Chapter 9

"She’ll only hate me."

My mom held the photo tightly to her chest, and finally, the tears came.

"I don’t hate you. I’ve never hated you.

"I just didn’t know how to face you."

I clutched my chest, wiping the tears from the corners of my eyes, and the pain began to ease.

She said she did not hate me, but I knew that she did not love me either.

She had Zac move all the lamps out of the house, leaving none behind.

Then, with great care, she placed the photo into her bag, keeping it close to her.

Mom, didn’t you think it was too late to do this?

I did not need those lamps anymore. They could not shine into my heart, and I was still afraid.

When we got home, the first thing my mom did was clear out Gwen’s study and fill it with the lamps.

"Dad, look at Mom. What’s wrong with her?

"Why bring back a dead person’s stuff? That’s so unlucky." Gwen stood at the door, gripping my dad’s arm tightly.
