Keva-
When I woke sometime later, I was chained to a wall in a dank basement that smelled of mold. It took a moment for my eyes to adjust to the dimly lit space. When I could see clearly, Ethan and Natalie stood a few feet away, with Natalie tucked under Ethan’s arm.
“Where am I?” I groaned as I pulled at the chains that bound my wrists above my head.
“It doesn’t matter where you are.” Natalie snorted. “You won’t survive much longer, so why do you care?”
“Why are you doing this?” My eyes went to Ethan.
Although he has shown his true colors, a part of me still hoped that there was a part of him that cared. Yet, as I looked into his dark brown eyes, all I saw was disgust. Pain exploded inside my chest as I looked at the man I had loved with all of my heart.
“When we first met, I admit I did want to be with you. Not out of love but because you were the most beautiful woman I have ever met. I never loved you. You were nothing more than a trophy I wanted to win or a vase I wanted to collect.” Ethan turned his head to look at Natalie. “That was until I met her.”
My eyes roamed over Natalie. At best, she was a little more than average when it came to beauty. She had an attractive body with curves in all the right places. She had long legs and large breasts, but they looked fake. If I had to guess, she likely had plastic surgery. Nothing about her seemed natural.
“So all this time, you were only pretending? I thought we were happy, and you told me you loved me.” I returned my attention to Ethan, who had returned his gaze upon me.
“I admit I was initially drawn to you, not just because of your appearance. You were there when I needed someone, but I never felt more than gratitude for you. I thought you would help me reach the top, but I realized you held me back when I met my true mate.”
“Then why become my mate or tell me you loved me?”
The pain in my chest from being hurt by Ethan slowly morphed into anger. The only reason I questioned him was so I could understand. I knew Natalie was misleading him, but I no longer cared about convincing him that Natalie was a fake.
“Because at first I was blind, and later I just wanted to keep you in line. If I didn’t keep pretending things were fine, you might have caused a scene and ruined things for me.”
My gaze fell on Natalie. “I am guessing you knew he had a mate?”
“I did.” Natalie shrugged as she crossed her arms and leaned against Ethan’s side. “So what?”
“If you were with her for a year, why didn’t you just end things then? I would have left quietly.” My gaze remained on Natalie as she smiled triumphantly at me.
“Because you were still of use. Although Natalie is the Alpha King's daughter, she was never trained because she is his precious daughter. You were helping me improve, and I admit you are skilled, but at most, I could only become Gamma with your help.”
I almost laughed at his words. Even if she were the true Princess, she would have been forced to train. My father believed that all his children should be taught as warriors. Not only to improve the strength within the pack but also to give us the skills to protect ourselves against threats.
“So you have chosen to make someone who can’t fight, your Luna?” My brows arched.
“I don’t care if she can’t fight. I will protect her.” Ethan squeezed Natalie against him while gazing at her with love.
“You are the biggest idiot I have ever seen.” I laughed.
“How dare you!” Natalie lunged forward and backhanded me across the face. “If you disrespect him again, I will end your life.”
My cheek burned from the slap, and blood filled my mouth, but I didn’t let it faze me. Spitting the blood out, I smiled at Natalie.
“You’re pathetic to cling to him. We both know that you can’t help him.” My attention shifted to Ethan. “Remember, when we met, you were weak and didn’t even know the basics. Even now, your skills are mediocre at best. Do you seriously believe that you or your warriors will be able to protect the pack against a threat?” My eyes shifted to Natalie. “Especially while you are trying to protect your beloved Luna?” I scoffed.
“My skills are only mediocre because your training methods are ineffective.” Ethan moved forward and grabbed me by the throat. “Even if you are our most skilled warrior, you are nothing.” His hand tightened around my neck.
“Remember those words the next time the pack is attacked.” I struggled to breathe under the pressure around my throat, but my voice remained steady and strong. “If not for me saving everyone during the last attack, none of you would have survived.”
I knew I shouldn’t be testing him right now, especially since I was not in any condition to fight against them or defend myself. However, I wanted him to slowly regret his choice.
During the time I tried to train Ethan, it had been difficult. Teaching him the basics took six months but shouldn’t have taken that long. After a year, he finally defeated most members of the pack, but their skills weren’t that impressive.
Most of the members have potential, but I was fairly sure that Ethan had reached his limit. I would be surprised if he could improve any further. If not for the fact that the other members lacked any real ability to fight, I doubt even I could teach Ethan enough to allow him to move through the ranks.
During the entire time I spent training Ethan alone, he constantly complained about being inferior. That was part of the reason I hid that I was helping him improve and build his reputation behind the scenes. I also held back a lot and haven’t revealed what I am truly capable of because I knew he would feel incompetent.
“You don’t need to worry about that.” Ethan chuckled as he released my neck. “I have already met with the Alpha of the Crimson Fang pack. Because he saw my value, he relocated his pack, and now they neighbor our territory. After they settle, the Alpha will help train my warriors personally. With his help, we will become stronger.”
My mind became focused on the pack he mentioned. I knew about the Crimson Fang pack. Aside from the Royal pack, Battlecrest Guardians, they were the strongest. I haven’t heard about them relocating, nor did I know of any dealings with them.
Tilting my head, I studied the two standing in front of me. I doubted that they had the connections or the ability to have Crimson Fang relocate. Although I have helped this pack gain resources, I couldn’t even bring in the second largest and strongest pack.
So, why would they agree to help Ethan? This pack has made waves in the world and has grown in the past two years, but I doubt that Crimson Fang would lend their help or even relocate for Ethan alone.
“Since the Alpha of Crimson Fang is my brother's best friend, of course, they will help.” Natalie smiled sweetly at Ethan as she wrapped her arms around him.
Now I understand and remember. Crimson Fang’s Alpha was Daxton Cruz. He was Silas’s best friend and had taken over as Alpha when I was fourteen. Silas and Daxton were six years older than me, but I always considered Daxton, my annoying older brother. Even if he annoyed me when I was growing up, it would make sense if my brother asked Daxton to connect with this pack.
“Do you think he will help you after he learns about what happened tonight?”
I tried not to have an attitude as I spoke. Now that I knew there was someone nearby who could help me, I needed to keep Ethan calm. From the glare Ethan shot me, I didn’t think it would be that easy.
“I am tired of listening to your nonsense.” Ethan growled.
“Then release me.”
I knew it was a long shot, but as long as Ethan was willing to release me, I would have no problem leaving without making them pay. Granted, I would take back everything I gave them and make sure they understood that without me, they had nothing. I considered sticking around to watch them crumble, but at this point, I just wanted to leave.
“If you think you are going to get out of here, you are mistaken.” Ethan chuckled. “I won’t give you the opportunity to make a fool of me and destroy everything I built.”
“Also, after you hit your Alpha, you forfeited your life.” Natalie sneered.
Looking between them, I realized that I was in real trouble. I couldn’t access my phone, and even if Daxton was in the area, I couldn’t contact him. Also, despite being in the pack for two years, I didn’t have any friends.
My focus had been on helping Ethan, and I did my best to keep to myself so no one would suspect anything until Ethan could stand proudly in front of everyone. After what happened at the party, it was clear that no one would oppose their Alpha.
“You can’t do this to me! You will regret this, and you will all suffer if you don’t release me!” I yelled as I fought against the chains.
“You are the one who will regret this. If you hadn’t made a scene, none of this would be happening. You brought this upon yourself.” Ethan tucked Natalie under his arm as they turned and started walking away.
“Please let me go. I will leave quietly. Just consider it returning the favor of me helping you in the past.” I pleaded.
When Ethan and Natalie stopped, I thought he might have a change of heart and let me go. I held my breath and waited patiently, but Ethan didn’t say a word. His head turned, but instead of looking over his shoulder at me, he looked at one of the warriors in the room.
“Take care of her.” Ethan spoke and then walked away, ignoring my endless pleas.
After Ethan and Natalie were gone, I was surrounded by four warriors. They had masks on, so I couldn’t see who they were. I tried to reason with them, but they didn’t respond. As they slowly approached, I continued to try to escape the chains, but my efforts were futile.
To my surprise, however, one of them reached over my head and released the chains around my wrists. I thought they were letting me go, so I stepped forward to move past them. My foot barely touched the ground before I was suddenly hit in the gut and fell to the ground.
One after another, all four men attacked. The attacks were relentless. One of the men used a knife on me. He didn’t stab me with it or use it to end my life. Instead, he slashed the blade against my skin multiple times. Blood poured out of my wounds, making me lightheaded and too weak to do much besides curl up on the floor and try to protect myself.
I thought they were going to kill me, but just before I was at my end, they stopped and left me in the cell to bleed out. As I lay on the ground, I couldn’t stop my tears. Now more than ever, I regret leaving home.
“If I get out of this. I will make them pay.” I spoke with enough conviction that it gave me a little strength, but my body became limp, and my eyes closed.
I don’t know how long I was out, but I awoke from a sudden commotion sometime later. My eyes opened slightly, but my vision was blurry, and I was too weak to move. A prominent figure moved into the room, but I couldn’t see who entered.
I murmured something incoherently, but I wasn’t sure what I said. I tried to keep my eyes open, but my eyelids felt heavy, and I started to fade. I felt someone lift me off the ground, cradling me against their chest as if I were precious, but I didn’t know who it was.
“Forgive me for being late, but I will get you out of here.” A familiar male voice spoke, but it took me a moment to register who it was.
Keva-“No!”A scream echoed in my mind as I suddenly woke up and sat up straight. It took me a moment to realize that I was the one who had screamed, as remnants of my nightmare raced through my mind. Taking in my surroundings, I came to the unsettling realization that it hadn't just been a nightmare; it had been real.“Kev, how are you feeling?” My father's voice was filled with intense emotion and profound sorrow.“Daddy.” I sobbed and launched myself into his arms. His warm embrace filled me with an even deeper sense of regret. Hiding my face in his chest, I let my tears flow freely. It felt as if it had been a lifetime since I was held by someone who truly cared for my well-being.“You’re safe now.” My father’s tone was soft as he rubbed my back like he did when I was a child. My tears slowly dried and I calmed down. After sniffling a few times, I lifted my head and pulled away from him. Using the back of my hand, I wiped away the tear stains on my face. Glancing around the hospit
Daxton-“How about we leave you to get some rest? Carter and I will head home with Dad, to set up things. The doctor said you would need to stay here for a couple of days.” Silas’s gaze moved from Keva to me. “How about you stay with her for now?”“Sure.” I hoped that Keva didn’t notice anything in my voice.“I will be fine on my own.” Keva argued.“Nonsense.” The Alpha King, Charles, shook his head and patted Keva on the head. “After what they did to you, I will not allow you to be alone until you return home. I will feel better knowing someone is here to protect you. I don’t know what you have been through these past two years, but your body and wolf are weak.”I tried not to seem obvious that I wanted Keva to agree to let me stay. Since the moment she woke up, I have done my best to seem indifferent. I don’t know what she went through with Ethan, but I could tell by the condition she was in when I found her, that it was bad.If I had known that she would meet someone like Ethan, I n
Daxton-A few hours later, the others leave the hospital, while I stay behind with Keva. I wished that Silas never mentioned how I felt about Keva, because now I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I also couldn’t stop thinking about what Silas mentioned about pretending to be her mate when she faced Ethan again. Not only would I have an excuse to be around her, and protect her, but I could also see Ethan’s look when he saw Keva and me together. Despite Ethan being an idiot, I doubted he was stupid enough to cross me. His pack might be growing, but it still had a long way to go before it was near my level.I considered asking Keva about what she went through these past two years, but I didn’t get a chance. Shortly after her brothers and father left, she fell asleep. Only after she was sleeping did I relax a bit. Instead of keeping up my indifferent attitude, I sat beside her and watched her sleep. Her features were tense, but when I rested my hand on her forehead and massaged the space b
Keva-On the third day, I could finally leave the hospital. It hadn’t been terrible to stay at the hospital, but it felt as if the walls were closing in on me. A lot had to do with how Daxton kept hovering over me. Other than when he left me alone with Madison after she arrived, he hadn’t left my side.Even when I went to the bathroom, he stood guard outside of the door. The worst part was that it was almost impossible to start a conversation with him. When he did manage to talk, it was short and simple, maybe a word here or there, a nod or a grunt.“Where are you parked?” I asked Daxton as we exited the hospital.“Over there.” He nodded to the north end of the parking lot, where I saw a familiar motorcycle.“You still have that?” I cocked my head to the side as I walked alongside him.“Why wouldn’t I?” Daxton shrugged. “It’s a good bike.”“I doubt it is a good bike, considering a ten-year-old bought it for you.” I scoffed and tried to hide my smile. When he turned sixteen, I overhear
Keva-“What is all this?” I asked with wide eyes and a slack jaw as I gazed upon the massive pile of gifts in the living room.“When we knew you were returning home, we went a little crazy buying gifts.” Carter exclaimed as he took my hand and led me to the circular coffee table, in the center of the room, where a portion of the gifts were on display.“This is too much.” I groaned.“Maybe, but we haven’t been able to spoil you for two years. Plus, some of these presents were what mom bought you before she left us.” Silas stepped forward and picked up a square box, with velvet black fabric. “Mom bought this for your last birthday.”Taking the box, I flipped open the lid and nearly started crying again when I saw a beautiful necklace inside. For as long as I can remember, she has bought me jewelry with ruby gems. I knew it was because it was my birthstone and her favorite jewel. The necklace was simple, with a single ruby surrounded by an arrangement of smaller rubies and diamonds. Touc
Keva-The following morning, I immediately turned on the laptop Silas gave me. Since I fell asleep on the couch, I didn’t need to go far. It didn’t take long for me to connect to a video feed coming from the camera on Carter. The camera showed him talking to his friend, as they rode in a car together. I had hoped he would already be dealing with Ethan, but I was also glad he hadn’t started yet. I wasn’t sure how much time I had to spare before Carter met with Ethan, so I quickly set the computer aside to use the restroom and freshen up for the day. When I returned downstairs, I was Daxton. “Good morning.” He spoke.“Where did you go last night?” I asked out of curiosity but didn’t expect him to answer.“I had a call I had to handle. When I finished, I didn’t want to bother you while you were with your father, so I slept in a guest room.”“Oh.” I nodded, feeling a little awkward.Taking in his appearance, it seemed as if he had been awake for a while. There wasn’t any trace of sleepine
Daxton-Seeing Keva smile and laugh, filled me with undeniable longing. Even if it has only been a few days since she has returned to my life, it felt like a long time since I have seen her happy. It had been risky to face Ethan, but as long as it made her happy I wouldn’t hesitate to do it again.“Now what do you want to do?” I asked when Keva closed the laptop.“I thought about returning when I was stronger, but I think it might be better to return now. Carter might have got in, but Natalie is bound to slip up. Before the truth is revealed, I want to let them think they have won.” Keva set the laptop aside and resumed eating the food I gave her.“What do you mean?”“Natalie seems convinced that Carter believes that she is his sister, but she won’t fully trust him not to see through her lies. As long as I return, I can have their attention on me. Besides, in my current state, they won’t see me as a threat.” Keva said between bites of her sandwich.“I thought the plan was to get Carte
Keva-“Do you think I am doing the right thing?” I asked Daxton when we arrived at Stark Growlers.I expected the guards protecting the territory would cause problems when we arrived, but they didn’t even notice me. Their attention had been on Daxton. Seeing how much they respected him made me feel at ease for using him as a shield.Technically I wasn’t exactly using him. It had been Daxton’s idea to pretend to be mated, but I had felt a little worried that it would bring problems for him. I knew he had reached an alliance with Ethan, but I hadn’t known the extent of it until now.Apparently, Daxton was not just the Alpha of an allied pack, he was also a temporary member. He has taken the position of Gamma, to train the members of Stark Growlers. I also learned that he wasn’t meant to report to the pack for another week but had already informed Ethan he would be arriving ahead of schedule. On the drive back, I had been determined to take back everything I gave Ethan, but now I was uns
Daxton-Tapping the end of my pen against the desk, I watched the clock and counted how much longer I would need to stay. Technically I could leave whenever I wanted to, but I had to make it appear that I was unhappy about my mate being locked up. It has already been three days since Keva has pretended to be detained by Carter. There were still a few hours until our plan to pretend to have my pack doctor announce that Keva was in a coma. Currently, Ethan is away from the territory but should return at any time. Once he returned, the show would begin. Everything needed for the plan to go smoothly was already in place, but I was becoming anxious the longer I waited.Ethan has set me up in a room in the pack house, to use as an office. I didn’t want to be away from Keva right now, especially since she was still healing. Technically it wasn’t a big deal about going home now, since Keva was at Carter’s house. I was just annoyed that I couldn’t be with her.“Daxton?” Natalie’s voice came th
Keva-“Do you have a problem with that?” Natalie asked Ethan.“Not at all. I am just confused. I thought all werewolves are weak around wolfsbane.”“Me and my siblings aren’t. We were exposed to it at a young age and became immune for the most part. It can still affect us, but as long as we don’t directly ingest it or touch it, it doesn’t do anything to us.” Carter explained.“Then why does Natalie need to leave?” Ethan asked. For once, Ethan seemed a little smart. Turning my head to glance at them, it seemed as if Ethan was genuinely confused, and a hint of doubt was displayed in his expression. Natalie looked toward Carter as if he would answer for her.“I, uh…” Natalie staggered back as Carter and Ethan focused on her with penetrating eyes.“You have a point. Gumdrop, if you want to stay, you are more than welcome. Since you are more immune to wolfsbane than I am, perhaps it will be better for you to use it on her.” Carter cocked his head and the corner of his mouth twitched as his
Keva-“Don’t stop!” I ordered my brother through gritted teeth.“I can’t do it anymore.” Carter dropped the bullwhip and took a few steps back.He has been torturing me for two hours so far and other than the whip, everything else was finished. I had numerous wounds all over my body from different torture methods, but he has only used the whip on me three times. Since I was chained to the wall, I couldn’t move much other than craning my neck to look behind me at my brother. He had tears streaming down his face and his hands were shaking. Carter was two years older than me, but currently, he looked like a small child who had done something horribly wrong and was devastated with immense guilt. I knew that each time he had hurt me, it hurt him as well, but it wasn’t time to stop.Carter cherished me more than his life and he has never done anything to physically hurt me. Each time he caused me pain, he became distressed. Thankfully I was skilled with computers and would be able to edit t
Keva-“This is the only way you will get their absolute trust.” I twisted toward Carter, placing my hands on his arm. “If Natalie sees what you are willing to do for her, she will begin to let down her guard. I thought about it and it isn’t enough to just prove that she is a fake. I want to show everyone what kind of people they are.”“You are asking the impossible.” Carter shook his head and shoved my hands off him before standing up to pace the room.“I know I am asking a lot, but this is the only way.” I quickly stood and placed myself in front of Carter, grabbing his arms and forcing him to stand still to look me in the eye. “You know I can handle it.”“But…” Carter's eyes filled with tears and my love for my brother increased.“But nothing. Remember when we were being trained, we had to undergo torture as well. As the future leaders of our kind, we were taught how to get through anything. If we are ever captured and tortured by enemies, we must know how to survive, keep our secre
Keva-“I am starting to believe that every word out of your mouth is a lie, with how easy it is for you.” I sneered.“I am not lying!” Natalie yelled with tears streaming down her face.“You really should have tried a career in acting, I think you missed your calling.” I shook my head as I looked at the audience and how they were wrapped around her finger. “Or just give everyone a stupidity reward.” I let out a small laugh, unable to hold it back.I was tempted to let the show come to an end and tell everyone the truth about who I was. As my eyes shifted from one face to the next, I knew I couldn’t let everyone off so easily. Seeing how convinced everyone was that they were on the right side, I wondered how everyone would respond when they learned the truth. Right now, Natalie and Ethan have their absolute trust.“What do you want to do?” Carter’s voice filled my head.“I don’t know. I hadn’t expected this to happen. As much as I want Natalie to suffer like I did, I am not going to s
Keva-We didn’t proceed with the challenge behind the packhouse; instead, we went to the training grounds, which is as large as a football field. As we ventured over, we passed by my house, or what remained of it. It was a pile of debris and soot. Surprisingly, seeing the house made me feel much better like my heart was lighter. After stepping onto the training grounds, I walked to one side of the field, while Ethan and Natalie walked to the other. Roughly twenty yards separated us. While I stretched my limbs, I watched Ethan and Natalie whisper to each other. I couldn’t hear what they were saying, but it didn’t matter.“Are you sure about this?” Daxton joined me on the field.“Since they issued the challenge, I have no reason to disagree. Even if I am not at full strength, I believe I can handle Natalie. Her lies are full of holes, but I remember hearing that she was never trained. She claimed that her so-called father didn’t have her trained because she is his precious daughter.” I
Keva-Sticking to the back of the crowd, I watched silently with satisfaction. Ethan didn’t look like he was having much fun. Surrounded by pack members as they demanded an explanation while waving paper in his face, Ethan was sweating profusely.“If we knew that you weren’t the one to do all these things, we never would have accepted you as our Alpha!” One member shouted.“We don’t need an Alpha who is reaping the rewards of someone else's credit!” Another shouted.“What is going on here?” The previous Alpha asked, holding up a paper. “Why is Keva’s name on all of this? Did you lie to me so that I would accept you as my successor?”One of the members dropped the paper on the ground. Since I didn’t know what the paper was, I bent over to pick it up. After examining it, I saw it was one of the papers Daxton had shown Ethan earlier.“Did you do this?” I asked Daxton as I held up the paper.“I couldn’t let Ethan talk his way out of it or hide it. Now that the truth is out, he will pay fo
Keva-“Alpha!” A man yelled from the front door while knocking on it rapidly. We had just finished eating and Daxton was in the kitchen washing dishes. I offered to help, but he refused and told me to relax in the living room. Since Daxton’s hands were buried in soapy water, I went to answer the door.I recognized the man as Daxton’s Beta but had only seen him once. I could remember his name, but since it seemed like he had something important to discuss with Daxton, I stepped out of the way and let him enter the house. Daxton’s Beta didn’t hesitate as he swiftly entered the house and entered the kitchen.“What’s wrong?” Daxton asked as he continued washing the dishes.“Ethan came with some of his warriors and is demanding to see Keva.”“What does he want to see her for?” Daxton’s expression changed from calm to anger, almost immediately.“He claims that she burned down his house.”“His house?” I scoffed as I shut the front door. “That house is mine.”“Where is he?” Daxton asked as he
Keva-When I woke in a strange room, I wasn’t sure where I was, until I remembered what I had done after returning home. I also vaguely recalled Daxton taking me out of the house and bringing me to his house. Sitting up on the bed, I thought about everything that had happened since returning to face Ethan.I had been prepared to deal with him, but now I was starting to think I was in over my head. The pain in my heart was still raw and nothing was going as I thought it would. Perhaps I should have waited until I was in better health or had a better idea of what I wanted to do.Feeling out of sorts and like I was a little lost, I let out a sigh, as I pushed off the blanket covering me and moved off the bed. I looked around the room and noticed that the furniture was new, but a little plain. It wasn’t the quality of the furniture, it was how there wasn’t a single decoration.Placed in the center of the room was a king-size bed, with a black headboard. There was a nightstand on both side
