Ch. 63

Raya’s POV

My grandfather, Harold, and I spoke for hours in the back of his shop. He closed early on my account, guiding me to the small room he had behind the beaded curtain. He made me promise never to take the necklace off. My father and he had worked very hard on it, and he kept it around just for me. How could I ever take this thing off?

He used to be a very powerful wizard alongside my father, but he inadvertently lost his magic. He tried using forbidden magic, causing the gods to take it away as a consequence. Apparently, he is still able to detect magic in objects as well as people, and can still be affected by magical items. He just can’t cast spells or use magic himself. I felt great sympathy for him when he shared his story. I wished I could give it back. Heck, I even tried. He laughed, telling me I don’t have that kind of power. Eventually, I knew I needed to go and prepare for my ceremony, but I didn’t want to leave his side.
