The way everyone became very intentional about the attacks they launched on Mason, one would think that it had been planned. But no, it hadn't. It was just a situation where every other person was tired of an autocratic Rule and had decided to take matters into their hands, and bring down the one person who was in charge of the autocracy. I still sat where I was in the heat of the fight and when I looked at mason, he concentrated as though he was trying to do something that needed much concentration.
I anticipated his next move, and I saw him casting his gaze straight at the lady who had launched the first attack, even though his white clothes was now stained completely crimson. Mason still stood, unmoving however, in the middle of the whole fight, without batting as much an eyelid, still very much concentrated on what he was doing. I wasn't surprised. I knew that the attacks that were being launched at him, did little or nothing to harm him. Mason was a giant, and giants always had very tough skinsIt would definitely take more than a few throws of daggers and ice spears, to bring him down. One would need a one-on-one close combat with him, to actually give it to him where it would hurt.I correctly anticipated Mason's next move, as he released a massive wave of air which tore through the crowd like a tornado, flinging every other person in several directions. I would have been flung too, if I didn't have air magic. Anyways, I still had to make it look like I was affected by his power, so I intentionally let myself to be flung a few feet before allowing myself land gracefully to the ground. in a moment, Matt was beside me, and carefully studied me to see if I had sustained any injury. I gave him a sharp nod of the head, telling him that I was fine, and that I did not sustain any. He quietly stood beside me in support, as everybody were standing up to their feet again, albeit fully calmed and scared of what would come their way next.
However, my gaze was drawn to the lady that stood solitary at the end of all the fight. She was the one who had initiated the first blow to Mason, but Mason had somehow turned the table around so quickly, that she'd turned into the prey. Mason had attacked in such a way that she was left standing, maybe he had restricted his air from getting back to where she was. I sensed the usage of powerful magic, and turned around the court till I saw it. I saw a deep red, burning in Mason's eyes. I without being told, what he was about to do. He was calling up on his most potent element, Fire. If his air could be that disastrous, I wondered how his fire was going to be, and suddenly pitied anyone in the line of fire. I looked at where the lady was, and looked at the door, and almost immediately, an idea formed in my head.
Mason could not be allowed to kill this lady, because we needed people like her who would one day be able to take down this particular regime. Her boldness alone, to stand up to him made me feel like she would definitely be a good recruit. Furthermore, if Mason was allowed to kill her, it would give him much more power and authority to do whatever it was he wanted to do, because everyone will be much more afraid than they were now. They would slowly begin to believe that he was invincible, and that they could never have any effect on him. This had happened several times before now, as this was not the first time an attack was launched at him. On each and every occasion however, he was able to not only resist the attack, but to make a public show of roasting whoever or as many people as were involved in the attack on him. Yes, he always roasted them right in front of an eager crowd. He used his fire magic to burn them inside out, till all that would be left of them would be charred remains. However, that wouldn't be the situation here today. As far as I was concerned, I was going to save that lady, even though I did not know her, because looking at her alone brought back memories of me on the streets. Before I had come to the level I was in now, I had been like her, struggling to survive. I totally believed that the major reason why she lost it, and had attacked Mason, was because the additional tax would definitely take its toll on her business. It would make her struggle even more, and could possibly make her business go down the drains.
When I looked at her, I didn't see someone that was filled with hatred. I rather saw someone who was filled with apprehension, someone who was filled with worry, someone that had put so much efforts into building whatever little thing she had, and knew that her efforts, all of it, was about to go down the drains, but could do virtually nothing about it. Her attack seemed to me, like a last resort, and now, I couldn't just stand here and let her be killed over a show of dominance, not when I could stop it.
I thought of the options I had in saving her, but nothing came to my mind. At this point, everyone cowered in fear, as Mason was virtually bristling with the amount of energy he was trying to pull up. I looked again at the young lady and saw the look in her eyes. The look in her eyes made me almost cry, because it wasn't that of fear again. The look in her eyes was pure resignation. She knew now, that there was no one to stand by her. People were only willing to stand by her when it looked as though she had the upper hand. I wasn't surprised, because that was exactly how things were done here in Buckland. People's loyalty were always with those who had something to offer, not the other way round, and it really pained me that it would end this way for her.Well, it wouldn't, because I wasn't going to let it happen. She stood there with resignation. She had simply tried, failed, and had resigned whatever painful destruction that would come her way. At this point, she knew there was nothing, virtually nothing she could do to save herself. No one will stand in to help her, and if she tried to attack again it will only further enrage Mason. Her attack has really dealt a great blow on him and his reputation. For quite a very long while, no one had dared to attack him, especially in public, and with the knowledge that he had finally gotten her under control, The Mason I knew would not only kill her, but make hers a slow and painful death, if only to pass a message to every other person. I weighed my options of going there and trying to get her out, but I knew I couldn't do it, not without help, because it will not only put me in line of fire as I wouldn't be quick enough, it would also make me become forced to use my elemental powers here in the open, which would spell a great doom for not just me, but for all of my friends.
An idea quickly popped into my head. Looking at Mason, he had just few seconds left for him to explode. The main door was still open, so this was just my last chance. I look sideways at Matt, because I needed his help now. Matt was a vampire, and one thing about vampires was their strength and agility. Matt could take us out of here in milliseconds if need be, and that need had just arisen. We needed to save that young girl, and still get out of here. I told Matt my plan immediately in a very few words, and he understood. He quickly held me very close, lifting me off the ground, and before anybody could discover what had happened, we were already at the girls side. Her eyes opened wide in shock as she saw us, but before anyone could as much as react, Matt had grabbed her also, and we were out of the door, in time too, as Mason's inferno chose that exact same time to erupt.
I quickly got into the car, as did Matt and the girl, and in no time, we were tearing out of the driveway as though we were never l there in the first place. Mason's outburst was really massive, as it shook the earth beneath us. I was very sure he released the energy he had been gathering up with a fair dose of anger. Anger that his prey was taken away from his very eyes, and if I knew Mason very well, he would make it a point of duty to kill me, all I cared for, and make sure he got back to that lady. I looked at her from the rearview mirror, and saw that her face was still white with shock of what had just happened.
At the moment, I knew that whatever came my way, I did the right thing. I couldn't possibly stand to watch her die. An innocent girl wasn't expected to die in such a gruesome manner as Mason had planned, and it would be definitely better for me to face the full wrath of Mason, and the torture I surely going to receive from him, than to go through a life long nightmare of the charred remains of this innocent girl. Without doubts, I knew that I had done the right thing. I looked at Matt also, and he nodded at me in affirmation. He thought also, that I had done the right thing. All I needed to do right now was to prepare for war, because I had just declared myself an open enemy of the kingship of Buckland, and the king was a savage king who would go to any extent to make sure that all his subjects remained completely under his control. Right now, I was one subject had totally gone rogue, and my king was definitely going to do everything possible, to bring me back under control. Everything possible with Mason, would simply mean killing off the rogue subject.
On a second thought, I decided to head home directly. I called the store and asked them to dismiss all customers and lock up for the day. I also asked them to come over to my place first, for a briefing, before going back home. I needed to get them all on high alert, as Mason wouldn't only be targeting me, but also everyone I cared for. After the call, I changed directions and took the next available route to my residence. All the while I drove, I kept on thinking about what I'd gotten myself into. I took turns, looking at the road and looking at the young lady I was carrying. At this time however, some colour had returned to her face and the ghostly white had reduced to an extent. I knew better though, than to start talking to her or asking her questions now. I needed to get her settled in first, before any questions. In no time, I was driving up to my gate, and going into my house, but not without checking if the traps I'd set were still in place before disabling them, and entering into my house. I drove into the parking lot, and the three of us went into the house. I quickly went up to my bedroom to have my bath and change into something simpler, while I told Matt to help fix our visitor a warm bath, and give her some of my clothes. I soon finished taking my bath and quickly went to the kitchen to fix a quick meal, because I had the whole of my employees coming over, and there was no better way to draft up proper plans and strategies than over a home cooked meal.
Few minutes later, they were here and we are sitting around the dining table. The new girl was with us also, and at this point she had gotten loads better. she could actually manage a smile and she could eat. I did not waste any time to start telling them about what had transpired at the diamond court today, and how we had only managed to escape Mason's wrath with the help of Matt. I turned to Matt in acknowledgement, only to find him typing furiously on his tablet. He quickly raised his head as though he noticed my gaze, and smiled, while telling me that the news was everywhere, and that Mason had set a whole lot of money as reward for whoever would give him information on where to get either me, the girl, or both of us.
Everyone remained silent for the better part of thirty minutes, while we ate our food. Amidst the silence however, which hung like a cloud above us, I could almost see the wheels running around in the head of everyone. What we had on our hands was not a simple case that we could just walk out of. Everyone here knew the strength of Mason, and the terrible things he was capable of doing. Everyone also knew that they were either directly or indirectly in the line of fire, because as long as I was involved, all of us seated here right now were also involved. We finished eating, cleared the table and then sat back down to discuss on our next move. After a little silence, I cleared my throat and started talking. I recounted the happenings of the evening from scratch, telling them how the peaceful evening had rapidly turned into a death sentence on me, and definitely, us.As I talked, I kept on turning to Matt from time to time, for confirmation of whatever it was I
A beast ran after me with very much ferocity. This beast looked really hideous and despite its size, could run very fast. I ran as fast as I could go, with everything I'd got, but I seemed to be getting weaker, and the beast seemed, on the other hand, to be getting stronger, and at the passing of each second, it got closer to me. It was just as though the beast was feeding off my strength, adding it to its own strength, and then getting stronger. I threw all caution to the winds, and employed the use of my air magic. I allowed myself glide through the air at terrific speed. When I looked back however, I saw that the beast was doing same. The beast was gliding through the air just as I was, with a speed almost double of mine, and at that point, I knew I might not be able to survive its attack, so I did the only thing that came to my mind. I stopped running immediately, and turned to face the beast. I had learnt from my stay in the streets that predators gets very scared when their pr
Buckland was always regarded to, as a hub of activity. Almost every other person worked really hard, in order to make a living, well, that's when we neglect the thugs and criminals, who had decided from the onset that they were not going to do anything to help themselves. They always used the little powers they had, to try to forcefully collect all that another had worked so much for. It always pained me, to see people work so hard for their daily bread, and then have another person come from nowhere, and tries to reap where they'd not sown. These set of people lived by feeding off other people's sweat, and it was one of them that I had myself, entangled so horribly with. Mason Smith, my nemesis. If I had my way, I'd definitely wipe them off the face of Buckland, because they did not deserve to live. Their actions never went down well with me, it always never did. Well, we still had good people in Buckland, and these set of good people were those who made up the most of my cus
We never expected what we saw this evening. Amongst all the things I had in mind that Mason could do to get back to us, I never had this particular one in mind. It came as a shock, not only to me, but also to Matt. Cheryl on the other hand, had not said a word since we left her store, or better still, her former business location. She was in deep shock right now, and if there was anything I had, it was a very strong feeling of hatred for Mason Mount. This time, he had actually gone way past his boundaries, and he'd actually done something I couldn't let go of just like that. when we got to Cheryl's barbecue joint, we discovered with shock, that there was nothing there anymore. I had turned to look at Cheryl countless times, to make sure we were at the right location, and any time I asked her, she gave me a positive answer. We were definitely in the right location, but then, there was nothing here, I thought to myself. The ground was levelled, as though nothing had been t
Locating this particular building wasn't quite difficult, since it was located just very close to the Highway. However, we had to park our vehicle few metres away from the actual site. We knew that people might be around and didn't want to risk getting recognized. I wanted to carry out my plans with as much secrecy as possible, and I wanted by all means to hold on to my element of surprise, because that was the only thing that would keep me safe for as long as I wanted his game to last, because once Mason had a very strong evidence that it was me, he would release everything he had to get me down once and for all, and I may not be able to stand it. We parked a few metres away, and trekked to the exact location. There, standing in magnificence and full glory, was one of Mason's largest business structures. It stood there, innocently looking at us as though it knew the fate that was coming it's way. I went around it, scanning for people around, but luckily, we had chosen the per
Hi readers, are you enjoying the story, and what are your thoughts about it? Annie is desperately trying to remain hidden, while still finding ways to make Mason suffer. Cheryl seems sweet and gentle, but what if she's faking it. Do you think all Annie's friends will remain loyal to her? What if some of them decide to turn around and sabotage her. That'd be a nice twist wouldn't it? Let's keep our fingers crossed as we wait for it to unfold 🤩 I'll be updating as frequently as I can, but will love to hear from you. Even after visiting the ruins of Mason's edifice, we still came back to the store in record time, because the highways were still almost empty. We were able to start our business for the day at our normal time, 8 a.m.When we returned, all my workers were already in the store. Almost everything had been set in place, except for the vegetables, because I had told them that no one else should tamper with the vegetables. Right now, the only person that helped me with chopping the vegetables was Cheryl, and we had been together since morning. We went to work immediately, chopping the vegetables with speed and dexterity. Something happened though. When we were almost done, Cheryl mistakenly cut herself with the knife she was holding, and blood flowed from the wound. I quickly grabbed her hand, and channeled my air magic into the wound, using it to stitch up the tissues that had been cut, and closing up the skin from the inside. Few seconds later, I was done. Inside the compound, the first thing that captured my attention was a figure huddled up on the ground. My heart skipped some beats because of the amount of blood I saw both on the floor and on the huddled figure's body. It was most definitely a guy, and he was putting on a light-colored dress, therefore it was very easy to detect the blood that all but covered his clothes. My first instinct as I saw Cheryl bent over the figure on the ground, was that part of the blood belonged to her, but on closer watch however as I approached, I found out that Cheryl was okay. From her movements, the blood was definitely from the man lying down on the ground. I increased my steps with hopes of finding a way to resuscitate the victim on the ground. my first thoughts were that Cheryl somehow, had been able to defeat one of the men Mason had sent to kill her because I didn't think there would be any other explanation to what I was seeing here. I had not even thought to collect and go through her phone, even though that was always the first thing I did whenever I caught any person trying to kill me. I had made it a point of duty to always check their phones, to see if I could find valuable information about the person who might sent him or her, and perhaps, get hold anything about them that I could use to track them down. I watched carefully as she brought out the phone, and saw her expression shift almost simultaneously into that of absolute shock when she looked at her phone's screen. She literally froze in terror, and at that point I didn't need any more clues to make me know exactly who was at the other end of the call, Mason fucking Smith. She wasn't lying after all. “Answer the call!” I commanded her, and as a quick afterthought, added, "and act like you have already captured me!" Immediately she heard that, she looked at me fearfully and began shaking all over. When she saw that I was serious, she made to hit the a
What I was expecting was some sort of defiance. I half expected her to try to struggle when I lifted up her head to look at me, but then, instead of the fire that was burning just few moments ago in her eyes, what I saw this time around took me entirely by surprise. She wasn't looking like someone who was ready to fight. In fact, all the fight had totally drained from her and her shoulders drooped as that of someone who had already accepted defeat. The most shocking part was that she looked at me with tears in her eyes, a pleading note in her gaze. I was taken aback for some time and I reflexively took few steps back, while trying to understand exactly was playing out. Was it one of her to tricks? Act beaten to get me to sympathize with her so that she could finally finish what she had started before now. I wasn't trusting her in any way because she had already shown to be more dangerous than she looked, and I wasn't ready to take any chances. The most important thing on my mind righ
I was pretty sure of the fact that I didn't sense any other presence here, except of course, for that of the gang members who were mostly dead, and only gave off faint emotions of the evil intents they had, and the shock they felt before they died. It was therefore, very shocking and surprising, that Cheryl had mysteriously disappeared. What had happened to her?Had she been captured, as a bait to lure me?Were there other people I didn't notice? Did she run away? These questions boggled my mind and at that moment I just couldn't concentrate. "Take care of her", I said to Matt, pointing at mystery woman who was still writhing in pains. Her broken hands definitely did enough damage to her, than I was able to, throughout the duration of our fight, damages that made her forget about mirroring my moves for the time being. "Do you understand?", I asked Matt, my jaws set in a thin line, silently conveying to him, the fact that I wanted nothing, absolutely nothing, to go wrong this t
The last time I fought with a real opponent was very long ago, and I flexed my fingers, unable to quell the sudden surge of exciting exhilaration that flowed through my veins, at the singular thought of meeting and fighting once again with someone who was worth the time. It had always been people who were amateurs and unable to hold a decent fight, and every single time, at the end of the day it took me very little time before finishing them off. However, this particular lady standing in front of me right now, didn't look like an amateur at all. If it was anything to go by, the way she sidestepped my deadly attack seconds ago, as though it were child's play, told me all I needed to know and I looked forward to having a spectacular fight with her and of course defeating her as usual. I turned towards Matt again in a silent command, to remind him of my wish for him to stand down. I was very intentional about this particular fight, and I wouldn't like him to interfere. I had plans actua
I had half of my attention on the road and the other half, on Matt. He had the looks of one in pure anguish, as he looked at the damaged phone in his hand and I somehow felt pity for him. Maybe I had overreacted. I still wasn't cool anyways, with the fact that he had to let Cheryl go inside all by herself. I turned to him, after making sure we were not about to smash into a parked truck anytime soon, and said, "I still don't see the reason why you had to leave Cheryl to go inside there by herself. You of all people should know that we are in difficult times, and the least you could have done was to actually be mindful of the dangers you would encounter in whatever you do and wherever you go. I never expected you to be so careless Matt."I was very sure that at that point, I would have sounded like an angry parent. "I'm sorry", he replied, his voice full of pain, and I knew fully well that he regretted every of his actions but then I needed him to see the extent of damage he had cau
