Alex’s pov
I clenched my fists as Greg's words rang in my ears.
"She's not the one at fault, Alex. Do you need me to remind you? You basically chased her out of your life with all the cruelty from you and your family."
I swallowed hard, my jaw tightening. I hated being reminded of that.
"I'm well aware, and I'm sorry. You don’t have to throw it in my face," I muttered.
"Then you should know this is a bad strategy."
I exhaled sharply, shaking my head. "I'm still going to do what I want."
Greg scoffed. "So you don’t actually want her back? I thought you did."
I hesitated. The truth was, I didn’t know what I wanted anymore.
"But I know one thing," I said, leaning forward. "She won’t have a choice. She’ll have to deal with me again, whether she likes it or not. And then… I’ll decide if I even want her back."
Greg’s eyes darkened. "You always do this, Alex. You make reckless decisions, thinking you’re in control. And in the end, you ruin everything—even when you mean well."
I smirked, but we both knew it was a mask. "I always get what I want, Greg. You know that."
"Do you?" He arched his brow. "Because from where I’m standing, you look lost."
A muscle in my jaw twitched, but before I could respond, my phone buzzed. I glanced at the screen, lips pressing into a thin line.
"I can come over if you need help," Greg offered, his tone softening. "Maybe she’ll talk to me."
I shook my head. "No, I’ve got this."
Greg sighed. "Just don’t do anything stupid, please."
"Where are you?" I asked, changing the subject.
"In the car, at the parking lot," he said. "I think I’ll go to the club. Get drunk. Find some bitches to help me forget this mess."
My grip on the phone tightened. "If you actually want Genevieve back, whoring around should be off your agenda."
Greg let out a short laugh. "You’re one to talk." I rolled my eyes, even though he couldn’t see me.
"I mean it, Alex."
I exhaled. "You know the only thing that calms me when I'm tense. Besides, why should I care what she thinks when she clearly doesn’t give a damn about me?"
Greg sighed. "I’ll always have your back, but think before you act. If you push her too hard, you might lose her forever."
I didn’t answer. I just stared at the wall, lost in thought. Deep down, a voice whispered that maybe I had already lost her. But I wasn’t ready to admit it.

Genevieve’s pov
Once the ‘stranger’ left, the bodyguards followed, leaving an awkward silence between Jamie and me. I kept my eyes down, staring at my hands, while Jamie sat there, brooding. I could feel his frustration. The whole night had been going so well, and then, just like that it was ruined. He had put so much effort into this evening, and now he was probably thinking of a way to salvage it.
"You wanna get out of here?" he asked. I nodded without looking up. Jamie called the waiter over, paid for everything, including the food we never got to eat, then turned to me. "Let's go."
Still avoiding his gaze, I stood, picked up my purse, and walked out of the restaurant. I knew he was right behind me; I could feel his presence like a shadow. Outside, the valet brought my car to the front, but before I could get in, Jamie said, "Get in. I'll drive." I didn’t argue. I just obeyed.
We rode in silence. I expected him to ask for my address, but he never did. After a while, I stopped wondering where he was taking me and just let myself enjoy the quiet. The city lights blurred past as I stared out the window, lost in thought.
When the car finally stopped, I looked up. We were in a lively part of town, right next to a night market and a small park. The place was buzzing with people, laughter, and the smell of street food.
"Let’s see how this goes," Jamie said, unbuckling his seatbelt. He stepped out, walked over to my side, and opened the door for me.
"Don’t you think I’m overdressed for this?" I asked as I stepped out.
"It doesn’t matter. I promise." He smiled. I hesitated, then nodded.
He held out his hand, and after a moment, I took it. Our fingers intertwined naturally as we walked into the night market. I relaxed when I noticed other couples in formal wear, just like us.
"Told you," Jamie whispered, making me chuckle.
We strolled through the market, stopping at different stalls, tasting food, and soaking in the energy of the place. Jamie insisted I try his favorite street food. I had never been a fan of street food, but I was hungry, and he was so enthusiastic about it that I gave in. We sat on a bench in the park, eating in comfortable silence.
"Well?" he asked once I finished.
"Yummy and filling," I admitted. "I never thought street food could taste this good."
He chuckled. "I’m glad you liked it." A pause. Then, hesitantly, I said, "About tonight…"
"You don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want to," he interrupted gently. "I just want you to know that I don’t think any less of you."
I shook my head. "No, I have to. You put so much effort into tonight, and then that… that narcissist ruined it."
"Yeah, I won’t lie, I’m pissed. But I know it wasn’t your fault."
"He’s insane. I don’t even know him."
Jamie gave me a look. "You brought Jasper to work last week. And now, seeing this guy…"
I stiffened. Right. The resemblance. Anyone who had seen both of them would have noticed.
"I’m sorry for the things he said about you," Jamie continued. "Don’t take them to heart. He was wrong." I swallowed hard.
"You’re an amazing woman, Genevieve. Any man would be an idiot to let you go."
I felt a lump form in my throat, but before I could say anything, Jamie continued, "I saw the look in his eyes. Regret. Sadness. But he’s too proud to admit it. I think he still wants you, and seeing you on a date with me drove him mad."
"Want me?" I scoffed. "No way."
"He does," Jamie insisted. "But his ego won’t let him say it."
I wasn’t convinced, but Jamie wasn’t done. He reached for my hands, wrapping them in his warm grip. The touch made me finally look up and meet his gaze.
"I’m into you, Genevieve," he said, voice steady and certain. "I see the way he looks at you. It’s the same way I do. I get jealous when I see you with other guys at the office, even when I know it’s just work. If he still has feelings for you, of course, he’d lose his mind seeing you with me."
I held my breath.
"He had you and let you go. That was his mistake. Now, if he wants you back, he’s going to have to deal with me." His fingers tightened slightly around mine.
"If I can’t have you," he murmured, "then no one, not even him will."
I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Then Lara burst into laughter, her eyes full of amusement."Oh my God, really?!" she giggled, shaking her head. I sighed and poured more white wine into my glass, trying to process everything. We were both in our nightdresses, stretched out on the couch in the living room, the dim light making everything feel warm and cozy."Just when I thought you were the boring one! Damn, girl, you've got some real drama going on!"I rolled my eyes. "Drama? Please, Lara, stop teasing me.""Babe, I'm serious. And I’m so glad I pushed you to go on that date. So, tell me, what did you say to Jamie when he said he was ready to fight for you?"I let out a deep sigh. "I was speechless. I didn’t know what to say or do. For a second, I thought he was joking. But then I saw his face… he meant every word.""See, that’s why I swore never to go on dates again. Too much drama!" Lara teased, shaking her head."No, don’t say that." She always jumped to conclusions. "I don’t
Genevieve's pov It was Friday, precisely 3:30 p.m., I walked into Alex’s office while he was busy typing on his laptop. The sound of my knock broke through the quiet hum of the room. “Come in,” he said, his eyes still glued to the screen. I stepped inside and gently closed the door behind me. “Still working?” I asked with a small smile, my voice teasing. He finally looked up, his face lighting up as he saw me. “Yeah, trying to wrap up this report,” he replied. “But I’m glad you’re here.” I walked over and sat on the visitor’s chair across from him, unable to take my eyes off the effortlessly charming man in front of me. He looked so… perfect. “You know I’ve told you not to sit there,” Alex said firmly, his tone leaving no room for argument. “Come here!” “Someone might walk in,” I whispered nervously, glancing at the closed door. “That’s my problem to handle,” he said with a smirk, gesturing toward himself. “Come to big daddy.” I felt my cheeks heat up at his w
Genevieve's POV Six Weeks Later: I rested my hand on my stomach, staring at the test strip again. Positive. My heart raced as I caught a glimpse of myself in the bathroom mirror. A shy smile crept onto my face, but it wasn’t just joy, it was nerves too. I was pregnant. Today was supposed to be special. I couldn’t wait to share this news with Alex, the man I loved. I imagined how tightly he would hold me when I told him. This would be the day he would finally announce our engagement to everyone, ending the secrecy of our office romance. I was tired of hiding. As I left the bathroom, I glanced down at my engagement ring. For the first time, I felt brave enough to wear it outside my home. Alex Woods was more than my boss; he was the heir to Woods Corporation, a massive empire known for tech, luxury hotels, and real estate. I arrived at the office and greeted Laura, the receptionist, with a smile before heading to my desk. But my excitement was short-lived. I decided to grab tea fr
Genevieve’s POV Six Years Later I smiled as I stepped into my son’s room. My heart swelled with joy as I watched my little angel sleeping peacefully. Quietly, I shut the door and walked to his bed, sitting beside him. His tiny, perfect face made me melt every time. “My love,” I whispered, brushing my fingers gently over his cheek. “Jasper, darling.” I gave him a soft shake. “Mmm...” he groaned, squeezing his eyes shut. I chuckled. “You’ll be late for school,” I said. “Five more minutes,” he mumbled, burrowing under the covers. I laughed quietly. He was never a morning person, no matter how early he went to bed. “What if I drive you to school today?” I teased. His eyes flew open. “Really, Mama?” I nodded. “Gloria’s off today, so I’ll drop you off and pick you up too.” His face lit up. “Yay!” He jumped up and threw his little arms around me. “Good morning, Mama,” he said sweetly. “Good morning, my love.” I kissed his forehead. “Did you sleep well?” He nodded, grinning. “I h
Genevieve’s povHis face was a ghost from my past, sharp and familiar, a face that once brought comfort but now left me breathless. The chiseled jaw, the neatly trimmed mustache, the dark, beautiful eyes. God, those eyes. They were unmistakable. The same ones I had gazed into with so much love years ago. The same ones I saw every morning in the little angel I dropped off at school. I didn’t know how long I stared, My mind was caught in a storm of disbelief and dread. My heart ached, a deep, sharp pain that rippled through me. What the hell was he doing here? And then it hit me. Could he be... the client?“No.” The word slipped out of me, a desperate whisper. I shook my head, trying to take the possibility away. This wasn’t real. It couldn’t be. His mouth quivered as if he was about to speak, and that’s when I snapped out of my daze.“Ge... Genevieve?” he finally said, he too was shocked, not planning to see me just the same way I wasn’t planning to meet him.“Sorry?” I managed to spea
Alex’s povMy heart raced as soon as I saw her. Genie was walking away from me, her steps hurried, her figure retreating toward the café’s exit. Just like that day, years ago. My breathing went up, and my mouth went dry. I wanted to call out to her, to tell her to stop, but no words came. Instead, I stood there like a fool, watching her hair sway behind her with every step. Her hair… It wasn’t the same. The sleek, golden-brown strands I used to love running my fingers through had been replaced by darker, waiver locks. It suited her, of course it did, but the change clawed at something inside me, like a reminder that too much time had passed. Still, I would’ve recognized her anywhere. Even with her back to me, I knew her. By the time I snapped out of my daze, she was gone. Disappeared into the crowd, leaving behind nothing but a faint trace of her perfume that made my throat ache with regret.I sank into my chair, my hand fumbling for my phone. Scrolling aggressively through my contact
Alex’s povI’m used to getting what I want. I always have things just fall into place for me, like the world bends to my will. So, when I saw her walk back into the room, that familiar smile played on my lips. I assumed she was here to apologize, to make things right between us. But as she passed me, that smile quickly faded. She didn’t stop. She didn’t come to me. Instead, she went straight to the table where that other guy was sitting. They shook hands, exchanged a few words, and then sat down together.Something twisted in my chest, something sour and unfamiliar. Jealousy, maybe? It made me angry in a way I couldn’t quite control. I clenched my fist, trying to hold back the urge to storm over to them, to interrupt whatever the hell they were talking about. But how was I supposed to do that? I couldn’t figure out how to act in this situation. So I stayed where I was, watching them. She kept laughing at whatever he said, her eyes lighting up in a way that made me want to rip him apar
Genevieve’s povWhat a jerk.” Edward muttered under his breath, his eyes narrowing in frustration.“Are you okay?” He rushed to my side, his face was full of concern.“Y-yeah, I’m fine,” I replied, my voice very unsteady. “I’m sorry you had to witness all that.”“You shouldn’t apologize. Are you sure you’re okay? That man seemed... dangerous.”“I’ll be fine,” I lied, forcing a weak smile. “Thank you for stepping in. He’s just, he mistook me for someone else.”Edward frowned, unconvinced. “Mistook you? That didn’t seem like a simple misunderstanding. You should think about filing a police report.”“I’ll consider it,” I replied.“Please do. You never know what people like him are capable of. Just promise me you’ll stay safe.”“I will. And I’m sorry again for all the trouble.”Edward gave me a small, reassuring nod. “Don’t apologize. I’ll be waiting for a response from your company.”“You’ll have it by tomorrow,” I assured him.We stepped out of the café together, and his driver was alre

Alex’s povI clenched my fists as I watched the man with Genevieve rise to his feet. He ignored her attempt to hold him back and grabbed the stranger by the collar of his shirt, his jaw tight with anger. He looked like he wanted to strangle the guy right then and there, completely ignoring the people watching."Get the hell away from me!" he growled through gritted teeth. Clearly, he didn’t want to make a scene, but his anger was getting the best of him.The stranger didn’t back down. "You seem to have no manners, and I think you need to learn some. If the mother offended you, then go after her, not the innocent child."His words hit me harder than I expected."Let me burst your bubble. That little girl is nothing but amazing. Anyone who doesn’t know her is missing out.""We’ve had enough of you. Get out!" the man with Genevieve snapped. Before Genevieve could say anything, I saw two large men approaching. Even though I didn’t know them, I had a good idea of who they might be."We’ll
Genevieve’s povJamie was the first to notice the angry man, but he quickly looked away, as if it had nothing to do with him. I could tell he was trying to stay focused on tonight, our date, the most important thing for him right now. He had been waiting for this moment for months, and I knew how much effort he had put into making it happen. At first, I thought he had moved on from whatever had caught his attention, but then I noticed his expression change again. His eyes darted toward someone approaching our table. My heart skipped a beat when I realized the man was heading straight for us."Jamie?" I called, noticing how distracted he suddenly looked. "Is something wrong?"He blinked and turned to me, forcing a smile. "Nothing, I was just wondering…""Wondering what?" I asked, tilting my head slightly."How it would feel to have you as my woman."I felt warmth rush to my cheeks, but I quickly covered it with a smirk. "I wouldn’t keep my hopes up if I were you.""So, you’re pushing m
Genevieve’s POV“I’m here for tonight, which means I can watch over Jasper,” she said.“No,” I shook my head firmly. “I feel it’s a waste of time. Why start a friendship when it wouldn’t lead anywhere?”“Oh, sweetheart.” Lara reached for my hands, giving them a gentle squeeze.“I know you’re really avoiding falling in love again, but don’t deprive yourself of the good things life has to offer.”I bit my lip, but she continued, her voice soft yet insistent. “Not only do you deserve a good relationship, my dear. You also deserve good friendships too.”“You don’t understand me, Lara,” I replied, exhaling sharply. “I really don’t want to lead anyone on.”She shook her head. “You’re leading no one on. You obviously need a break from being a mom and work, so you’re going on the date.”“No…” I protested, shaking my head again, but she wasn’t letting up.“Why are you scared? What’s the worst thing that can happen?”I shrugged. “I just… I don’t want to do this.”“Let’s get you all dressed up,”
Genevieve’s povLittle Jasper stood still, his big brown eyes full of curiosity. "Mommy, who’s Alex?" he asked again. I stood and couldn’t move and my heart skipped a beat. How had he picked up on that name? Quickly, I forced a smile and knelt down to his level. “Honey, you shouldn’t interrupt when adults are talking.”“I’m sorry, Mama,” Jasper said softly, his lower lip trembling. “But I really want to know who Alex is.” His head tilted as he gave me a look of pure innocence, but his words sent a ripple of panic through me. Before I could find the right words, my sister Lara jumped in, her amused smile breaking the tension. “Why do you want to know, sweetie?”Jasper turned to Lara, his wide eyes full of honesty. “Because Mommy kept saying his name in the car. She sounded mad. And she said his name just now too.”Lara raised an eyebrow, glancing at me. Meanwhile, Jasper, oblivious to the weight of his words, added, “I think Alex made Mommy mad.”I let out a shaky laugh, hoping to brus
Genevieve’s povSurprisingly, Jasper walked up to me again, his big, curious eyes scanning my face. “What’s wrong, Mommy? You look sad,” he asked softly. His words caught me off guard. Was it that obvious? Maybe he hadn’t seen me like this before, or perhaps he could sense something wasn’t right. Children had a way of picking up on emotions we thought we could hide. But I couldn’t let him worry. I needed to pretend everything was fine. I forced a small smile. I looked down at him, his big, innocent eyes watching me carefully. "I'm not sad, my love." I smiled, brushing his messy curls away from his forehead."It's not good to tell lies, Mommy," he said seriously, crossing his little arms and frowning like he was scolding me. His attempt at being stern almost made me laugh.I chuckled softly. "Why would I be sad, sweetheart? I have you. You're my sunshine."Jasper tilted his head to the side, his little shoulders shrugging. "I don't know. But someone made you sad. I just know it.""I'm
Alex’s povI’ve never been one to show emotions or weakness. I always prided myself on staying calm, on keeping a clear head no matter what. But right now, I couldn’t breathe. My chest felt tight, as though my heart had shattered into a thousand pieces, and I didn’t even understand why. What is happening to me? Why did it hurt so much?I dropped onto the couch like my legs couldn’t hold me anymore, burying my face in my hands. What the hell was going on with me? Why did seeing her again... hearing about her life now... cut so deep? I tried to pull myself together, but the pain wouldn’t go away. It sat there, heavy and suffocating. After a few minutes, I forced myself to move. I picked up my phone and opened the email from Drew, the investigator I’d hired to track her down. His report was thorough. Too thorough. Her name stared back at me: Genevieve "Genevieve" Hart. Five years. That’s how old her son, Jasper, was. I’d read those details a dozen times already, but I kept going back to
