It’s weird.

I feel nauseous. I have eaten nothing for the past week, so maybe that’s why. But this was no ordinary pang of hunger I was feeling. It’s as if… someone drugged me.

“Argh,” I grumbled as I struggled to open my eyes.

I must’ve passed out a while ago since the last thing I remember was being dragged from the dingy storage room that I call home. I tried to move and my wrists throbbed in pain as the rough rope tightly tied around them chafed my skin.

Judging from the way everything shook and the revving of an engine beneath me, I was most likely in a moving vehicle. It was difficult to sit up because of the bumpy road and the way my hands were secured behind my back, but after mustering barely enough strength to push myself from the hot metal floor, I managed to do so.

My throat was scratchy and dry. Parched, I wanted to scream to demand a cup of water, but my voice wouldn’t work, and I only ended up producing soft whimpers.

Suddenly, the truck halted. I heard the driver’s door open, which was then followed by my owner’s heavy footsteps against the ground. Not long after, the doors opened, letting the harsh sunlight stream into the compartment. I squinted my eyes instinctively and tilted my head away from the light.

“Come on,” I heard him command impatiently. I could almost feel the painful whips on my thighs and back from the times when I was desperate enough to be disobedient, so I attempted to stand up.

With the little strength that I have, I wasn’t surprised that I fell face-first instead. My chest, nose, and forehead stung, and I groaned in pain. The hot metal burned my exposed skin.

“What a pain,” my owner complained, followed by a string of unintelligent words mumbled under his breath. After climbing into the compartment, he wasted no time and dragged me violently out of the vehicle by the collar of my tattered dress. I was thrown onto the asphalt with a painful thud.

“Ah!” I screamed. My bones were on fire, but thankfully, I didn’t seem to have fractured one anywhere. My breaths shallowed, and I shut my eyes tightly as my body ached.

The doors of the back of the truck were then closed and locked, the metal loudly slamming against each other.

“Is this the one?”

The low, unfamiliar voice made me curious, so I slowly opened my eyes once more. I still haven’t gotten used to the sunlight yet, so the back of my eyeballs pulsated, and my vision blurred. Everything was out of focus, but I knew I was on a residential street with colorful houses of different sizes adorning either side of the road.

“Yes, sir,” my owner replied.

I rolled a bit to my side to look up at the other person. Through the haziness, I spotted a pair of bright golden eyes staring down at me coldly—a werewolf’s. There was no mistaking it.

The situation suddenly made sense: I was being sold.

Being a slave until death was no better, but at least I would get hot meals every day from then on instead of a block of cold tofu once a week. It was fortunate that a few werewolves cared enough about us puny humans that a law that required such existed.

“Here,” the werewolf said, handing the other a thin wad of green cash. It was degrading that my life and service were only worth so little.

I closed my eyes to rest. Moments later, I heard the truck drive away, and when it was out of earshot, I felt the man step closer towards where I lay on the pavement.

“You,” he called out in a stern voice, scaring me into looking up at him. His unwavering golden orbs stared at me in a way that sent chills down my spine. He then knelt down, and my stomach immediately lurched, tempting me to vomit.

I forced myself to take shallower and fewer breaths despite the raging pain all over my body as his dominant pheromones invaded my system. My heart pumped loudly and my lungs burned due to the lack of oxygen. I buried my face into the asphalt. It wasn’t enough to block off the smell, but it did get my nose a little further away from him.

The man took notice of my discomfort upon sensing his pheromones, and his frown deepened. With a finger on my chin, he tilted my head up to force me to gaze into his eyes.

“From now on, you will be serving me—Dylan Hayes.”

  • My Mate is the Alpha   Chapter 1: How It All Began

I sat up from the bed groggily upon hearing the now-familiar alarm blare off. My room was small enough that if I reached out an arm, I could open my blinds, which was convenient. The sky outside showed different hues of orange and yellow as the sun was only starting to rise. The alarm stopped automatically a few seconds later. I had been serving Dylan Hayes for a couple of months now. I wouldn’t say that my life was a lot better than before. However, my master rarely cares about what I do as long as I do my job well, so I would say that I’m luckier than most slaves. Although I did get in a lot of trouble before since it wasn’t easy for me to wake up to the alarm set for me in the beginning, but besides that, I think I’m doing great so far. I took a quick shower and wore my usual attire—just a plain white oversized shirt that fell until my mid-thighs. As if th

I dropped my hand to inhale deeply and my eyes quickly scanned the state he was in—bright yet bleary eyes, high temperature, flushed face, and uncontrolled release of sexual pheromones. I’ve never seen a werewolf in heat before, but I was certain. “Isabella,” he whispered into the crook of my neck. I’m going to have to give him a Raudona pill fast. The entire duration of my stay, he’s never been in heat, so I assumed that he’s been taking a regular dose of those heat suppressants. But the problem is that I don’t know where he keeps his stash. “Master, where do you keep your pills?” My body tingled the more I breathe in his pheromones. I’m afraid that if I stay in the same room as him any longer, I might lose my mind. I craned my neck from side to side, looking for a

  • My Mate is the Alpha   Chapter 3: The Marking

I opened my eyes the next morning with the sunlight streaming to the bedroom through the huge glass doors that led to the balcony. I tried to sit up and my body protested in pain, leaving me immobile and huffing on the bed.Last night’s events ran through my head and tears immediately welled up in the corner of my eyes. It was unfair how much leverage werewolves had over humans just because they could affect us with their pheromones. With a shaky hand, I dabbed at the swollen skin behind my ear with my fingertips. I felt normal, but when he bit me there last night, I couldn’t possibly have only imagined the strange sensation I had then. Did the pain only wake me up? That was likely. But it was just so odd that I couldn’t help but overthink that perhaps something else happened at that moment.Sudden

There is one certain way to sever a bond made through marking, though.Death.I shivered at the thought and hugged my knees tighter. Dylan… He’s not going to kill me, is he?It’s not like he couldn’t, either. He has an entire pack of around a couple hundred werewolves under his disposal, after all. Dylan doesn’t even have to do the dirty work.“He’s more of a chemist than a medical doctor,” he continued to explain, snapping me out of my terrifying train of thoughts. “But I guess I should call him to come over tonight to tend to your bruises first.”“Bruises?” I looked down at my body, and true enough, my pale skin was dotted with red hickeys and

Dylan had instructed me to stand idly in the corner of the mess hall during their meeting. I did as I was told, but I couldn’t help but feel anxious and uncomfortable being in the presence of so many werewolves. “I am sure that you all know the reason why this meeting is called,” Dylan said. He sat in his usual seat at the head of the table with his chin resting on his interlocked fingers. For the first time since I came to serve him, all the seats were taken. I now see why he kept the ridiculously long table in the house. A werewolf raised a hand, and when he was granted permission to speak, he turned to look at me and growled. I flinched in fear and took a step back, pressing my spine against the wall. He pointed an accusing finger at me and said, “Do we not need to get rid of the slave, alpha? Even we ha

I felt my body tremble as something soft and warm was pressed against my lids, preventing me from opening my eyes. My ears were ringing with the screams of the doctor, and as my pulse pounded obnoxiously loud against my temples, the terrifying sound got more and more muffled until I could no longer hear anything but the rapid rhythm of my heartbeat. Although I didn’t see what had happened, the noise was enough to render my legs weak and make me want to vomit. Just when I was on the verge of losing my mind, I heard Dylan whisper in my ear softly, as if he didn’t just tear apart a fellow werewolf like how one would a cardboard. “Can you stand up?” I surprisingly managed to shake my head, albeit meekly. Suddenly, I heard multiple footsteps shuffling in the hallway, followed by the doors bursting open. I raised a sha

I don’t know how much time has passed when I awoke yet again. I sat up groggily from the bed, only to realize that it was nighttime and Dylan wasn’t sleeping beside me. I vaguely remember him telling me that it was normal for partners to share the same bed, so I just assumed that he would accompany me there. My backache was gone, but my joints were still stiff, which was no surprise considering that I apparently had been out for a week. I got out of bed and wobbled towards the door. The hallways were cold and all the lights in the manor were turned off, so I could only assume that it was some time in the middle of the night. “Argh,” I mumbled under my breath upon feeling the chill stinging my bare legs. I was tempted to go back into the room and grab a blanket to wrap myself with, but that would be rude since I was still one of the household’s slaves after al

My heart thumped loudly against my chest. Dylan stuck out his tongue, begging my lips for entrance. So I opened my mouth wider to let him in. I mindlessly moaned into the kiss and arched my back. His hands roamed my body. He squeezed and rubbed the skin under my shirt, sending jolts of pleasure up my spine. Not long after, I found myself lying down on the sofa with Dylan on top of me, grinding his hard arousal against my thigh. “Dylan, are you in heat again?” I asked in between breaths once he pulled away from the kiss to seductively nibble on my ear. It surprised me how his name stumbled out of my lips so effortlessly. “No,” he whispered in reply, his warm breath tickling my skin. “Do you want me to stop?” Of course, I didn’t. • My Mate is the Alpha   Epilogue

Felix watched the cherry blossom trees through the window. A book that he was supposed to read sat on his lap, but the last thing he wanted to do was study. The weather seemed too nice to spend the day doing something as exhausting as studying. If his tutor would allow him so, he would’ve run out to the grassy field outside and laid down as pink petals rain over him while he admired the clear skies. He heard the door creak open and he failed to suppress his groan. Begrudgingly, he took his book and opened it to a random page to pretend that he had been doing what he was supposed to be doing all this time. “It’s been a while.” He looked up from the page he was staring at and found Addie hovering by the doorway. She was wearing a dress and light makeup while a small smile hung on her lips. It was his first time seeing her in a couple of months, and in such garb at that! Felix let his book fall onto the floor as he jumped out of his seat to run to her. A

“So, you’re still not over that plan of yours to convince humans to cooperate with us?” Addie questioned Enzo with a raised eyebrow. She sighed and leaned against the backrest of her chair. “I thought we were going to use the high-security personnel? They don’t hire humans for that.” “You see, that security team’s strength is in numbers,” the werewolf began to explain. “They are excellent individually, of course. But their strength is amplified by much because they work as a single unit.” “And so?” “Dylan. Ash. Ethan,” he said as he raised a finger for each name before pointing a thumb at himself. “And me. We’re going to be taking them on one-by-one, as much as we can.” Felix gasped in amazement. “Wow, really?” “Yes. Then…” he leaned towards the table, pressing his palms against it for support. His red eyes glinted with mischief, just as it always did whenever he comes up with an idea he’s confi

Addie took a cautious step back into the hut. At the opposite corner of the room, she found her father sitting on the floor with his hands handcuffed behind him. She expected Felix to at least land a punch, but surprisingly, Mr. Barlowe was unscathed. She wasn’t certain whether Felix being able to overwhelm her father by his pheromones alone was frightening or impressive. The scent of familiar pheromones still lingered in the air, but it wasn’t enough to make it difficult to breathe. To her right, she saw Felix opening a window to air out the room. She then removed her helmet and goggles to properly meet his gaze. “Hey,” he said with a small smile. With a tilt of his head, he gestured towards Mr. Barlowe who was sitting silently in the corner. “If you want to talk to him, you should do so before he passes out.” That’s when Addie realized that Felix had deliberately avoided leaving any noticeable injury on her father out of consideration for her. She smiled ba

Addie realized that it became easier to breathe. Her lungs didn’t burn and the lightheadedness was gone. She took a deep breath and true enough, Felix had stopped emitting his pheromones. He was only a half-blood but his pheromones could easily overwhelm full-blooded werewolves. She shuddered to think about just how strong his father, Dylan Hayes, was. “Do you feel better now?” Felix looked up at her, his eyes back to their ordinarily dark hue. Without the golden eyes, his features were prominently Isabella’s. “Yes. Thank you.” Then, they pulled away from the hug. He thought about how nice it felt while it lasted and was guilty for thinking that his sudden pheromone outburst had at least amounted to something. Felix grabbed his goggles and helmet that were left abandoned on the dirty floor moments prior to put them back on. But just when he was about to, Addie spoke. “About earlier…” His hands froze and he felt her gaze on him, but for some re

It had only been a few months but the nostalgia hit Felix harder than he expected. It was difficult to properly look at the familiar poorly maintained streets and shanties through the dark tint of the van windows and his oversized goggles as they drove through. There were a bunch of stalls and carts set up on either side of the road, just as it always did at this time of the year. Though many were still skeptical about the whole werewolf-human coexistence propaganda, it had become a tradition to treat the presidential visit in the outskirts as some kind of a festival. Some stalls had a display of an assortment of homemade delicacies while others advertised fun games. Felix remembered running around the neighborhood as a child with a few loose change in his pocket. All the games and food made him excited so James would make him wear contact lenses despite his protests. When he grew older, they would have their own business set up on the road instead of celebrating. Ei

“It might snow today.” Felix turned to his right and found Addie. She had her head tilted up to join him in staring at the night sky. Thick, gray clouds made it impossible to see a single star. “Seems so.” “You nervous?” She craned her neck to meet his gaze. He should’ve felt embarrassed to be caught staring, but he kept the eye contact, letting himself drown into her now -familiar silvery eyes. Addie stared back, a small smile slowly making its way to her lips, “You’re nervous.” “Does it show?” “Yes,” Addie held up a hand to cup his face. Gently, she grazed his cheekbone with her thumb. “Your eyes turned yellow again.” She had her hair up into a ponytail and he wondered whether the cold wasn’t bothering her at all, so his gaze trailed down to her red ears then to her bare neck. Wordlessly, he took off his scarf and wrapped it around her. She seemed to be surprised at the gesture but grateful nonetheless. It was the scarf his mother ha

Isabella’s bullet wound had reduced into an almost-scar. There was still some noticeable redness and swelling on her skin, but she already regained full mobility on her right arm. Nonetheless, when she decided to finally get out of bed that morning, Dylan insisted on assisting her. Despite finding his concern flattering, she couldn’t help but get slightly annoyed at the exaggeration of it all. Craning her head to her left, she cocked a brow at her lover who had a strong arm snaked around her waist to support half of her body weight as she walked. “Dylan, my injury is on my shoulder. Even if my wound isn’t healed yet, I can still walk just fine on my own.” It took a few weeks for his pheromones to heal her wound as the bullet was lodged quite deeply into her flesh, almost penetrating through her back. But for a human, that was already more than impressive. “But…” he looked back at her with a frown and an adorable subtle pout. “What if you fall and hit

“You should live on without me.” Dylan’s voice echoed in her ears, drowning out the sound of the breeze blowing and the curtains flapping. Amidst her shock, she only had enough strength to slowly shake her head and say, “No. I-I don’t want to.” “Without my pheromones, the first few months would be difficult,” he smiled wider as he explained, but the bitterness in it and in his voice was still evident. “But since you’re human, your body can adjust to it slowly.” No, that’s not what I meant, she thought. Tears blurred her vision, and the painful lump in her throat didn’t allow her voice to come out. Isabella wanted to argue or move to embrace him and keep him from leaving. How can I live without you? He cupped her face and wiped away her tears with a thumb. His touch was gentle…too gentle. It felt as if he was paranoid about bruising her skin again. “After all, this bond wasn’t meant to happen in the first place.” His

The sound of the gates creaking open gave Isabella the strength to snap out of her fear and push Lucas away. She spotted a familiar figure standing by the gates through her peripheral view and she swore she felt her heart drop to her stomach right then. Slowly, she turned her head and, true enough, Dylan was right there, out of breath and shooting daggers at Lucas with his dark eyes. Lucas, confused and annoyed at the interference, followed her line of vision and found the werewolf standing a few yards away from where they sat. He sighed and stood up, returning the same menace he was giving him. “I assume your Isabella’s husband?” “D-Dylan…” Lucas briefly looked at her past his shoulder before scoffing at him. “‘Dylan’? I heard people around here call you ‘Kent’.” Dylan didn’t bother replying. He turned his gaze to Isabella, who remained frozen in fear on her blanket, and took brisk steps towards her. He noticed how her eyes darkened with his every st
