The shock on both Herbie’s and Kelly’s faces was undeniable it trickled to both Lucy and Mandy. Well, Lucy was more of surprised than shocked while Mandy was worried.
“You know, Herbie, Kelly?” Lucy asked her niece.
“Yy-yes, Aunt Lucy. He - he’s my boss! Kelly said looking for an assurance on Herbie’s face that it was okay to tell her the truth. “Bb-but it’s only now that I’m meeting…ahhmmmm….” she was waiting for Herbie to fill in her sentence but…
“Oh, that’s his wife, Mandy. Isn’t she pretty?” Lucy filled in.
“Yes, she is. Nice to meet you, Herbie’s wife, Mandy. I’m Kelly, your husband’s secretary.” Kelly said as they both went for a handshake then gave each other kisses on both cheeks.
“What a small world!.. Hey, it’s good that you all know one another! But it’s almost 10 and there are things that I need to attend to so I’ll leave you three to talk about what you need to do.” Lucy told them heading downstairs.
“Small world, indeed.” Herbie said as Mandy and Kelly joined him in producing a nervous laugh.
All three heaved a sigh of relief when Lucy left them.
“You’re married, Boss?” Kelly asked excitedly.
“You’re her niece?” Herbie asked, too.
“Well, yes, boss, niece-in-law actually. Kelly C. Royo. Kelly Cuevas-Royo. My father is Uncle Ramon’s younger brother… Wait, did you get married in a hurry? Is she pregnant?”
“No!” Herbie and Mandy both protested.
“Well, they mistook us for a married couple and we didn’t get the chance to correct them. Long story, Kelly. We are hoping we could tell them the truth ourselves, we’re just looking for the right time.”
“Right!” Kelly was nodding her head, smiling at Herbie looking like she had figured something out.
“It’s not what you think, Kelly.”
“I said, right, Boss!”
“Mandy, can you just do your thing and I’ll talk to this woman real quick.” he said pulling Kelly on one side of the room.
“Oh, nice meeting you again, Mrs. Molina, I mean, Mandy.” Kelly was hardly audible to Mandy as she said the last part of it, but audible enough for Herbie to hear… “What’s happening, Boss? Let me just say, she is really gorgeous! Even better than the picture on your table.”
“Will you stop that? Can’t you see I’m dying here?”
“Alright, sorry. I’m just thrilled to see her in person.”
“I know. The story about how we met your Aunt and Uncle, I’ll tell you when we get back to the office.”
“All of it?”
Herbie shook his head and scoffed. “Yeah, all of it… but for now will you let her focus on her work?”
“Okay. But let me just say…” Herbie stopped Kelly from making any more comments about him or Mandy or both of them. “Okay, I’ll leave. If you need me I’ll be downstairs, Boss.”
Herbie then turned to look at Mandy who was then busy writing and drawing in her yellow pad paper. He stood behind her and was amazed at what he saw. On the paper she categorized her shots for each part of the event - before, during and after, and then subcategorized some parts as shots that were choreographed and candid. She wrote down shots that she needed to capture and had allotted a number of shots for her categories.
“Herbie, sit here.” she said pulling him beside her.
“Herbie, I will really need your assistance especially in the candid shots, like when they say their vows or when they wear the rings, ‘cause we can not really ask them to repeat those parts.”
Kelly was about to call them for lunch but stopped for a while when she saw the look on Herbie’s face as he watched Mandy. “My boss is in love!” Kelly was now sure about that.
“Aren’t you gonna ask them to act as they prepare for the ceremony?” Herbie asked recalling the pictures he had seen from the weddings of family and friends he had attended.
“No! I want it to be as organic as possible because then we can really capture the true excitement on their faces and they will not be even aware that we caught that moment.”
When they finished the shots of the preparations, they sat on a bench where snacks were being served. Mandy was so focused on the job she continued to doodle and scribble on her pad paper.
Herbie knew that when Mandy was this focused, she wouldn’t even have time to eat. He then picked a piece of chicken and potato and some noodles with his fork and offered it to her.
Mandy took a good look at the layers of food stuck in Herbie’s fork before taking them in into her mouth. Then he assembled another layer in his fork for him, then for her until they finished the food on their plates. He pratically forkfed her and wiped her mouth with a tissue, assisted her in drinking some water, as she had her hands full.
Unbeknownst to Herbie, Kelly had been watching them. They were quite a sight to behold. Kelly was thinking that if she wasn’t her boss and she didn’t know him, she would really think they were a married couple. Kelly took pictures of the two in her own camera and thought of gifting Herbie with copies of those precious moments she took of them.
Alas, the event was almost done. Most of the entourage and guests had gone and Mandy was just wrapping up on some shots she still wanted to get. When she finished, she headed to where Herbie was seated and sat on a chair beside him. She leaned her tired body to his side while he automatically wrapped his arm around her shoulder to prevent her from falling.
“Tired?” he asked looking down on her smelling her hair, which he thought still smelled great after a long day of sweating.
Mandy nodded looking up at him. “But happy. Thanks, Herbie!”
“Hmmm. Excuse me, Mandy, Boss. May I join you?”
“Kelly! Yes, please.” Mandy said with her head on Herbie’s shoulder.
“So Aunt Lucy and Uncle Ramon want me to give you the down payment. They said they are sorry they are not able to tell that to you in person but will definitely make up for that one of these days.” she said handing Mandy an envelope.
“Thank you, Kelly!” Mandy said while signing the receipt.
In their hotel room, as Herbie and Mandy prepared to return to the city, Mandy handed over some money to Herbie.
“What is this for?”
“It’s for all the loans you extended to me."
“Loans? I don’t remember extending you loans.”
“Okay. They’re not payment for loans. It’s your salary as my assistant.”
“Mandy, this is more than half of the down payment! I mean assistants don’t get a higher pay than their bosses!”
“Okay, that’s my thank you for everything you’ve done for me!”
“Hey, I know you don’t mean to offend me but I feel offended just a little bit.” Herbie was truthful when he said it. “I mean, we’re bestfriends, Mandy. Bestfriends aren’t supposed to say thank you with money.”
“Not if it’s a loan! And Herb, I don’t want you to think I’m taking advantage of our friendship.” she said pulling him close for a hug.
“I’m not thinking that, Mandy!” he hugged her back one arm around her waist with his other hand caressing the back of her head.
Mandy held on to Herbie in that position. Having his body so close just gave her calm and comfort.
Herbie immediately pushed Mandy back when he felt his arousal. Ever since that night that they still had not discussed, just the thought of Mandy was giving him his dose of excitement.
“Look, I’m gonna go take a bath.” Herbie turned away from her heading to the bathroom.
Mandy actually felt that - his arousal but she refused to believe that she was turned on, too. He was her sister’s ex and she was his ex-girlfriend’s sister. It just didn’t sound right to be feeling that way about Herbie.
Meanwhile, in the bathroom was Herbie’s very same thoughts but he just couldn’t stop falling for his ex-girlfriend’s sister!
Herbie and Mandy agreed to meet at Ryley’s at 7:00 in the evening that night, a habit they had developed after their trip together. It was enough to keep him calm. He didn’t want to mess up what they had going by talking about the night of the kiss. He felt that Mandy wasn’t ready to entertain anything romantic at this time. Besides, being mistaken for a couple most of the time was working to his advantage that men who might be taking interest in her could be thinking twice to even try to approach her. And he loved it that she didn’t even try to correct people about that. Herbie was in his third cup of coffee and Mandy had not arrived yet. It was unusual. That’s another thing that he loved about her. She didn’t like being late and if ever she did, she always had some valid reason. If it was not Mandy that he was meeting, he would probably be on his 10thstick of cigarette. Before her, cigarette was his best friend and companion. But Mandy didn’t
Mandy kept staring at her watch. She was feeling so uneasy finding herself having dinner with Migs after the very brief meeting she had with him that afternoon. Well, she expected to be grilled about her background, her experience as a freelance photographer before being offered a job but it did not happen. All the practice she had in front of the mirror answering interview questions appeared useless. Not that she was complaining. She got a job, though not a permanent one, but she can finally keep herself afloat in the coming few months with the assignments that Migs entrusted her that day.“Hey, can you excuse me for a while, I just gotta go to the ladies’ room.”“Sure! I think it’s over there.” Migs pointing to the doors near the bar.Mandy pretended to proceed to the ladies’ room but she was really aiming for the payphone a few feet from the bar. “I told you, you’d like it!” Kelly said as she placed the bag with the wedding album on the chair in front of Herbie’s table. Then she sat on the other chair waiting for Herbie to say something.Herbie threw a happy look at Kelly. He thought him with her was perfect.“You still owe me a story, boss!” “What story?”“Oh, so you don’t want to tell me the story about your wife, Mr. Molina?”“Oh, that!”“Yesss! That!!!… So?”“Well, what is there to tell? Your aunt and uncle thought we were married probably because we were sharing a room and a bed and we did not have the chance to correct them.”“Well, I heard a different story.”“Wait, what? From whom?”“From my aunt and uncle, whoelse?”
The night was getting deeper and none between Herbie and Migs wanted to leave first.“Hey, look at that, it’s almost one in the morning!” it was Mandy who spoke. “You, too, have got work to do later so you better both get going.”“Oh yeah! So Herbie, why don’t you go first.” Migs suggested.“Oh but…” Herbie wanted to object but he saw Mandy gesturing for him to go ahead and so he did.It only took Herbie a few seconds to get inside his apartment but that night, he walked really slowly because he was trying to see whether Migs was leaving also.Herbie stayed by the hallway for a while listening to the sound inside unit 1204. He was glad he heard footsteps because that could only mean Migs was also on his way out. He heard the doorknob turn. Herbie immediately entered his unit but did not lock the door.“What’s taking him so l
Mandy pushed Migs away. She didn’t expect that kiss at all. She would’ve slapped him on the face if she hadn’t thought about the job that she badly needed.“You didn’t like it?”Mandy answered him by gesturing how tired she was and that she wanted to sleep.Upon closing the door behind her…“Oh my God! What was that? Did I do something to give him the idea of kissing me?”Mandy knew Migs liked her. He wouldn’t spend all this time with her if he didn’t. It was not part of his job as an editor to tag along in her photoshoots and it’s not part of his job to pick her up or bring her home. She was already the toast of the office. She even overheard some women calling her “Mig’s flavor of the month.” Some would even say she just got the job because Migs was smitten. She was psyching herself to endure. Herbie was pacing the floor of their apartment’s lobby. He was nervous and excited at the same time. He was shaking his limbs because he felt like his nerves were taking over his body.“Herb!” Mandy called as she was entering the lobby.Herbie kept on looking at the elevator and was surprised that the person he was waiting for was be coming from outside.“Mandy!… You look…” The words in his head were beautiful, gorgeous, stunning but he instead said “different.” which he regretted. He could normally say those words to her but now that the tickle in his heart had grown into a full-blown flame, he was afraid things would be more awkward between them than it already was, at least on his end.“Wow, thank you, Herbie. I’ll take different. Although I’d love it if you’d say gorgeous or stunning.”“Well, you are stunning.&rdqu
For a few seconds the world stopped for Herbie and Mandy. They both let go for that brief moment. The rules, the inhibitions, the fear, all gone. It was not Herbie, her sister’s ex kissing her. It’s just Herbie, the man that he trusted with all her heart. His kiss brought her the same electric energy she felt the first time their lips met. And she was holding his face, prolonging the kiss.Everything that he wanted to do the first time they kissed Herbie was doing that moment. His hand behind her head pressing her lips harder onto his. His other arm supporting her back, caressing her there. Then his phone vibrated, startling them both. He chased her lips again when the vibration stopped. But then it jiggled again. Foreheads together, they laughed looking at each other’s lips that already looked swollen. “Oh my God! Did we just kiss?” Mandy said to herself touching her lips. She couldn’t recall a time when a kiss had been that good. Her first kiss was forgettable. It did not live up to the hype that everyone was saying about first kisses.Time did not stop. There was not much fireworks and gosh, she wanted so much for sparks to fly when their lips met. She closed her eyes real good. She felt his lips, every part of it on hers and that was it.Not that Mandy was an expert on kissing. That was not that at all. She only had a few boyfriends and the kiss had always been a barometer as to whether the relationship had some sort of potential.“Huh, when was the last time I have felt like this over a kiss? Wow, that was a long time ago… Oh my God!” Mandy suddenly felt embarrassed thinking about how she chased Herbie’s lips for more kisses. “But he was chasing my lips, too.” She laugh
Herbie was fidgeting as he and Annie waited for their turn to board a bus. He was biting the nail on his thumb, too.Annie, on the other hand, was watching Herbie at the corner of her eyes. She was controlling her smile. She was seeing Herbert, her boyfriend in college, the way he would fidget and bite his nails when he was nervous. But he looked much more handsome than he was back then. All the success that he had at work was adding a lot to his character. But part of his charisma was that - his old fidgety and nervous self.“I see you haven’t changed a bit!” Annie spoke as she bumped her shoulder lightly at Herbie.“Wh-what?”“I meant that!” she replied using her eyes and lips to point at the finger that was still attached to his mouth.“Oh.” Herbie suddenly felt embarrassed and hesitantly stopped the biting.Herbie placed all their bags at the compar
