~Joan~

A few days had passed since I spent an extra day at Aaron's house, waiting for the storm to pass.

Once it was over, I returned home, trying to move on with life as if nothing had happened—pretending I hadn’t received a text that had almost wrecked me completely.

Aaron hadn’t said much about the text either. He never brought it up, only occasionally asking if I’d received another one from whoever sent it. The answer was always no.

I hadn’t received anything else since, and I couldn’t help but wonder why someone would send a message like that, then vanish without a trace.

Now, sitting cross-legged on my couch with my laptop in front of me, I tried to focus on my writing. My book was coming along, and I felt like I’d reached a decent pace.

The sound of the door opening brought me back to reality. Indie walked in, balancing a bag of groceries in her arms, her skeptical gaze locking onto me.

“Hi,” I said with a small smile, brushing a stray strand of hair behind my ear.

She gave a

~Joan~“That's the CEO,” Indie whispered and I drew my eyes away from Aaron's retreating form as he entered the elevator with the men.It wasn't a coincidence that Indie was having her interview at Aaron's company. What the fuck?“Yeah, that's… ” I trailed off as she nudged me and instantly perked up, straightening in her seat.“Okay. He's staring at us,” she said and my heart skipped a beat as I shot a glance at the elevator. My eyes met with Aaron's before the doors slid shut.Wow.Indie and I held conversations with the ladies sitting next to us, just to while away the time. A few minutes later, we were asked to vacate the reception and move to the floor upstairs. As the candidates moved into the elevator, I hesitated.I wasn't here for an interview so following them around wasn't exactly ideal.“I'll just hang around,” I whispered to Indie as she walked towards the elevator.“Okay. Wish me luck,” she gave a short smile as she stepped into the car. “Give me a call once you're done

  • My Best Friend's Brother    Jealous, Mr. Thompson

~Joan~My heart thudded in my chest as I perched on the edge of his desk. Aaron raised a brow at me, his hands sliding up my thighs to part my legs, muttering something I couldn’t quite hear under his breath. The pencil skirt I’d worn didn’t make it easy for him, but somehow, he still managed to bunch it up to my thighs until my panties were fully exposed. The cool air hit my skin, making me shiver as heat spread through my body like a slow burn.I planted my hands firmly on the desk to steady myself, my eyes flickering toward the door. My tongue darted out to wet my lips nervously.“Aaron, I don’t think we should do this. Anyone could walk in,” I muttered, my voice quiet. He didn’t look fazed, his hooded eyes meeting mine as his hand slid beneath my skirt and shifted my panties to the side.“No one walks into my office without permission,” he said, his tone calm and assured. “And just so you feel better, the door’s locked.” My lips parted slightly as his fingers traced over my entran

~Joan~I clenched my teeth as Denzel's eyes followed Joan's swaying hips. She was doing it on purpose, probably to piss me off. Well… she'd pay for it later, but not now. Now, I needed my assistant to stop gawking at her like a lovesick puppy.I paused. Joan was my girl. Girl? The thought hit me hard. I was being possessive, no doubt about it, but the idea of her cozying up to some other guy whenever our deal was off, sparked something raw in me. Something I wasn’t ready to name.I didn’t know what to do about it, so I let it slide for now. It’d resolve itself when the time came.“Oh my God, she’s pretty,” Denzel muttered, his gaze reluctantly shifting back to me. “Really—” He stopped mid-sentence when he caught my expression. Whatever he saw there got the message across loud and clear. He cleared his throat awkwardly. Good.“Had no idea she’s yours,” he mumbled before crashing into the chair opposite me. I raised a brow, watching him.Okay. My relationship with Denzel had shifted. Wh

  • My Best Friend's Brother    I hate Aaron

~Joan~“What the hell? He actually said that?” I asked, watching Rhoda shrug as she popped a strawberry into her mouth.“You get it, right? Told him to fuck off,” she said. Even though I was a little annoyed, I couldn’t help but smile.I trusted Rhoda to handle Aaron, at least on the phone if not in person. There was no way her birthday party would happen without me being there—Aaron knew that. And yet, what did he do? He asked her to blacklist me. Unbelievable. Especially when I thought Aaron and I were finally getting along.“So, what do we do?” I asked, folding my legs underneath me on the couch. Rhoda had stopped by right after my shift, and I could tell she planned to stay the night. Honestly, I was glad. I’d missed my best friend more than I cared to admit.“I don’t know. Use a club?” she muttered, then looked up at me. Our eyes locked, and a silent conversation passed between us before we both burst out laughing.“No way,” I said, shaking my head. “Not after what happened in Sp

  • My Best Friend's Brother    Game On, Thompson

~Joan~I'd taken a few days off from work to help Rhoda plan her birthday party. When I wasn't planning, I was writing. Shayne had reached out to me a couple of times to ask how the manuscript was coming along. She was the best editor—when she wasn’t micromanaging me. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen often.Rhoda had gone all out with the decorations, as if she'd forgotten it was Aaron's house she was using. Speaking of Aaron, he’d given her a second chance to host the party and, surprisingly, hadn’t made an issue about me attending. But then again, Aaron wasn’t a man who repeated himself. If he said something once, he meant it.“You think this makeup suits my skin tone?” Rhoda asked as we sat in the salon. The makeup artist was applying finishing touches, her brow slightly furrowed as if she were silently judging Rhoda's doubt.I glanced up from my phone, taking in her face. “It’s perfect. The color really works for your skin tone,” I said, flashing a brief smile at the makeup artis

~Joan~I stayed seated, making little conversation with Matthew, even though the awkwardness between us was palpable. I took the plastic cup from Matthew, taking a sip without a clue what it held. The burn that followed told me it was scotch. Unexpected but impressive.“So... when are you going back to work?” Matthew asked, leaning closer until our thighs touched. The closeness made my chest tighten with unease, but I tried to act normal and shrugged.“Next week, maybe? I’ve been thinking of quitting, though. I can’t stay at the café forever,” I muttered, downing the drink in one go. A sharp pain flared in my lower stomach, making me grimace and shift uncomfortably in my seat.Matthew didn’t seem to notice my discomfort. “Oh? Where are you thinking of working?” he asked, his tone carrying an edge I couldn’t quite place. Was it the scotch, or had his voice always sounded that dark?I licked my lips, feeling his eyes dart to them instantly. “I don’t know yet,” I started to say, but the

~Joan~“You disappeared! I couldn't find you anywhere,” Rhoda said and I sighed, lying on my side and automatically cuddling my pillow. “Had to return home early, I got my period,” I muttered and she gasped. “Oh my God, Jo. I'm sorry I wasn't there to help,” her voice sounded a bit muffled through the line and I closed my eyes. “Yeah, it's all good. Your brother let me use his bathroom.. Good of him,” I said, keeping out the remaining details. He'd carried me, ran a bath for me, let me wear his shirt and drove me home. He was sweet, when he wasn't acting like he had a stick up his ass.“Oh. That's nice of him,” Rhoda said, but she sounded quite odd. “Should I come over?” she asked and I shook my head. The last thing I wanted was details of how she and her boyfriend had sex. At least not now. “Nope. You stay with Lucas, I'll be fine,” I muttered, just as a knock came on my door. I groaned. I honestly don't want to leave my bed right now. I'd been sleeping ever since I returned

This fucking hurt. She thought I had some ulterior motive, like I was trying to win points or manipulate her, when all I wanted was to make her life a little easier.Over the years, I’d overheard Rhoda mention Joan’s painful periods. Sometimes, Rhoda would spend the entire week with her just to make sure she was okay. Now Rhoda was busy enjoying herself with her boyfriend, so I thought I could step in and help out. And what did Joan do? She accused me of having an agenda.Who the hell does that?I pressed harder on the gas, the car almost leaping off the road. My phone rang again, the same way it had been ringing nonstop since I stormed out of Joan’s apartment. No way was she calling to apologize. Joan never admits she’s wrong, and that was exactly why I ignored it.If it was Denzel, he’d just have to wait. The phone kept buzzing. With a groan, I pulled over, ready to snap at whoever it

  • My Best Friend's Brother    Whatever We Make

♡Joan♡ Note: If you like reading with music, try Meryl Streep’s "The Winner Takes It All." It’s even better with headphones. Enjoy! 😊🤭 We left for Spain—not to visit Luna, but for a change of scenery. After a month of therapy, we were in a much better place. Healing wasn’t instant, but we were making progress. I stepped into the living room, taking in my surroundings while Aaron pulled our bags in behind me. It looked both familiar and strange at the same time, like a place I knew but hadn't seen in years. A small smile tugged at my lips. To think this was where it all began—months ago, maybe even a year. I walked over to the window where we’d first made love, my fingers brushing the glass. My scratches were still there. That surprised me. I half-expected Aaron to have changed the window, given his obsession with order. The fact that he hadn’t? Well, that made my heart do a little flip. "Got any memories there?" His deep voice came from behind me. I glanced at him over my

  • My Best Friend's Brother    Therapy

♤Aaron♤The doctor discharged us a couple of days later and suggested we go to therapy—to help us cope with losing the baby.He had no idea how much Joan needed it. She’d seen someone die right in front of her, been caught in a shooting spree, lost our child, and seen me covered in blood. Even though she wasn’t saying much, I knew it had left scars on her.I promised myself I’d go with her to every session. That’s why I was opening the car door for her, helping her in before getting into the driver’s seat and pulling out of our compound. It was our first meeting with the therapist. She stayed quiet, staring out of the window like she wasn’t really seeing anything. It had been happening a lot.A tight feeling grew in my chest, and my grip on the steering wheel hardened."Hey. You good?" I asked. She turned to me, her eyes dull, missing the usual spark. She pressed her lips together and nodded. "Yeah, I'm fine," she muttered, looking away.My jaw tensed. The rest of the ride passed in

  • My Best Friend's Brother    Two Babies?

♡Joan♡ I had no idea how much time had passed, but when I opened my eyes, someone was sitting next to me. Shoulders hunched, head bowed, my hand in his—and he was bloody. Damn bloody, all over. I swallowed hard, my throat dry and parched. “Aaron,” I whispered, and his eyes snapped up to meet mine almost immediately. They were bloodshot. I didn’t need anyone to tell me why. My own eyes itched and burned as I pressed my lips together to hide the tremble. “We lost the baby, didn’t we?” I asked quietly, as a tear slipped from the corner of my eye. I stared up at the ceiling. “It’s my fault. It’s all my fault. If I’d maybe listened to you and—” “It’s not your fault,” he cut in. His voice sounded cold, detached—very unlike Aaron. In the four years I’ve known him, he’s never sounded this... broken. I don’t know. I glanced at him. His jaw was clenched tight. My eyes traveled down his body where he sat. His shirt was soaked in blood. How badly had they hurt him? Why wasn’t he being

  • My Best Friend's Brother    It's Gone

♡Joan♡ He got me to the car, opened the door, and helped me in. His shirt was stained, and since it was a lighter grey color, the blood was obvious. Ironic, that we were both bleeding, both capable to take lives. He tucked a strand of hair behind my ear, his palm resting against my cheek as he locked eyes with me. “You’ll be fine. The baby will be fine too,” he said softly, and a tear slipped from my eye. Another followed, until I was crying again. I didn’t want to lose our baby. What kind of mother does that make me, if I can’t even protect my child? “What if—” “Shush,” Aaron interrupted, his throat bobbing as he swallowed hard. “I’m going back in there to finish this, okay? If I’m not out in five minutes, press this button.” He pointed to a button just beneath the steering wheel. “The car will automatically drive you wherever you need to go once you input your location in the GPS,” he added, but I shook my head. He looked away, quickly typed an address into the GPS, then tu

  • My Best Friend's Brother    Almost Out

♤Aaron♤ A gunshot cracked through the air. Missed. I spun around, heart pounding—where the hell did that come from? My eyes snapped back to Joan. She closed her eyes, and I lost it. I pressed the trigger, hitting the leg of the bastard holding her. His groan echoed as he collapsed to one knee. His crew flinched, but my men stepped forward, guns raised and ready. One wrong move, and they’d all be dead. Hell, they’re dead already for even laying a hand on her. And if anything happened to her or our baby… God help them. I shoved my gun into the back of my jeans and crossed the distance in seconds, catching her in my arms before the man could drop her like garbage. She felt a little heavy, too still. My chest tightened. I hated this feeling. The last time I felt this helpless was when she slipped into that coma. And now? If she slipped away from me… if I lost her or the baby… I wouldn’t survive it. Killing these bastards wouldn’t be enough. I’d want them to drown in their own bl

  • My Best Friend's Brother    The Baby

♡Joan♡ He starved me—true to his words. I didn’t know how long I’d been here, tied and aching. It must be the early hours of the morning by now. Aaron had to know I was missing. He’d be searching, but how would he ever find me? I didn’t even know where I was. My wrists burned from the rope chafing my skin, my head throbbed, and my eyes felt too heavy to keep open. God, I wanted to sleep. I longed to be safe in Aaron’s arms, but closing my eyes here felt like asking for death. The room was quiet, for now. But if I dared to fall asleep, who knew what could happen? I shifted slightly and glanced at the man hanging upside down across from me. There was barely any life left in him. How long had he been like this, tortured and tied up? I didn’t care—but part of me was curious. After all, this was the first time I’d met my father. “How long have you been here?” I asked, my voice quiet. He didn’t answer. For a moment, I thought he was already dead. My stomach twisted at the thought of

♤Aaron♤ "What's the plan?" Denzel asked, rubbing his chin. I paced the small room, scanning the men inside. Not just any men—these were hulking, sharp-minded, and intimidating figures. Their expressions alone could send shivers down anyone’s spine, enough to make a grown man hesitate and women step back in fear. And that's why they were my best and top. "Any update, Jason?" I turned to the man seated at the far end. He was calm, his fingers gliding across his laptop’s keyboard as he scanned through data. He barely lifted his eyes before responding. "I hacked into every CCTV camera in town, but it’ll take a while to sift through the footage and pinpoint her exact location," he said. I ran a hand through my hair, exhaling sharply. Time was the one thing I didn’t have. The longer this dragged on, the worse it could get for her. "Start with the cameras near her last known location," Denzel suggested, his voice steady but urgent. Jason pursed his lips, humming under his brea

Darkness greeted me first, making me doubt whether I had really opened my eyes.Had I gone blind overnight? Where was Aaron? Why was the whole house in darkness?I tried to call for him, but something was blocking my mouth. A gag. My eyes widened as memories slowly crept back, piece by piece.I was in danger. My baby was in danger. We had been taken.I wriggled my wrists, feeling sharp pain where the restraints cut into my skin. My hands were tied behind my back. That explained the ache.I jerked against the chair, trying to break free. My heart pounded wildly, each beat louder than the last. The more I struggled, the deeper the restraints bit into my skin. That would leave bruises."Don't. It'll only hurt you more," a man's voice broke through the darkness, and I froze. My breath hitched. Someone was here.In books and movies, captors usually walked
