It had been weeks since Herbie last saw Mandy and he had been worried that she was intentionally avoiding him. It was like everything changed after that night of the kiss. He didn’t know whether to be thankful it happened because it gave him the push to confront what he had been feeling for her all along or to regret it happened because after that, he couldn’t get a hold of her.
He would call her on the phone and it was always Annie who would answer. He would visit their apartment before he left for work, or after work and still it was Annie she got to see. In all those times, he had to think of reasons real quick and he was not good making up excuses.
One time, he said he ran out of coffee. He knew it was the most ridiculous excuse because well, there were dozens of coffee shops, one right at the groundfloor of their building and the others were just a few blocks away. The ridiculousness of his excuse was written all over Annie’s face but she gave him an unopened pack anyway.
“Herbert! Come on in!” Annie casually said. If there was one thing good about the situation, it was that, Annie seemed to be starting to warm up to him again.
“Thank you. Going somewhere?” he asked nervously.
“Yes. I’m going on a trip for work.”
“I see.”
“So, what brings you here? You know, I really can not stay long.”
“Ahhm… I - I - I, I mean, my- my tv broke.”
“And?”
“There’s this tv show that I just need to watch.” Even to his ears, his excuses were getting weirder and weirder.
“Ah so you want to watch tv?”
“Is it okay? I mean, it’s just that ...” Herbie did not want to say he was watching that series that he and Mandy decided was awful.
“I guess.” Annie said lifting her duffle bag. “Hey, just lock the door and pull out the plugs when you leave.”
“Alright, thanks!… Take care!” he said as he watched Annie close the door.
It was almost midnight. He couldn’t believe he had spent his time on Annie’s couch watching tv for hours. He didn’t watch anything actually. He just channel surfed to kill time.
Feeling a little tired, he arranged the pillows and lied down on the couch and finally gave up watching tv.
At half past midnight, the door to 1204 opened. It was Mandy. She threw her keys on the table and put down her bags containing her personal stuff and her cameras. She proceeded to the bathroom, took off all her clothes and went under the shower to freshen up.
It was a relief that Annie was not there this time. Her sister had been giving her the cold-shoulder treatment since she learned of her leaving the job. She had been dropping some jabs, too, about the bills that needed to be paid and things for the apartment that needed to be purchased. Mandy’s relationship with Annie had really been strained this time.
Mandy turned the shower knobs several times, making sure that the water was not too cold and not too hot for her body. In the last weeks, her baths had always been quick. But at that moment, she really took her time. She lifted her head and closed her eyes, her face directly receiving the water from the shower sprinkler. A few minutes under the lukewarm water took her to another place. Then she heard the door to the bathroom open.
Her instincts told her to throw the shampoo bottle towards the door.
Bog! The bottle hit someone.
“Aw!” Mandy recognized his voice.
“Herbie?”
“Ah, yes?” Herbie still holding his head while crawled on the floor just by the bathroom door.
“Don’t look and get out of the bathroom!” Mandy shouted in panic grabbing her towel and wrapping it around her body.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t know you were here!” Herbie replied.
“Okay, you may look now.” Mandy said. But it was after she had gone to her room and dressed up. “Okay, explain…” as she sat beside Herbie on the couch.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t know you were here already. I asked Annie if I can watch tv here and she said yes.”
“Watch tv?”
“Yeah, which reminds me that I have to buy a new television in case Annie decides to check my alibi.”
“What?”
“You see, I’ve been coming up with ridiculous excuses to come here. You know, to see you.”
Mandy was trying her best not to look at him as he explained himself but she could see him at the corner of her eyes and thought that he was really cute when he’s nervous like that. She was stopping a smile from breaking on her face but when their eyes met, she just gave in.
“Alright. I’m sorry, too!… I hope your head doesn’t hurt anymore!”
“Now that I finally see you smiling, it does not hurt anymore!… So how are you?”
“Oh, I don’t know.”
“What’s going on with you and Annie?”
“It’s really bad, Herbie… I thought I am gonna find some jobs maybe one or two but there’s been nothing. Now, Annie is ice cold with me and I have no face to show my parents.”
Herbie placed his finger under her chin to lift her head up then said, “Hey, I know what would cheer you up!”
“Yeah? What?”
“Wait here.” Herbie ran to his apartment as Mandy watched him from the couch.
“What is it behind your back?”
“Guess.” Herbie gesturing Mandy to join him at the kitchen.
“Oh, that’s the jacket you borrowed from me.”
“Haha, that reminds me that I do have that big jacket of yours… But these are your favorites, muffins” Herbie placing them in front of Mandy, “and daisies!”
“Wow! Thank you, Herbie!” but Mandy’s face didn’t seem to be thrilled like she used to. Eversince she learned Herbie gave the exact same muffin and daisies to Annie, they weren’t her favorites anymore.
“Is there something wrong? You didn’t like them?… It’s funny ‘cause you know I brought you these a few weeks ago and it was Annie who answered the door so she thought it was for her.”
Mandy smiled hearing Herbie tell this story and suddenly, they’re her favorites again, muffins and daisies from the store downstairs called Ryley’s.
Each of them took a muffin. Each bite brought both their eyes to each other’s faces. Herbie’s eyes landed on her mouth and right then he remembered the feel of her lips on his. Unknown to Herbie, Mandy was thinking about the same thing. In both their minds, they were wondering whether they would taste each other’s lips again.
Herbie thought it wasn’t the best time to bring up the kiss, the kiss that still lingered in his mind, the kiss that he craved for, the kiss that made him forget all the other kisses he had received and given. At that moment, he just wanted to make up for lost time. He just wanted to cheer her up. He was able to convince Mandy for a trip out of the city. They could use the time to unwind and forget all about the worries that kept their minds preoccupied. So with little or no sleep for both of them, they packed their bags early morning with no clear destination. They both figured, it would be exciting to make decisions on the fly. Seated side by side in a bus, Herbie gave up his favorite window seat for Mandy. At that point, he would give up anything and everything for her. Now that he was sure he was falling in love with her ex-girlfriend’s sister, if he hasn’t already fallen, every touch just felt different, for this time he knew it wasn’t just physical, it wa
Name a color. Every color that you could think of was right there before Herbie’s eyes. So different from the usual view from 1205 which was usually just different shades of gray depending on which building you would like to look at. There were trees alright and maybe some birds that maybe got lost from their flocks but they were nothing compared to the view that was right before him that morning. The sound of the city, especially on a busy day, masked the sound of birds, or the sound of water flowing from the creek nearby and was heading to where all bodies of water meet - the ocean. Within their building, it was always the artificial smell of fresh air that he knew came from a bottled spray or that pine tree air freshener one would always see hanging from an airconditioning vent. Right outside, was air one could see and sometimes feel from all the smoke and dust that were mixed with it. From where he sat that lazy Saturday morning, he stopped browsing
The shock on both Herbie’s and Kelly’s faces was undeniable it trickled to both Lucy and Mandy. Well, Lucy was more of surprised than shocked while Mandy was worried. “You know, Herbie, Kelly?” Lucy asked her niece. “Yy-yes, Aunt Lucy. He - he’s my boss! Kelly said looking for an assurance on Herbie’s face that it was okay to tell her the truth. “Bb-but it’s only now that I’m meeting…ahhmmmm….” she was waiting for Herbie to fill in her sentence but… “Oh, that’s his wife, Mandy. Isn’t she pretty?” Lucy filled in. “Yes, she is. Nice to meet you, Herbie’s wife, Mandy. I’m Kelly, your husband’s secretary.” Kelly said as they both went for a handshake then gave each other kisses on both cheeks. “What a small world!.. Hey, it’s good that you all know one another! But it’s almost 10 and there are things that I need to attend to so I’ll leave you three to talk about what you need to do.” Lucy
Herbie and Mandy agreed to meet at Ryley’s at 7:00 in the evening that night, a habit they had developed after their trip together. It was enough to keep him calm. He didn’t want to mess up what they had going by talking about the night of the kiss. He felt that Mandy wasn’t ready to entertain anything romantic at this time. Besides, being mistaken for a couple most of the time was working to his advantage that men who might be taking interest in her could be thinking twice to even try to approach her. And he loved it that she didn’t even try to correct people about that. Herbie was in his third cup of coffee and Mandy had not arrived yet. It was unusual. That’s another thing that he loved about her. She didn’t like being late and if ever she did, she always had some valid reason. If it was not Mandy that he was meeting, he would probably be on his 10thstick of cigarette. Before her, cigarette was his best friend and companion. But Mandy didn’t
Mandy kept staring at her watch. She was feeling so uneasy finding herself having dinner with Migs after the very brief meeting she had with him that afternoon. Well, she expected to be grilled about her background, her experience as a freelance photographer before being offered a job but it did not happen. All the practice she had in front of the mirror answering interview questions appeared useless. Not that she was complaining. She got a job, though not a permanent one, but she can finally keep herself afloat in the coming few months with the assignments that Migs entrusted her that day.“Hey, can you excuse me for a while, I just gotta go to the ladies’ room.”“Sure! I think it’s over there.” Migs pointing to the doors near the bar.Mandy pretended to proceed to the ladies’ room but she was really aiming for the payphone a few feet from the bar. Since she cut ties from the hospital she worked
“What can I do for you, Sir?” the male attendant asked Herbie even before he was able to step into the shop itself. He was looking up at the name just to make sure he got the right one this time. There was about three photo shops in the mall and he got the right shop on his third try.“Ahmmm, I’m here to pick up a photo album for Miss Mandy, Mandy Garcia?”“Can I have the receipt please?”“Oh, sure!” Herbie pulled the paper out from his pocket and gave it to the store attendant.Herbie sneaked out of his office telling his secretary, Kelly, that he was taking his lunch in a resto for a change. He intentionally skipped telling her about picking up Mr. And Mrs. Cuevas’ Wedding album because he knew she would insist to have a look at it. He was excited himself to see it. “I told you, you’d like it!” Kelly said as she placed the bag with the wedding album on the chair in front of Herbie’s table. Then she sat on the other chair waiting for Herbie to say something.Herbie threw a happy look at Kelly. He thought him with her was perfect.“You still owe me a story, boss!” “What story?”“Oh, so you don’t want to tell me the story about your wife, Mr. Molina?”“Oh, that!”“Yesss! That!!!… So?”“Well, what is there to tell? Your aunt and uncle thought we were married probably because we were sharing a room and a bed and we did not have the chance to correct them.”“Well, I heard a different story.”“Wait, what? From whom?”“From my aunt and uncle, whoelse?”
The night was getting deeper and none between Herbie and Migs wanted to leave first.“Hey, look at that, it’s almost one in the morning!” it was Mandy who spoke. “You, too, have got work to do later so you better both get going.”“Oh yeah! So Herbie, why don’t you go first.” Migs suggested.“Oh but…” Herbie wanted to object but he saw Mandy gesturing for him to go ahead and so he did.It only took Herbie a few seconds to get inside his apartment but that night, he walked really slowly because he was trying to see whether Migs was leaving also.Herbie stayed by the hallway for a while listening to the sound inside unit 1204. He was glad he heard footsteps because that could only mean Migs was also on his way out. He heard the doorknob turn. Herbie immediately entered his unit but did not lock the door.“What’s taking him so l
“Oh my God! Did we just kiss?” Mandy said to herself touching her lips. She couldn’t recall a time when a kiss had been that good. Her first kiss was forgettable. It did not live up to the hype that everyone was saying about first kisses.Time did not stop. There was not much fireworks and gosh, she wanted so much for sparks to fly when their lips met. She closed her eyes real good. She felt his lips, every part of it on hers and that was it.Not that Mandy was an expert on kissing. That was not that at all. She only had a few boyfriends and the kiss had always been a barometer as to whether the relationship had some sort of potential.“Huh, when was the last time I have felt like this over a kiss? Wow, that was a long time ago… Oh my God!” Mandy suddenly felt embarrassed thinking about how she chased Herbie’s lips for more kisses. “But he was chasing my lips, too.” She laugh
Herbie was fidgeting as he and Annie waited for their turn to board a bus. He was biting the nail on his thumb, too.Annie, on the other hand, was watching Herbie at the corner of her eyes. She was controlling her smile. She was seeing Herbert, her boyfriend in college, the way he would fidget and bite his nails when he was nervous. But he looked much more handsome than he was back then. All the success that he had at work was adding a lot to his character. But part of his charisma was that - his old fidgety and nervous self.“I see you haven’t changed a bit!” Annie spoke as she bumped her shoulder lightly at Herbie.“Wh-what?”“I meant that!” she replied using her eyes and lips to point at the finger that was still attached to his mouth.“Oh.” Herbie suddenly felt embarrassed and hesitantly stopped the biting.Herbie placed all their bags at the compar
For a few seconds the world stopped for Herbie and Mandy. They both let go for that brief moment. The rules, the inhibitions, the fear, all gone. It was not Herbie, her sister’s ex kissing her. It’s just Herbie, the man that he trusted with all her heart. His kiss brought her the same electric energy she felt the first time their lips met. And she was holding his face, prolonging the kiss.Everything that he wanted to do the first time they kissed Herbie was doing that moment. His hand behind her head pressing her lips harder onto his. His other arm supporting her back, caressing her there. Then his phone vibrated, startling them both. He chased her lips again when the vibration stopped. But then it jiggled again. Foreheads together, they laughed looking at each other’s lips that already looked swollen. Their lips met one more time then parted for good when the phone received a message this time.Herbie did not want to look at the message nor t
Herbie was pacing the floor of their apartment’s lobby. He was nervous and excited at the same time. He was shaking his limbs because he felt like his nerves were taking over his body.“Herb!” Mandy called as she was entering the lobby.Herbie kept on looking at the elevator and was surprised that the person he was waiting for was be coming from outside.“Mandy!… You look…” The words in his head were beautiful, gorgeous, stunning but he instead said “different.” which he regretted. He could normally say those words to her but now that the tickle in his heart had grown into a full-blown flame, he was afraid things would be more awkward between them than it already was, at least on his end.“Wow, thank you, Herbie. I’ll take different. Although I’d love it if you’d say gorgeous or stunning.”“Well, you are stunning.&rdqu
Mandy pushed Migs away. She didn’t expect that kiss at all. She would’ve slapped him on the face if she hadn’t thought about the job that she badly needed.“You didn’t like it?”Mandy answered him by gesturing how tired she was and that she wanted to sleep.Upon closing the door behind her…“Oh my God! What was that? Did I do something to give him the idea of kissing me?”Mandy knew Migs liked her. He wouldn’t spend all this time with her if he didn’t. It was not part of his job as an editor to tag along in her photoshoots and it’s not part of his job to pick her up or bring her home. She was already the toast of the office. She even overheard some women calling her “Mig’s flavor of the month.” Some would even say she just got the job because Migs was smitten. She was psyching herself to endure. The job that she wanted entailed a lot
