Chapter 5

The moment I opened the door, I was greeted by Mrs. Sinclair's excited gaze. Before Mr. Sinclair could even stop her, she rushed right up to me. "You're finally willing to see me, Aria!"

In stark comparison, I was completely unmoved. Cooly brushing her hand off me, I turned to look at my teacher, Mrs. Grant, and the principal. "Ma'am, isn't school off-limits to anyone other than staff and family?"

Mrs. Grant was surprised by what I said and turned to look at the Sinclairs in disbelief. "Wait, but aren't they…"

"No." I shut him down before he could even finish the question. "I don't have any parents, and I've always been all by myself. If they want to say they're my parents, don't they have to give me proof? Show me my birth certificate or a DNA test, or even tell us if I've got any birthmarks… Heck, at this point, they could at least show some proof of having spent money on me.

"Mrs. Sinclair, can you do that?"

Mrs. Sinclair's face was pale as ash, and she couldn't utter a word.
