I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Then Lara burst into laughter, her eyes full of amusement.

"Oh my God, really?!" she giggled, shaking her head. I sighed and poured more white wine into my glass, trying to process everything.

We were both in our nightdresses, stretched out on the couch in the living room, the dim light making everything feel warm and cozy.

"Just when I thought you were the boring one! Damn, girl, you've got some real drama going on!"

I rolled my eyes. "Drama? Please, Lara, stop teasing me."

"Babe, I'm serious. And I’m so glad I pushed you to go on that date. So, tell me, what did you say to Jamie when he said he was ready to fight for you?"

I let out a deep sigh. "I was speechless. I didn’t know what to say or do. For a second, I thought he was joking. But then I saw his face… he meant every word."

"See, that’s why I swore never to go on dates again. Too much drama!" Lara teased, shaking her head.

"No, don’t say that." She always jumped to conclusions. "I don’t blame myself for anything. Jamie knows what he wants, and that’s why he isn’t giving up on me."

Lara took my hand and squeezed it. "Listen, you’re smart, beautiful, independent, successful, and an amazing mother. Any man would be lucky to have you."

I took a sip from my glass, staring at the wine like it held the answers to my problems. "I’m just being me, Lara. After everything that man and his family put me through, I made a promise—to be a better person and, most importantly, the best mother to my son. That’s what drives me. I never even thought anyone would be interested in a single mother. Not that I’m ready to date."

Lara sighed dramatically. "Don’t sell yourself short just because you have a child. The right man will see your worth."

I shook my head. "I’m just not interested."

"Genevieve, no one is meant to be alone forever."

"I’m not alone. I have Jasper."

"I know," she smiled softly, "and he’ll always be yours. No one will take him away. But deep down, you miss having a man’s warmth, don’t you?"

"Ugh, Lara, please!" I groaned, covering my face with a pillow. "I’m always so exhausted I barely have time to think about that."

"Liar!" she shot me a playful glare.

I sighed. "Fine! Maybe just a little… but it doesn’t matter, right?"

Lara grinned knowingly. "So, are you going to give Jamie a chance?"

I groaned again. "You all keep getting it wrong! This is exactly why I didn’t want to go on that date."

"From what I heard, he’s a good guy. Are you really going to let him go just like that?"

I waved my hand dismissively. "You sound just like Jamie. He told me he understands I’m not ready for a relationship. He only asked for a friendly dinner. And after so much pressure, I finally gave in."

"And?"

"And now I can't believe he made me so uncomfortable in the end!"

Lara giggled, clearly enjoying the conversation.

"I won’t lie," I admitted. "I saw it in his eyes—he’s serious about me. He’s not even trying to hide it. He’s willing to do whatever it takes. I feel like I just walked into something I can’t handle."

"What did he say exactly?"

"He said he’ll respect my decision for now, that we can be friends… but he won’t stop trying to win me over."

Lara smirked. "I bet Alex’s behavior made him even more determined."

I sighed. "Maybe."

"And? What do you think about that?"

"I don’t know. I just hope I haven’t brought trouble upon myself."

Lara frowned. "What do you mean? You don’t trust him?"

"No, it’s not that. I just… I haven’t really paid much attention to Jamie. But my instincts tell me he’s a good guy. I just don’t know how he plans to win me over because, honestly, I only see him as a colleague and a friend. Nothing more."

Lara arched her brow. "Nothing more?"

I said nothing.

She sighed. "Genevieve, I feel like you’ve completely shut yourself off from love. No matter how hard someone tries to win your heart, it might be pointless if you don’t open yourself up."

I swallowed hard. Was she right? Had I locked my heart away?

"You’re an amazing person, Genevieve," she said softly. "I just want you to find someone who will love you beyond words. Someone who will cherish you."

"I’m glad I went on the date too," I admitted. "I just hate that Alex had to ruin everything. But… I’m grateful Jamie stood up for me."

Lara nodded. "I think Jamie was right about Alex being jealous. Why else would he be so mad about you seeing another man? After everything he put you through?"

"He’s an asshole. And I’m glad he’s got competition now. Someone as fierce as Jamie."

Lara smirked. "So, do you think Alex will try something now that he knows about Jasper?"

I stiffened. "I don’t know, and I don’t care. I have you, my brother, and security. No matter what, I will protect my son."

Lara’s eyes softened. "I love your zeal, Genevieve. But don’t be surprised if Alex is just looking for a way back into your life."

I clenched my jaw. "I honestly don’t care."

Lara hesitated before speaking again. "But wait, you mentioned Alex saying you both needed to talk at the café. Don’t you even want to hear his side of the story?"

I scoffed. "Never! He doesn’t deserve my time. What excuse could he possibly have for treating me like trash while I was pregnant with his child?"

Lara sighed. "You have a point. But I thought maybe you’d still want to hear him out. Even if just to shut the door completely."

I stayed silent, swirling the wine in my glass. My mind was a storm of emotions. Lara’s next words, however, sent a chill down my spine.

"Genevieve… what happens the day Jasper finds out the truth about his father? The fact that he’s alive? What if he ends up resenting you?"

My heart pounded in my chest. That was the one question I never wanted to face.

Genevieve's pov It was Friday, precisely 3:30 p.m., I walked into Alex’s office while he was busy typing on his laptop. The sound of my knock broke through the quiet hum of the room. “Come in,” he said, his eyes still glued to the screen. I stepped inside and gently closed the door behind me. “Still working?” I asked with a small smile, my voice teasing. He finally looked up, his face lighting up as he saw me. “Yeah, trying to wrap up this report,” he replied. “But I’m glad you’re here.” I walked over and sat on the visitor’s chair across from him, unable to take my eyes off the effortlessly charming man in front of me. He looked so… perfect. “You know I’ve told you not to sit there,” Alex said firmly, his tone leaving no room for argument. “Come here!” “Someone might walk in,” I whispered nervously, glancing at the closed door. “That’s my problem to handle,” he said with a smirk, gesturing toward himself. “Come to big daddy.” I felt my cheeks heat up at his w

Genevieve's POV Six Weeks Later: I rested my hand on my stomach, staring at the test strip again. Positive. My heart raced as I caught a glimpse of myself in the bathroom mirror. A shy smile crept onto my face, but it wasn’t just joy, it was nerves too. I was pregnant. Today was supposed to be special. I couldn’t wait to share this news with Alex, the man I loved. I imagined how tightly he would hold me when I told him. This would be the day he would finally announce our engagement to everyone, ending the secrecy of our office romance. I was tired of hiding. As I left the bathroom, I glanced down at my engagement ring. For the first time, I felt brave enough to wear it outside my home. Alex Woods was more than my boss; he was the heir to Woods Corporation, a massive empire known for tech, luxury hotels, and real estate. I arrived at the office and greeted Laura, the receptionist, with a smile before heading to my desk. But my excitement was short-lived. I decided to grab tea fr

  • My Ex-Fiancé's Regret   I have learnt my lesson

Genevieve’s POV Six Years Later I smiled as I stepped into my son’s room. My heart swelled with joy as I watched my little angel sleeping peacefully. Quietly, I shut the door and walked to his bed, sitting beside him. His tiny, perfect face made me melt every time. “My love,” I whispered, brushing my fingers gently over his cheek. “Jasper, darling.” I gave him a soft shake. “Mmm...” he groaned, squeezing his eyes shut. I chuckled. “You’ll be late for school,” I said. “Five more minutes,” he mumbled, burrowing under the covers. I laughed quietly. He was never a morning person, no matter how early he went to bed. “What if I drive you to school today?” I teased. His eyes flew open. “Really, Mama?” I nodded. “Gloria’s off today, so I’ll drop you off and pick you up too.” His face lit up. “Yay!” He jumped up and threw his little arms around me. “Good morning, Mama,” he said sweetly. “Good morning, my love.” I kissed his forehead. “Did you sleep well?” He nodded, grinning. “I h

  • My Ex-Fiancé's Regret   My past was knocking on my door

Genevieve’s povHis face was a ghost from my past, sharp and familiar, a face that once brought comfort but now left me breathless. The chiseled jaw, the neatly trimmed mustache, the dark, beautiful eyes. God, those eyes. They were unmistakable. The same ones I had gazed into with so much love years ago. The same ones I saw every morning in the little angel I dropped off at school. I didn’t know how long I stared, My mind was caught in a storm of disbelief and dread. My heart ached, a deep, sharp pain that rippled through me. What the hell was he doing here? And then it hit me. Could he be... the client?“No.” The word slipped out of me, a desperate whisper. I shook my head, trying to take the possibility away. This wasn’t real. It couldn’t be. His mouth quivered as if he was about to speak, and that’s when I snapped out of my daze.“Ge... Genevieve?” he finally said, he too was shocked, not planning to see me just the same way I wasn’t planning to meet him.“Sorry?” I managed to spea

  • My Ex-Fiancé's Regret   His gaze was unbearable

Alex’s povMy heart raced as soon as I saw her. Genie was walking away from me, her steps hurried, her figure retreating toward the café’s exit. Just like that day, years ago. My breathing went up, and my mouth went dry. I wanted to call out to her, to tell her to stop, but no words came. Instead, I stood there like a fool, watching her hair sway behind her with every step. Her hair… It wasn’t the same. The sleek, golden-brown strands I used to love running my fingers through had been replaced by darker, waiver locks. It suited her, of course it did, but the change clawed at something inside me, like a reminder that too much time had passed. Still, I would’ve recognized her anywhere. Even with her back to me, I knew her. By the time I snapped out of my daze, she was gone. Disappeared into the crowd, leaving behind nothing but a faint trace of her perfume that made my throat ache with regret.I sank into my chair, my hand fumbling for my phone. Alex’s povI’m used to getting what I want. I always have things just fall into place for me, like the world bends to my will. So, when I saw her walk back into the room, that familiar smile played on my lips. I assumed she was here to apologize, to make things right between us. But as she passed me, that smile quickly faded. She didn’t stop. She didn’t come to me. Instead, she went straight to the table where that other guy was sitting. They shook hands, exchanged a few words, and then sat down together.Something twisted in my chest, something sour and unfamiliar. Jealousy, maybe? It made me angry in a way I couldn’t quite control. I clenched my fist, trying to hold back the urge to storm over to them, to interrupt whatever the hell they were talking about. But how was I supposed to do that? I couldn’t figure out how to act in this situation. So I stayed where I was, watching them. She kept laughing at whatever he said, her eyes lighting up in a way that made me want to rip him apar

Alex’s povI clenched my fists as I watched the man with Genevieve rise to his feet. He ignored her attempt to hold him back and grabbed the stranger by the collar of his shirt, his jaw tight with anger. He looked like he wanted to strangle the guy right then and there, completely ignoring the people watching."Get the hell away from me!" he growled through gritted teeth. Clearly, he didn’t want to make a scene, but his anger was getting the best of him.The stranger didn’t back down. "You seem to have no manners, and I think you need to learn some. Genevieve’s povJamie was the first to notice the angry man, but he quickly looked away, as if it had nothing to do with him. I could tell he was trying to stay focused on tonight, our date, the most important thing for him right now. He had been waiting for this moment for months, and I knew how much effort he had put into making it happen. At first, I thought he had moved on from whatever had caught his attention, but then I noticed his expression change again. His eyes darted toward someone approaching our table. My heart skipped a beat when I realized the man was heading straight for us."Jamie?" I called, noticing how distracted he suddenly looked. "Is something wrong?"He blinked and turned to me, forcing a smile. "Nothing, I was just wondering…""Wondering what?" Genevieve’s POV“I’m here for tonight, which means I can watch over Jasper,” she said.“No,” I shook my head firmly. “I feel it’s a waste of time. Why start a friendship when it wouldn’t lead anywhere?”“Oh, sweetheart.” Lara reached for my hands, giving them a gentle squeeze.“I know you’re really avoiding falling in love again, but don’t deprive yourself of the good things life has to offer.”I bit my lip, but she continued, her voice soft yet insistent. “Not only do you deserve a good relationship, my dear. You also deserve good friendships too.”“You don’t understand me, Lara,” I replied, exhaling sharply. “I really don’t want to lead anyone on.”She shook her head. “You’re leading no one on. You obviously need a break from being a mom and work, so you’re going on the date.”“No…” I protested, shaking my head again, but she wasn’t letting up.“Why are you scared? What’s the worst thing that can happen?”I shrugged. “I just… I don’t want to do this.”“Let’s get you all dressed up,”

Genevieve’s povLittle Jasper stood still, his big brown eyes full of curiosity. "Mommy, who’s Alex?" he asked again. I stood and couldn’t move and my heart skipped a beat. How had he picked up on that name? Quickly, I forced a smile and knelt down to his level. “Honey, you shouldn’t interrupt when adults are talking.”“I’m sorry, Mama,” Jasper said softly, his lower lip trembling. “But I really want to know who Alex is.” His head tilted as he gave me a look of pure innocence, but his words sent a ripple of panic through me. Before I could find the right words, my sister Lara jumped in, her amused smile breaking the tension. “Why do you want to know, sweetie?”Jasper turned to Lara, his wide eyes full of honesty. “Because Mommy kept saying his name in the car. She sounded mad. And she said his name just now too.”Lara raised an eyebrow, glancing at me. Meanwhile, Jasper, oblivious to the weight of his words, added, “I think Alex made Mommy mad.”I let out a shaky laugh, hoping to brus

Was it that obvious? Maybe he hadn’t seen me like this before, or perhaps he could sense something wasn’t right. Children had a way of picking up on emotions we thought we could hide. But I couldn’t let him worry. I needed to pretend everything was fine. I forced a small smile. I looked down at him, his big, innocent eyes watching me carefully. "I'm not sad, my love." I smiled, brushing his messy curls away from his forehead."It's not good to tell lies, Mommy," he said seriously, crossing his little arms and frowning like he was scolding me. His attempt at being stern almost made me laugh.I chuckled softly. "Why would I be sad, sweetheart? I have you. You're my sunshine."Jasper tilted his head to the side, his little shoulders shrugging.
