“Oh my God! Did we just kiss?” Mandy said to herself touching her lips. She couldn’t recall a time when a kiss had been that good. Her first kiss was forgettable. It did not live up to the hype that everyone was saying about first kisses.
Time did not stop. There was not much fireworks and gosh, she wanted so much for sparks to fly when their lips met. She closed her eyes real good. She felt his lips, every part of it on hers and that was it.
Not that Mandy was an expert on kissing. That was not that at all. She only had a few boyfriends and the kiss had always been a barometer as to whether the relationship had some sort of potential.
“Huh, when was the last time I have felt like this over a kiss? Wow, that was a long time ago… Oh my God!” Mandy suddenly felt embarrassed thinking about how she chased Herbie’s lips for more kisses. “But he was chasing my lips, too.” She laugh
A knock at the door.“Who is it?” “Herbie.”Mandy ran to the door to let him in.“Your sister here?”“You mean, Annie?”Herbie shrugged his shoulder shaking his head with a smirk. Mandy had been teasing him that since he broke up with her sister about 13 years ago, Yes, it was that long time ago!he couldn’t seem to say her name. They had been in the same room many many times after that and those times had always been awkward. Not that he still had feelings for Annie. There he said her name though only in his head. It’s just awkward period. He could choose not to be around Annie but that tiny little tickle in his heart far outweighed the awkwardness of the atmosphere. Nope, it’s not her that’s giving him that feeling, it’s actually her sister, Mandy!"What’s up?"
YEAR 2016 Herbie was at the time of his life when one could say he had everything - a nice fully-furnished apartment in one of the posh condominium buildings in Taguig, his own luxury car paid for by his company, off the charts pay rate and a lot of other perks that come with being President and CEO of Superb Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. Nope, he didnāt dream of all the power and money. In fact, he didnāt have a plan at all. One could say he was just going with the flow. When he was first hired, he didnāt even like what he was doing - merely encoding numbers didnāt challenge his mind at all. That meeting one afternoon with the management team changed his life when he opened his mouth to explain to them what he thought the numbers meant. He impressed not just his boss and the board of directors but even himself! From then on, he was no longer an anonymous encoder in one of those cubicles. He got promoted year after year.
He blurted it out loud enough bringing Annie out of her room. āHerbert?ā Herbie turned around to find that it was Annie who called. He looked down on the picture in his hand then looked up at Annie. Oh, yes, it is Annie! his head screaming. And what about Annie? She was equally surprised, baffled, shocked. Annieās eyes grew big when she confirmed that it was really him. Mandy came out of her room opposite her sisterās, looked at Annie and Herbie back and forth and asked - āYou know each other?ā āHeās our neighbor?ā Annie asked turning her attention to Mandy. āYes, why?ā¦. Is there a problem?ā Mandy asking her sister. When she didnāt get an answer, she looked at Herbie, who suddenly stuttered as he said his goodbye that sounded like - āMandy, Annie, nice to meet you twoā¦ Iāll see you around.ā When the door shut after himā¦ āWhat was that all about, Mandy?ā
YEAR 2010 āOne brief kiss. How can it still be in my head?ā as he stirred for the nth time in his bed clutching his favorite pillow. He tried to dismiss the kiss as a result of Mandyās drunkenness. Although she was not drunken at all. She got tipsy alright but itās one that went away almost immediately after a cup of black coffee. He laughed at himself realizing that he was a 30 year-old grown man gushing and blushing at that one brief smack on the lips that probably meant nothing to the giver. He ran about a thousand scenarios in his head about the perfect reaction he should have given. He shouldāve kissed her back, maybe hold her face to keep her mouth in place or maybe grab her by the waist to keep her body close then hold her by the back of her head so he could press his lips on hers. He stopped himself before he went any further. The fact was, he didnāt do any of those scenarios. He froze for what seemed like forever before he could pro
It had been weeks since Herbie last saw Mandy and he had been worried that she was intentionally avoiding him. It was like everything changed after that night of the kiss. He didnāt know whether to be thankful it happened because it gave him the push to confront what he had been feeling for her all along or to regret it happened because after that, he couldnāt get a hold of her. He would call her on the phone and it was always Annie who would answer. He would visit their apartment before he left for work, or after work and still it was Annie she got to see. In all those times, he had to think of reasons real quick and he was not good making up excuses. One time, he said he ran out of coffee. He knew it was the most ridiculous excuse because well, there were dozens of coffee shops, one right at the groundfloor of their building and the others were just a few blocks away. The ridiculousness of his excuse was written all over Annieās face but she gave him an unopened pa
Herbie thought it wasnāt the best time to bring up the kiss, the kiss that still lingered in his mind, the kiss that he craved for, the kiss that made him forget all the other kisses he had received and given. At that moment, he just wanted to make up for lost time. He just wanted to cheer her up. He was able to convince Mandy for a trip out of the city. They could use the time to unwind and forget all about the worries that kept their minds preoccupied. So with little or no sleep for both of them, they packed their bags early morning with no clear destination. They both figured, it would be exciting to make decisions on the fly. Seated side by side in a bus, Herbie gave up his favorite window seat for Mandy. At that point, he would give up anything and everything for her. Now that he was sure he was falling in love with her ex-girlfriendās sister, if he hasnāt already fallen, every touch just felt different, for this time he knew it wasnāt just physical, it wa
Name a color. Every color that you could think of was right there before Herbieās eyes. So different from the usual view from 1205 which was usually just different shades of gray depending on which building you would like to look at. There were trees alright and maybe some birds that maybe got lost from their flocks but they were nothing compared to the view that was right before him that morning. The sound of the city, especially on a busy day, masked the sound of birds, or the sound of water flowing from the creek nearby and was heading to where all bodies of water meet - the ocean. Within their building, it was always the artificial smell of fresh air that he knew came from a bottled spray or that pine tree air freshener one would always see hanging from an airconditioning vent. Right outside, was air one could see and sometimes feel from all the smoke and dust that were mixed with it. From where he sat that lazy Saturday morning, he stopped browsing
The shock on both Herbieās and Kellyās faces was undeniable it trickled to both Lucy and Mandy. Well, Lucy was more of surprised than shocked while Mandy was worried. āYou know, Herbie, Kelly?ā Lucy asked her niece. āYy-yes, Aunt Lucy. He - heās my boss! Kelly said looking for an assurance on Herbieās face that it was okay to tell her the truth. āBb-but itās only now that Iām meetingā¦ahhmmmmā¦.ā she was waiting for Herbie to fill in her sentence butā¦ āOh, thatās his wife, Mandy. Isnāt she pretty?ā Lucy filled in. āYes, she is. Nice to meet you, Herbieās wife, Mandy. Iām Kelly, your husbandās secretary.ā Kelly said as they both went for a handshake then gave each other kisses on both cheeks. āWhat a small world!.. Hey, itās good that you all know one another! But itās almost 10 and there are things that I need to attend to so Iāll leave you three to talk about what you need to do.ā Lucy

Herbie was fidgeting as he and Annie waited for their turn to board a bus. He was biting the nail on his thumb, too.Annie, on the other hand, was watching Herbie at the corner of her eyes. She was controlling her smile. She was seeing Herbert, her boyfriend in college, the way he would fidget and bite his nails when he was nervous. But he looked much more handsome than he was back then. All the success that he had at work was adding a lot to his character. But part of his charisma was that - his old fidgety and nervous self.“I see you haven’t changed a bit!” Annie spoke as she bumped her shoulder lightly at Herbie.“Wh-what?”“I meant that!” she replied using her eyes and lips to point at the finger that was still attached to his mouth.“Oh.” Herbie suddenly felt embarrassed and hesitantly stopped the biting.Herbie placed all their bags at the compar
For a few seconds the world stopped for Herbie and Mandy. They both let go for that brief moment. The rules, the inhibitions, the fear, all gone. It was not Herbie, her sister’s ex kissing her. It’s just Herbie, the man that he trusted with all her heart. His kiss brought her the same electric energy she felt the first time their lips met. And she was holding his face, prolonging the kiss.Everything that he wanted to do the first time they kissed Herbie was doing that moment. His hand behind her head pressing her lips harder onto his. His other arm supporting her back, caressing her there. Then his phone vibrated, startling them both. He chased her lips again when the vibration stopped. But then it jiggled again. Foreheads together, they laughed looking at each other’s lips that already looked swollen. Their lips met one more time then parted for good when the phone received a message this time.Herbie did not want to look at the message nor t
Herbie was pacing the floor of their apartment’s lobby. He was nervous and excited at the same time. He was shaking his limbs because he felt like his nerves were taking over his body.“Herb!” Mandy called as she was entering the lobby.Herbie kept on looking at the elevator and was surprised that the person he was waiting for was be coming from outside.“Mandy!… You look…” The words in his head were beautiful, gorgeous, stunning but he instead said “different.” which he regretted. He could normally say those words to her but now that the tickle in his heart had grown into a full-blown flame, he was afraid things would be more awkward between them than it already was, at least on his end.“Wow, thank you, Herbie. I’ll take different. Although I’d love it if you’d say gorgeous or stunning.”“Well, you are stunning.&rdqu
Mandy pushed Migs away. She didn’t expect that kiss at all. She would’ve slapped him on the face if she hadn’t thought about the job that she badly needed.“You didn’t like it?”Mandy answered him by gesturing how tired she was and that she wanted to sleep.Upon closing the door behind her…“Oh my God! What was that? Did I do something to give him the idea of kissing me?”Mandy knew Migs liked her. He wouldn’t spend all this time with her if he didn’t. It was not part of his job as an editor to tag along in her photoshoots and it’s not part of his job to pick her up or bring her home. She was already the toast of the office. She even overheard some women calling her “Mig’s flavor of the month.” Some would even say she just got the job because Migs was smitten. She was psyching herself to endure. The job that she wanted entailed a lot
The night was getting deeper and none between Herbie and Migs wanted to leave first.“Hey, look at that, it’s almost one in the morning!” it was Mandy who spoke. “You, too, have got work to do later so you better both get going.”“Oh yeah! So Herbie, why don’t you go first.” Migs suggested.“Oh but…” Herbie wanted to object but he saw Mandy gesturing for him to go ahead and so he did.It only took Herbie a few seconds to get inside his apartment but that night, he walked really slowly because he was trying to see whether Migs was leaving also.Herbie stayed by the hallway for a while listening to the sound inside unit 1204. He was glad he heard footsteps because that could only mean Migs was also on his way out. He heard the doorknob turn. Herbie immediately entered his unit but did not lock the door.“What’s taking him so l
“I told you, you’d like it!” Kelly said as she placed the bag with the wedding album on the chair in front of Herbie’s table. Then she sat on the other chair waiting for Herbie to say something.Herbie threw a happy look at Kelly. He thought him with her was perfect.“You still owe me a story, boss!” “What story?”“Oh, so you don’t want to tell me the story about your wife, Mr. Molina?”“Oh, that!”“Yesss! That!!!… So?”“Well, what is there to tell? Your aunt and uncle thought we were married probably because we were sharing a room and a bed and we did not have the chance to correct them.”“Well, I heard a different story.”“Wait, what? From whom?”“From my aunt and uncle, whoelse?”
“What can I do for you, Sir?” the male attendant asked Herbie even before he was able to step into the shop itself. He was looking up at the name just to make sure he got the right one this time. There was about three photo shops in the mall and he got the right shop on his third try.“Ahmmm, I’m here to pick up a photo album for Miss Mandy, Mandy Garcia?”“Can I have the receipt please?”“Oh, sure!” Herbie pulled the paper out from his pocket and gave it to the store attendant.Herbie sneaked out of his office telling his secretary, Kelly, that he was taking his lunch in a resto for a change. He intentionally skipped telling her about picking up Mr. And Mrs. Cuevas’ Wedding album because he knew she would insist to have a look at it. He was excited himself to see it. He knew Mandy did a wonderful job with it. He had not seen it and he’s already pr
Mandy kept staring at her watch. She was feeling so uneasy finding herself having dinner with Migs after the very brief meeting she had with him that afternoon. Well, she expected to be grilled about her background, her experience as a freelance photographer before being offered a job but it did not happen. All the practice she had in front of the mirror answering interview questions appeared useless. Not that she was complaining. She got a job, though not a permanent one, but she can finally keep herself afloat in the coming few months with the assignments that Migs entrusted her that day.“Hey, can you excuse me for a while, I just gotta go to the ladies’ room.”“Sure! I think it’s over there.” Migs pointing to the doors near the bar.Mandy pretended to proceed to the ladies’ room but she was really aiming for the payphone a few feet from the bar. Since she cut ties from the hospital she worked
