Chapter 3

Author: Summer Sway
Before my hand could even reach the phone, Shannon slapped it away. "What do you think you're doing? Trying to call your accomplices, huh?"

Her sharp voice cut through the air like a knife, stabbing painfully into my ears.

The crowd around us jeered, their voices rising in a chorus of insults and accusations, crashing over me like waves. I hadn’t even fully processed what was happening when someone grabbed a rock from the ground and hurled it straight at me.

Pain exploded in my cheek as the rock struck me, and I felt the warm trickle of blood slide down my face.

I struggled to lift my head, using every ounce of strength I had left, and screamed, "Shannon Sinclair! I am Jeremy’s wife! I’m the mother of our son, Daniel!"

Hearing her name, Shannon froze for a moment, then let out a shriek. She lifted her stiletto heel and kicked me square in the face.

"Oh, really? You even know everything about us! This must be a part of some criminal ring!

"Let’s do the right thing today! Stand up for all the families who’ve had their children kidnapped!" she shouted again.

Before I could react, a few burly men pinned me down, holding me in place. Shannon picked up a metal pipe from somewhere and slowly began walking toward me.

With a loud crack, the pipe slammed into my back. The pain was so bad that it nearly knocked me out. My thoughts spun as a single question echoed in my mind: how could Jeremy bring this woman into our lives, into our son's life, after just a month of my being away?

At that moment, a middle-aged man snatched the pipe out of Shannon’s hand.

Shaking his head with disapproval, he said, "You're too soft. When dealing with someone like her, you’ve got to…"

Without finishing, he lifted the pipe high and brought it crashing down on my legs once, twice… After three times. I could feel my bones shatter under the blows.

The searing pain was unbearable, and I screamed at the top of my lungs, "Are you all insane? Do you even realize what you're doing?!"

"What are we doing? We’re beating a kidnapper, that’s what!" the middle-aged man answered, his voice self-righteous as he continued to strike. "Scum like you deserves to be torn apart!"

The pain made my vision blur and darken, and Shannon’s twisted face hovered above me.

She bent down to whisper wickedly in my ear, "Is that all you’ve got? Just wait until Jeremy gets here. Then, you’ll really understand what it means to suffer."

I mustered every ounce of strength I had left and spat a mouthful of blood-tinged spit in her face. "Oh, really? Let him come. Let’s see who’s really going to suffer! I’m going to ruin his company, take everything he has, and kick him out on the street with nothing. He’ll spend the rest of his life on his knees begging me for mercy!"

My words made Shannon’s face contort in rage. What had been just a twisted expression was now a full-blown mask of fury. "You bitch! How dare you have the nerve to talk back!"

"Did you all hear that?" she screamed to the crowd. "She’s still pretending! So what do you think? Should we make sure she knows what it feels like to lose her own child?"

The crowd, incited by her words, grew even wilder. The preschool teacher, who had been watching nervously, finally spoke up, "The school has called the police. They’ll be here any minute. Maybe we should—"

"Who cares? Everyone hates people like her! The police won’t say anything!" a shrill voice called out, and others echoed in agreement.

That’s why you'd do something so inhumane."Anger surged within me, so strong I couldn’t hold it in any longer. Through gritted teeth, I said, "Shannon, instead of lying here, you should ask Jeremy who I am!"“Ask?” She let out a derisive laugh. "Do you think the CEO has time to waste on nobodies like you? The police officers stepped out of their car, stunned by the scene in front of them.A female officer quickly grabbed a towel from the car and threw it over me, yelling, "What the hell are you doing? How could you beat someone up like this?"With red-rimmed eyes, Shannon spoke up, "Officer, this woman is a kidnapper. She just tried to take my son."The officer frowned, looking at me. "Name and ID."I lifted my head. "It's Elle Zieg–" I began, but everything went dark before I could finish. We need your cooperation for the investigation."He held up a photo to my face. "

“Dan? What are you saying?”I pulled my son, Dan, away from Shannon and said, “Dan, yesterday you didn’t want me. Well, today, I don’t want you either.” Dan burst into tears, throwing himself into my arms and hugging me tightly.“What about Dad? Are you leaving him too?” he asked.I glanced at Jeremy, who stood there frowning. “Yes, I’m leaving him too.”Jeremy’s eyes widened. He immediately let go of Shannon’s hand and hurried over to my hospital bed.“Elle, when did you come back? Why didn’t you let me know in advance?”I beckoned him closer with a curl of my finger, and he leaned in. I slapped him across the face with a loud smack. He didn’t even try to dodge it. Instead, he just said, “You hurt your hand. Hitting me like that must hurt.”Shannon stood there, frozen, utterly dumbfounded. How could she have known that the man she treasured so much, Jeremy, would be so groveling in front of me?I stared him down, my voice cold as ice. “Jeremy, you can’t even play the role

The police officer, clearly fed up, snapped his notebook shut with a loud clap."Alright, alright. If you're not a kidnapper, this is easier to handle. As for the assault and slander you mentioned, we'll open a case for investigation. We won't let anyone involved get away with this!"Shannon, however, kept defending herself."I've never even seen Elle! How was I supposed to know if she’s really Dan's mother? Was I wrong for being worried he was being kidnapped?"I glared at her and spoke through gritted teeth. "I told you I had proof. Did you give me a chance to show it? Did you ask Jeremy like I said you should? No! You knew full well you were not Dan's mother, yet you still told everyone you were. You were the one who accused me of being a kidnapper, and this is the consequence!"The officer sighed. "We'll verify all of this through surveillance footage and witness statements. For now, you should get some rest. We'll update you when we have results." As he shook his head and l

After Shannon and Jeremy left, I finally let out a long sigh of relief.I had my assistant, Cory, pick Dan up and bring him to a villa my father had left me. Then, I began the process of changing his name and getting him a passport.Three days later, I registered a new account on Instagram. On there, I posted all the evidence I had proving my relationship with Dan: the paternity test results, my marriage certificate with Jeremy, the video from the preschool, and the official police report that had been filed. I dumped it all online at once. The video exploded, causing a massive uproar across the internet. Commenters were quick to take my side, turning into digital crusaders as they condemned Shannon and Jeremy.“That woman has no shame! She’s not even the kid’s real mother! How vain!”“And that guy? A total scumbag! He cheated on his wife while she was away on a business trip!”“My heart breaks for this mom. She worked so hard raising her son, only to be beaten like a criminal!”

Jeremy seemed to calm down after hearing my words. “I’ll agree to the divorce,” he said slowly, “but I won’t leave with nothing.”He turned to look at me cunningly. “After your father died, I’ve been the one running the company. Do you really think it would be where it is today without me?”I couldn’t help but laugh. “Today? Are you seriously unaware of how your scandals have dragged the company through the mud? Ask the shareholders. Do you think any of them still want you as CEO?”Jeremy’s face stiffened. I’d hit a sore spot, and he couldn’t respond. I continued, “Do you really believe you held the company up all on your own? Hence, even though my business trip wasn’t technically over, I pushed through the pressure to come back early and surprise my son.It was the day before a big local fall festival, and the preschool was bustling with activity. My eyes scanned the crowd until I spotted him—my little boy, Daniel Lynn.He was dressed in an adorable bunny costume, nestled in the arms of a woman, whining in his sweet little voice, “Mom, I want a candy apple.”At that moment, a chill ran down my spine. That woman was none other than Jeremy’s college sweetheart—Shannon Sinclair! How could I not recognize her?
