Gwendolyn’s POV
Everyone thinks getting married to a rich man, not thinking about how to pay bills and all that would make one happy. It might be for them, but not me.
And also, everyone thinks getting married to their heartthrob would be a blissful feeling. Well, it was for me for the first year of my marriage to my sweetheart, but the year after was hel for me.
Here I am, five years later married to my sweetheart but still gets cheated on even after all his promises. I thought my life would be colorful as long as I was married to Henry, my first love and everything, but who was I kidding? My life has been hel after our first year of marriage, and I still decided to stay with him. Stay by his side to see if he was going to change his ways, it was old news to me that he was cheating and the media made it known every day. He always liked to twist his words, telling me that the women were his business partners and nothing was going on between them.
I used to believe that lie, believe that they were just his business partners and not his flings, but now I do not. Henry has made it a constant thing to come home late every day. It got worse when our daughter was born, I don’t see my husband face to face apart from the news and the constant media stalking.
I got fed up but I had to stay because of my beautiful daughter. She’s the sole reason why I was still here and also because I have nowhere else to go.
So, here I am checking the time every danm minute to see if my ‘dearest hubby’ would come home. It was almost midnight and Henry wasn’t back from his work. I knew he was bluffing when he promised his daughter that he was going to be here for her 4th birthday, yet he was nowhere to be seen.
He promised Jasmine, his daughter, that he would return home before 5 pm so he could take her out and let her enjoy her day. My heart broke as I watched my little daughter waiting patiently for her father as the hours ticked until she couldn’t wait for him anymore.
I watched with a broken heart as my daughter spoke lowly to herself about how her daddy didn’t love her. I was too heartbroken to correct her, as little as she was, she knew her daddy didn’t come home on time, and she was already used to it. But today was her birthday, she had high hopes of seeing her father home early because he promised to celebrate with us this year. Henry wasn’t a husband or father material in fact, he started running from his responsibilities when Jasmine was born.
He always nagged that she was always crying, and I always smelled of brea-st milk like it was our fault.
I sighed and went to check up on her again, I opened her door slowly and smiled when I saw her sleeping comfortably on her little bed. I hoped she would forget about this by tomorrow.
I came back downstairs and checked the clock again, past 12, and he still wasn’t back. I couldn’t wait any longer, so I took my phone and placed a call to him.
His line went through, but he didn’t take his call, I tried again and again before he finally picked up the call.
“Hello.” My brows furrowed. The first thing I noticed was his heavy breathing like he was in the middle of an intense workout. I sighed and rubbed my face, only god knows where he is right now.
“Henry, where are you?” I asked.
“I’m…uh…” he went silent after that and the heavy breathing continued. My heart hurt when I heard that, but I didn’t show any reaction that I knew what was going on, that even a danm call couldn’t hide something like that from you.
“You know what, Henry, you are a big as-shole! Your daughter has been waiting for you all day! All she ever wanted for her birthday was a cake and us by her side as she celebrates this new year, and you can’t even give that to her as her father.” I yelled at him, frustrated already with his acts. He was hurting my daughter with his act, and that’s something I can’t take.
“Why do you always nag all the time, Gwen? I gave you my card this morning because of something like this, you can get her something online or even take her out for her day.” He retorted. “You can get whatever she wants and there’s no need to consider the price, Gwen, she’s my daughter and can afford anything she likes.”
All this while my mouth was wide open and my hand was clenched by my side, he didn’t just say that. He thought giving his daughter expensive things would be able to make up for the time that he wasn’t here.
“Do you think giving Jasmine an expensive gift will make up for your presence?” I asked, breathing in sharply so I wouldn’t snap at him. As it is, I am angry and any more rubbish from him, I think I’m going to blow up.
“Oh shut up Gwen and do as you’re told!” He yelled and I became speechless.
“You do not….” I kept my mouth shut when I heard giggling from the phone. Was he with someone?
As if the person knew what I was thinking about, I heard her voice. He was with a woman on his daughter’s birthday!
“Who’s that babe?” The voice asked, and I froze. The hand holding the phone almost let the object down, but I held it more tightly.
It was her.
He was with her. Why didn’t I think of this? Of course, he would be with his lover by this time.
“No one important, get back to what you were doing.” My so-called husband said, and I gritted my teeth.
I heard a kissing sound before hearing her moaning his name and then his heavy breaths. I knew I should just end the call, and not listen to what they were doing, but my body couldn’t move due to the shock.
“I guess your wife likes listening to us having se-x, huh?” The voice taunted at the other side and a giggle followed.
My face burns red in shame, I guess she was right. After all, I was busy listening to them doing whatever they were doing without having the common sense of hanging up.
“I’ve told you what you can do, Gwen, get something good for my daughter and make sure that it is expensive.”
Beep. Beep.
The call was disconnected and I remained frozen where I was standing. My body trembled, and I slowly dropped the phone down before I threw it against the wall.
I slid down slowly next to the couch with my hands in my hair, I let the tears flow out, but they came out silently. I would rather not wake up Jasmine with my cry and let her know what was going on. She wasn’t supposed to know what was going on between me and her father. I didn’t want her to know about it but the more I tried to hide it the more the drifts became wider, and my heart hurt more. It felt like someone was plunging a knife into my heart over and over again.
This couldn’t go on for long, and I knew even when I wanted to make things work that it wouldn’t work.
I stayed there crying for some time and decided to have a glass or two of wine.
Gwendolyn. I know alcohol wasn’t going to help me, but I still opted for it. It gives me a temporary relief from my heartache and the pain of knowing Henry was cheating.I opened the wine and poured a large amount on the glass then gulped it down, letting out a sigh of relief. Normally, I only have a glass after Henry’s drama but soon when the pain became too much I turned it to two and then three, and it went on and on.While sitting there I started thinking about my life, and if there was one thing I can totally agree of that will be this. This wasn’t the life I envisioned with Henry after getting married; me getting almost drunk every time we had a quarrel and he, cheating on me with his lover. I didn’t plan my life this way, when I ran away from home to be with him, this wasn’t what I was expecting.I had dreamt of a bright and happy future where Henry and I were happily married with three children, living in a quiet and peaceful neighborhood with either a cat or a dog. But this,
Henry's POV. I stepped out of my car with my head banging and the harsh sun shining on my face was doing me no favors. Last night was a blast, and I’m not sure if I have had that much happiness since I got married five years ago.My lover, just as my wife calls her, was truly my first love. She was Gwen’s best friend back in high school, and immediately I saw her, I knew she was the one meant for me. Emily would always be the one for me, and no matter how much Gwen tries to make our marriage work, there’s nothing that’s going to work. Everything was just a scam right from the onset.I walked into the house with a happy grin on my face, reminiscing last night. The lovely dinner Emily and the wee hours of this morning.I walked to the living room and noticed that the usual amazing smell of Gwen’s cooking was missing, the TV was on, and my little daughter was sitting idly on the couch watching cartoons.Jasmine was the only reason I decided to marry Gwen. She got the baby for me and my
Henry. I walked into the room after contemplating on what to say to her, my steps halted when I saw the miserable position she was in.She was my wife, after all, so I really get the pleasure of seeing something as delicate as her suffer?Yes.That was the answer to my question, Gwen deserves everything happening to her and maybe even more. If she hasn’t been such a cunning biitch who only wanted me to herself, then she wouldn’t be in this position today. She wouldn’t be here sitting with her hand on her head and crying softly if she didn’t make that drastic decision years back. And I wouldn’t be here trying to haul more insult at her for trying to be herself.“You walked out on me, Gwen?” I asked. My hands were clenched by my side.Slowly, she raised her head up and stare at me with tears in her eyes. Trust Gwen never to hold a grudge, regardless of what you’ve done to her, she wouldn’t hold it against you. Instead, she’ll be looking at you like she was a god who doesn’t sin and tha
Gwen. In no time, we were out from the house, and I can confidently say that this was the first quality family time we have had in years. Henry rarely has time for us, he was either occupied with his mistress or engrossed in his company affairs. My heart swelled with joy upon seeing the gleaming expression on Jasmine's face; one glance was enough to tell her exhilaration for this outing. Witnessing my daughter radiate happiness like this was my ultimate goal; she was my greatest source of pride, after all. The drive seemed to be longer than I anticipated, and I couldn't help but wonder where Henry was taking us. Despite my polite inquiries, he refused to say anything to me, he was too preoccupied with making calls and barking orders at whoever was on the receiving end. At one point, I chose to remain silent and enjoy this rare opportunity to spend time with Henry… peacefully. Jasmine was beyond thrilled and couldn't stop talking; she bombarded us with questions every time we passed
Standing there with a shattered heart, I observed the pair in front of me. My thoughts wandered, wondering why Henry would bring us to this place when he knew his lover would be here. Why did he even take the time to be with us when he knew he couldn't be fully present?I tried to calm my racing heart and consider my options: should I go back inside to meet jasmine, or approach the two of them? After much contemplation, I decided to confront them. As I approached, it became clear that they were engaged in a heated argument. Henry's body was tense and alert, while the woman was the one doing all the talking."What's happening here?" I inquired, focusing my gaze on Henry and pretending not to see the lady next to him."Perfect! It's great that she's here, Henry. Why don't we fill her in on what's going on?" She sneered.I turned to Henry, but he refused to even acknowledge my presence. "Henry, why are you here? Jasmine has been looking for you," I said, trying to brush off the woman's c
Gwen.Throughout the car ride home, Henry remained silent, completely disregarding my presence. But I paid no mind to it; I knew it had become his preferred course of action. We arrived home just before dinner, and I carried the sleeping Jasmine out of the car. I turned to Henry, who had not bothered to come out."Are you not coming in?" I inquired. Sometimes I wondered why I even bothered with him, but he was my husband after all."No," he replied before turning the car around and driving off.I stood there, watching the car leave our home, for a long time. I only went inside when Jasmine stirred in my arms. I first went to her room and laid her down on her bed. I removed her dress and tossed it in the laundry basket. Then, I grabbed a damp towel and wiped her body, knowing she wouldn't sleep comfortably with a sweaty body. After that, I dressed her in a light nightgown and left the room once I was certain she was comfortable.Thankfully, Sheila was not around. It was a double stroke
Gwen's life flashed before her eyes as the word “divorce” echoed in her mind. She couldn't believe it. Henry was divorcing her - no, he had already divorced her. All that was left was for her to sign the papers, and that thought terrified her. Struggling to control her breathing, Gwen looked at Henry. He was staring at her like he was looking at something other than a person. “What do you mean, Henry?” She asked, still unsure of what she heard. “Don't tell me your ears are broken as well?” He sneered. But Gwen didn't have time for his taunts. If he wanted to mock her, he could do it later. Right now, the situation was far more serious than he could imagine. How dare he think he could divorce her whenever he pleased? When they signed the marriage certificate and exchanged vows, he promised to be with her until death did them part. So why was he suddenly bringing divorce papers to her?“I still don't understand what you're trying to say, Henry,” I said, picking up the papers from th
Gwen. I was right when I said that Emily was nothing but a slut, and she will continue being one. Henry knew it was true, but he wouldn't admit it. I mean, who would? Who would sit quietly and let someone insult the person they're in love with? As much as he tried to deny it, I was right. We became silent for a moment, both of us looking at each other straight in the eyes. Neither of us spoke, but with the tension and quietness around us, one would think we were preparing for war. He looked away and pulled back, his eyes staring at me as his nose scrunched up in disgust. “You'll sign those papers, and I swear you'll do it today.” I scoffed. So this was his way of avoiding the subject. But guess what? I wasn't done. “Do not try to avoid the subject here, Henry. We both know that she's the cause of whatever rift we have between us. She is the reason your daughter had to spend countless nights waiting up for you. She's the reason you abandoned your family and left us to stay in th

Epilogue. Henry. A little body jumped onto the king-size bed, waving the mattress and waking me up from the deep sleep that I had been engulfed in. The fucking hell. I need no one to tell me who it was. I snapped out of my sleep just as Gwen burrowed further beneath the comforter in her deep sleep. I tried to hold her before Nate jumped on the bed but yet again I was late. Jesus! He always do this every morning and I'm tired ot correcting him everytime. “Nate,” I called. “Papa, wake up, wake up,” Nathaniel sang jubilantly and then crawled towards me while dressed in his SpongeBob pajamas. It's his favorite pajamas. “It’s Saturday which means cake time, mommy. Wake up,” he said again but unknown to him, Gwen was too deep in his sleep to notice anyone. Crazy pregnancy brain. I swear. She wouldn't hear a thing. Also unknown to Nathaniel, he failed to notice the giant lumps of his twin under the comforter wrapped around Gwen’s body. I sighed when I caught the s
Gwen.I couldn’t believe what was happening, one time I was angry at Henry for driving me out of the room and the next I was walking down the hallway then stopped all of a sudden because of a huge pain that hit me.And then something wet ran down my thighs, I couldn’t believe I’d just peed on myself. But after another wave of painful contractions hit me again, I knew this wasn’t about me peeing on myself, my water just broke. And let’s not talk about how Henry suddenly froze after I told him about it, I mean the man wasn’t moving at all. He was just staring at me like I’d just turned into a big alien all of a sudden.“Henry!” I called harshly, squeezing his hand tightly to pull him from wherever his head was at but that didn’t work.I groaned when the contraction hit me again. Calm down Gwen, you have gone through this before.Breathe in and out, breathe in and out.Yes, that’s it, you are doing fine……Argh.“Henry, please say something baby,” I called, hitting his hand.He blinked but
Henry. We have been in Maldives for a while now and as much as I want to stay here with Gwen for a very long time, I couldn’t. We have a life back at home and I could tell Gwen was missing the kids and our families. So after staying for about a month—left to me I would stay here forever, we returned home and went back to our new life, only that I didn’t want Gwen to work. She always looks exhausted after coming back from work. She was having a tough pregnancy and I wanted to do everything for her. So even when she requested going back to work even though she wasn’t fine I had to say yes so I wouldn’t stress her out. Doctors advise. But for safety purposes, I got her secretary Alice to always keep an eye on her. I even made her stay in the same office as Gwen and made sure she called when she wasn’t fine.Gwen was strong, she was always there for me and the kids. She has a kind heart, she is different from every other woman and I never regret getting married to her. She’s my lifeline,
Gwen. One Week Later. It had been a week since Ryan died and everything had gone back together, even though he kinda spoiled my wedding, I was glad Henry and I did exchange our rings and vows before his appearance. It has been a week since we got married and I still can’t believe this fine man sleeping beside me was my husband. Again.I couldn’t get enough of him, he was too unreal to be this handsome. To me, it was a crime for someone to be this cute and handsome at the same time.I couldn’t take my eyes off him as he slept soundly beside me, it was day two of our honeymoon phase—yeah you heard that right, Henry wouldn’t let it go.He said he wanted an alone time with me in a different country and place so three days after our wedding and after Ryan’s death, we left the country for Maldives.Henry had already gotten the reservation and everything ready before coming, so it wasn’t difficult for us to settle down.I could remember how horny Henry was as soon as we entered our room, he
Gwen.“I have a question for you baby,” he started but I still didn’t look at him. He shouldn’t ask me anything when I’m still mad at him. Everything that happened today was a mess, though I have an idea about it that doesn’t mean I was ready for the drama Ryan was bringing with him.I wouldn’t lie that I wasn’t scared when he held me with that knife pointing at my neck, I was scared out of my mind that any movement would get me killed. I was scared but after seeing the reassuring look in Henry’s eyes I knew everything was going to be fine. More reason why I didn’t panic.“Tell me, apart from hearing your mother talk about Ryan, did you hear something else?” He asked and I kept quiet. When I noticed he wouldn’t stop asking until I answered I shook my head.“What if I told you that everything that happened today was planned?” He asked, dropping the bombshell.I froze after hearing that, he didn’t just say that.I couldn’t say anything, in fact, it felt like I couldn’t hear anything fro
Henry. The gunshot sounded in the room accompanied by Gwen’s scream and I watch, I watch with satisfaction how it went straight to the fucker and hit his chest. I rushed forward and held Gwen in my arms, protecting her from the bastard's blood. The loud thud of his body dropping on the ground and the heavy sound of a boot on the sand told me everything went well.I looked behind me and saw Ryan trying to catch his breath with his hand on his chest like he could stop the blood from coming out. I took my eyes off him as my men took him out.“Are you alright baby?” I asked, looking down at my wife who wasn’t moving in my arms.I pulled from the hug and stared at her, her eyes were open but she wasn’t saying anything.“Talk to me baby, are you alright?” I asked worriedly while searching her body for any injuries. I hissed when I saw a scratch on her neck, it must be from the knife.Gwen blinked and then as she had just snapped out of her thought she held my hand, staring at me with her be
Henry. “You want me right? Just me?” She asked and he smiled. No. “Now we are talking, yes I want you. You should know that for a long time now I have always wanted you even though you are already mine,” he said.I groaned as I flexed my jaw muscles. How delusional could one be to think someone who isn’t in love with him is his? He must be mad.“Right, then let them go and just take me,” she said.I blinked and looked at her in disbelief, she didn’t say what I think I just heard right?“Gwen…” I started only to get interrupted by her.“Take me instead and don’t hurt any of them,” I could feel my bliss boiling as I heard her repeat the same words. She shouldn’t agree to his terms, he was only above us because he was with a gun. I fear he would shoot if I decide to attack him and that is what I do not want. Someone might get hurt.Ryan paused, he did nothing, said nothing but only looked at Gwen with suspicious eyes.“You are being way too easy Gwen, tell me what do you have planned?
Henry.I knew he would be here, I knew he must have gotten a whiff of the wedding and where it would be held. I had everything planned to capture the bastard if he gets here but I never thought he would be this early, never thought he would come and spoil my wedding. The bastard was really getting on my nerves.I looked at Gwen who stood frozen beside me, her eyes wide open as they stared at Ryan in shock. I know what she is thinking right now, she couldn’t believe he was here, and not only that he also had a gun.The whole place was completely quiet as Ryan took slow steps inside, he had a huge grin on his face while taking in everyone’s reaction.“Good day people, I bet you are all surprised to see me here?” He asked but no one answered.I glared at him while trying to bring my phone out discreetly. I quickly typed and sent a message on it after making sure he wasn’t looking.I slipped the phone back into my phone pocket after doing that.“It’s very rude of you guys not to invite me
