I pulled myself together and handled Zane's after-death arrangements alone. There weren't any close relatives on my side, and there was no need to inform Louis' side either.

His mother, Camilla Mclaughlin, had made it clear from the start of our marriage that she didn't like me.

She said my hands didn't look like they were made for housework and that marrying me would only bring trouble.

She even accused me of using favors to force Louis into marrying me.

Looking back, this marriage was doomed from the start.

After everything was settled, I began packing up Louis' belongings. This apartment was part of the inheritance from Dad and Mom and had nothing to do with him.

Just as I finished packing the last box, the door creaked open.

Louis entered, looking worn out. He was holding two boxes.

Without a word, I opened the first one. Inside was a pearl bracelet.

It looked familiar. Wendy wore the same bracelet, though hers was clearly of a much higher quality.

But it didn't matter. W

The next day, Louis showed up at the parent-teacher meeting but not alone. Wendy and her timid daughter, Tiana, were with him.I couldn't help but sneer. Yesterday, he claimed he was busy, but apparently, he was attending the meeting for Tiana. What a devoted father he was. He had such a perfect, happy family.Louis noticed my scornful expression and flushed slightly. Still, he walked over and demanded, "Where's Zane? It's been days, and he's still angry with me! Wendy and Tiana have already forgiven him."I stared coldly at him. "Zane didn't do anything wrong. Don't you dare accuse him!"Wendy's eyes reddened as she spoke softly, "Are you saying Tiana is lying?"I snorted. "Show me the evidence."Wendy bit her lip and fell silent. To Louis, though, her silence looked like victimhood. He stepped protectively in front of her. "Why are you bullying her? Zane must've taken after you. He's such a little kid, yet he did mean things like spilling drinks on Tiana's dress."I let out

Wendy's face was battered, swollen, and bloodied. The look she gave me was one of sheer terror, as though she had seen a ghost.Louis, on the other hand, had completely forgotten about her. With tears streaming down his face, he grabbed my shoulders. "Where's Zane? Please, let me see him one last time."I stared at him blankly and replied, "He was cremated." Louis collapsed to his knees. He covered his face helplessly as his shoulders shook with uncontrollable sobs.Despite her own injuries, Wendy wrapped her arms around him to comfort him with soft, gentle words. "It's not your fault, Louis. None of this is your fault."I would never forget that Wendy played a part in Zane's death. My voice grew even more ethereal as I said, "Wendy's a mother. Why didn't she stop you when you had Zane go out and buy that dress?"Why couldn't it wait until the next day? It was so dark and cold that night. Zane must have been terrified when he died. Even during his last moments, he'd clutched that white dress so tightly, hoping you would praise him.""Enough!" Louis shouted, his voice trembling. Consumed by guilt, he slammed his fist against his own head.I let his head fall to my shoulder, watching him torment himself with cold satisfaction.Great. The more he regretted it, the more it pleased me. This was exactly what I needed in order to proceed with my plan.Half a month later, Wendy finally realized something was wrong. As I watched Wendy leave, a meaningful smile played on my lips. Two months later, Wendy returned. This time, Louis no longer rejected her as harshly. However, he was clearly taken aback by her towering nose, swollen, misshapen eyes, and thick, full lips.Wendy thought Louis was moved by her, so she hurriedly poured her heart out, "I missed you so much. Since you're afraid of my old face, I'm willing to change for you."But what she didn't understand was that, for a man like Louis, his love would fade with her allure. What was once a fairly delicate and charming face had now become disfigured, resembling something out of a horror tale. Wendy cried so hard that she was gasping for breath. "Louis, you promised to love me forever! Are you dumping me now?"Louis sighed. His eyes were filled with guilt as he looked at her. "Wendy, we can't be together anymore. Every time I see you, I think of Zane."Wendy threw herself into his arms without a second thought. "I don't want anything from you. I just want you to stay with me, Louis. We grew up together. I really can't let you go.""If you didn't want his money, why did you ask me for 200 thousand dollars?" I interrupted her with a smile. Both Louis and Wendy froze. Wendy immediately denied it with a shrill voice. "You're lying! I never asked for your money! You're talking nonsense to slander me!"I smirked and pulled out a recorder pen from my bag. I'd secretly recorded our conversation the day I gave her the money. In the recording, her voice was filled with flattery as she said, "I don't even like Louis. His family's poor, and his mom's cheap. • My Son Died Because of a White Dress   Chapter 1

I had just finished handling my son Zane Graham's funeral arrangements when the number I had dialed dozens of times without an answer finally called back.My husband, Louis Graham, said irritably, "Where's Zane? That idiot can't even handle something as simple as buying a darn dress."A wave of absurd despair surged inside me. I muttered, "He's dead."There was a rare pause on the other end before the mocking tone came crashing down. "Nora Harrison, what's gotten into you? You're really saying all sorts of nonsense now, huh?"Why don't you go ahead and say you're dead too? Enough with the nonsense. Did he get the dress or not? Make him deliver it himself as an apology."Before I could respond, the line went dead.I stared blankly at the small box beside me. I picked up the bloodstained dress from the floor and hailed a cab to Louis' office. His employees whispered when they saw me. I overheard someone mention how pathetic it must be for a wife to end up like me.I sneered and p

It had been two full days since Zane's funeral, and I hadn't slept a wink. My head throbbed, and my eyes were bloodshot.I glanced at the goldfish on the table. Louis noticed my gaze and sneered. "Wendy's a caring person. Someone like you wouldn't understand."His words suddenly made me remember something from two years ago, when I wanted a puppy to keep me company. His response was anything but kind. He'd clicked his tongue in annoyance. "Zane already has a bunny. Why do you need a dog? It has too much hair. It's too much trouble."Having a dog was too much trouble, but keeping a fish was called caring.I forced a bitter smile. I thought I had forgotten all this by now, but the memories came flooding back in a rush.Wendy walked over and placed a hand on my shoulder. Her expression was full of concern as she asked, "Are you okay, Nora?"I couldn't listen to her words, but my eyes immediately fell on the emerald necklace around her neck.My pupils constricted, and my forehead s

He raised his arm to defend himself, but the knife sliced through his skin. Blood poured out in a torrent.Wendy's eyes widened in terror. Her body shook uncontrollably. She fumbled for her phone to call the police, but Louis snatched it from her.He gripped the phone in one hand and my wrist in the other as he looked at me in disbelief. "Nora Harrison! Have you lost your mind? Are you trying to get yourself in jail?"I screamed in agony, "I want you both to die!"Panic flashed across his face. He grabbed the knife from me, trying to close the distance and hold me.However, I picked up a nearby glass and threw it at him.He dodged it while shouting, "You want to kill me over a stupid bunny?"I broke down at his words. What did I do wrong?" I muttered to myself.Suddenly, a soft touch brushed my forehead, snapping me out of my daze. I looked up in confusion to see Zane's bunny, Peachy.I reached out to touch it, but someone else picked it up before I could.Sensing danger, Peachy squirmed uneasily in their arms.I shakily got to my feet and choked back tears as I reached out to Louis.
