MELISSA’S POV

I couldn't really tell why my heart skipped a beat when I heard his voice. Hoping against hope that the voice I had just heard wasn't that of the person I suspected it was, I turned my head towards the direction from which the voice emerged.

And it was indeed him.

The CEO, or should I say. My ex-husband? Anyways, it was Listowel Gordon.

I felt my muscles tightening as my spine stiffened when our gazes met. "Planning anything cool?" he asked again, an indifferent expression on his face.

We all stood still, dumbfounded by his sudden appearance and more so, his question.

How is it his business if we are planning anything?

As he approached us, I cut him a deadly glare, expecting that he would catch on and leave. But he pretended as if he didn't see.

Averting his gaze from me to look at Maxwell, he asked, am I invited?

“Mind if I join you guys?”

I felt the muscles in my shoulders tightening, and my spine stiffening as I processed his words. He walked past me with an unrea

MELISSA’S POVI knew he was only trying to be silly so I acted like I didn't hear and walked away. ******The ride to the bar was quiet and the tension in it was so thick that it could be cut with a knife. My colleagues, Gloria, Yaw, Max and Collins were acting as if they weren’t the one that had excitedly hopped inside the car earlier. I guess they were intimidated by Listowel’s presence. Meanwhile, I had also experienced my share of the stress. Listowel had sat close to me and our bodies had been brushing against each other whenever the car swerved. In as much as I tried to suppress my discomfort, Listowel was comfortably seated, pressing on his phone, refusing to shift to the side a bit. Soon, the car pulled up in front of the infamous Murphy’s restaurant. From outside, I could hear the classic music and buzz of conversations from the insides as we stepped down from the car. Yaw, noticing my nervousness, was the first to talk. He gestured for me to come closer and said, “Come

LISTOWEL'S POVI tried hard to dodge the curious stares from the rest of the staff and those who were seated at the long table. Some were whispering and murmuring, while the rest had their mouths wide open. The expression they had on their face spoke none other than "What the heck is the cold CEO of all doing here at a team night out?” I could even see some random people at the restaurant secretly taking pictures and videos of me.Gosh... How I hate crowded places. I mean, can’t I go to places peacefully without having pictures and videos of myself circulating the internet? I was tempted to grab and smash the phone of a certain girl, whom I think is a blogger as she had her camera a few inches away from my face.If not for Mr. Bellingham, one of my administrative assistants, who had led her away, I would have probably been a hot topic in the news by now.MELLISA'S POVGloria, the vibrant thought this to be fun as she had a mischievous smile while shifting to and fra. MELISSA’S POVMy neck stiffened at his words. What does he mean by what he said? He expects me to take the food meant for him? In front of everyone? What even was going on in his mind when he placed the food before me? The deafening silence that engulfed our table caused a sense of dread through my bones. Everyone had their eyes on us, watching us with puzzled faces. Feigning a smile, I said, “No, thank you sir. I'm actually very full right now”. I declined and gently pushed the plate before him with the tip of my fingers. I turned back to face my colleagues with a smile that did not reach my eyes. I guess nervousness was too detectable for them not to notice as they also grinned awkwardly. “Or do you need me to feed you?” Listowel’s deep voice came through again. This time, I froze, his words sending a shiver down my spine. Is this why he insisted on coming with us? To make me feel uncomfortable? My fingers trailed from the table down to the chair. Moving slowly under the table,

MELISSA’S POVMy heart thumped faster against my ribs as the question came through. It seems the heavens aren’t on my side today. Why is everyone trying so hard to get on my nerves today? Or did they all collaborate with Listowel to ruin my time here? Now that I really thought of it, everything looks suspicious. First, it was the impromptu proposal, Yaw had called me to work on yesterday.Next was the rejection of the proposal. Followed by the team dinner, Listowel insisting on joining us and now here I was, being asked questions here and there as if there’s nothing else to discuss. Was I just overthinking or these are mere coincidences? My eyes trailed to the end of the table, where the voice came from. It was Priscilla. I had heard someone call her that when we arrived. But I couldn’t tell if this question came out of sheer curiosity or if there was something more behind it. For a moment, I sat frozen, thinking of what to say. I indeed know Wendy. Although I had heard of her

MELISSA’S POVHis words rang consistently in my ears. What does he mean by “everyone here knows you're special to me”?But what he said didn't bother me as much as the loudness of his voice did. He had said it out loud such that everyone had turned to look at us again. This is very unlike him. The Listowel I once knew liked to keep his things private and was reserved in nature. The man I fell in love with years ago wouldn't want people to glare at his wife with judging eyes. But the one sitting by me was a totally different person. He has changed or perhaps, I never knew him at all. I tried to steady my breath but the food in my mouth suddenly choked me. I couldn't swallow it down nor could I throw it out. My fingers trembled violently as I fumbled for the glass of water. But Listowel beat me to it.He reached for the water and quickly held it to my mouth, urging me to drink. Like a flash I gulped down three glasses of water, desperately hoping that it would help ease the burning s

MELISSA’S POVI swallowed hard, hating how vulnerable I sounded. “Why do you want to manipulate everything in my life? How much more do you need to hurt me before you stop? Do you hate me that much? What did I ever do to you? The least I thought was that I'd found genuine people who wanted to be by my side. But.. I guess it was all a facade. I thought….. I thought they were my friends,” my voice broke, the tears I've been holding back all this while freely cascading down my face like a free fall. My knees had become too weak to hold up the heaviness of my heart, making me squat before him. With my thighs supporting my elbows, I buried my face in my palms, when I finally remembered. It finally remember a pledge I made to myself. I had vowed to myself never to shed a single tear in front of Listowel. But I guess the weight of his actions has been too heavy for me to endure. No matter, how hard I had tried to suppress the vulnerable side of me, I guess he was the only one who c

MELISSA'S POVThe ray of sun filtering through the narrow space between curtains jolted me awake as it hit me. I spread my arms and stretched myself from the sheet that had tangled all over me. I glanced around to look at my surroundings and for a moment I couldn't remember where I was or how I got here.My head ached severely as I shut my eyes and flared it open once more. My hands instinctively reached out to a side of my head which was throbbing. I felt a dull non-stop ache through my whole body as I tried to sit up on the bed. Taking one more glance around, everything looked familiar. It then dawned on me that I was in my room and on my bed to be precise, "but how did I get here?".Moving my hands to my forehead, I attempted to recall how I came back home last night. My headache was even more as I struggled to remember how I had come home. My memory could only recap up to the encounter I had with Listowel in front of Murphy's, the bar."Gosh.., such a mess," I whispered, my sto

MELISSA'S POV"Omg., I can't believe I drank a whole bottle of wine last night..." I whispered to myself while staring at the bottle I was holding. My other hand instinctively reached out for my forehead because it was hurting me so badly. I took out the soup container from the fridge and poured some into a bowl before slipping it into the microwave. I turned it on and set it to heat for five minutes before heading back to the bedroom for the first aid kit box.Since it was my first time using the kit ever since I came to Aphrodite City, it took me a while to find the keys to it.I got an aspirin and swallowed after which I pushed it into the water before heading back to the kitchen. As if on cue, the microwave stopped as soon as I stepped foot in the kitchen. Using a glove, I took out the hot bowl of soup and set it before me.I wanted to heat for a while so I grabbed the remote, and turned on the television before scrolling through the channels. MELISSA’S POV Moments later, “There…. It's all done.” Listowel said, raising his gaze to meet mine. He had finished wrapping the bandage neatly around my knee. He cut off the excess bandage and asked me to stretch my legs. “Yeah… stretch it a bit forward. Do you feel any unease there?” he asked, probably making sure that he hadn't wrapped the bandage tight. “No. It is fine..” I responded, stretching my legs as he instructed. “We are all done then. Let me throw out the water and arrange the place before I go.” Listowel said while standing up on his feet. He strolled to the kitchen and attempted to pour the water into the sink. “No...no…” I said gesturing for him to send it to the sink in the guest bathroom rather. Some people may not see it as a big deal but I don’t find it hygienic to pour water filled with all those blood cells and other bacteria into my kitchen sink. Without any debate, Listowel did as I said as he turned and headed to the guest bathroom. I do

MELISSA’S POV “Thank you for your help. I think I can carry on from here,” I said as soon as Listowel set me down in front of my house. I can't believe he actually held me in his arms from the crime scene up to my house. Even in the elevator when I requested for him to put me down, he insisted otherwise. “I’m not leaving you here until I make sure you're good,” he said, his eyes trailing to my knee which he had tied with a singlet earlier on. “Do you need your singlet? I will dry-clean it and return it to you if you want. Better still, I could get you a new one….” I said and feigned ignorance, acting as if I didn't understand what he meant. “I’m. Not. Talking. Simple.” A scoff escaped my lips as I asked, “Why would you want to go inside my —” My words caught in my throat when Listowel snatched my card and used it to unlock the door. He opened th

MELISSA’S POV My eyes flickered when met with at of the figures before me. It was Listowel. He quickly rushed to my side. Pulling me into a tight embrace, “Are you okay?..” he asked, his breath rugged from the sprint he might have taken to get here. I let out a sigh of relief as his warm body touched mine. His body frame was big, especially his chest, so I felt like a child in his arms. Sniffling, “yeah… I’m okay” I nodded before answering. Running his hands gently through my hair, “I’m so sorry, I couldn’t find you on time. So sorry,” he whispered over my shoulders. He gently pulled me from his hold, caressed my checks, and asked in a low tone, “Did he do anything to you?” With tears streaming down my face like a free fall, I shook my head in disagreement. “Thank God. I was so scared,” he admitted before pulling me into a hug again. A sharp pain pierced through the cut on my knees, causing me to wince, “Ouch…” “What's wrong??” Listowel asked, his voice laced

MELISSA’S POV Clutching my bag tightly, my eyes darted sideways as I tried to confirm if someone was indeed following me. My breath hitched in my throat when I caught a glimpse of the figure behind me. From his black-on-black outfit, I could tell he was a man. Who was he? Why was he following me? What does he want from me? Quickening my steps, I dipped my hands into my bag to search for my peppered spray. Suddenly, “Hey….” the man’s creepy voice resounded from behind. My heart pounded even more heavily when I couldn't find the pepper spray. Without looking back, I took to my heels. I could feel my pulse beating in my palms as I ran. Realizing that he was catching up to me, “Help….” I shouted, hoping that someone would hear and come save me. My cry for help was only responded to by the quiet streets. I guess this is the disadvantage of living in a residential area. People don't sit outside nor linger around for fresh air. Panting, I took out my phone, hoping

MELISSA’S POV The cool evening breeze welcomed me as I stepped out of my office. Adjusting my bag strap, I darted around to check if there were any colleagues in sight. I wanted to let them know I was leaving first today. Yes, it wasn't 5pm yet today. It was fifteen minutes past four and I was already leaving the office. Why? Because I’ve been feeling a bit restless today. I’m certain that I’m not unwell but I can’t really tell where this sudden feeling was coming from. I was only able to endure till this time because I only forced myself to. Luckily, a staff from the executive office passed by just in time. “Hey Aria…,” I called while waving to get her attention. Halting in her tracks, “Hi Miss Muggins..,” she responded with a smile. “I’m a bit under the weather today so I will be leaving—” “Ouu… so sorry. I hope you get better soon,” she said, cutting me off with her concerned words. “Thank you, dear. In case HR comes around, kindly let him know.” “S

LISTOWEL’S POV My mouth flung open widely as I stared at what I had just done. “No, no, no, no! There must be a way to delete this…” I mumbled as I tried to figure out how to delete the photo. My fingers hovered over the phone screen, searching every nook and cranny for the delete button. “I have to get rid of this before she sees it.., I muttered after finally seeing the delete button. My stomach twisted when I realized there wasn't any ‘delete for everyone’ option. “I cooked…,” I yelled and clicked my eyes shut hoping that by the time I opened them, everything would just be an imagination. But no. The goofy photo of myself was staring back at me after I opened my eyes. “This is so embarrassing….,” I said while running my hands through my hair. The double checkmark appeared beside the photo and there was no doubt that Melissa had already viewed it. Tossing the phone aside, I turned off the bed lamp and laid back on the bed, my thoughts a mess as I contemplat

LISTOWEL’S POV It wasn't part of my plans to get Melissa flowers today. While on my way to work this morning, some pretty lilies caught my attention. They were so pretty yet delicate that they immediately reminded me of Melissa. I signalled for Kevin to park after which I got out and headed to the florist. A bright smile formed on my face while my eyes flickered with delight. “Lisa is going to love them,” I mumbled to myself while darting at them in admiration. The lilies looked so cute and lovely. Since I was running late to work, I decided to personally deliver them to her after work. I was so certain this was the plan I was going to go with until I remembered something. “Melissa has resigned from the M&M legal firm and is no longer working so she will definitely be at home today.” I thought to myself and signaled for Kevin to move. “Take me to Crimson Estate,” I said before bringing the flowers to my nose to inhale the sweet fragrance exuding from it. I could se

His grip on me loosened instantly as he winced in pain. “Fuck you” he cursed, shocking me. It wasn’t the fact that he had cursed at me that shocked me but the fact he was the last person I expected to do this. “How dare you…” I sneered, my hands shooting up to his cheeks as I gave him a dirty slap. Glaring at him from head to toe, “Have you lost your mind? How dare you touch me with those filthy hands of yours?!” My blood boiled with rage as I stared at Kevin. LISTOWEL’S butler. What was he thinking when he touched me with those filthy hands of it? Wait, who gave him the audacity to even come near me? Not to even talk of dragging me like that? WENDY’S POV A glint of hope flashed in my eyes as he went inside the shop. Was he getting them for me? Does he plan on visiting me today? Gosh… I should have stayed home and waited for him to surprise me. My heart swelled with excitement and I became even more certain that they were mine when he picked a bouquet of white lilies. Oh my God. They are my favorites. I've given so many hints on my social media pages that I love lilies. But I didn't expect it to have caught Listowel’s attention. My heart raced faster in my chest as I watched him pay for the flowers before returning back to his car. Was Listowel going to apologize for the humiliation he put me through? “Yes..yes.. He is,” a little voice in my head replied, causing me to giggle to myself. Tucking the loose strands that were hanging on my face behind my ears, I admired my reflection in the dashboard mirror before starting the car. A thought flashed in my mind while I continued tailing Listowel’s car.
