character. Dave's voice was weak and shaky. He looked like hell bandaged hands, pale face. He was just as wrecked as I felt.

“Don’t go out. We’ll sneak out the back,” Louis muttered, barely glancing at me as he staggered to his feet. I rushed to gather what was left of my shattered iPad, my fingers trembling. Somehow, the broken screen felt like a reflection of what life had been like with him all these years silent, ignored, invisible.

I turned to leave, holding back the lump in my throat, but he grabbed my wrist. “I’m sorry... I was just mad, and ”

“Just shut it,” I typed furiously on my phone, shoving it in his face. My hands were already in my bag, pulling out a folded document. I slammed it into his chest.

“Sign it. Now. And I’ll be out of your life for good.”

To my shock, he didn’t argue. He just took it.

“Pen,” he said hoarsely.

I hesitated... then gave it to him. Watched him sign it right in front of me.

I should’ve felt relief. Freedom.

But as the ink dried, my heart cracked quietly inside me.

Evelyn’s POVI should have felt relieved. The moment the kidnapper let me go, I should have been desperate to get home, to escape the nightmare I had just endured. But there was no relief. Just a numb weight settling in my chest, like a heavy stone pressing down on me.My wrists still ached from the ropes that had bound them hours ago. I rubbed at the raw skin absently, staring down at my hands. They trembled slightly, though I wasn’t sure if it was from fear, exhaustion, or something else entirely.I glanced at the man in the driver’s seat. His face remained unreadable as he steered the van through the empty streets."You okay?" his voice cut through the silence.I hesitated. Was I?I lifted my iPad, my fingers moving over the screen. I don't know.He let out a quiet breath, his hands tightening around the wheel. "Yeah. Figured."Silence stretched between us again, but it wasn’t uncomfortable. Evelyn’s POVI clutched the phone tightly, my hands trembling as the kidnapper’s voice echoed in my mind."Can you talk?"My stomach twisted into knots. Of course, I can’t talk. Everyone knew that.Yet, he had laughed. "Relax, princess. I was just joking."But was he?There was something unsettling in his eyes, something that felt like a challenge. Like he was waiting for me to prove him wrong. My throat tightened, my breath coming in short, shaky gasps.I forced myself back to reality. The phone—the key to my freedom—was in my hands now. But at what cost?I had agreed to his terms without hesitation, not because I wanted to, but because I had no other choice. I needed a way out of this marriage. Evelyn's POV’sI could see the shock in Louis' face, and I admit—I loved it.His brows furrowed, lips parting like he couldn’t quite believe what he just heard. “Nice meeting you. I'm Louis, and who are you, if I may ask?” His voice held that same confusion, like he hadn’t just heard Samuel call me "babe."Samuel didn’t hesitate. He stepped forward, his hand lightly brushing mine. "I'm Samuel, and I'm her boyfriend."Louis blinked rapidly. His jaw clenched, and I saw his gaze flick from Samuel to me and back again. There was hesitation in his eyes, the kind that comes with disbelief and irritation hidden behind a polite smile."Really? So, you mean you know everything about her? And you guys have… hmm..." His words trailed off as a colleague came rushing toward him, whispered something into his ear, and like that, he was gone.Louis turned to us briefly, masking his emotions. "I need to leave. How dare you defile me!"He lunged forward before I could react, slamming me into the wall with a force that knocked the breath out of me. Pain shot through my back, but I bit my tongue, refusing to cry out. I tried to push against him, but he was stronger—too strong. His chest was heaving. His nose skimmed down toward mine, then hovered just above my lips. I froze."You're drunk," he muttered, his voice strained, trying to contain the rage shaking through him. "That's why you're spouting this nonsense. We'll talk tomorrow."No, this wasn’t just anger. This was jealousy. Possessiveness. The kind that doesn’t make sense when you’re never truly wanted. We’d been married for a while now, yet never once had he touched me—not like that. I was still a virgin. A virgin wife. Lious' POVThe right thing to do—the obvious, logical thing—was to get the police involved. But then again… that would be the beginning of the end, wouldn’t it?A scandal could destroy me.It wasn’t just my name or reputation on the line—it was everything I’d built. My position at the company, my influence, my image. And with enemies lurking in every shadow, especially my own brother who’s been waiting like a vulture to swoop in, this would be the perfect excuse he’s been praying for.He doesn’t know yet, not about Evelyn or about the mess my marriage has become. But he will. They always find out.I clenched my jaw as I read the note Evelyn shoved at me. I didn't even process the words. But I wasn’t going to wait around for whatever came next. My instincts screamed louder than reason. I turned and ran my legs carrying me faster than my mind could catch up straight into my room. The door slammed behind me, and I twisted the lock with shaking fingers, my breath ragged. Then came the banging.“Open the damn door!” he roared from the other side. The door rattled with each pound of his fist. “Open it now or I swear I’ll break it down!”I didn’t move. I couldn’t. Louis' POVThe moment I picked up the phone and heard that voice again, a chill ran down my spine.“Let her go!” I growled into the speaker, my voice rough, raw, nearly shaking with fury.Whoever it was this person calling from a blocked number, their voice masked with some kind of distortion they weren’t new. This wasn’t the first time they’d dialed me. I remembered the last three digits: 165. They used to call constantly, then stopped. And now, they were back.“If you want to see your wife alive,” the voice hissed, “come now. Alone. Or she dies.”My grip tightened around the steering wheel. My knuckles turned white. Every fiber in me screamed not to give in, not without knowing for sure. This could be another trap. I had enemies more than I could count. Anyone could be using her as bait.“Show me proof,” I demanded through clenched teeth.A low laugh crackled through the line. “You’re a funny man. Your wife is in danger, and you’re asking for proof? Fine. Here you go.”A second lat

Eveyln’s POVI've been living my life quietly… for her.Always in the shadows, always in silence. Every choice I made, every step I took—it was for her. I thought I was protecting myself. But today, standing in front of her, it finally hit me—it had all been their plan from the start. I was just a placeholder. A space warmer. Holding her place until she returned to pick up right where I left off.Her smile glowed in the room, warm and blinding—and yet, it made my chest ache.“I heard what happened after the accident,” Erica said, stepping closer with that polished, innocent smile. “I’m sorry I didn’t come to you sooner.”Liar.Her voice was syrupy sweet, her expression soft. But I knew her. I could read the cruelty hidden in the curve of her lips, in the sparkle of her eyes. She wasn't sorry. She was victorious. That smile… it wasn’t sympathy. My whole world was spinning, and the ground beneath me felt like it could crack open at any second and swallow me whole. This... this was all my fault. Before I could even blink again, the police stormed in, their boots loud against the floor. My heart jumped in my chest. He was still here—he was still in the room! But like a ghost, he vanished. He darted through the window just before the officers spotted him.“We’ve called an ambulance. Where’s the suspect?” one officer asked firmly, stepping closer to me.I opened my mouth, but nothing came out. Not a word, not even a breath. I was too scared to even move. I wasn’t allowed to leave unless it was a true emergency. But wasn’t this an emergency? My hands hesitated over my iPad. Every rational thought told me to stay put, but something darker—fear, maybe—was creeping in, taking over my judgment. I had to go.“What's going on?” Samuel asked, eyes narrowing as he noticed the panic rising on my face.“I need to leave now,” I typed quickly and flipped the screen for him to see.“I’ll go with you,” he said without hesitation.I nearly shouted out in protest—no—but instead, I signed the word with forceful hands, shaking my head. I got the position—I’m officially his manager now. Which means,” he said with a wink, “I work under you, sir. And guess what? You can’t fire me.”My stomach twisted.Louis stepped forward, his expression unreadable, yet the tension around his jawline betrayed the storm brewing beneath the surface. His hand reached toward Samuel’s suit, and I froze. Was he really about to punch him?But no. In a move that completely threw me off, he simply adjusted Samuel’s lapel with a calm, composed hand.“Welcome to the company,” Louis said coolly. “Let’s keep this professional. No dating among employees.”Samuel smirked. “I know exactly what you’re trying to do. But I read every clause before I signed, and nowhere did it say dating was prohibited.
