Mira

Swirling around, I exhaled sharply, then I gripped the edge of the sink to keep me grounded.

“What’s amusing you?” His deep baritone echoed, causing my gaze to flicker and meet his eyes through the mirror.

“Huh?” I asked with a cracked voice, holding my breath so my laughter would look real.

I glanced at the door as my legs itched to move. Maybe if I run so fast, leave this place, and tell Lucius that I had attached the tracking device and it was too difficult for me to get any useful information from him, I would get back my son and leave this country once and for all.

Without thinking, my body shifted, and my legs already moved before my mind had fully decided to do so.

“Where are you going? You haven’t told me how funny I am.” His voice was sharp and laced with mockery, and it froze me mid-step, just when my hand hovered inches away from the door handle.

I couldn’t turn around; every nerve in my body screamed at me to run, but there was something about his tone that rooted me in place.

In the twinkle of an eye, I gripped the door handle and twisted it with trembling hands before I left without looking back.

The air outside was cooler, but it did nothing to calm me down while my heels clicked against the hard marble floor of the casino’s corridor.

As the corridor stretched endlessly before me, I quickened my pace and passed a line of golden lights and black walls. The sound of laughter and the clinking of glasses echoed from nearby rooms, yet it had no effect on my noisy mind.

“My sweet little Mira,” A voice from the past, muffled and distorted, sounded so loud in my ears.

Quickly, I whipped around and darted my eyes through the corridor, but there was no one. Not a single soul.

“It’s all in my mind,” struggling to catch my breath, my throat tightened, making every gasp a battle until I entered the main casino and looked around.

“Where’s the exit?” I asked, peering from one corner to the other until my gaze landed on a big exit sign close to a whisky counter.

As soon as the heavy casino slammed shut behind me, my phone buzzed violently in my purse, causing me to stiffen while I reached for it.

With trembling fingers, I pulled it out, and with a quick swap of my screen, a single word flashed at the top.

‘LUCIUS’

Lucius? How did he know that I was out already?” My thumb lingered over the screen for a minute because I was too terrified to open his message, and I hadn’t done everything I was supposed to do.

I didn’t get any useful information from Nicholas; as a matter of fact, I didn’t even get anything from him.

What was I thinking? There was no way he would agree to return my son back to him if I couldn’t do what I was instructed to do.

“Fuck!” I breathed, staring at the notification. I failed, but there was no way I would tell Lucius that. He was a perfectionist yet utterly unpredictable.

Every move he made was calculated, every plan was perfectly executed, and his predictions were always accurate.

I glanced up and down the lonely street, searching for any sign of Lucius, but he was nowhere. I was somehow relieved even though I couldn’t shake that he was close, always close, and always watching even when he wasn’t there.

Before I could decide if I was going to read his sudden message, my finger betrayed me, and his message displayed on the screen within seconds.

Your son is counting on you… Good job.

I read the words again and again as if repeating it would somehow lessen the pain. It didn’t; instead, my vision blurred as tears streaked down freely.

The noise from the casino behind me faded into nothing, leaving only the thumping of my heart.

Suddenly, a drop of rain fell, striking the back of my hand. Just as I was about to process what was happening, another drop followed, this time on my cheek.

NICHOLAS POV

“What was that all about?” Kelvin asked while I rolled up my sleeves and walked out from the restroom. His sharp eyes tracked my movements as he shifted from where he’d been leaning against the wall.

Tilting his head slightly, a hidden frown tugged at his lips. He wasn’t the best at hiding his emotions; no matter how much he tried, his face always betrayed him.

I exhaled slowly, scanning the corridor and forcing down the flicker of irritation creeping up my spine. He knew how much I hated being asked obvious questions, and yet he did it each time I acted recklessly.

“Nothing,” I muttered. A bodyguard shouldn’t be asking his boss questions. A fucking bodyguard shouldn’t speak until he is permitted to do so.

“Nothing?” He replied as his gaze sharpened.

“Drop it, Kelvin!” I snapped, shoving my hands into my pocket. As a minute of silence stretched between us, I watched him wait for an answer because he knew he was going to get it anyway.

“I thought he sent her?” I finally said, causing him to push off the wall and take a step closer.

“Who? The hound?” He asked calmly.

“Yes, but I’m not too certain. She looks too innocent to work for him.”

“Or were you just hoping she wasn’t sent by him so you would have a better reason and chance to fuck her?” A low snort escaped his mouth as he said this, and it made my blood boil.

Then I shot him a warning glare, making it clear that I wasn’t in that mood.

“At least she got out alive, and I didn’t have to hide any dead bodies like I did after your last four encounters with those lovely women that also looked so innocent,” he replied in a clipped tone, barely holding back his anger.

  • Mr Mafia’s Desire   Chapter 1- Return of the past

MIRA I jolted awake at the sound of a sudden loud bang that shattered the silence. Gasping for air, I blinked twice and sat up in my bed, then my hands reached for my son Rocco, who stirred beside me. "Mummy?" he said sleepily. "What was that?" "Nothing, honey," I lied, trying to keep my voice steady. "Just close your eyes and go back to sleep. Remember you have school tomorrow." He nodded and snuggled against me. Gently, I stroked his hair, trying to calm my own racing thoughts, but as I listened to the sounds from outside my apartment, my anxiety spiked. Deep down, I knew that something was not right, and it wasn’t one of the nightmares I usually had. What I heard was too loud, too real to ignore. The wind sighed, a few night birds chirped, and… "McGregor's stupid cat," I muttered to myself, hissing loudly. My eyes were closing gradually before I heard another loud bang, which was followed by a sudden opening of my door. I froze, feeling my heart slam in my che

MIRA Lucius sat in the patch of moonlight that flooded in through the window while his thin, evil face broke into a smile when he saw me staring at him. Although he had grown a beard that made him look different, it still couldn't hide the ugly scar that ran across one cheek. "Hello, Mira," he said. “It’s been a while." “How?” I gasped, breathing heavily. How did he find me? I shuddered as anger slowly took the place of fear. I had done everything I could to be free of him. Now he was in my house, holding my son and me hostage. "What the hell are you doing in my house?" I barked, placing my hands on the cold floor. His grin widened. "That's one of the things I have always loved about you," he said in the same low, teasing voice. He crossed one leg over the other and leaned back in the chair. "The way you can go from frightened to pissed just like that—" He snapped his fingers. "even if there are three guns still pointing at you. You're quite a woman, you know th

  • Mr Mafia’s Desire   Chapter 3- the job

MIRAThe cold light of dawn shone into the room as I sat there, staring anxiously out of the window. The clock struck the hour. It was time for me to go. I jumped to my feet and hurried to grab my car keys. I stopped when I saw my reflection in the mirror. My hair stuck out all over my head. My eyes were wild and frightened with dark shadows and a bruise under them. No surprise there. I hadn't slept at all. I had spent the night worrying about Rocco.I didn't kid myself that Lucius wouldn't hurt him just because he was a little boy. Lucius was the kind of criminal with no code or conscience. Grabbing my keys, I yanked on a sweater and left the house. I didn't remember the drive to Lucius's house. I just had a confused memory of sitting on the very edge of my seat, gripping the steering wheel, of horns honking, of drivers giving me the finger as I sped through the early morning traffic. When the tall, wrought iron gates of Lucius's mansion swung open a couple of hours later, it f

  • Mr Mafia’s Desire   Chapter 4- Meeting Mr Nicholas

MIRA The only sounds in the room were the sounds of the clock ticking, of my deep, nervous breathing, and of Lucius pacing his sitting room. "You understand what you have to do, don't you?" he asked. "Yes," I said, picking up a pearl-shaped diamond earring and putting it on. After I accepted to do the job, he had instructed one of the maid to bring the clothes I was supposed to wear for the job. They went well with the simple but expensive red dress, showing more than a hint of cleavage, that fitted me like a second skin. Lucius grunted. "Okay. But let me go over the details again. This job is damned important. It can't go wrong." He waited. When I didn't say anything, he went on. "This man, Nicholas, has regular habits... well, up to a certain extent. On Fridays, like today, he hangs out at the Royale casino, socialises, does a bit of gambling, and mostly wins." Lucius's voice turned bitter as though he hated the fact that this guy mostly had a winning streak. “Anyw

  • Mr Mafia’s Desire   Chapter 5- Mira’s plan begins

MIRA I saw his warm, brown eyes widen in surprise. Then they darted to my face, my wet dress, and my cleavage. They lingered there for a fraction of a second, and I knew I had got him. This was almost too easy. With a slight start, he looked me in the face and opened his mouth to say something. The words didn't come. "Well?" I said sharply. "What are you staring at?" "Listen, I'm sorry," he began. I interrupted him. "You were probably staring at someone else just like that, so it's obvious you weren't even paying attention to where you were going. For Pete's sake! This place is full of people in case you hadn't noticed." I paused to take a breath. He took the opportunity to say, "Like I said, I apo-" I put up my hand, palm up. Mira Nicholas’s brow furrowed into a frown as he steadied himself; however, it was in that brief moment that I took a close look at him. Nicholas Sterling was tall with a slim, muscular build that made the tailored black suit he wore well fitted. His murky black hair was slightly rough as though he had run his hands through it a couple of times. His brown eyes blended with his light skin, which also complemented the silver key necklace that rested above his chest, but it wasn’t his face or his other features that held me captive. It was the fact that I remembered and felt something that I had buried inside me for five years. I stepped back while these memories clawed their way back to the surface. The night!
