"Just look at her blossom like a flower in spring." The queen in distaste said as she watched Theresa from one of her windows. She was walking out of the castle with a gathering basket on her arm. “I hate to admit that with the physical attributes of Adolph and that nymph, she turned out to be the fairest in the kingdom… but she still comes second place to me.” She finished haughtily.

Lucas who was scribbling something down on a scroll, looked up for a moment. "She's seen eighteen winters, Ursula, what do you expect?"

The queen turned away from the window and stared at him. "Eighteen winters and yet she finds no mate." Her voice was laced with mockery.

Lucas sighed and put down his quill. "Yeah, and thanks to you influence, no lycan will woo her because of you. They all avoid her as if she is the very plague."

Ursula snorted and poured herself a drink, then sat down on the furry-long, one-arm couch in the lounge. "I believe my subjects fear and respect me and so do they towards my wishes. Besides, she's not quite really one of us, so don't blame me for her misfortune of being an ostracized hybrid." She sipped from the goblet. “It is no fault of mine that she’s yet to have her lunar call. Maidens are peers had theirs as young as six winters.”

"Every man out there with sight will testify to Theresa's priceless beauty. As far as I'm concerned, she's the fairest maiden in the whole of the realm; you just said that yourself too. She’s the fairest of both her kind and ours combined. The men only won't come near her because you spread the rumour to the elders that her mother was mentally ill and suicidal, and that she attacked you while you were asleep in your chambers. And when you fought her off, she attempted to throw herself off the building with her child which you claimed to have saved on time before her mother plummeted to her death. Now, they are all scared that she carries the same mental illness and do not want her in their families."

Ursula looked away. "Her mother’s death is deserved. Do not remind me of that, Lucas. If I hadn't done what I did and word had gotten out about our affair, you'll have your head on a pike for daring to defile the king's bed and I will be disgraced and banished to be a vagabond forever and that's a fate I'm not willing to face. It's been eighteen winters already and I'm happy to be rid of both my husband and his concubine."

"You sent Crocottas after the king who imitated Alethea's voice to lure him out and they devoured him and his men. The elders are still investigating the issue even after eighteen winters. They are still of the belief that the attack is not ordinary and some dark magic must be involved."

"Why go down the memory lane of the bitter past?" She asked in irritation. "Would you have preferred a Manticore, the Cyclops, or perhaps the Keres to get the job done?" She waved a dismissive hand, "you couldn’t bear to drive a dagger into the king’s heart because you were soft and incompetent, so, I did the job for you to save both our heads, especially yours from the executioner’s blade.  If you are becoming remorseful about everything that happened eighteen winters ago, well, it's a little bit late for that now because not even the accusing venomous tongues of the Erinyes will bring them back..." she gave him a suspicious look now "or..." she stood up, "do you occasionally talk me to death about this because you have grown weary of me and are now beginning to find Theresa fairer than I am?"

Lucas lifted his brows in shock. "What!"

The queen quickly cut in with an accusing tone, "I knew you had an eye all along for Alethea, but your cousin, the king beat you to it and got to her first! Is that why you asked me to spare the child’s life so that you could have the replica of her mother and still fulfil the desires the dead king destroyed?"

"Ursula!" Lucas called sternly. "How could you even think of that! If I had eyes for any other woman, I wouldn't remain unmated to be by your side."

The queen smiled, approached him and caressed his face. "You are a loyal subject, Lucas. A very loyal one and that's why I elevated your royal position when I became Queen Ruler of the realm... but!" She tore her hand from his face and went around him. "I'll still take no chances. I'm not going to let Theresa's presence ruin what we have; what we have painfully built over the years."

"And what do you plan to do?" He asked suspiciously, feeling her presence behind him.

"As the Queen of the realm and her supposed mother, I'm liable to marry her off to anyone I so choose." She chuckled. "Perhaps, I should give her to the satyrs; they always appreciate invaluable beauties."

"Their lot is lecherous!" Lucas huffed. "Those hooved perverts will defile and devour her innocent body without mercy."

"The centaurs then, or the giants? Any creature who's willing to take her off my hands and make her his." She chuckled and walked past him to refill her goblet with more wine. "I wonder if her thighs will also be irresistible like her mother's, perhaps, that was why the king chose to dwell there in the first place."

"You despised his touch." Lucas said. "You were like a cold stone underneath him any time he laid with you."

"Well, maybe but I was like boiling lava any time you made love to me, dear Lucas! Don't you see the difference?!" She exclaimed.

Lucas sighed and looked away. "You have turned a princess into a serving wench, Ursula. The least you could do is find her a worthy husband that would provide for her and bring her under his protection now that the veil separating the two realms is getting weaker by the day and viler creatures are slipping into our realm. It still baffles me how you even got to the Crocottas. No one can control those beasts…but you could…”

"Worry not, my dear Lucas about those poor beasts. All you need to know is that they are loyal to only me. And as for the weakening veil, I'm sure that the Were-Guardian at the border of the veil are doing their best to keep that veil intact...even though I know that their loyalty is not completely sworn to me. They are the most unbending lycans that I have ever come across and that's quite distasteful," she said coldly.

"What are you going to do about Theresa?" Lucas asked again.

"Aha!" The Queen exclaimed, back to the half-nymph. "The earlier I find a mate for her far away from here as possible, the more relieved I'm that I'm finally rid of Adolph's shameful seed." She paused as she walked back to the window. A dark cloud was gathering from afar, indicating an impending heavy downpour. "Do you know that her Chaperone says she has never shifted? Not even the moon could bring out the lycan in her with all its lunar charms and prowess. Her gift is dormant and even if I did nothing to keep the people away from her, she would never have belonged."

"She never had anyone to guide her Ursula. She might not be fully one of us but our blood still flows through her veins. She’s part werewolf"

"Yea..." She said drily. "Adolph's seed has always been weak. It's a good thing I'm barren or I might have been wallowing in the guilt of ever birthing a weakling, or perhaps, a spindly child who would sit on the throne and make such a disgrace of me."

Lucas regarded her quietly then finally said what he had been keeping in for years. "We have been making love for nineteen winters, Ursula, and you have never for once taken in, so will you also term my seeds weak too?"

Ursula smile waned a bit, besides the hurt, there was also a hint of wickedness in it. "Poor, poor Lucas. Don’t you know that tongues will wag if I take in for you? The people will suspect what's going on without a second guess. The Queen of the realm, pregnant without a mate. I'd not like to start explaining myself to an idle bunch of old men who hide under the guise of elders who lazy around and put their noses in businesses that they shouldn’t meddle in..." She placed the goblet on the table and approached him as the wind of the impending rain slipped into the lounge and fluttered her hair and gown. "Come my love." She took Lucas' hand and pulled him out of the seat. "It's time to do your duty by me. You know how needy I can get when the rains come.  You know how the rain compels my body to its will so much. Come." She led him to her chambers immediately and began to peel off his clothes.

Theresa walked along the bush path and down towards the stream where the wood nymphs had their daily bath. They were rather renowned for their melodious voices which inevitable pulled lustful satyrs to them. Unlike their distant cousins who inhabited other parts such as the water, caves etc., the forest nymphs were frequently seen more than their sisters. They enjoyed being great teases to the satyrs who enjoyed coming after the nymphs to woo and seduce them. The satyrs were known to be good flute players and couldn't resist the voices of the beautiful nymphs when they sang. Although being almost half human and half goats from the waist down, they still were magically pulled to nymphs who were of a different species. The nymphs turned to look at Theresa and one of them whispered

  • Moon's Call   6 - Saving a Mermaid

Theresa stared at the mermaid in awe. She had heard of the creatures that lived in the unknown utopia of the depths of the sea but no one had really seen much of them, unlike their distant cousins who lurked in the rocky parts of the sea and lured sailors to their watery death with their alluring voices and personal hallucinations. This mermaid before her had a beautiful tail that looked so soft and glimmered as if the light of the sky reflected off it. The end of the tail moved like it had its own mind. It was as if she could run the thin and transparent end of the powerful tail on her face and her skin would not be bruised in any way. It was so resplendent; no wonder the mer-people always never revealed themselves at all to others, except of course when no one was there. This helpless mermaid had long hair which was adorned with different types of gems, very rare shells and beautiful bones of dead sea creatures that were yet to be discovered. Her breasts were covered by a thin film

  • Moon's Call   7- Berry

Theresa placed the basket on the floor and went on her knees to look under the bed. Fortunately, the creature was still where she had left it. She could not exactly see its features because the room was dark neither could she hear it because the wind howled crazily outside, some of it slipping through the cracks in the wooden window into the small room to seldom flicker the flame of the candle which she had put on a moment ago after peeling off her wet clothes and donning a new dry one.She could however tell that the creature was still there due to his fluctuating dull light coming from its berry-like head which was almost twice the size of its body. The dimming light indicated the state of the creature that it was sick and she was willing to help it out.She stretched her hand under the bed and pulled out the fur she had wrapped it in. On her knees, the creature only reached her stomach which meant that she would be like a giant compared to its incredibly small size. Its eyes opened

  • Moon's Call   8- The Queen's News

Theresa's eyes slowly widened in shock and apprehension. She had heard all about the scary tales of Pragoth and how it was the territory of the Lycans Guild who protected the realm against evil creatures slipping in through the weakening veil. The Queen saw her worried look and smirked. She had intentionally decided to take the wench there hoping that one of the creatures slipping through the veil could at least save her some trouble and kill her… but she also had something else in mind."I'm sure you wouldn't mind since no one will miss you here. You, unfortunately, have no friends here so no one will even notice that you are gone," the queen continued, "and since you have grown useless here and no man seems to want you for a wife, you might be lucky enough to find your miserable self a mate in Pragoth."Theresa listened without a word. The Queen continued. "But if no lycan or any other creature refuses to mate you, you are to serve the house of Darius as a servant, I'm sure the Alph

"Hi," she said, her green tail swishing in the water behind her.Theresa sighed in relief when she saw Maris, "I thought you'd never come."Maris folded her arms over each other on the grassy shore and placed her chin on it. "I always keep to my promise. Sorry, I'm late, I had to rescue a baby porpoise from the tentacles of a nuisance giant squid."Theresa's eyes brightened. "A giant squid? And you went unscathed?""Yea," Maris smiled proudly, "I'm pretty used to it. So did you save that friend of yours?"Theresa smiled and said, "Actually, I brought it along with me," she nudged Berry out from behind the rock who had hidden when Maris's head had appeared from the sea.Berry tentatively stood closer to Theresa blinking its big eyes as it tilted its head from one side to the other to curiously observe Maris.Maris's expression was a mixture of a frown and a smile. "It sure has a large head for its size."Berry hissed and scurried back to hide behind the rock, mumbling its displeasure.

Blood sprayed wildly and gushed out of the gullet. More blood sprayed down on the wolves as the beast bellowed weakly, crazily moving around in circles as more blood pumped out of its shredded gullet. It swayed and collapsed on its belly in the stream with a heavy thud with the water washing its gushing blood downstream before it went so still, succumbing to its fatal injuries. The other wolves stepped back and watched the lone wolf who had intercepted the beast. The lone wolf with blue eyes remained perched on the beast's back, after sniffing the beast with its bloody muzzle to make sure that the beast was truly dead, thus confirming its death, he raised his head and stared at the other wolves with his piercing blue eyes that could make just about any wolf cower in fear. Understanding the unspoken language, the wolves looked up at the moon and howled in separate unison, paying homage to the lunar prowess of the moon and announcing their triumph. As one wolf was ending the howling, th

One of the sentries ran from the gate into the village and shifted into a man. Darius stood up from the midst of the men he was discussing with and beckoned the sentry closer."They have arrived, milord." The sentry informed him.Darius nodded and dismissed the sentry. He turned to his Beta, Herrick and said, "Prepare the men," and to his mate who had come out of the house to the shade of the tree they were all sitting, he said, "Let the preparations commence."His mate nodded and hurried away while Darius walked out to where the path to the Alpha's courthouse began, joining the members of his curious pack which were beginning to walk out of their houses on to the path the queen was to arrive on.Soon, the queen's foot troop of soldiers arrived, followed by the horsed lycans which were led by Lucas, and then the carriage bearing the royal emblem of the realm which was carrying the queen and her lady-in-waiting. On one of the horses riding behind the carriage sat Theresa with a hood ov

The queen smiled, obviously impressed by the name as well as the looks of the young man who undauntedly stood before her. "Hmm…Lycidas... I hear you intercepted the beast from getting away to the forbidden Marshlands. It is literally on the lips of every maiden in Pragoth."Most of the maidens present at the feast flushed in embarrassment and either looked away or lowered their gaze except Claire who could barely take her eyes off her long-time crush.Just then, something caught Lycidas’ attention and when he lowered his gaze, he noticed that the queen was actually using the severed beast's head as a footstool. "I only did my duty with the help of the pack." He simply answered, his expression unreadable."Hmmm... I must say that I am impressed, especially if all what I have heard of you is true, lone wolf. There is really no dispute that your reputation preceded you. Perhaps I could have your name included to the Phoenix's scrolls of legendary lycan

  • Moon's Call   22 - Amphisbaena

"What's the Amphisbaena?" Theresa who had risen from her chair and had watched the couple in concerned silence, finally asked, unable to contain her curiosity any longer. "I've never heard of it before.""According to history, the Amphisbaena was spawned from the blood of the Gorgon, Medusa. It's a serpent which has two venomous heads at the head and the rear, and one can hardly tell the main head from the rear head."Herrick met Darius outside the house and announced. "The two-headed serpents are approaching the village; we have to stop them now."Darius stared at the horizon then instructed: "Herrick, get Moon's Call as quickly as you can; we can't do this without him!" He turned to the other men gathered around him. "The others, with me!" He shifted into a wolf and Astrophel and the other men did the same then they all darted out of the village.Herrick shifted into a wolf and darted the other way in search of Lycidas while Elaine and Theresa came out

  • Moon's Call   21 - Theresa and Lycidas

Once they were alone, Theresa had a chance to scrutinize her supposed mate. His features were strong and his somewhat chiselled face was handsome. His eyes were beautiful and distinct and he had a fierce aura despite his quiet demeanour. She couldn't let her eyes wander to the rest of his body because she sure didn't know how to look at a man apart from his face anyway. Besides, she had almost no experience with the opposite sex, especially during courtship.Glancing down at her lap where she was nervously wringing her fingers, she tried to do away with the uncomfortable silence that hung in the air. "I'm Theresa..." She began feebly in an attempt to start a conversation. He turned to look at her, tapping lightly on the table top with his nails. "I know," He said impassively. She hesitated and asked: "And you are Lycidas?"He answered with a grunt. This was all awkward for her and she felt very nervous. "I heard you are a lone wolf; an omega to be

  • Moon's Call   20 - Berry

"I've never seen anything like it before," Medea whispered mesmerized by thebeauty of the galaxy moving slowly in its transparent head.Berry's eyes finally settled on Theresa's worried face and he began jabbing one of its three fingers at her, gibbering as if accusing her in a language only she could understand. All heads diverted to Theresa who bit her lower lip nervously and cringed, turning a bit red in the face."Does it know you?" Karen was the first to ask.Theresa nodded and stared at Berry who was still hauling accusations at her. "It is mine."Claire snorted again. "Can this get any better? The weird princess gets weirder by the minute."Astrophel shot her a glare and she frowned at him."What is it saying?" Herrick curiously asked."It is mad at me," Theresa answered."Why?" Stella asked."It is obviously because I abandoned it in my room. I even forgot I brought him along," Theresa said ruefully.

  • Moon's Call   19 - Elaine's instincts

Everyone watched Lycidas as he leaned down, picked up the chair and set it right while the boy muttered an inaudible “thank you” and nervously sat down, but warily pulled his chair away from Lycidas to keep some safe space between them. Claire shot him a glare causing him to cringe and sheepishly lower his gaze. He very well knew that Claire would cuff him severely when no one was around. She was that mean.Elaine smiled to ease the obvious tension that had hung long enough in the room. She stood up, and with the assistance of Karen, began to dish the food out but as she was about to dish out some to Lycidas, Claire surprised everyone by standing up with a winsome smile which was obviously meant to please or charm Lycidas. "Mother, I shall serve his." She offered as politely as she could.Elaine exchanged knowing looks with her husband, having telepathically communicated her concerns to him. When Darius nodded his reluctant approval, she passed the plate and ladle to her daughter who

  • Moon's Call   18 - Elaine's concern

Medea walked in moments later and happily acknowledged everyone present in the room which was not unusual of her. Medea was nineteen winters just like Claire and she was spirited and very friendly. Although she was very easy-going and fun to be with, she had the trait of wanderlust by going off on her own into the woods to discover places and new creatures. She was the daughter of a sentry, and her mother had died several years ago, leaving her to cater for herself while her father was stationed at the west gate and barely had enough time with her.Elaine had chosen to care for Medea as her ward and that had made her part of the family too, however, she was not oblivious to the conflict between Medea and Claire for reasons she didn't know yet but she suspected the fault must be from Claire because she had always known her daughter to be domineering and narcissistic. Not to mention that Claire had wanted a coterie of docile maidens who exalted, did her bidding without a

  • Moon's Call   17 - Breakfast

Elaine turned as she heard footsteps and visibly sighed in relief when she noticed it was the men. "Where have you two been? You are almost late for breakfast. You two kept everyone waiting," She was complaining when she suddenly went quiet when Lycidas appeared in the dining room behind them, rendering her speechless. "Oh, okay...now I get what you have been up to." She sheepishly said, softly clearing her throat. The men knew that she was pleased that they had been able to convince the lone lycan to come for breakfast, thus every sin was forgiven.Lycidas turned to her and acknowledged her with a subtle nod and she did the same. She turned to Herrick's pregnant mate, Karen, and said, "Karen, it seems we'll be needing an extra plate, and on your way back, please call in the others," She then whispered the last sentence so that the men didn't hear her. "...and also get Theresa in here."Karen nodded and exited the room. Elaine turned and was surprised to see Lycidas staring at her in

  • Moon's Call   16 - In the woods

Darius and Herrick moved through the dense parts of the woods, manoeuvring their way through the trees and bushes and rocks. "He should be here somewhere," Darius said."It still baffles me why any lycan in his right senses would choose to create an abode in these parts of the woods where danger lurks in every nook and cranny," Herrick said as he pushed a branch out of his path.Darius chuckled, "Well, Moon's Call is not just any lycan, is he? He seems to enjoy the thrill in these parts. I must admit that living in isolation has helped him hone his skills.""Still doesn’t make him any less outlandish," Herrick said. "And Darius... he has a name now, Lycidas.""Yeah... right," Darius replied curtly. "We might have to wait for him for a while to come around himself if we don't find him..." They ducked as a big owl swooped above them; its great wings flapping loudly. "...between you and I, this place gives me the creep," Darius said over his shoulder t

  • Moon's Call   15 - Medea

Theresa jolted out of her thoughts and turned around to find a maiden who was quite older than she was but still very young. She had thought there was no one else in the court and that she was all alone, and staring at the maiden, she realised that she had not been present during the meeting that had been held a few minutes ago.Seeing how Theresa quizzically stared at her, the girl shot her a warm smile and said, "I'm Medea, I am also a ward of the alpha."Theresa smiled back, finally glad that at least she had managed to earn herself a lycan friend. "I'm Theresa.""I know who you are," Medea quickly said. "I mean... I saw the whole thing...I was outside…” she explained when she saw the confused look on Theresa’s face. “I am not really a fan of crowded places…” after Theresa nodded in understanding, Medea asked, “So you really do heal creatures?"Theresa nodded. "Yes.""Lycans don't do that," Medea

  • Moon's Call   14 - The court

At the centre of Darius' court, Theresa stood, surrounded by a pack of lycans that she hardly knew. She felt uneasy and would have melted into the floor under the intense scrutinizing eyes if she could, but there was little she could do than wait there and await the hearing on her case.If nymphs had any disappearing gifts, perhaps, she wouldn't have hesitated to use them at this moment but there was nowhere to hide nor any place to go to. She was stuck here and that was it. She tried not to look anyone in the eye, lest all her resolve shattered and she would burst into the tears that had been welling up in her for years which she had been doing her best to keep at bay.The queen, after dumping her on a man who didn't want her for a mate or as anything had departed for Royal Isle at the break of dawn, barely bidding her goodbye, and now, here she was hoping she would fit in amongst these strange people while she silently prayed in her heart that they would be mor
