THREE WEEKS LATER
CONRI'S POV. These three weeks were packed with pieces of training upon training; I watched her grow into a beautiful woman and a beautiful soldier. Her confidence had increased from the last time I saw her, probably because the last time I saw her, she was a shy, timid girl, and when she came back, I met her completely battered and bruised. She was strong and fit to be the Luna she should have been, but I was selfishly grateful for Howard's stupidity that made him reject her and push her into my laps, but that doesn't mean I won't make them all pay for what they did to her. The fact that her father was also in support of her execution annoyed me greatly. Our relationship wasn't what I was expecting it would be. We weren't all lovey-dovey like I expected, but she trusted me immensely and trust, they say, is the foundation of every relationship. I'd promised that I would take her back to the pack, and now I was fulfilling my promise to her. Jared, the camp make-up artist, was with her in the room presently, making her look like a completely different person. I'd given him a heads up of what I wanted, and I hoped he would deliver the best. When Daciana walked out of the room, she was almost recognisable to him because he knew who she was but to others, they would have a hard time figuring it out. She looked entirely different. Her blonde sun-like hair was not dyed red, the exact colour of blood. Her baby face was pulled back, making her cheeks look sharp and her jaw a bit pointed. Her evergreen eyes were replaced with black contacts, and her lips were clad in red lipstick. She looked beautiful but not like Daciana-beautiful but beautiful all the same. The makeover had taken not less than four hours to make. “How do I look?” She asked, and I realized that her voice had reduced in its frequency. It was a bit lower now. I hoped it wasn't a permanent change or anything. “Different. Not like the real Daciana.” I smiled. She grinned. “ So it's believable, right? I was a bit worried that they would see the real me.” “Have you looked in the mirror?” I asked. “No, I was a bit worried about what I would see.” She looked down at her hands as she fidgeted with them. “Come on.” I placed my hands on her lower back, ushered her into her room, and showed her the mirror. Her eyes widened in shock. “Wow! I look so different.” “I did tell you that I had the camp's greatest makeover artist.” I smiled. “I hope he isn't just good at making people. I'd like to have him do my makeup when all this is over.” She grinned at the mirror. She said it so innocently that it would be weird if I got angry about it, but it did make me frown in anger. The thought of a man making her look pretty every day bothered me. “I'll think about it and see what I can do,” I said. My voice had gone lower, and my eyes had turned darker. All of these she would have noticed if she paid attention, but she was busy admiring the masterpiece on her face. “It's a good thing he had the thought of making me wear a mask; otherwise, I wouldn't have been able to make the makeup look as perfect as this.” She said with relief, and I also felt a bit of relief from that statement as well because that would mean that he wouldn't be privileged to touch or see her daily. My eyes looked down at her back. Her dress had a little opening at the back, showing me her flawless, milky skin. It was so tempting that I had to resist touching it in order not to send the wrong message across. “Are you ready?” I asked her, my eyes glazing into hers through the mirror. “I am unless you want me to wear something else.” She asked. My wolf growled within me. Hell, yes, I did want her to wear something else. Her back was too exposed for my liking, and her cleavage was right outside for the world to see, which was crazy because it was similar to what she wore in the pack before she left. “Not really, but hold on.” I quickly went to my room, pulled out a royal blue coat with a mockingbird golden pin, and went to her room to see that she hadn't left her position. “Wear this cape to protect yourself from the weather. ” I half expected her to tell me that there was nothing wrong with the weather, but she said nothing and wore it, pinning the edges of the cape with the mockingbird at her cleavage, and I smiled with satisfaction. I held her hand and pulled her out of the room. “Wait for me here, okay? I need to address my men before we move.” “Okay, I'll be waiting.” She smiled, and I jogged off to my men. They were lined up in the clear field of the forest, their hands at their back and their legs spread out. “We've spent days and weeks and months staying out in the camp; we've lost a lot of men trying to protect our pack from external attacks, and I'm sure by now, a lot of us, if not all of us, are much stronger and powerful than we were when we left the pack. We've come to trust each other more than we trust ourselves because we know that the person standing beside us will have our backs in war, and I would like us to continue with that.” My eyes scanned through the rows and rows of men who trained in the hardships of war. “Don't let anything you hear in the pack make your trust and faith in your fellow soldiers waver. Am I clear?” “Yes, sir.” The sounds of men thundered in the air, and I gave them a hard smile. “Now we return to our families and friends, and we also silently grieve for the families of our lost men. Now we return with pride and honour.” I yelled, and they screamed with a war cry, “With pride and honour.” The journey back home started, and all through the l soldiers sang songs of war, songs of celebration, songs of mourning, songs of victory. The air was filled with mixed feelings, but it was mainly of joy. Our horses were in a separate hidden stable, the fastest means of transportation through these woods. Looking back at the stress and arguments I went through just to get the Alpha to give each soldier a horse, I didn't share the opinion that only men with status could have a horse in the military. I didn't want my men to have to walk miles on foot to fight a war when their energies would easily drain. Howard was a stingy ruler, and it is not like buying a thousand horses would dent the packs' riches. These men deserved every bit of VIP treatment they could get because they worked for it. They were the ones that put the pack in the place it is now. Not Howard. Daciana didn't have a horse of her own, so she had to ride with me and did I mention how much of a torture it was? Having her so close to me that the rose scent of her bathing soap invaded my nose whenever the wind blew or the honey scent of her hair shampoo when the breeze danced with her hair. A day had almost gone, and most of my men were tired, so we had to rest for the night. Daciana offered to get our horse to the camping ground and told me, more like she ordered me, to hold on to her waist as she led the horse and our men to the open space. I pulled her to the stream that was just meters away from where we were based while the men worked on making a quick tent for us. “What are we doing here?” She asked as she stared at the bag in my hands. “I thought you'd want to go for a swim,” I said, remembering how she loved swimming back at our campground. “But we can go back if…” She leaned in and pecked my cheeks. “Thank you.” She went behind a tree and pulled off her clothes while I busied myself with bringing out her nightwear with a very thick sweater because of how cold the night and the water were. The sound of the water splash told me it was safe to look, but instead, I moved away, giving her her personal space while I stood guard meters away from where she bathed. Everywhere was silent except the sound of water until I didn't hear anything. I strained my ears, trying to hear if she was on land wearing her clothes, but nothing. It was quiet. Out of curiosity, I turned, and there it was, the lake as still and calm as the night until I saw air bubbles come up.DACIANA'S POVAs I swam across the lake, I stared at the moon with its beautiful light illuminating the lake, giving it a glittery look. It looked beautiful and captivating, like scattering diamonds over water. My bones, which had been aching all through the ride, were now relaxed in the water. My muscles felt good as well. I stopped swimming and looked at the spot where Corni was standing guard, and his back turned to me. I was grateful for meeting him and for knowing him, too. He was a good man, and the way he didn't think twice to help me really amazed me, even though Howard was also his Alpha. If we were caught, it could be seen as treason, and we would be put to our deaths. I decided to do one more lap before I got out of the water when I felt something coil around my leg. I tried to shake it off, thinking it was seaweed, but instead, I felt it coil around my two legs. I wiggled my legs together, but it wouldn't budge. I looked inside the water, and it was a freaking seaweed,
CORNI'S POVWhen I woke up the next morning, before the crack of dawn, Daciana was fitted against my body like a glove. Her hands were over my neck, our faces were close to each other, her body was pressed against me like a sandwich, and her leg was intertwined with mine. I smiled at our position and what I wouldn't give to wake up like this every morning. Last night had given me such a scare that I didn't want to risk it anymore. I wanted to go at her own pace and give her time to want and desire me herself, but after what happened, I'm starting to rethink my decision.I gently pulled her off me and got off the small makeshift bed, and she hugged the pillow as soon as I left. I walked out of the tent and mindlinked all the soldiers to get ready to move. I took one of the buckets we had and fetched a good amount of water for Daci that she would use to take her bath. I didn't want her anywhere near that lake. I sent my men to the lake to have their bathe, but not without holding a
DACIANA'S POVCompletely ignoring my father's presence, I stared at Ava, amusement dancing in my eyes. “Of course. That's if you have any business with going to the other side of the world. I haven't been in these parts longer than two months, and I'm sure I would remember meeting someone like you.” “Of course, forgive me for my quick suspicion about you. I promise that it was done from the goodness of my heart.” Ava gave a slight gesture that couldn't be passed as a bow, but it could be seen as a sign of respect. “Ava, why don't you escort the couple to their newly made bedroom? I'm sure they must be exhausted from the long journey.” Howard said without glancing at Ava. His eyes were on me the whole time. Gross. He wasn't even trying to hide it, and it almost felt like he was silently challenging Corni for my hand. Only if he knew who I really was. He would probably be racing in the opposite direction, screaming bloody murder.“Alpha, I'm very grateful for your kind thoughts, but
CORNI'S POVI stared at Daciana as she blushed a thousand shades of red. I was expecting that question, to be honest. Being actual mates did include actually mating. “It all depends on you, little mate. Do you want us to have sex?” I asked, my voice going a notch lower, almost like a husky growl, because, in reality, I would love nothing more than to have her naked under me on my bed, but I didn't want to scare her away. Her eyes snapped up to mine, and she bit her lips like her life depended on it. Her cheeks were no longer red. They were hot…like fire hot. I placed my thumb on her chin and pulled at her lips. “Don't damage your lips so early in life. That opportunity should only be given to your mate.” I rubbed the pad of my thumb across the soft tissue, secretly hoping I could have a taste of it once more.“Why are you playing with me? Does it help you sleep at night?” She asked breathlessly.“How ironic when it's the one that actually keeps me awake.” I grinned, my canines flash
DACIANA'S POVMy body had a warm fire burning in it, an uncontrollable one. It was the first time I had experienced something like this, this heat, this unexplainable desire to have someone, to want him. I've never been in a relationship before, and my father always sang in my head that he would kill me if I ever gave myself to someone other than my mate. And look at me now, doing what he threatened against. Ding!Corni paused, my eyes flew open, and our lips were just inches away from each other. Corni pulled away and sighed. “The oven is calling me.” Our forehead was pressed against each other, and I was hoping he would forget the oven and continue what he was about to do. But then my stomach growled loudly, and I flushed. “We have to feed that little monster.” He pointed toward my stomach, placed his head into my neck, and moaned, “The wait is killing me.” He took a big whiff of my scent, his hands gripped my nails tightly, and just when I was about to dig my hands in his hai
CORNI'S POV“Corni,” I opened my eyes and stared at her. She looked worried. “Are you okay?” I just stared at her, at her clear, expressive eyes. She didn't look like she'd cried in her life. Her eyes were just too white. I felt her small human hands stroke my fur.“It's alright, everything will be fine. You don't need to say a word.” And she gave me that beautiful smile, and I almost thought my heart would jump out of my skin. She repositioned herself so that she could cuddle me better, all the while, my head was pressed against her chest, and I buried deeper into it, my eyes closing as her caress and the softness of her breasts led me to sleep. Before I woke up, my ears wiggled around, listening for things, but all I heard were nightwalkers announcing their presence. An owl was even hooting nearby. My eyes opened slightly, and even in the darkness, I could see. I looked around and realised that we'd fallen asleep outside. The fire from earlier had died out long ago, and no smoke was
CORNI'S POV“Enough to accept her as my mate. Why? Are you doubting her?” I raised my brows.“Of course not. I wouldn't dare do that. It's just…she gives off this aura of bad energy.” She smiled.“I'm sure it's just a misunderstanding. What about your Luna, Alpha? I haven't seen her since I got back. Is she okay?” I asked with false curiosity.I watched Howard and Beta Whitemane's faces turn red while Ava looked like she was about to cry.“What happened? Why the long faces?” “Moana is dead, Corni.” Howard replied, and I gasped. “Oh, my goodness. How did it happen?” “My daughter killed her sister.” George Whitemane growled, his fist clenched.“But why would she do that? I thought she left the pack to further her training. When did she get back?” I questioned.“A few months back. Turns out she's the Alpha's mate, but when she realized that he was with Moana, she couldn't bear the sight of it and thus poisoned her only sister.” Ava said, her voice thick with emotion.“Wow, I didn't th
CORNI'S POVI dropped the box on the chair with the bag that had her shoes before placing my hand on her back and stroking it. “What is it, baby? You can tell me.” “Where were you? I was so scared!” I could hear the desperation in her voice, and she sounded like she was about to cry. And that was when it hit me: this was the first time we'd been apart in months, so it must have taken a toll on her. “Were you scared that I left you? But for what reason? I still haven't had my revenge yet, and there's still your plan, which we have to do something about. I can never abandon you.” I said softly as she buried her face in my neck.“I know, but my stupid brain refuses to believe that, and different thoughts and images have been going through my mind. I was scared that today was the day they'd find out my identity. I didn't want to attend the bonfire feast without you.” I genuinely felt guilty for taking so long to get home, and I whispered promises upon promises to always be there for
