The leaves rustled beneath her feet as she walked through the lonely path in the woods. Melissa turned around, she could still see the fire torch with which they lighted to tend to the horses.
Mason was kneeling down and doing something with coach’s man, his attention was not on her, but Emily’s was.
Her blue eyes were pinned upon her with a glint of satisfaction and a hint of rage.
Lisa knew she was doing this to punish her.
She drew in a shaky breath. She wished to turn back to her, to talk to her, tell her the truth and apologize.
But she knew Emily, and she had never seen Emily look at her this much hate and contempt. Telling her the truth might only serve to further anger her and spur her into even more rash decisions.
Obeying her silently is the best option, and even though it meant risking her life for a simple fruit in the middle of the woods at past midnight, Lisa was going to do her best to overcome this temptation.
She closed her eyes for a moment and try to scent it, the location of this fruit which Emily claimed to perceive.
As an Omega, her senses were lessened, but not entirely so. If she was within close proximity to the fruit, she would be able to smell it just a little, she just needed a little focus.
The crickets creaked, a rodent rustled in the corner beneath some leaves and an owl hooted in a tree not too far away from her.
Werewolves are not the type to be scared of wild animals like humans, or dark places and eerie woods. But you’re a female Omega walking through the woods, you risk a lot of things.
Lisa drew in a very long breath, hoping to catch the scent of this fruit in question. She could smell the leaves, both dry and fresh, the bit of dewy moisture in the air, and the very faint scent of a fruit not too far away.
She exhaled, lifting the edges of her gown. She took a step forward, barely seeing through the darkness. She planted her feet on some dry leaves, she felt light for a moment, and then there it came.
The leaves parted below her feet, and soon enough she was floating, except she was going downwards.
She let out a loud scream and a yelp as she went crashing down into the pit. She landed on the ground beneath with a loud thud, and a wince.
Pain shot through her body and she gritted her teeth, trying to restrain the scream that threatened to spill from her lips, but she could not help it. She let out a loud cry.
“Okay we are ready… let’s get back into our carriages, we can’t camp here. We have to get moving.” Mason announced, dusting his knees as she rose from the ground.
Emily sighed, clamping her mouth with her palm and letting out a long yawn. “Finally, let’s get home already please. I am tired and very hungry.”
Mason looked around, his eyes darting from one servant to the next. “Is everybody here?” He inquired cautiously, he meant to ask about Melissa in the most discreet way he could without upsetting Emily or making his pull to the servant girl noticeable.
“Melissa is not here.” Someone answered, another servant.
Mason frowned, turning to Emily. “Your servant girl is not here? Why?”
Emily sighed, rolling her eyes. “I sent her to fetch me some fruit. She should be back any moment now.”
“How long has she been gone? We need to beg going as soon as possible.” Mason emphasized.
“Long enough.” Emily muttered, “maybe she has run away, we don’t have to be so worried, we can go…”
“We are not leaving anybody behind.” Mason interrupted, “everyone who is with us will be well accounted for.”
Emily pursed her lips. She did not seem happy at all. She could see the lines of worry appearing on his forehead and between his eye brows. Why did he care for her safety? Was she not just as a lowly and simple Omega? A common servant too. Something must have happened between this two within the very few minutes they met at the engagement. She did not know very well what it could be, but she did not like it at all. Mason should not be worried about anyone but her!
“Grab some torches.” Mason instructed the servants, “we are going to find her and we are going to find her before anything happens to her. So split.”
“Some stay here with the ladies, some take left and I will take right.” He ordered.
He grabbed a fire torch from the ground, his face set in a grim expression. His wolf was panting in fury and worry within him, their mate might be in danger, and until he is sure that she is not, it shall continue to be restless.
The gentle beat of the drums echoes through the moonlit night, the wolves howled and maidens danced and clapped, leading the bride to be to the center of the crowd where a bright flame burned beneath freshly chopped firewood.Emily glowed under the luminance of the moonlight, you could see her smile, bright and proud beneath the the mesh material of her transparent veil. This day was no doubt the happiest day of her life, she was getting engaged, to an Alpha, the most powerful one she knew. Her pack was equally proud and she could see the satisfied thin lipped smile of her father there in the crowd as she danced her way to the middle where the ceremony will be initiated. All was well, all was perfect, until she realized… her fiancé was nowhere within the crowd. He was gone.“Alpha… you shouldn’t.” Melissa breathed shakily as he nuzzled his face between the bridge of her neck. He let out a soft groan in the back of his throat, but he did not pull away. Just go ahead and do it.” She shook her head, “reject me.”He let out a huff, lifting his hands and running it through his long dark hair. The Alpha was an undeniably handsome man, from his chiseled jaw to his dark hair and sharp eyes, a first glance was all a lady needed to be mesmerized. Even in their distress, Melissa could not help but notice his manly beauty.“Reject you?” He chuckled, unamused. She nodded, a pained look in her eyes.He shook his head. “You are an Omega, you might go rogue if rejected by an Alpha.”Alpha Mason kicked the dirt on the ground. Just a moment ago he was so happy, he was elated even. The one thing that was left to make his life complete, he had finally found it.He had never felt so overwhelmed with happiness and relief. With her in his arms, it was almost as though the universe peeled away before them and his problems vanished like dust blown in the wind. And now, fate was so quick to steal his joy away. How cruel.“It does not matter, I cannot be you
