The sound of wood being chopped apart, with boys obnoxiously shouting and hollering at one another, woke Lowena at dawn.
"Lowena?" a female's voice called with a gentle knock on the door.
"C-come in," Lowena croaked, her throat dry from the burning fireplace.
A stunning young girl came into the room. With her flawless copper skin, long midnight-black hair, and perfect smile, the sight of her made Myrna jealous. She was beautiful and held a bundle of clean white towels.
"Hi, I'm Aiyana," she introduced. I'm sorry if you wanted to shower last night; we just finished the laundry."
"It's okay," Lowena replied. "How, how?"
"Did I come to live here?" Aiyana finished.
"Yes, sorry not to be intrusive," Lowena deviated. "I always came up to visit and never saw any of you. It was only my aunt and uncle; now there's nine of you from the looks of it-"
"Twelve," she corrected. "There are others you've yet to meet."
"Wow," Lowena gasped in shock. She thought her uncle and aunt didn't like people, but they were taking twelve male and female young adults into their homes.
"Anyhow, there's leftover breakfast in the kitchen if you're hungry," Aiyana completed before leaving Lowena's room.
Trying not to think too hard about it, Lowena skipped showering and went to the kitchen to see what was left to eat. After scouring the fridge, she decided to fry up a steak. There wasn't much available but meat and a lot of milk. Luckily for her, those were the two things she'd been craving the most lately.
"Something smells good," the blond boy spoke to Lowena.
"Oh, I was hungry. I hope this didn't belong to one of you," Lowena panicked.
The boy looked me up and down with a cocky chuckle, "I'm Cade."
"I'm-"
"Lowena, I know," he interrupted.
"Right," she sighed while removing her food from the hob.
"You're beautiful," he commented.
Lowena's cheeks flushed red. She thought he was handsome, too, but she couldn't find the courage to tell him that.
"But that's what's expected of a Luna," he added.
"Luna?" Lowena repeated.
"Cade!" Kieran barked from the hallway. "We need you in the field to gather the firewood."
"I came inside for some water," Cade defended.
Kieran looked back and forth between Lowena and Cane. Annoyance settled in.
"Looks more than just drinking water." Kieran approached Cade.
Even though both men were tall, Kieran was still more dominant in stature. His jaw clenched in unison with his fist as if to strike Cade.
"I'm going," Cade conceded while leaving the kitchen.
"What did he do?" Lowena asked.
"What did you do?" Kieran snarled while approaching Myrna.
Kieran seized her wrist, jerking her angrily towards him. He leaned down to her, the growl in his throat rumbled his chest.
"Nothing!" she defended, trying to break free from his grasp.
"Didn't look like nothing!" Kieran argued.
"Well, well, what do we have here?" a female's voice approached them both.
Kieran reluctantly released Lowena. "Cara, I didn't know you'd be back so soon."
"We didn't plan to leave for longer than two nights. I told you this," Cara sauntered to Kieran, seductively rolling her hips. She placed her lips on Kieran's, marking her territory before Lowena. Lowena, uncomfortable, looked away and continued eating her medium-rare steak.
"This must be Eli's niece," Cara commented.
Lowena nodded with a mouthful of meat. Cara walked over, looking her up and down as if examining Lowena.
"Well, aren't you pretty," Cara snarkily stated.
Lowena swallowed down her steak. "Thanks?"
"Hmm," Cara scoffed, "He only needs you for breeding."
Cara snatched the strap of Lowena's tank top, yanked her onto her feet, and tore the fabric apart.
"If you for a second think he'll ever love you like he does me, I'll kill you!" Cara snarled. Her voice echoed with a deep, animalistic growl.
"Lowena!" Eli announced while walking into the kitchen.
Cara released Lowena and went back to Kieran. Shocked, Lowena fell back into her seat, uncertain what had happened between her and Cara.
"Uncle, Eli!" Lowena rushed over to her uncle and embraced him.
"Lowena! You're shaking like a leaf," Eli commented.
"I'm fine," Lowena lied. "Can we go to your study? Please?!"
"Oh- of course!" he beamed while taking Lowena's arm and walking up the stairs.
Once safe inside, Lowena sat beside the warm, roaring fireplace. "Uncle, Eli, Cara just attacked me!"
"She what?" he questioned, unable to believe Lowena.
"She did. Look at what she did to my shirt!" Lowena whimpered.
"I think she's just jealous because of you and Kieran," Eli commented.
"What are you talking about?" Lowena shivered. "I don't even know the guy."
"He's your alpha," Eli answered.
"What the Hell is that supposed to mean? Like my betrothed? Isn't that something the world doesn't do anymore?" Lowena commented.
"Your father never told you any of this?" Eli gasped.
"What are you talking about?" Lowena sighed, "You sound ridiculous."
"You're a werewolf," Eli stated.
Lowena burst into laughter. "You're funny."
"I'm not joking, Lowena." Eli's eyes flicked to a fiery blue, silencing Lowena.. "I was part of your father's pack before I had one of my own."
"Wait, you're not my uncle?" Lowena whispered in shock.
"Not necessarily," Eli confessed. "We loved on one another like brothers. We're in a pack. It's more than just brotherhood; it's blood and family."
Lowena shook her head in disbelief. "No, you're lying!"
"On your twenty-first birthday, you will turn," Eli continued, "and you will be Kieran's."
"Be Kieran's for what?!" Lowena cried.
"As his mate," he finished.
"No!" she denied, fleeing the room and running outside.
Lowena ran out back through the vast green fields into the cobwebbing forest. She had been coming out here every summer since she was a child. Of course, the forest was too massive for her to have scoured every inch of it, but she knew where she could run to and still be safe. Once her legs could no longer continue, she sat on a thick, mossy root to catch her breath. Something about the birds singing and leaves rustling in the wind and the loud silence that followed had been a way of soothing Lowena ever since she was a little girl.
"How long do you plan to be out here?" Kieran's voice interrupted Lowena's thought process.
Lowena blinked back to reality, seeing that the sun was already setting. "How long have I been sitting here?"
"Hours," he answered.
"How did you find me?" she asked. "No one knows these woods better than I do."
"Mayen, you're wrong about that," he cockily replied, "Plus, I can smell you from anywhere."
"Smell me?" she repeated.
Kieran ran a hand through his thick locks of hair, groaning. "I assume Eli told you everything?"
"Just a few things," she replied.
"Well, Eli is the alpha of his pack, but soon, I will become alpha, and a few men and their women will come with you and me to start a new pack," Kieran explained.
"You must have all lost your minds," Lowena cackled. "You sound crazy."
"You don't believe?" Keiran asked.
He approached Lowena slowly, his pitch-black eyes piercing her soul.
"Why would I? It's all a myth. Next, you're going to tell me that fairies and vampires are real," she scoffed.
Soon, Keiran and Lowena were toe-to-toe. He leaned down to her and said, "Deep down, you know it's true."
"How would I know that?' she reasoned.
"You feel it," he hummed while placing his massive hand over her heart, only it covered her breast as well, "Your heart beats in unison with mine. You're my Luna."
The snapping of a twig caused Lowena to step back.
"There you are," Cara grumbled.
Cara's walk shows confidence, but her voice displays her distrust of the situation. Just as before, Cara seized Keiran's head and began to kiss him passionately. Myrna rolled her eyes and walked away from the scene as quickly as her legs could. She wasn't sure why, but seeing Keiran with Cara made her heart ache a little.
Lowena stood there panting, her damp chest glistening in the moonlight from the run. She ran the entire way back to the house. For some reason, it felt freeing; it calmed her and relaxed her mind. "There you are," Cade beamed upon approaching. He held a full plate of food within his grasp. " Are you hungry? I made you some dinner." "You made this for me?" Lowena questioned, "Why?" "Do I need a reason?" he debated. "Sorry," she apologized, "I'm not sure why I'm so aggravated." "Probably hungry." he gestured to a plate of the biggest T-bone steak Lowena had ever seen, along with a hefty size of mashed potatoes smothered in thick beef gravy. Lowena took the plate with a smile. "Thank you." "Come on," Cade smiled, guiding her to a massive stone gazebo in the backyard. "Wow," Lowena gasped. The gazebo was more significant than most, almost the size of a bedroom. A wide stone bench was connected to the wall, and a fireplace with a roaring fire inside was on the opposite
"W-what's going on?" Lowena stammered. "We need to get you ready for tonight's celebration!" Aiyana eagerly helped Lowena get dressed. "This looks ridiculous," Lowena chuckled. "A fox-fur bikini with this weird wolf headdress?" "It's tradition," Aiyana reminded. "I love yours. The midnight black fur matches your hair; it's stunning," Lowena gawked. "It's a red wolf fur you're wearing, not a fox," Aiyana corrected. "Really?" Lowena huffed, "I've never seen a red wolf." "They are rare and need to be celebrated," Aiyana said while finishing Lowena's makeup. "I look like some tribal woman," I groaned. "It's-" "Tradition," Lowena said in unison with Aiyana. "I know," she sighed. "I still don't believe in any of this, but if this is what he needs, then so be it." "You still don't believe?" Aiyana shivered. "How? None of them have shown you yet?" "Shown me what?" Lowena asked. "Wow, you look so much like your mother," Eli commented, standing in the doorway. Lowe
Eli pulled Lowena from the two girls. "What are you doing?" Lowena looked back, and the two girls stood there with their arms folded, their faces expressions of annoyance. "I was just dancing," Lowena defended. "Just dancing?" Eli chuckled, "Lowena, they're vampires." Lowena looked back at the girls. Her mouth opened, but no sound came out. The two girls rolled their eyes and began seductively dancing with one another once more. "They have an allure about them; we all do; it's intoxicating even to us," Eli explained. "You expect me to believe this?" she questioned. Eli gently guided her to the next group of people dancing more effortlessly, fair-like, and beautiful. One girl had emerald green scaly skin with yellow cat-like eyes, and another looked like the waves of the water, different shades of blue and white from her dress to her hair. "Nymphs," Eli explained, "They all have different strengths. Like Bashira, she's a snake type; Allura, she controls water elements
Cade seized Lowena's wrist, pulling her away from Derrick, "You know better, dead man." "Lowena asked for a drink," Derrick chuckled, "I couldn't tell the girl no." Cade growls like a wolf, baring his teeth like one. "Now, boys," Eli interrupted, "Let's not disturb this lovely night." Cade looked at Lowena, his hand still firmly on her wrist, "Come drink with your kind." Before Lowena could respond, Cade adjusted his hand so both their fingers interlocked and pulled her to a bonfire far from Derrick. Cade's grip wasn't as tender and gentle as before; now, it was firm and dominant. Lowena felt she had no choice but to follow. "Why did you call him a dead man?" Lowena questioned. "Lowena!" Cade sighed frustratedly, passionately grabbing Lowena before looking back down at her. "You need to start believing in what you are." Cade started walking again with a frustrated growl. Lowena bit her lower lip as they approached Aiyana. Aiyana's eyes widened at the sight of their ha
"Lowena? Lowena?" Eli rolled Lowena on her back, exposing her red, flushed cheeks and damp chest spilling from her top. "Did he do something?" he asked. "No," she denied, "I just feel strange." Another silent tear fell down her cheek. She felt afraid, nervous, and excited all at once. She had never experienced so many uncontrollable emotions. "It'll stop; the pheromones are leaving," Eli hushed while caressing her clammy cheek. Instinct caused Lowena to lean into his touch, "Everything is on fire." Lowena sat up, eyes glossy, looking at Eli for comfort. "It'll stop," Eli said, pressing his forehead to hers, his hand still holding her cheek. "Just breathe, Lowena." "Mmm," she whimpered once more, the heat within her body overwhelming her. Lowena grabbed his hand from her cheek and moved it to her breasts. "They're on fire!" she cried and moved his hand lower, "And here." When his hand was near her vagina, he locked it into place, "Lowena, what are
"Good morning," Kieran greeted with a tray of food. It wasn't a good morning for Lowena, though. She wasn't burning up like last night, but her body was still physically frustrated. Something she felt she needed deep within her, something different, but she couldn't pinpoint what. She removed her bikini and put on one of Kieran's oversized shirts to sleep in. The summer heat wasn't helping calm her nerves either. "Why are you bringing me food?" Lowena defiantly folded her arms across her chest. Kieran ran his free hand through his hair before placing the tray on the bed. "Eli wanted me to apologize." "Apologize for what?" she sneered. Kieran approached her, causing her cheeks to blush and look away from his dominating gaze. She remained still on the bed. "You know what." His voice was deep and seductive, making it more difficult for Lowena. "Or do I need to remind you?" She bit her lower lip, still unable to look him in the eye as he slowly moved his hand betwee
When Eli left, Aiyana entered Lowena's room and ran to her. "Are you okay?' she asked. Lowena was trembling, terrified, "W-w-werwolf?" Aiyana knelt in front of the traumatized Lowena; the look of shock on her face said it all. "Did you think it was a lie? You saw all different beings yesterday." "I thought I was hallucinating from something in the drinks," Lowena mumbled. "Are you okay? Your neck?! What happened?!" Aiyana rushed, grabbing the first aid from Kieran's nightstand and helping Lowena clean herself up. "He bit me," Lowena winced from the pain. Aiyana froze, "What?" "Eli bit me," Lowena repeated. Aiyana eased back, "Lowena, do you know what this means?" Lowena shook her head in confusion. "You don't know anything," Aiyana huffed while cleaning Lowena's wound. "He marked you as his own." "His own? I thought I was meant to be Kieran's Luna," Lowena reminded. Aiyana shook her head, wiping the blood from Lowena's neck, "Not anymore. He tells the b
Lowena walked back with Caspian, the rain easing til the sun came out to play. "It's amazing how you can do that," she admired. "It is mother nature; us fairies are bound to her in one way or another. Many are known to you as mythical creatures, such as the phoenix, griffins, and sirens. You may have seen them at the celebration last night," he explained. Lowena's cheeks blushed, and she confirmed, "There were these two women I first met; they looked almost like bats." "Those are the vampires. They have the most allure to them; they are the most predatorial. Their beauty enchants you, draws you in under their spell, and makes killing easy. They release a venom, similar to snakes than bats, that relaxes the prey, a euphoric opium if you will. "Wow," she hushed, "And the girls in the bird-like costumes? The ones that had scales?" Caspian chuckled, astonished by her curiosity, "You have your serpents, nymphs, mermaids. All can be fairies or witches; it depends on whether th
Caspian went down between Lowena's splayed legs and licked her most intimate area. Lowena's hands grabbed at the sheet, slicing and tearing into it with her werewolf strength. Wherever his tongue went, she couldn't help but match his rhythm. Her body wanted him, ached for him. She had never felt such desires before. Caspian sneakily slid his fingers inside her tight body, her legs wrapped around his neck. He placed his other hand upon her abdomen in the hope of easing the heat within her. Absorbing it wouldn't be the best idea, but she needed to remain a virgin until her birthday. The way her insides wrapped around his fingers made his erection grow; slowly, he felt the tension in her body ease. "Fuck!" Lowena moaned. Lowena felt a familiar, enticing burn that began to build deep inside her. The warmth of Caspian's hand seemed to aid in its build-up as she felt herself climax faster than she ever had before. Caspian pulled back from Lowena, resisting his urge to devour her v
"I'll take you back," Kage offered. "Why don't I, since you brought her out here in the first place?" Caspian reasoned. "Why don't you both walk back with me?" Lowena suggested. Kage and Caspian scoffed, refusing to answer. Instead, they folded their arms over their chests, acting like sad schoolboys. "Fine, you stay here; I'll walk back alone," Lowena sighed over their antics. Kage and Caspian shook their heads, pacing between each other and watching Lowena walk away. At the same time, they both rushed after her, escorting her back to the party. After an awkward, short walk, they were all surrounded by happily drunk people. Ethica boldly approached the three of them, firmly holding her chalice. Lowena's cheeks blushed red, remembering the kiss they shared the night before. "Lowena, there you are," Ethica greete. "King, Caspian, King Kage." Both dropped their jaws in awe as if in the presence of royalty of an even higher status than their own. Ethica took advant
Lowena stomped down the stairs, out the double doors, and into the celebration. At this point, she didn't want anything to do with either of them. Now wasn't the time for her to act rationally; it was time she stepped out of her shell. The loud drums echoed in her mind as she approached one of the bonfires. The heat from the flames wasn't scorching but relaxing, controlled even. "There you are," a seductive young woman whispered in Lowena's ear. Lowena turned, eyes widening in surprise to see the two women she had danced with the previous night before her once more, offering the bat chalice. She gladly accepted, drinking a mouthful of the thick copper liquid. It warmed every inch as it crept down her stomach. Lowena licked her lips, hungry, before looking back at both the girls. "What are your names?" Lowena asked. "Celeste," the shorter woman introduced. "Lucinda," the taller, slender one greeted. "I'm Lowena." The girls didn't respond but drank from the chalic
