14 - The court
At the centre of Darius' court, Theresa stood, surrounded by a pack of lycans that she hardly knew. She felt uneasy and would have melted into the floor under the intense scrutinizing eyes if she could, but there was little she could do than wait there and await the hearing on her case.
If nymphs had any disappearing gifts, perhaps, she wouldn't have hesitated to use them at this moment but there was nowhere to hide nor any place to go to. She was stuck here and that was it. She tried not to look anyone in the eye, lest all her resolve shattered and she would burst into the tears that had been welling up in her for years which she had been doing her best to keep at bay.

Darius and Herrick moved through the dense parts of the woods, manoeuvring their way through the trees and bushes and rocks. Elaine turned as she heard footsteps and visibly sighed in relief when she noticed it was the men. "Where have you two been? You are almost late for breakfast. You two kept everyone waiting," She was complaining when she suddenly went quiet when Lycidas appeared in the dining room behind them, rendering her speechless. "Oh, okay...now I get what you have been up to." She sheepishly said, softly clearing her throat. The men knew that she was pleased that they had been able to convince the lone lycan to come for breakfast, thus every sin was forgiven.Lycidas turned to her and acknowledged her with a subtle nod and she did the same. She turned to Herrick's pregnant mate, Karen, and said, "Karen, it seems we'll be needing an extra plate, and on your way back, please call in the others," She then whispered the last sentence so that the men didn't hear her. Medea walked in moments later and happily acknowledged everyone present in the room which was not unusual of her. Medea was nineteen winters just like Claire and she was spirited and very friendly. Although she was very easy-going and fun to be with, she had the trait of wanderlust by going off on her own into the woods to discover places and new creatures. She was the daughter of a sentry, and her mother had died several years ago, leaving her to cater for herself while her father was stationed at the west gate and barely had enough time with her.Elaine had chosen to care for Medea as her ward and that had made her part of the family too, however, she was not oblivious to the conflict between Medea and Claire for reasons she didn't know yet but she suspected the fault must be from Claire because she had always known her daughter to be domineering and narcissistic.Not to mention that Claire had wanted a coterie of docile maidens who exalted, did her bidding without a

Everyone watched Lycidas as he leaned down, picked up the chair and set it right while the boy muttered an inaudible “thank you” and nervously sat down, but warily pulled his chair away from Lycidas to keep some safe space between them. Claire shot him a glare causing him to cringe and sheepishly lower his gaze. He very well knew that Claire would cuff him severely when no one was around. "I've never seen anything like it before," Medea whispered mesmerized by thebeauty of the galaxy moving slowly in its transparent head.Berry's eyes finally settled on Theresa's worried face and he began jabbing one of its three fingers at her, gibbering as if accusing her in a language only she could understand. All heads diverted to Theresa who bit her lower lip nervously and cringed, turning a bit red in the face."Does it know you?" Once they were alone, Theresa had a chance to scrutinize her supposed mate. His features were strong and his somewhat chiselled face was handsome. His eyes were beautiful and distinct and he had a fierce aura despite his quiet demeanour. She couldn't let her eyes wander to the rest of his body because she sure didn't know how to look at a man apart from his face anyway. Besides, she had almost no experience with the opposite sex, especially during courtship.Glancing down at her lap where she was nervously wringing her fingers, she tried to do away with the uncomfortable silence that hung in the air. "What's the Amphisbaena?" Theresa who had risen from her chair and had watched the couple in concerned silence, finally asked, unable to contain her curiosity any longer.
