~Joan~

“You disappeared! I couldn't find you anywhere,” Rhoda said and I sighed, lying on my side and automatically cuddling my pillow.

“Had to return home early, I got my period,” I muttered and she gasped.

“Oh my God, Jo. I'm sorry I wasn't there to help,” her voice sounded a bit muffled through the line and I closed my eyes.

“Yeah, it's all good. Your brother let me use his bathroom.. Good of him,” I said, keeping out the remaining details. He'd carried me, ran a bath for me, let me wear his shirt and drove me home.

He was sweet, when he wasn't acting like he had a stick up his ass.

“Oh. That's nice of him,” Rhoda said, but she sounded quite odd.

“Should I come over?” she asked and I shook my head. The last thing I wanted was details of how she and her boyfriend had sex.

At least not now.

“Nope. You stay with Lucas, I'll be fine,” I muttered, just as a knock came on my door. I groaned.

I honestly don't want to leave my bed right now. I'd been sleeping ever since I returned

~Aaron ~I was annoyed. That much was obvious.Joan always managed to get under my skin, but this? This fucking hurt. She thought I had some ulterior motive, like I was trying to win points or manipulate her, when all I wanted was to make her life a little easier.Over the years, I’d overheard Rhoda mention Joan’s painful periods. Sometimes, Rhoda would spend the entire week with her just to make sure she was okay. Now Rhoda was busy enjoying herself with her boyfriend, so I thought I could step in and help out. And what did Joan do? She accused me of having an agenda.Who the hell does that?I pressed harder on the gas, the car almost leaping off the road. My phone rang again, the same way it had been ringing nonstop since I stormed out of Joan’s apartment. No way was she calling to apologize. Joan never admits she’s wrong, and that was exactly why I ignored it.If it was Denzel, he’d just have to wait. The phone kept buzzing. With a groan, I pulled over, ready to snap at whoever it

  • My Best Friend's Brother    A Date

~Joan~I went back to work the following week after submitting my documents at an advertising company, hoping they’d call me soon. The coffee shop was busy as usual, the smell of fresh pastries and coffee lingering in the air.“Hey,” Matthew greeted as he came around the counter while I attended to a line of customers.“Hey. Help me out here, will you?” I shot him a glance before handing a paper bag to a customer, smiling politely as they left.Matthew scratched his hair, hesitating for a moment, before moving around the counter to stand next to me.“Uh, sure,” he said, grabbing a pen to take some orders. Together, we served customers in quick succession, the sounds of the register and muffled chatter filling the space, until we’d finally finished.“That was… thank you,” I said, giving him a brief smile before grabbing a towel to wipe my face. My back ached from standing since the beginning of my shift, and I could feel a dull throb forming in my temples. He gave a curt nod, his expres

~Joan~I listened to Matthew ramble on about his mother. His mother. Calling it boring felt like an understatement. I knew I’d regret this the second I agreed, and now, halfway through the date, I was wishing I could teleport back home.Has he always been this dull?“…She was really surprised that night. My siblings and I were happy we were able to do that for her,” he said, taking another sip of his drink. He’d brought me to a local Chinese restaurant, which was fine—if he’d bothered to ask if I even liked it here. His eyes flicked to my plate. The steak sat there untouched, glistening under the dim restaurant lights. I hadn’t had a chance to place my order. Matthew, in all his wisdom, had just assumed I was a steak lover.“You’re not eating,” he said, his tone unsure. I nodded, leaning my chin on my hand.“Well, I don’t really like steak,” I said flatly, watching as his face turned a faint shade of red. He shifted in his chair, suddenly looking like a kid caught breaking the rules.

~Joan~“Where are we going?” I asked as Aaron took a different route, one that didn’t lead to either of our houses.“It’ll ruin the surprise,” he said curtly. I raised a brow as he pressed harder on the accelerator, the hum of the car filling the silence.“I don’t like surprises,” I stated. He glanced at me, a flicker of amusement in his eyes, before speeding up again. The wind whipped my hair, tangling it into a mess. I should have tied it up.“Are you kidnapping me, Thompson?” I asked, a hint of humor in my voice. He smirked but said nothing. Resigned, I leaned back in my seat, watching the streets blur past.Matthew wasn’t thrilled when I told him I had to leave suddenly, claiming an emergency. He’d offered to come along, but I declined, knowing the last thing I needed was him crossing paths with Aaron. That was a suspicion I wasn’t ready to fuel.Aaron eventually pulled up in front of a gate flanked by high walls. I shifted uncomfortably as it slid open.A house came into view, an

~Joan~I’d never seen anything more sensual than a blindfolded woman swaying to a rhythm only she could hear.Joan’s hips moved in lazy, deliberate circles, her hands gliding down her body as if savoring every inch of herself. She turned slowly, her movements hypnotic, while I sat perched on the edge of my bed, hard as stone and completely captivated. The red dress she wore hugged every curve, a second skin that left little to the imagination. The thought of Matthew’s eyes raking over her creamy skin earlier sent fury rising in my chest. One strap slid off her shoulder, then the other, leaving the dress barely clinging to her chest. Her movements slowed, teasing me with the inevitability of the fabric’s fall. My eyes snapped to her face—those full lips parted slightly as her breathing quickened. Lips I wanted to taste. Lips that drove me insane whenever they opened to argue. Then, slowly, the dress slipped lower, revealing the perfect swell of her breasts. Firm, round, flawless. Min

~Joan~A moan slipped from my lips as I tangled my fingers in Aaron’s hair. There was no better way to wake up than with a man between your legs.I was sore. Last night had been the most action I’d had in three years. Aaron was a beast unleashed, taking me in ways I hadn’t even imagined—against the wall, on the bed, blindfolded. He’d left no stone unturned.Exactly why it surprised me to wake up with his head still buried between my legs, his mouth teasing the swollen bud of my desire. One of his large hands cupped my breast, rolling the sensitive nipple between his fingers as I arched into him. I was sore, but I didn’t care.“You’re so wet for me,” he murmured, his voice like gravel against my skin as he slid a finger inside me.His other hand pressed down firmly on my stomach, holding me in place as my hips bucked. His rhythm started slow and deliberate, every movement building the pressure until I broke apart beneath him. My body melted into the bed, trembling with release, as he r

~Unknown~ “Any updates on the man she’s seeing now?” I asked, exhaling a trail of smoke into the cold, heavy air. I crushed the cigarette under my heel, the ember dying with a faint hiss, before I turned back to face him. The man standing before me shifted uncomfortably. His brown hair clung damply to his forehead, either from sweat or the misty drizzle outside. I could see the faint tremor in his hands before he clenched them into fists, forcing himself to stand straighter. “He’s… uh, he’s kind of a big deal in the tech world,” he said, his voice betraying the fear he was trying to hide. “Runs a company. He’s loaded.” I said nothing, letting the silence drag out. My gaze flickered back to the window, the dark cityscape stretching before me. It was late, but the lights of the distant skyscrapers still blinked, like dying stars. “I don’t know if they’re officially dating,” he continued, as though my silence compelled him to fill the void. “But they spend a lot of time together. ~Joan~“Okay, good luck!” Rhoda said over the phone. I drew in a deep breath, a small smile creeping onto my face.“Thank you. I’ll drop by this evening,” I replied softly, and she made some kissy sounds before hanging up. I took a moment to check my appearance in the mirror.I wore a crisp white button-down and a black skirt, my hair tied back in a neat bun. A touch of makeup brought some color to my face, but not too much. I needed to look professional, and I hoped the nerves twisting in my stomach wouldn’t show.Grabbing my bag, I locked the door behind me and stepped outside, only to feel it again—the strange, creepy sensation that made the hairs on my arms stand on end. It sent goosebumps prickling across my skin.I froze. Someone was watching me.I glanced around, scanning the quiet street. Indie’s door was shut—she had traveled to Germany for some vague reason she’d mentioned last week—and my other neighbor had left early this morning. The street was empty.I shook off the feel

  • My Best Friend's Brother    Whatever We Make

♡Joan♡ Note: If you like reading with music, try Meryl Streep’s "The Winner Takes It All." It’s even better with headphones. Enjoy! 😊🤭 We left for Spain—not to visit Luna, but for a change of scenery. After a month of therapy, we were in a much better place. Healing wasn’t instant, but we were making progress. I stepped into the living room, taking in my surroundings while Aaron pulled our bags in behind me. It looked both familiar and strange at the same time, like a place I knew but hadn't seen in years. A small smile tugged at my lips. To think this was where it all began—months ago, maybe even a year. I walked over to the window where we’d first made love, my fingers brushing the glass. My scratches were still there. That surprised me. I half-expected Aaron to have changed the window, given his obsession with order. The fact that he hadn’t? Well, that made my heart do a little flip. "Got any memories there?" His deep voice came from behind me. I glanced at him over my

  • My Best Friend's Brother    Therapy

♤Aaron♤The doctor discharged us a couple of days later and suggested we go to therapy—to help us cope with losing the baby.He had no idea how much Joan needed it. She’d seen someone die right in front of her, been caught in a shooting spree, lost our child, and seen me covered in blood. Even though she wasn’t saying much, I knew it had left scars on her.I promised myself I’d go with her to every session. That’s why I was opening the car door for her, helping her in before getting into the driver’s seat and pulling out of our compound. It was our first meeting with the therapist. She stayed quiet, staring out of the window like she wasn’t really seeing anything. It had been happening a lot.A tight feeling grew in my chest, and my grip on the steering wheel hardened."Hey. You good?" I asked. She turned to me, her eyes dull, missing the usual spark. She pressed her lips together and nodded. "Yeah, I'm fine," she muttered, looking away.My jaw tensed. The rest of the ride passed in

  • My Best Friend's Brother    Two Babies?

♡Joan♡ I had no idea how much time had passed, but when I opened my eyes, someone was sitting next to me. Shoulders hunched, head bowed, my hand in his—and he was bloody. Damn bloody, all over. I swallowed hard, my throat dry and parched. “Aaron,” I whispered, and his eyes snapped up to meet mine almost immediately. They were bloodshot. I didn’t need anyone to tell me why. My own eyes itched and burned as I pressed my lips together to hide the tremble. “We lost the baby, didn’t we?” I asked quietly, as a tear slipped from the corner of my eye. I stared up at the ceiling. “It’s my fault. It’s all my fault. If I’d maybe listened to you and—” “It’s not your fault,” he cut in. His voice sounded cold, detached—very unlike Aaron. In the four years I’ve known him, he’s never sounded this... broken. I don’t know. I glanced at him. His jaw was clenched tight. My eyes traveled down his body where he sat. His shirt was soaked in blood. How badly had they hurt him? Why wasn’t he being

  • My Best Friend's Brother    It's Gone

♡Joan♡ He got me to the car, opened the door, and helped me in. His shirt was stained, and since it was a lighter grey color, the blood was obvious. Ironic, that we were both bleeding, both capable to take lives. He tucked a strand of hair behind my ear, his palm resting against my cheek as he locked eyes with me. “You’ll be fine. The baby will be fine too,” he said softly, and a tear slipped from my eye. Another followed, until I was crying again. I didn’t want to lose our baby. What kind of mother does that make me, if I can’t even protect my child? “What if—” “Shush,” Aaron interrupted, his throat bobbing as he swallowed hard. “I’m going back in there to finish this, okay? If I’m not out in five minutes, press this button.” He pointed to a button just beneath the steering wheel. “The car will automatically drive you wherever you need to go once you input your location in the GPS,” he added, but I shook my head. He looked away, quickly typed an address into the GPS, then tu

  • My Best Friend's Brother    Almost Out

♤Aaron♤ A gunshot cracked through the air. Missed. I spun around, heart pounding—where the hell did that come from? My eyes snapped back to Joan. She closed her eyes, and I lost it. I pressed the trigger, hitting the leg of the bastard holding her. His groan echoed as he collapsed to one knee. His crew flinched, but my men stepped forward, guns raised and ready. One wrong move, and they’d all be dead. Hell, they’re dead already for even laying a hand on her. And if anything happened to her or our baby… God help them. I shoved my gun into the back of my jeans and crossed the distance in seconds, catching her in my arms before the man could drop her like garbage. She felt a little heavy, too still. My chest tightened. I hated this feeling. The last time I felt this helpless was when she slipped into that coma. And now? If she slipped away from me… if I lost her or the baby… I wouldn’t survive it. Killing these bastards wouldn’t be enough. I’d want them to drown in their own bl

  • My Best Friend's Brother    The Baby

♡Joan♡ He starved me—true to his words. I didn’t know how long I’d been here, tied and aching. It must be the early hours of the morning by now. Aaron had to know I was missing. He’d be searching, but how would he ever find me? I didn’t even know where I was. My wrists burned from the rope chafing my skin, my head throbbed, and my eyes felt too heavy to keep open. God, I wanted to sleep. I longed to be safe in Aaron’s arms, but closing my eyes here felt like asking for death. The room was quiet, for now. But if I dared to fall asleep, who knew what could happen? I shifted slightly and glanced at the man hanging upside down across from me. There was barely any life left in him. How long had he been like this, tortured and tied up? I didn’t care—but part of me was curious. After all, this was the first time I’d met my father. “How long have you been here?” I asked, my voice quiet. He didn’t answer. For a moment, I thought he was already dead. My stomach twisted at the thought of

  • My Best Friend's Brother    Location

♤Aaron♤ "What's the plan?" Denzel asked, rubbing his chin. I paced the small room, scanning the men inside. Not just any men—these were hulking, sharp-minded, and intimidating figures. Their expressions alone could send shivers down anyone’s spine, enough to make a grown man hesitate and women step back in fear. And that's why they were my best and top. "Any update, Jason?" I turned to the man seated at the far end. He was calm, his fingers gliding across his laptop’s keyboard as he scanned through data. He barely lifted his eyes before responding. "I hacked into every CCTV camera in town, but it’ll take a while to sift through the footage and pinpoint her exact location," he said. I ran a hand through my hair, exhaling sharply. Time was the one thing I didn’t have. The longer this dragged on, the worse it could get for her. "Start with the cameras near her last known location," Denzel suggested, his voice steady but urgent. Jason pursed his lips, humming under his brea

♡Joan♡My head throbbed, my skull ached, and it felt like it would burst open if I moved. My eyelids were heavy, but I forced them open. Darkness greeted me first, making me doubt whether I had really opened my eyes.Had I gone blind overnight? Where was Aaron? Why was the whole house in darkness?I tried to call for him, but something was blocking my mouth. A gag. My eyes widened as memories slowly crept back, piece by piece.I was in danger. My baby was in danger. We had been taken.I wriggled my wrists, feeling sharp pain where the restraints cut into my skin. My hands were tied behind my back. That explained the ache.I jerked against the chair, trying to break free. My heart pounded wildly, each beat louder than the last. The more I struggled, the deeper the restraints bit into my skin. That would leave bruises."Don't. It'll only hurt you more," a man's voice broke through the darkness, and I froze. My breath hitched. Someone was here.In books and movies, captors usually walked
