Everyone remained silent for the better part of thirty minutes, while we ate our food. Amidst the silence however, which hung like a cloud above us, I could almost see the wheels running around in the head of everyone. What we had on our hands was not a simple case that we could just walk out of. Everyone here knew the strength of Mason, and the terrible things he was capable of doing. Everyone also knew that they were either directly or indirectly in the line of fire, because as long as I was involved, all of us seated here right now were also involved.
We finished eating, cleared the table and then sat back down to discuss on our next move. After a little silence, I cleared my throat and started talking. I recounted the happenings of the evening from scratch, telling them how the peaceful evening had rapidly turned into a death sentence on me, and definitely, us.
As I talked, I kept on turning to Matt from time to time, for confirmation of whatever it was I was saying. Matt was absentmindedly mumbling his affirmations, while he was mostly concentrating on his device. After I'd finished recounting the details of the evening to them again, I stopped and allowed it to sink into their heads for the final time, then I began talking again. I apologised to them, telling them that I was very sorry for getting all of us into this kind of mess, and that it wasn't my intention at all to endanger the lives of my friends. To my apology, they all mumbled disapprovingly. Rosy spoke up first, telling me that she definitely did not see anything wrong with what I did, that what I had done was in fact, an enviable deed, because not everyone would have been able to take such a risk, just to save someone that they didn't know. Everyone else, echoed their approval to what Rosy said, and I was filled with a sense of belonging. My friends really had my back and for that, I was totally grateful. We hadn't heard anything from the girl that I saved till this point, so I turned to her, and asked for her name. It was very obvious that she was still scared. But then, this time, she wasn't afraid of death, as she was yesterday. she was rather scared because she barely knew any of us sitting here, and she had no way to know for sure, if we are actually after her well-being, or if we were going to complete what Mason had wanted to do yesterday. I didn't blame her at all, because here in Buckland, trust was one thing that was very rare. Friends here were very rare, and even your closest friend would sell your sorry ass for few wads of cash.
At this point, Matt had finished whatever it was he was doing on his tablet for the time being, and he gently patted her to make her understand that we were her friends. After patting her, he also chipped in a few words, telling her that we were not the enemy here, and that were also against Mason as much as she hated him. He also told her that she should feel free to tell us anything that will be of help to us, because whether she liked it or not, we all were in the line of fire and that the only way to get past this phase would be to work together as a team, in order to outsmart him, and that to do that, we needed every bit of information we could get.
After Matt had said this to her, she visibly calmed down. I turned to Matt, and winked knowingly at him, and the side of his lips curled up in a smile. I could tell that the calm the girl felt wasn't actually just from Matt's words. Matt was a vampire, and vampires had a way of soothing people's worries. They had the gift of reaching into people's emotions, and bending them in whatever way they wanted. A vampire could make you angry if they wanted to, without any cause. With just a little mind trick, they'd make you become angry for no reason at all. It was rumored a certain time, that a vampire made someone jump from a skyscraper to his death. Yes, this particular power was peculiar only to vampires, and was generally known as coercion. All vampires had the power to coerce almost every single person, into doing whatever it was they wanted them to do.
Right now, I could feel that Matt had used his coercion on her, and that was why she was succumbing so easily, and feeling at home so quickly. Well, I didn't blame Matt for this at all, because right now the last thing we needed was someone who would delay us in making our plans. Even though I had forbidden Matt from using his coercive powers on anyone of us, I wasn't prone to it for some reason. I stopped him from using it because of my other friends who didn't have the same immunity I had. The first time he had tried it on me, I did not notice any single thing, and I continued doing whatever it was I had set my mind to do. It was until beads of sweat filled his face that he had asked me if I didn't feel anything. Of course, I didn't feel anything, so I told him that I didn't feel a thing and that had left him very shocked. That was the end of his coercing me, and it was after that day that I got to learn about what coercion was all about.Back at the table, I prompted the girl some more to tell us about herself and tell us whatever she knew about Mason. I also asked her to tell us if they had had any previous altercations before today. The girl started by telling us that her name was Cheryl, and that she was an orphan. That struck a cord within me, and I immediately knew that I might have been attracted to her because we shared almost the same horrible background story. We both had had to fend for ourselves, without anyone to support. She continued to tell us how she had been in the streets for quite a while, saving up every scrap of money she had and that she had finally been able to start up a little business. When we asked her the kind of business she had started, she told us that she had started a barbecue sales joint, and that it was barely thriving, because the taxes she paid, took more than half of the profits she made, even though she still had to pay her bills. She also continued to tell us that when she was at the diamond court, she was filled with thoughts about how much she earned and how much she spent, and that when Mason had brought up the talk about the increase in tax, she just couldn't take it anymore and that she couldn't process the way her thoughts went wild, and that was why she attacked him in public.
We took some some time to digest all that she had said, and then I spoke up, telling her that she didn't do the wrong thing at all, and that I would have done the same if I was in her shoes. I also told her that since we had gotten involved in the fight, we were going to make sure we saw the end of it. I give her my words, that we wouldn't allow anything bad come to her, to which she visibly brightened up, and managed a smile.
After she had finished speaking, we went ahead to strategize, on how we were going to keep ourselves safe. We unanimously decided that we were going to increase the level of surveillance we had, and that we were going to be keeping closer watch on ourselves, because whether we liked it or not, on each of our heads was an invisible target, not just from Mason, but from anyone who would want to get money by giving out details of our whereabouts to him. What we needed right now, was to be extraordinarily careful. I was particularly scared for my friends who had no magical ability. They were definitely going to be the first targets, and I had already instructed that they become very careful. On second thoughts however, I asked them to come stay in my house. mine was a very big house, and I stayed virtually alone in it. I told them that if they didn't mind, they could come stay in my house and then we could live together, and go together to the store. Surprisingly, it didn't take much to convince them, maybe because we all knew the gravity of what we were into, and everyone wanted the best way to stay afloat. They didn't argue, before accepting to come stay in my house. They all accepted to come over the next day. At least, it would give me more opportunity to keep a closer watch on all of them at once, and be able to save them if need be. That being agreed on, we also started drafting out plans on how we were going to attack or defend ourselves when the time arose. I told them that none of them, especially those without magical powers, should go out without having at least one person with them, and that they should always be conscious of people that followed them and where they went. We also strategized on how we were going to defend ourselves, if Mason decided to attack. We were not going to let him get the upper hand, and we would definitely do our best to resist him as much as we could. After everything had been decided on, I asked if they would want to go back to their houses or if they would prefer to stay over at mine, but every one of them asides Cheryl opined that they would have to go home and come back the next day. I couldn't stop anyone of them, as I didn't make decisions for them, so I had no other option than to let them go. I only asked them to be very careful, and always watch their backs. They all promised also, to be back the next day, with some of their belongings, because they will be staying at my place for a while.
One by one, they all started leaving, until it was just myself, Matt and Cheryl left in the house. We sat in silence each one of us unsure of what the night, or subsequent days would bring. After sometime also, Matt said that it was time for him to go, and I bade him farewell, as I went back to restore the traps I'd set by the entrance to my house, to make sure that I wasn't attacked and killed in my sleep by some thug sent by Mason. I went back inside, had my shower again, and went to bed, but not before showing Cheryl to the guest room, and making her comfortable.
As I lay on the bed, my mind drifted off to several possibilities of what might result from today's altercation and concluded with the assertion that the worst thing that could happen was that we all would be killed. I also began to think, if I had made the right decision by asking them all to come over to my place. It would be easier that way to get to all of us at once. "Anyways", I thought to myself "all we had to do was to keep alive long enough to see the end of everything". I knew that Mason would not be able to come at me directly, and I made a mental note to become extra prepared to face whatever challenge he brought to me, even though it meant I might be required to expose my true identity.
A beast ran after me with very much ferocity. This beast looked really hideous and despite its size, could run very fast. I ran as fast as I could go, with everything I'd got, but I seemed to be getting weaker, and the beast seemed, on the other hand, to be getting stronger, and at the passing of each second, it got closer to me. It was just as though the beast was feeding off my strength, adding it to its own strength, and then getting stronger. I threw all caution to the winds, and employed the use of my air magic. I allowed myself glide through the air at terrific speed. When I looked back however, I saw that the beast was doing same. The beast was gliding through the air just as I was, with a speed almost double of mine, and at that point, I knew I might not be able to survive its attack, so I did the only thing that came to my mind. I stopped running immediately, and turned to face the beast. I had learnt from my stay in the streets that predators gets very scared when their pr
Buckland was always regarded to, as a hub of activity. Almost every other person worked really hard, in order to make a living, well, that's when we neglect the thugs and criminals, who had decided from the onset that they were not going to do anything to help themselves. They always used the little powers they had, to try to forcefully collect all that another had worked so much for. It always pained me, to see people work so hard for their daily bread, and then have another person come from nowhere, and tries to reap where they'd not sown. These set of people lived by feeding off other people's sweat, and it was one of them that I had myself, entangled so horribly with. Mason Smith, my nemesis. If I had my way, I'd definitely wipe them off the face of Buckland, because they did not deserve to live. Their actions never went down well with me, it always never did. Well, we still had good people in Buckland, and these set of good people were those who made up the most of my cus
We never expected what we saw this evening. Amongst all the things I had in mind that Mason could do to get back to us, I never had this particular one in mind. It came as a shock, not only to me, but also to Matt. Cheryl on the other hand, had not said a word since we left her store, or better still, her former business location. She was in deep shock right now, and if there was anything I had, it was a very strong feeling of hatred for Mason Mount. This time, he had actually gone way past his boundaries, and he'd actually done something I couldn't let go of just like that. when we got to Cheryl's barbecue joint, we discovered with shock, that there was nothing there anymore. I had turned to look at Cheryl countless times, to make sure we were at the right location, and any time I asked her, she gave me a positive answer. We were definitely in the right location, but then, there was nothing here, I thought to myself. The ground was levelled, as though nothing had been t
Locating this particular building wasn't quite difficult, since it was located just very close to the Highway. However, we had to park our vehicle few metres away from the actual site. We knew that people might be around and didn't want to risk getting recognized. I wanted to carry out my plans with as much secrecy as possible, and I wanted by all means to hold on to my element of surprise, because that was the only thing that would keep me safe for as long as I wanted his game to last, because once Mason had a very strong evidence that it was me, he would release everything he had to get me down once and for all, and I may not be able to stand it. We parked a few metres away, and trekked to the exact location. There, standing in magnificence and full glory, was one of Mason's largest business structures. It stood there, innocently looking at us as though it knew the fate that was coming it's way. I went around it, scanning for people around, but luckily, we had chosen the per
Hi readers, are you enjoying the story, and what are your thoughts about it? Annie is desperately trying to remain hidden, while still finding ways to make Mason suffer. Cheryl seems sweet and gentle, but what if she's faking it. Do you think all Annie's friends will remain loyal to her? What if some of them decide to turn around and sabotage her. That'd be a nice twist wouldn't it? Let's keep our fingers crossed as we wait for it to unfold 🤩 I'll be updating as frequently as I can, but will love to hear from you. Thanks for reading along with me. Xoxo 🌹
Even after visiting the ruins of Mason's edifice, we still came back to the store in record time, because the highways were still almost empty. We were able to start our business for the day at our normal time, 8 a.m.When we returned, all my workers were already in the store. Almost everything had been set in place, except for the vegetables, because I had told them that no one else should tamper with the vegetables. Right now, the only person that helped me with chopping the vegetables was Cheryl, and we had been together since morning. We went to work immediately, chopping the vegetables with speed and dexterity. Something happened though. When we were almost done, Cheryl mistakenly cut herself with the knife she was holding, and blood flowed from the wound. I quickly grabbed her hand, and channeled my air magic into the wound, using it to stitch up the tissues that had been cut, and closing up the skin from the inside. Few seconds later, I was done. Inside the compound, the first thing that captured my attention was a figure huddled up on the ground. My heart skipped some beats because of the amount of blood I saw both on the floor and on the huddled figure's body. It was most definitely a guy, and he was putting on a light-colored dress, therefore it was very easy to detect the blood that all but covered his clothes. My first instinct as I saw Cheryl bent over the figure on the ground, was that part of the blood belonged to her, but on closer watch however as I approached, I found out that Cheryl was okay. From her movements, the blood was definitely from the man lying down on the ground. I increased my steps with hopes of finding a way to resuscitate the victim on the ground. my first thoughts were that Cheryl somehow, had been able to defeat one of the men Mason had sent to kill her because I didn't think there would be any other explanation to what I was seeing here. I had half of my attention on the road and the other half, on Matt. He had the looks of one in pure anguish, as he looked at the damaged phone in his hand and I somehow felt pity for him. Maybe I had overreacted. I still wasn't cool anyways, with the fact that he had to let Cheryl go inside all by herself. I turned to him, after making sure we were not about to smash into a parked truck anytime soon, and said, "I still don't see the reason why you had to leave Cheryl to go inside there by herself. You of all people should know that we are in difficult times, and the least you could have done was to actually be mindful of the dangers you would encounter in whatever you do and wherever you go. I never expected you to be so careless Matt."I was very sure that at that point, I would have sounded like an angry parent. I had not even thought to collect and go through her phone, even though that was always the first thing I did whenever I caught any person trying to kill me. I had made it a point of duty to always check their phones, to see if I could find valuable information about the person who might sent him or her, and perhaps, get hold anything about them that I could use to track them down. I watched carefully as she brought out the phone, and saw her expression shift almost simultaneously into that of absolute shock when she looked at her phone's screen. She literally froze in terror, and at that point I didn't need any more clues to make me know exactly who was at the other end of the call, Mason fucking Smith. She wasn't lying after all. “Answer the call!” I commanded her, and as a quick afterthought, added, "and act like you have already captured me!" Immediately she heard that, she looked at me fearfully and began shaking all over. When she saw that I was serious, she made to hit the a
What I was expecting was some sort of defiance. I half expected her to try to struggle when I lifted up her head to look at me, but then, instead of the fire that was burning just few moments ago in her eyes, what I saw this time around took me entirely by surprise. She wasn't looking like someone who was ready to fight. In fact, all the fight had totally drained from her and her shoulders drooped as that of someone who had already accepted defeat. The most shocking part was that she looked at me with tears in her eyes, a pleading note in her gaze. I was taken aback for some time and I reflexively took few steps back, while trying to understand exactly was playing out. Was it one of her to tricks? Act beaten to get me to sympathize with her so that she could finally finish what she had started before now. I wasn't trusting her in any way because she had already shown to be more dangerous than she looked, and I wasn't ready to take any chances. The most important thing on my mind righ
I was pretty sure of the fact that I didn't sense any other presence here, except of course, for that of the gang members who were mostly dead, and only gave off faint emotions of the evil intents they had, and the shock they felt before they died. It was therefore, very shocking and surprising, that Cheryl had mysteriously disappeared. What had happened to her?Had she been captured, as a bait to lure me?Were there other people I didn't notice? Did she run away? These questions boggled my mind and at that moment I just couldn't concentrate. "Take care of her", I said to Matt, pointing at mystery woman who was still writhing in pains. Her broken hands definitely did enough damage to her, than I was able to, throughout the duration of our fight, damages that made her forget about mirroring my moves for the time being. "Do you understand?", I asked Matt, my jaws set in a thin line, silently conveying to him, the fact that I wanted nothing, absolutely nothing, to go wrong this t
The last time I fought with a real opponent was very long ago, and I flexed my fingers, unable to quell the sudden surge of exciting exhilaration that flowed through my veins, at the singular thought of meeting and fighting once again with someone who was worth the time. It had always been people who were amateurs and unable to hold a decent fight, and every single time, at the end of the day it took me very little time before finishing them off. However, this particular lady standing in front of me right now, didn't look like an amateur at all. If it was anything to go by, the way she sidestepped my deadly attack seconds ago, as though it were child's play, told me all I needed to know and I looked forward to having a spectacular fight with her and of course defeating her as usual. I turned towards Matt again in a silent command, to remind him of my wish for him to stand down. I was very intentional about this particular fight, and I wouldn't like him to interfere. I had plans actua
