Dylan had instructed me to stand idly in the corner of the mess hall during their meeting. I did as I was told, but I couldn’t help but feel anxious and uncomfortable being in the presence of so many werewolves.
“I am sure that you all know the reason why this meeting is called,” Dylan said. He sat in his usual seat at the head of the table with his chin resting on his interlocked fingers. For the first time since I came to serve him, all the seats were taken. I now see why he kept the ridiculously long table in the house.
A werewolf raised a hand, and when he was granted permission to speak, he turned to look at me and growled. I flinched in fear and took a step back, pressing my spine against the wall.
He pointed an accusing finger at me and said, “Do we not need to get rid of the slave, alpha? Even we have not bothered taking our own slaves here for the sake of confidentiality.”
I raised my chin a little, just enough to meet Dylan’s eyes. He was looking straight at me with the stoic expression that I’ve always had trouble interpreting. Then, after a few moments, he sighed and relaxed against the backrest of his chair, turning his attention to the werewolf who raised the question.
“I don’t remember forbidding you from bringing in your slaves,” he replied. “Besides, if my slave does as much as utter a single word about this meeting, I will get rid of her myself.”
My chin quivered, and I dropped my gaze. I heard a few snickers from the other werewolves at the table as I fidgeted with my fingers. I never imagined that I could feel humiliated and afraid at the same time. Taking a deep breath, I realized I could no longer catch the sweet smell of Dylan’s pheromones on my hands.
“If there are no more complaints, then I suggest we get back to the agendas at hand,” he continued to say after the commotion died down. “I’m glad that despite the short notice, everyone still managed to attend.”
“I’d like to take the floor, alpha,” the blonde Cynthia stated. With the tone she was using, it sounded more of an announcement than a request. Dylan only nodded at her before she stood up and walked towards the head of the table where he sat. “They have bombed yet another one of our clinics last night, as you may have all heard by now.”
I tried my hardest not to listen, but my curiosity got the best of me. It wasn’t hard to act nonchalant as I stared at my feet that had been soiled with calluses and blisters from running around bare.
“We have lost thousands of bottles of Raudona pills worth millions of dollars.”
Raudona pills?
So this pack is the one behind producing them? The fact that their very own alpha had a shortage of Raudona pills confused me. But more than that, the news of one of their clinics being bombed was baffling. It seems like another pack was trying to pick a fight with them.
“Do we have suspects?” a she-wolf with bloodshot eyes and equally red hair raised a hand. “The same explosives were planted in one of our warehouses and three clinics for the past two months. Surely, the investigation has some progress.”
“Oh, the investigation showed results, indeed,” Cynthia responded. A bone-chilling grimace replaced her playful smirk. “A witness stepped forward.”
“That’s good. We finally have a lead so we can—“
“The humans are rebelling.”
My eyes flew open in shock, and my head automatically snapped up in attention. I figured the werewolves would not make such a joke, but it sounded so impossible that I just wanted to confirm it. The look of anger on Cynthia’s face was enough for me to know that it was indeed true.
I received a few looks my way and my intimidation towards them crept back up. I know I shouldn’t dare, but the news of some mere humans being able to stir up some trouble with the werewolves without getting caught gave me a glimmer of hope.
“That’s impossible!” another werewolf interjected as he stood up, banging his palms on the hardwood table. “Humans are uneducated! How can they even—!”
“That’s what I asked detective Travis,” she replied with an icy tone. “He seems to believe that it was an inside job.”
The table was then immediately filled with whispers, and suspicious looks were thrown. A werewolf’s ego makes it impossible for them to fully trust others—even if it was another werewolf in their own pack. I found it fascinating. One would think that being in the same pack would be like treating each other as family, but that wasn’t the case at all.
If I was one of the humans responsible for the bombing, I would be undeniably filled with satisfaction watching the werewolves try to bite each other’s necks just to save their own skin.
My eyes must’ve reflected what I was thinking that the second I made eye contact with Dylan, his golden orbs shone with warning and contempt. I bit down on my lip to suppress a smile.
Suddenly, a knock on the door echoed, interrupting the upheaval in the room. I automatically ran to open it, revealing a middle-aged man in a white lab coat. I didn’t have to look at what color his eyes were to know that he was a werewolf.
“Dr. Boyle,” Dylan greeted him. He stood up from his seat and walked towards the door before reaching out a hand for a shake. “You’re early.”
“Yes,” the doctor nodded, dropping the seemingly heavy leather handbag on the floor near his feet with a loud thud. “I apologize, sir. I wasn’t aware that there would be a pack meeting at this hour.”
“It’s fine,” he then grabbed my wrist and stepped out of the room, pulling me with him. After closing the door behind him, he continued, “My servant is bruised. I’d like to have her treated”
“Oh...” The doctor seemed shocked, which I understood. It was extremely rare for werewolves to have their slaves taken to the doctor, after all. He looked like he wanted to say something, but decided against it and nodded obediently in reply instead.
“I’ll be over once the meeting is done,” Dylan said to me. He raised a hand to pat my head, and I felt a surge of strength and comfort flow into me through his touch. Similar to what he did earlier by the main door, he was giving me his pheromones again. I naturally felt more at ease.
From the corner of my eye, the doctor’s mouth fell agape at the unexpected events unfolding before him without warning. He only snapped out of his reverie when the alpha had instructed him to take me to his bedroom.
I led the way, the heels of the leather shoes that matched his bag tapping against the marble floors. The silence was awkward and suffocating as I could almost hear the lingering unanswered questions in the air. I was confused how Dylan could act in such a way in front of a werewolf doctor.
Maybe having a human slave as a partner wasn’t as embarrassing as I thought?
As soon as the statement invaded my mind, I wanted to burst out laughing. There was no way. An alpha and a slave?
“I don’t see any bruises,” the doctor said once we got into the room. He pulled out the chair from the desk and gestured for me to take a seat. “Take off your clothes for an examination.”
I did as I was told, albeit hesitantly, as I felt uncomfortable getting naked when I’m alone with a middle-aged man in a bedroom, before sitting down on the chair. His eyes raked over my body to inspect the bruising hickeys on my torso.
He understood immediately where the marks came from, but didn’t dare to ask questions. He fished out a tube of ointment from his leather handbag, squeezing an ample amount on his finger and then applying them on my skin.
I flinched in pain upon contact. He wasn’t even trying to be gentle at all, as expected. With every stroke, I would instinctively move a bit farther from him, wishing that he would get the message and apply the medicine carefully. I think he did, though, but his ego as a werewolf told him not to.
“Stop moving,” he said in annoyance. He then grabbed my shoulders and forced me to sit up straight. His strong grip was as painful as him repeatedly poking at my bruises.
“Ah!” I couldn’t help but exclaim. His annoyance grew, and he tightened his grasp even more, making me squirm in my seat in an attempt to free myself. “Please stop. I-It hurts!”
“Listen here, you pathetic bitch,” he said coldly, his eyes throwing daggers at me. I trembled in fear. “I, a werewolf, am doing you a great service by treating your bruises. If I were you—”
His sentence was left hanging when the door burst open. Dylan stood by the doorway, panting, as his amber eyes showed nothing but hatred while he stared at the doctor. When he spoke, his tone was calm, but there was something menacing and intimidating about it.
“Dr. Boyle,” he called out. I felt the doctor’s grip loosen as his hand began to tremble. “Did you or did you not see me mix my pheromones with this girl’s scent?”
“I-I saw, alpha…”
The tension in the room was overpowering, and I suddenly felt the urge to run away even when the alpha’s anger wasn’t directed at me. “Master?”
He looked at me, and I swore his gaze softened a little. Then, he took off his suit jacket to place it on my shoulders. I was confused, but grateful at the gesture, nonetheless, wrapping the garment tighter around me.
Leaning down, he whispered in my ear, “Close your eyes.”
I didn’t hesitate to obey. Not long after, I heard a low growl followed by the sounds of flesh being torn and bones cracking and the doctor’s scream of agony.
I felt my body tremble as something soft and warm was pressed against my lids, preventing me from opening my eyes. My ears were ringing with the screams of the doctor, and as my pulse pounded obnoxiously loud against my temples, the terrifying sound got more and more muffled until I could no longer hear anything but the rapid rhythm of my heartbeat. Although I didn’t see what had happened, the noise was enough to render my legs weak and make me want to vomit. Just when I was on the verge of losing my mind, I heard Dylan whisper in my ear softly, as if he didn’t just tear apart a fellow werewolf like how one would a cardboard. “Can you stand up?” I surprisingly managed to shake my head, albeit meekly. Suddenly, I heard multiple footsteps shuffling in the hallway, followed by the doors bursting open. I raised a sha
I don’t know how much time has passed when I awoke yet again. I sat up groggily from the bed, only to realize that it was nighttime and Dylan wasn’t sleeping beside me. I vaguely remember him telling me that it was normal for partners to share the same bed, so I just assumed that he would accompany me there. My backache was gone, but my joints were still stiff, which was no surprise considering that I apparently had been out for a week. I got out of bed and wobbled towards the door. The hallways were cold and all the lights in the manor were turned off, so I could only assume that it was some time in the middle of the night. “Argh,” I mumbled under my breath upon feeling the chill stinging my bare legs. I was tempted to go back into the room and grab a blanket to wrap myself with, but that would be rude since I was still one of the household’s slaves after al
My heart thumped loudly against my chest. Dylan stuck out his tongue, begging my lips for entrance. So I opened my mouth wider to let him in. I mindlessly moaned into the kiss and arched my back. His hands roamed my body. He squeezed and rubbed the skin under my shirt, sending jolts of pleasure up my spine. Not long after, I found myself lying down on the sofa with Dylan on top of me, grinding his hard arousal against my thigh. “Dylan, are you in heat again?” I asked in between breaths once he pulled away from the kiss to seductively nibble on my ear. It surprised me how his name stumbled out of my lips so effortlessly. “No,” he whispered in reply, his warm breath tickling my skin. “Do you want me to stop?” Of course, I didn’t. Though embarrassed, I opened my mouth t
I flung my arms around his neck and stood on my tiptoes to compensate for the height difference. Dylan was just much too tall for me and he had to slouch to kiss me. He realized immediately what I was trying to do so he lowered his arms, and after one swift move, he was suddenly carrying me. I coiled my legs around his torso so tight that I could feel the hard muscles under his clothes against my skin. “We had some unfinished business…” he said after pulling away from the kiss. “Right, Isabella?” The kiss and the intoxicating smell of his pheromones have left me panting for air. I nodded meekly in reply as he started walking towards the bed with me still in his arms. “Aren’t I heavy?” He leaned in to peck the mark behind my ear. “You think this small body of yours is
I unsurprisingly woke up to an empty bed.My ticks didn't allow me to rest easy—although the other slaves insisted that I do, per Dylan's orders—so I helped around with the house chores all morning. As usual, I shared my breakfast with them as we sat on the floor in the corner of the dining room. The events of last night and the fulfillment of my sense of purpose had left me feeling giddy for the first time in a while.Dylan unusually came home around lunch. What was even more strange, however, was the fact that he strode into the mansion with a tall blonde with silver eyes all over him—Cynthia.Unconsciously shrinking into my yet another
I honestly have to stop passing out.The moment I woke up, the first sensation that my hazy brain was able to register was the painful burn in my lungs as I breathed. I groaned while I propped myself up onto my elbows. Harsh sunlight streaming into the room made me squint but surprisingly, I managed to spot Dylan sitting down by his desk at the opposite corner of the room. The bed creaked ever so slightly as I adjusted my position, leaning onto the headboard instead. But the sound still caught his attention and he snapped his head to look at me. Once I fully adjusted to the light and my vision became clearer, I saw the circular glasses sitting on top of his nose. I thought about how it made him look a lot older than he was."You're up," he said. He stood up before striding acro
I was expecting to wake up the next morning to an empty bed again, but the aggravated banging on the bedroom door was what stirred me out of my sleep. When I opened my eyes, Dylan was already up and hurriedly throwing a robe on. He had a frightening scowl on his face as he marched towards the door before flinging it open to reveal a trembling servant standing outside. I sat up and rubbed off any remaining traces of sleep from my eyes then wrapped the blanket around me to hide my nakedness underneath. “Is everything okay?” “Speak,” he menacingly told the servant. Even without emitting pheromones, his chilling tone and intimidating glare were enough to send any human weak on the knees. The servant, whom I remember as James, visibly shook as he raised a hand that held a wireles
“Look at what we have here,” I said, pushing the door open with a hand. Under the dim lighting, I counted around five rebels rummaging through the stuff in the study. They were all clad in black clothing from head to toe and their faces were covered in a way that only their eyes were revealed. Upon the announcement of our arrival, they paused and turned their heads to stare at us in shock. “You’re rebelling against the werewolves, right?”“Human slaves,” one mumbled, recovering from his shock and stepping forward. It was a male, based on his physique. “I thought the Hayes household didn’t have slaves”I remember how surprised most of the werewolves were when they came over for a pack meeting weeks ago. For some reason, Dylan
Felix watched the cherry blossom trees through the window. A book that he was supposed to read sat on his lap, but the last thing he wanted to do was study. The weather seemed too nice to spend the day doing something as exhausting as studying. If his tutor would allow him so, he would’ve run out to the grassy field outside and laid down as pink petals rain over him while he admired the clear skies. He heard the door creak open and he failed to suppress his groan. Begrudgingly, he took his book and opened it to a random page to pretend that he had been doing what he was supposed to be doing all this time. “It’s been a while.” He looked up from the page he was staring at and found Addie hovering by the doorway. She was wearing a dress and light makeup while a small smile hung on her lips. It was his first time seeing her in a couple of months, and in such garb at that! Felix let his book fall onto the floor as he jumped out of his seat to run to her. A
“So, you’re still not over that plan of yours to convince humans to cooperate with us?” Addie questioned Enzo with a raised eyebrow. She sighed and leaned against the backrest of her chair. “I thought we were going to use the high-security personnel? They don’t hire humans for that.” “You see, that security team’s strength is in numbers,” the werewolf began to explain. “They are excellent individually, of course. But their strength is amplified by much because they work as a single unit.” “And so?” “Dylan. Ash. Ethan,” he said as he raised a finger for each name before pointing a thumb at himself. “And me. We’re going to be taking them on one-by-one, as much as we can.” Felix gasped in amazement. “Wow, really?” “Yes. Then…” he leaned towards the table, pressing his palms against it for support. His red eyes glinted with mischief, just as it always did whenever he comes up with an idea he’s confi
Addie took a cautious step back into the hut. At the opposite corner of the room, she found her father sitting on the floor with his hands handcuffed behind him. She expected Felix to at least land a punch, but surprisingly, Mr. Barlowe was unscathed. She wasn’t certain whether Felix being able to overwhelm her father by his pheromones alone was frightening or impressive. The scent of familiar pheromones still lingered in the air, but it wasn’t enough to make it difficult to breathe. To her right, she saw Felix opening a window to air out the room. She then removed her helmet and goggles to properly meet his gaze. “Hey,” he said with a small smile. With a tilt of his head, he gestured towards Mr. Barlowe who was sitting silently in the corner. “If you want to talk to him, you should do so before he passes out.” That’s when Addie realized that Felix had deliberately avoided leaving any noticeable injury on her father out of consideration for her. She smiled ba
Addie realized that it became easier to breathe. Her lungs didn’t burn and the lightheadedness was gone. She took a deep breath and true enough, Felix had stopped emitting his pheromones. He was only a half-blood but his pheromones could easily overwhelm full-blooded werewolves. She shuddered to think about just how strong his father, Dylan Hayes, was. “Do you feel better now?” Felix looked up at her, his eyes back to their ordinarily dark hue. Without the golden eyes, his features were prominently Isabella’s. “Yes. Thank you.” Then, they pulled away from the hug. He thought about how nice it felt while it lasted and was guilty for thinking that his sudden pheromone outburst had at least amounted to something. Felix grabbed his goggles and helmet that were left abandoned on the dirty floor moments prior to put them back on. But just when he was about to, Addie spoke. “About earlier…” His hands froze and he felt her gaze on him, but for some re
It had only been a few months but the nostalgia hit Felix harder than he expected. It was difficult to properly look at the familiar poorly maintained streets and shanties through the dark tint of the van windows and his oversized goggles as they drove through. There were a bunch of stalls and carts set up on either side of the road, just as it always did at this time of the year. Though many were still skeptical about the whole werewolf-human coexistence propaganda, it had become a tradition to treat the presidential visit in the outskirts as some kind of a festival. Some stalls had a display of an assortment of homemade delicacies while others advertised fun games. Felix remembered running around the neighborhood as a child with a few loose change in his pocket. All the games and food made him excited so James would make him wear contact lenses despite his protests. When he grew older, they would have their own business set up on the road instead of celebrating. Ei
“It might snow today.” Felix turned to his right and found Addie. She had her head tilted up to join him in staring at the night sky. Thick, gray clouds made it impossible to see a single star. “Seems so.” “You nervous?” She craned her neck to meet his gaze. He should’ve felt embarrassed to be caught staring, but he kept the eye contact, letting himself drown into her now -familiar silvery eyes. Addie stared back, a small smile slowly making its way to her lips, “You’re nervous.” “Does it show?” “Yes,” Addie held up a hand to cup his face. Gently, she grazed his cheekbone with her thumb. “Your eyes turned yellow again.” She had her hair up into a ponytail and he wondered whether the cold wasn’t bothering her at all, so his gaze trailed down to her red ears then to her bare neck. Wordlessly, he took off his scarf and wrapped it around her. She seemed to be surprised at the gesture but grateful nonetheless. It was the scarf his mother ha
Isabella’s bullet wound had reduced into an almost-scar. There was still some noticeable redness and swelling on her skin, but she already regained full mobility on her right arm. Nonetheless, when she decided to finally get out of bed that morning, Dylan insisted on assisting her. Despite finding his concern flattering, she couldn’t help but get slightly annoyed at the exaggeration of it all. Craning her head to her left, she cocked a brow at her lover who had a strong arm snaked around her waist to support half of her body weight as she walked. “Dylan, my injury is on my shoulder. Even if my wound isn’t healed yet, I can still walk just fine on my own.” It took a few weeks for his pheromones to heal her wound as the bullet was lodged quite deeply into her flesh, almost penetrating through her back. But for a human, that was already more than impressive. “But…” he looked back at her with a frown and an adorable subtle pout. “What if you fall and hit
“You should live on without me.” Dylan’s voice echoed in her ears, drowning out the sound of the breeze blowing and the curtains flapping. Amidst her shock, she only had enough strength to slowly shake her head and say, “No. I-I don’t want to.” “Without my pheromones, the first few months would be difficult,” he smiled wider as he explained, but the bitterness in it and in his voice was still evident. “But since you’re human, your body can adjust to it slowly.” No, that’s not what I meant, she thought. Tears blurred her vision, and the painful lump in her throat didn’t allow her voice to come out. Isabella wanted to argue or move to embrace him and keep him from leaving. How can I live without you? He cupped her face and wiped away her tears with a thumb. His touch was gentle…too gentle. It felt as if he was paranoid about bruising her skin again. “After all, this bond wasn’t meant to happen in the first place.” His
The sound of the gates creaking open gave Isabella the strength to snap out of her fear and push Lucas away. She spotted a familiar figure standing by the gates through her peripheral view and she swore she felt her heart drop to her stomach right then. Slowly, she turned her head and, true enough, Dylan was right there, out of breath and shooting daggers at Lucas with his dark eyes. Lucas, confused and annoyed at the interference, followed her line of vision and found the werewolf standing a few yards away from where they sat. He sighed and stood up, returning the same menace he was giving him. “I assume your Isabella’s husband?” “D-Dylan…” Lucas briefly looked at her past his shoulder before scoffing at him. “‘Dylan’? I heard people around here call you ‘Kent’.” Dylan didn’t bother replying. He turned his gaze to Isabella, who remained frozen in fear on her blanket, and took brisk steps towards her. He noticed how her eyes darkened with his every st
