Chapter 5

Envy could taste herself on Devon’s lips and it shot even more heat through her already overwhelmed body. Right now, she didn’t care that he was her new boss. If she wanted to, she just wouldn’t show up for work tomorrow night. She had other jobs. Tonight, all she wanted was more of what he was giving her… a few untamed moments to forget everything except this primal need rushing through her.

“You’re killing me,” she murmured against his lips, then joined in the rough kiss with a touch of her own passion clashing with his. For a moment they fought to see who was going to dominate the kiss, but he won hands down on that round.

“That’s not what I’m doing to you,” Devon breathed harshly, fighting the need to take her right there on the edge of the dance floor. “But I know what I’m going to do to you.”

She felt his hand come down to cup her thighs and lift her. She didn’t hesitate. Envy raised her shaking legs and wrapped them around his waist while she kept a hold on his shoulders. The position had her grinding herself down against his straining hardness. Damn, he was huge beneath her and the pressure was making her throb and ache deliciously.

“What are you going to do?” she whimpered into the kiss.

“Everything,” Devon drove his tongue in, licking at the inside of her mouth before withdrawing to nibble on her bottom lip with a groan. “I’m going to bury myself deep inside you.”

He turned and carried her to his office door. Within seconds, the door was slammed shut behind them but he didn’t stop there. Crossing to the elevator, he leaned her against the wall and raised his knee to keep her steady, so he could hit the pass code into the keypad. He pulled her back just as the doors slid open.

He’d just found a new respect for his private elevator. It only went between his office in the basement and his bedroom on the third floor. There was no opening for it to stop between the two floors. When he heard the doors pulling apart behind him, he stepped out into his bedroom and didn’t stop until he was standing beside the huge bed.

Crawling up on the mattress, Devon untangled her legs from around him and pressed down against her chest, so she knew to stay where he’d put her, as he ended the assault on her lips. Kneeling beside her, in one quick jerk, he popped every button from his shirt and tossed it to the floor.

Envy smiled seductively as she noticed laser lights reflecting off his skin. His room was painted black with hundreds of laser lights pinpointing all over the room like a projection of the universe… it even had a cloudy, neon blue nebula rotating on the ceiling just over his shoulder.

She’d seen a star machine like this once, and had secretly wanted it but hadn’t given in to the guilty pleasure. Now that she’d seen the effects, she knew she’d have to go hunt it back down. It was dazzling, accompanied by the distant sound of the sexy music drifting up from the dance floor.

Still wanting to play, Envy made as if to get off the bed, but Devon grabbed hold of her and tossed her back down into the softness of the comforter, looming over her dangerously. Her lips parted seeing the strange golden light in his eyes and she stilled for a moment, feeling that same sense of fear needle its way up her back.

Devon shook his head but didn’t say a word. It was too late for her to try to run away now. Gripping the bottom of her skirt, he slowly pulled it down her legs, baring the skimpy black panties he’d only felt earlier. Sliding his hand behind her to cup the back of her neck, he raised her to a sitting position and drew the shirt up and off her body, revealing the black bra that matched the panties.

Envy didn’t know how to take the fiery hot look in his eyes and the gentleness of his hands all in the same breath. When he only stared down at her like a raging storm ready to devour her, she nervously undid her bra and tossed it to the floor. Some instinct told her if she left it on, it wouldn’t survive him removing it. She was proved right when her thin panties ripped and were flung to the floor.

Every instinct in her was telling her to run away and she was suddenly listening very closely. Turning, she tried again to make a break from the mattress but Devon caught her around the waist and pulled her flush against him. The contact of her bare chest against his sent a fluttering in the pit of her stomach that she hadn’t felt since she was a panting virgin. New desire shot through her and her nipples hardened.

Devon didn’t release her this time. Instead, he leaned her back and lowered his face to the arch of her neck, kissing the soft flesh before nipping it with his teeth. When she trembled, he left open mouth kisses down her collarbone then dipped his head and licked at one of her nipples, letting his hands trail up to catch her under her arms in a firm hold.

Lifting her as if she weighed nothing, he brought her breast to his face and sucked one of her pink nipples deep into his mouth, humming against it.

Envy couldn’t help it as she cried out feeling her breast swell with need. He was moving against it, sucking and pulling, as if he were starving, then let his teeth graze her skin, as he slowly pulled her backwards and jerked her forward to taste her other breast. His slow heady movements followed by such quick dominating ones were making her head spin in a good way.

Her legs relaxed and one of his hands came around to the small of her back to pull her forward until she was straddling him. He kept pulling until she was sitting on the mountain that strained upward threatening to burst from his pants. Envy whimpered and she rolled her hips forward and back, rocking on him, and trying to ease the ache between her own legs, but only succeeded in making it worse.

“Oh god, Devon please,” she was starting to get loud, so she bit her bottom lip and looked up at the ceiling, knowing she was getting his pants wet. Rising up, she started to press back down but then screamed when his hand was suddenly under her rubbing, gripping and penetrating her. Grinding against his hand, she cried out in frustration.

Devon released her breast from the prison of his hot mouth and whispered, “Come for me,” against her lips and she did. He could feel her flexing and tightening her grip on his finger. She was so hot and wet… and he was so thirsty. He wanted to hear her scream again. He pressed her back down on the mattress then crawled backwards until his feet were on the floor.

Rising to his full height to stare down at her flushed and withering body, he slid his pants off and kicked them to the side. Crawling back on the bed between her legs, he placed his hands slowly under her hips.

“Close your eyes for me,” Devon demanded.

Envy slammed her eyes shut then screamed when he lifted her and buried his face between her legs. Gripping the covers in her small fist, she cried out as he gave a long hard lick that went between her nether lips, delving into her opening only to glide across it and attack the same bundle of nerves that had driven her over the edge so many times tonight.

She bucked against him trying to twist away and get closer at the same time, as he suckled hard, then kissed it before licking her again with mind-blowing pressure. She felt the sizzling waves of heat crash through her again and she came while groaning his name.

Devon growled as his name left her lips. Her scent was now all over him and he just wanted to feed on it, breathe it, and lick all the hot cream from her before he filled her with his own. When she started whimpering and clutching at his hair and shoulders, he lowered her back to the bed and crawled the rest of the way up and over her body until the head of his throbbing erection pressed against her well-kissed opening.

Taking her hands in his, Devon held them down to the soft mattress and stared down into her passion glazed eyes. When she bucked under him, causing him to enter her just enough to feel her muscles squeeze around him, he braced himself for a couple seconds, then impaled her as he thrust forward, only making it halfway in.

Both of them lost their breath as she clenched his thickness so tight he thought he was going to come out of his skin.

He growled when she bucked again. He was trying to be as gentle as he could but she wasn’t letting him. Pulling back out a couple of inches, he slammed into her giving her what she was so wantonly asking him for… the sudden invasion of him buried to the hilt within her.

Envy stilled, never before feeling so complete… beyond complete. He was so deep inside her that he was touching something that was sending a mix of tingling pain and pleasure through her and he wasn’t even moving yet. Wanting to grab him by the hair and pull him down so she could kiss those perfect lips, she tried to get him to release her hand.

Devon tightened his grip wanting her to stay still a moment while he remembered how to breathe, but when she raised her head trying to reach him, he lowered his and made love to her mouth, groaning when she wrapped one leg around his hip and ground herself against the base of his length.

Realizing she wanted all of him, he decided there would be no holding back. Letting go of one of her hands, he reached under her leg, holding it in the crook of his elbow. He pulled back slowly, and then slammed into her.

Envy dug her head backwards into the mattress feeling like she was being split apart and wanting every bit of it. Gripping his shoulder, she ran her nails down his arm and attacked his lips just as fiercely as he was attacking hers. When he grabbed her other leg and held it in the same way, she thought she was going to die as she shattered, wet heat pulsating against him with no way out.

Devon felt her pulse around him, her legs bent at the knees and hanging over his arms. Coming up on his knees, he very slowly pulled almost all the way out of her. When she tightened up, expecting him to thrust forward, he slowly fed her every inch of him at a killing pace.

She was such a little wildcat in her passion that Devon knew this was the sweetest torture. Just when she’d had enough and was leaving red streaks down his arms, he sped up giving her the rhythm she was craving.

He gazed down where their bodies were connected and watched himself slide in and out of her shaved lips. He moaned hoarsely, feeling like he was spanking her when his skin slapped against hers while he cupped her cheeks in a tight grip.

He could already read her. She liked to show her claws. But what she liked even more was to be dominated. He could give her that and more. Untangling her legs, he gripped her ribs and hauled her up to straddle him.

“Oh god,” Envy gasped at the new depth and instantly raised herself up and came back down on him… not as hard as he’d been doing it, but gripping his shoulders again. She quickly found her rhythm and pulled back from the kiss. As soon as she did, he shot forward catching her breast between his lips and sucking it deep.

Envy threw her head back and saw a shooting star go across his ceiling the same moment she came again.

When she screamed her release, Devon pushed her down, hard on him, as he ground himself upwards and swirled his tongue around her nipple. As she was coming down from her high he leaned her back, abandoning her breast and reached his hand down between them, finding the small bundle of nerves that was so swollen and tender that she flinched the second he touched it.

Keeping one arm behind her to support her, he tortured her with his fingers, as he flexed his hips in short, quick thrusts that sent her back to the high from which she had been descending. He marveled as she bowed backwards, releasing his shoulders to grip the mattress behind her and let him have his way.

“Yes, oh god Devon yes!” Envy cried out, caught between a moan of pleasure and tears. She’d never gotten off so many times in her life.

Devon’s eyes darkened attractively and his lips tilted in a sensual smile. No matter how hard she decided to fight it, he would make sure she never looked at anyone else as a lover. Knowing he was also reaching his limit watching her come, he tightened his arm raising her flush against him. Wrapping her legs around his hips, he slid them off the bed and pushed her back against the wall.

He gripped her outer thighs and he held her in place as he pulled back and slammed forward, not stopping in between strokes like he’d done before. When her fingernails dug into his skin, it only urged him on as he set a relentless pace.

The cold wall at her back and his heated body in front of her, pounding mercilessly into her tight sheath sent her senses reeling. There was no way she could keep up with this man. He was still so hard and thick inside her, still touching places she hadn’t known, had such staggering sensations. Wrapping her arms around him, she pressed her face into his neck and held on for dear life, as he continued to drive into her.

Devon felt himself about to explode, hearing her shaky breaths so close to his ear, as she nuzzled him, making strangled mewing sounds, while she fisted his hair in one of her small hands. Turning them from the wall, he stepped back to the bed and raised her completely off of him.

When she cried out at the added sensation of him sliding out of her, he whispered in her ear, “Shhh.”

Laying her on the bed, he turned her over onto her stomach as he trailed hot kisses down her back. She was so spent that she was almost limp when he reached under her and drew her up to her knees. Bringing her back flush against him, he ran his hand down the front of her thigh and spread her legs apart.

Running his fingers through her lips, he slid them upwards and caught the bundle of nerves between two fingers as his erection throbbed where he pressed it hard against her rounded cheek. Moving his other hand up to cup one of her breasts, he leaned her forward until her palms were on the mattress.

Massaging her with his fingers, he let his rock hard staff slide down her ass until he again found the entrance. Holding her steady, he thrust forward, having to fight his way in again. When she tried to come off the bed, he held her in place, watching her hair fall forward and reveal the mark he’d given her downstairs.

Setting a rhythm that had her crying his name to the stars, Devon sucked her skin between his lips, pulling her toward him and slamming into her, only to loosen his hold, as he retreated, then pulling her back to meet him again. He bit down just as she spasmed around him and he shot his hot seed deep within her as he held her in place and strained to get even deeper.

Devon loosened his teeth knowing this time he’d broken the skin. Licking at the small drops of blood, he continued to hold her still as his seed shot several more times into the deepest part of her, causing her to continue to come and pulsate around him, milking him of every drop.

Wrapping his arms fully around her, he lowered both of them back to the mattress and rolled them to their side as he stayed within her. Tightening his body around her, he caged her against him as their ragged breaths filled the room. Before their breathing had returned to normal, she was sound asleep in his arms.

Devon lay there for a few more minutes not moving. He still hadn’t gone down all the way and pulling out of her was not what he wanted to do just yet. If it had been any other girl in the past, he would have already had her halfway dressed and headed toward the door, but he didn’t want Envy to leave.

He watched as the neon stars moved around the room then glanced back at the mark he’d left on her. He knew what it meant. It was a mating mark. He wasn’t human and his possessive animal instincts had chosen his mate by marking her.

Whether she knew it or not… she now belonged to him. Sighing into her hair, he pulled the cover up around them and hugged her gently, as he cleared his mind and joined his mate in sleep.

Trevor woke up with a groan and rubbed the back of his head. He felt like he’d just been in an all-night sting outside some crazy’s house. When he opened his eyes, he was behind the wheel of his car in a different parking lot. He looked around in confusion at all the cars and frowned. Where the hell was he?

Hearing voices nearby, he looked out the car window and noticed a group of Goth dressed people leaving the building. His head jerked up to the sign above them. Love Bites… he was parked at a fucking vampire club… the one clear across town.

“Oh, ha-ha,” he drawled. “You think this is funny?” he growled looking around for his keys. Finding them in the passenger seat, he crammed them into the ignition switch and cranked the car. “Whoever you are, I’m totally ripping you a new ass,” he added, not even sure who had done this.

A girl’s giggle drew his attention and he saw a guy leaning a girl back against a car and having his way with her. The man looked like he’d written the meaning of the words Goth Psychopath.

The woman beneath him was nearly naked and had her arms wrapped around his head as he kissed her on the neck. Trevor swallowed when the man looked up, locking eyes with his, as if doing it on purpose.

Trevor quickly looked away, pretending not to notice the unearthly light in the man’s eyes… he was looking at a vampire.

Taking a deep breath, he put the car in drive and drove forward, only to hear the all too familiar thump and slap of flat tires. Trevor slammed his fist on the steering wheel and put the car back in park.

“Son of a bitch!” he nearly screamed.

His watch alarm went off and he checked the time. Gritting his teeth, he realized it was four in the morning. He got out of the car and walked around the vehicle to inspect the tires. All four of them were flatter than pancakes. Another string of curses, that would have made a sailor proud to call him son, erupted from his lips.

Finally, he just leaned up against the car hood and crossed his arms over his chest. There was only one thing left to do. He hated doing it and refrained more often than not, even if the temptation was overwhelming at times. But it wasn’t like he trusted anyone enough to call except Envy and he had to make up with her first. She should be home by now and her apartment was closer than his.

Taking one more look around, his body shifted and he took off running down the road toward Envy’s apartment. He just hoped the local dogcatcher didn’t pick him up.

Raven looked up once more from his conquest when the human shifted into a golden retriever and ran off. Curious about the creature's scent, he lowered his lips back to the girl’s neck and bit down. Other vampires came closer when the girl started struggling, screaming and beating uselessly on his back. Slowly, her struggles ceased and she fell limp on the car.

“You always get the fresh young ones, Raven,” one of the females said with a pout.

“Because I actually work for them,” Raven stated with a touch of impatience in his voice. “Now get lost.”

The other vampires quickly scurried away and Raven stared down at the sweet girl whose expression of terror was frozen forever. Taking a switchblade out of his jacket pocket, he opened it up and sliced her neck open right across his fang punctures to cover up the vampire bite just the way Kane had taught him.

He’d stolen the switchblade from Moon Dance a few weeks back… right from Nick Santo’s car as a matter of fact. It had been too easy.

None of the cocky jaguars had even seen him in their precious parking lot night after night. He was the one sending vampires to the door of Moon Dance just to get a reaction from the shifters… to give them a clue that he was coming for them.

Sneering at the thought of the jaguars, Raven lifted the girl and seemed to vanish as he pulled the darkness around him, reappearing soon after in the alley near Moon Dance. Laying her down, he placed her hand over her heart in a way that the Moon Dance stamp on the back of her hand would show like a calling card.

Standing upright to admire his handiwork, Raven took out his cell phone and dialed a three-digit number.

“Nine, one, one, what’s your emergency?” a woman’s voice answered.

“Yes, I would like to report that the body of a dead girl is in an alley near the club I just left.”

*****

Quinn stood at the top of the short flight of steps that led into Night Light, the club he and his siblings owned and ran. It had been theirs since the death of Nathaniel, their father, ten years prior. Really, they’d been too young for this kind of responsibility and had shut down the club until at least one of them was drinking age.

It was then that Quinn, being the oldest, had taken the reins and forced himself to learn all the ins and outs of the dance club business. Under his and his sibling’s leadership, it had blossomed.

When they were younger, their family had been close with the Santos family. The jaguars had been friends with the cougars then and their fathers, Nathaniel and Malachi, had opened the clubs simultaneously. They’d pooled all their money together making it a very prosperous endeavor.

That was before Nathaniel and Malachi killed each other in the middle of LA’s national forest. Luckily, the forest was too big for the authorities to ever find their bodies… same with the grave. To this day, no one really knew who the little girl was that witnessed the act.

Shaking his head to clear it, Quinn looked out at the line stretching down the block from the club entrance. He usually didn’t work the door, preferring the interior of his office so he could watch all the comings and goings via their security cameras. But Steven had informed him that he’d had to run off two vampires already since the doors opened a couple of hours ago. Until recently, there hadn’t been a problem with vampires trying to cross into their turf.

With all the murders and disappearances going on within the city and the sudden uprising in the number of vampires, Quinn figured it didn’t take a genius to put two and two together… unless you were human.

What Quinn couldn’t figure out was why a bunch of bloody vampires were trying to lay the blame on a select few clubs. It didn’t make any sense, but it was working. His club and Moon Dance, the club owned by the jaguars, were now under the close watch of the authorities. It was almost as if the police knew their secrets and were harassing them for it.

Quinn rubbed his temple then adjusted the motion to run his hand through his soft brown hair. Having the law breathing down their necks was the last thing the shifters needed when they had worked so hard to blend in with normal society.

This, among other things, had led him to his position near the door now. It wasn’t so much to keep the vampires away. No… he wanted another one to show up. When the vampire was turned away, he had every intention of following it and doing some investigating himself.

“Are you sure this is a good idea?” Steven asked from behind Quinn. He was used to Quinn being a hothead but he could usually back up his actions. “Even with the two of us, I’m not sure we can take a vampire down.”

Quinn didn’t even bother glancing behind him as he answered, “Would you rather I call Dean in to help?” The corners of his lips hinted at a grin knowing Dean gave Steven the willies.

“We’d be better off with the vampires,” Steven said, in all seriousness. “If you call anyone, I’d prefer it to be Tully.”

Quinn smirked, where Dean just rubbed Steven the wrong way, Mrs. Tully turned him into a kitten. At one point or another, all of them had ended up scratching at her back door to be let in, so they could shift back to normal and get a change of clothes. Almost every time she’d demand they stay for a while and she’d cook dinner. Quinn absolutely adored Mrs. Tully’s cooking; her roast was enough to make him purr.

On the other side of the coin was Dean. Dean had worked at the club part time since the place had opened. He was never on the schedule, just coming and going when he chose to. Quinn knew Dean pissed Steven off quite often and that was one of the reasons he kept Dean around. Watching Steven’s face turn red was always amusing. Luckily, tonight wasn’t one of those nights for Dean to antagonize anyone.

Dean was a bouncer and to look at him you wouldn’t think under those slim muscles and pretty boy looks lay one of the most dangerous people Steven had ever met. Dean wasn’t human… he was one of the fallen. Rumor was they couldn’t be beat in a fight nor could they be killed. That wouldn’t be so bad if Dean didn’t seem to hate everyone.

How in the hell Quinn had become friends with the guy was beyond Steven. Every time Dean worked, he would find the fallen with Quinn, often tucked away in his office where they shared secrets about how to rule the world… or whatever they did in there.

“Not all vampires are bad, Steven,” Quinn reminded him, not wanting the past to repeat itself.

“Yeah, yeah, I know,” Steven muttered, then raised his voice into a quiet whine. “Not all vampires are bad Steven; they just live differently and sleep with their masters.”

Despite the humor in that statement, Quinn was starting to get bored with his momentary demotion to bouncer. Instead, he let his mind drift to the journal that was hidden in the vault in his bedroom.

He’d discovered the book after the death of his father and had taken the time to read it. The words written across the pages were enough to make him angry, and he didn’t understand his father’s point at all… unless you were looking through the eyes of a mobster. He hadn’t let anyone else see the journal because he didn’t want to rekindle the short war that had taken place.

Quinn frowned, it wasn’t really a war per se but the passages had been written with that thought in mind. He just hadn’t seen the point in bringing it all to light and ruining the tentative peace they now shared with the jaguars.

Nathaniel Wilder had not been the loving man they’d thought he was for many reasons and hating vampires had been among those reasons. He had hated vampires enough to bury one alive when he’d gotten in his way. Kane had been the vampire’s name and he was one of the oldest known. He was also nothing like these vampires running around the city killing humans. Kane had been on the side of the angels.

The journal seemed to contradict itself, however, in the earlier passages. If what Nathaniel wrote was any indication, he and Kane had been close friends along with Malachi.

It was because of Nathaniel’s unknown sins that Quinn had talked Warren into separating the two families and cutting all ties. Warren had had his own reasons for agreeing to the split. They’d all been over protective of the only two girls of the group, Warren’s sister Kat and Quinn's sister Alicia. But somehow he and Kat had gotten a little too close for Warren’s liking.

Looking back, Quinn had to agree. Being older than Kat and being secretly obsessed with her had been a major problem growing up together. Besides, with him the only one knowing what lay hidden in the journal, he’d found ten years ago, it had suddenly become hard to look any of them in the eye. Another reason for his decision was that he didn’t want Kat to someday discover the chain of events that had led to their fathers' deaths.

How the book had remained hidden all that time before Quinn discovered it was completely beyond him. Their entire family had walked by it on a daily basis and never noticed.

“I still don’t see why we don’t just call Warren and join forces,” Steven said in disappointment, his voice interrupting Quinn’s train of thought. “After all, the vampires are targeting both clubs and Micah is still missing.”

“You’ll make someone a good wife one day,” Quinn smirked at Steven, trying to distract his line of reasoning. He didn’t want to dwell on their brother’s disappearance tonight.

“What?” Steven demanded, knowing his brother was probably the only man alive with enough balls to say something like that to him… well Quinn and his best friend Nick. Steven was stealthy and dangerous, just like his alter ego, and normally scared people off with one calm glance.

“All that nagging,” Quinn laughed, but his humor vanished as the smell of old blood drifted up the steps toward them. What was up with the vampires in the city? It was like suddenly every vampire they came across smelled like decay and that just wasn’t right.

When a human was changed into a vampire, it stopped the aging process and there was never decay unless the vampire was killed… then it was a fast decay, as if their bodies were catching up to the time of their original death. He’d almost bet money that these vampires were sick in some way; a recipe for zombie if Quinn ever saw or heard one.

Scanning the line of club goers, Warren spotted the vampire, when the lights from the doorway flashed across dark eyes, turning them into glowing pools of liquid fire for the briefest of seconds. The guy couldn’t have been more than twenty years old when he’d been turned and with his clothing all wrinkled; it looked like he’d slept in a gutter somewhere.

He looked like he’d done his research on being the perfect creepy Goth. Everything from the pale skin and dark hair with the added touch of black lipstick and way too much eyeliner, worked together to complete the look. All the other vampires they’d encountered within the last month seemed to have all joined the same ‘let’s dress up as Goth’ club. It was almost as if whoever was turning them had associated with that type of people to begin with.

Quinn had no problem with Gothic personalities. Quite a few actually came to the club and added an array of fascinating fashion trends always present on the dance floor. To accommodate them and get more to come, Quinn had the music changed to add a bit of the dark and mysterious harmonies.

Coming down the steps both he and Steven headed for the vampire but instead of waiting for them, the vampire took off across the parking lot, as if two cougars where chasing him.

“Smart little vampire,” Steven smirked, as he took off in the same direction.

Quinn shook his head and took off after Steven knowing he would have a hell of a time trying to keep up with him. Steven was the fastest of all of them. He could damn near outrun a were-cheetah, which were much faster than their normal feline brethren… but the vampire they were chasing appeared to be faster.

He raced down alleys and side streets keeping Steven in sight. It was several city blocks later when he spotted Steven forcing the front double doors of the huge church open. Moving a bit faster, Quinn knew if he didn’t catch Steven they would be separated and easier to pick off. To his relief, Steven was still just inside the main entrance when he caught up to his brother.

“Hot head!” Quinn hissed, “You’re gonna get your ass handed to you if you confront it alone.”

“I can’t help it if you’re slow,” Steven smirked, knowing Quinn was stronger so it evened out. “Besides… this place is so big we’re gonna have to split up anyway. You take the sanctuary and I'll take upstairs.”

Before Quinn could speak out against it, Steven was gone.

“Damn fool,” Quinn muttered, but turned in the opposite direction and started searching. Besides, Steven was smart enough, if he got into too much trouble he could always call for help. He ran down the corridor and found himself in the main room. Old church benches lined both sides of the aisle; it was like a real scary movie come to life.

‘Only real monsters exist here.’ Quinn thought to himself, as his senses went on high alert.

A slight noise made him look up just in time to see the bloodsucker come running at him so fast Quinn couldn’t avoid the blow. The hit was followed by another and another until Quinn was seeing stars. The cougar fell to the ground and growled deep in his chest. He was not the kind to be so easily overpowered but it felt like there was more than one now.

Looking up from his prone position on the floor he saw six vampires standing around him with their fangs bared. This wasn’t just a single vampire… they’d stumbled on an entire nest of them.

“Your blood tastes divine… kitty kitty,” the first vampire they’d been chasing exclaimed softly. “I’ll enjoy having you for dinner.”

Quinn lifted his head and blinked in surprise when he saw Dean actually sitting on the cross that hung from the ceiling above the pulpit. The fallen one smirked and Quinn could see his shadow on the wall behind the cross. A massive wingspan appeared on the shadow and flapped as if in frustration.

“Need some help Quinn?” Dean asked.

The vampires turned their heads and hissed at the newcomer. They hadn’t heard or smelled him enter. Four of the six ran down the aisle toward him, at the same time Dean leapt off the cross and landed hard on the floor below.

“One sucker, two sucker, three sucker, four, who’s gonna be the first one knocking on hell’s door?” Dean chanted.

Quinn didn’t resist rolling his eyes. There were times when Dean was just plain strange, if not a little demented. His counterpart, Kriss, wasn’t anything like this but was just as violent. Dean had already ripped the head of one vampire off, then roared when another jumped on his back and bit down on his neck.

He got up and tackled the vampire closest to him and wrestled him to the ground. A clawed hand latched onto his hair and yanked harshly.

“Now, now kitty cat,” the first vampire chanted. “Let my brothers feast first, then you’ll have a turn.”

Quinn’s right hand shifted just enough for claws to grow from his fingertips before thrusting it into the vampire beneath him and pulling out his heart.

“Sure thing,” Quinn grunted and shoved the heart into the other vampire’s face.

His hair was released and when Quinn turned around the creature was gone. An inhuman wail rose from the pulpit and Quinn ran toward it, for some reason thinking it was Dean. However, that wasn’t the case. The vampire that had bitten Dean was writhing on the floor in agony, while Dean systematically tore the other three apart.

Quinn couldn’t help himself and the curious side of his nature shone through when tiny pinholes started forming on the vampire’s body. Bright white light started shooting out from them as they grew bigger. They continued to gain size until the vampire was nothing more than a convulsing mass of light. Abruptly it stopped moving and when the light receded there was nothing left but an ash sculpture.

Quinn backed away and sat down against the wall, taking a deep breath. Dean joined him after a moment covered in cold blood and sporting a grin.

“Just another day at the office,” Dean mentioned.

Quinn smirked, “Only you could say that.”

Dean reached into his denim jacket and pulled out a flask. Taking a drink from it he handed it over to Quinn.

“I didn’t think fallen drank,” Quinn stated, taking the flask.

Dean shrugged and grinned, “Yeah, we’re not supposed to sin either but we do.”

Quinn took a drink and wondered how Steven was doing with his search.

The last door in the hall was locked so Steven braced his shoulder against the wood before ramming into it. The door fell inward and he was abruptly splashed with water. “Back demon, be gone!” an aged voice raged at him. Steven shook his head and glared at the priest who looked like he’d just stepped out of a bad vampire movie. “What the hell?” The priest slowly lowered his cross while placing his other hand over his heart as if he were striving off a panic attack. “You’re not one of them?” Steven growled, “Last time I checked my teeth were normal.” He shook his head trying to dislodge some of the water droplets. ‘Normal for a cougar anyway,’ he thought to himself. He cocked an eyebrow, already knowing the answer before he asked it, “Have you seen any vampires tonight?” The priest nodded vigorously, “Yes, I’ve been a virtual pris

Chapter 7 Envy sighed in relief when she saw her front door come into view. It’d been a long night and she couldn’t wait to crawl into bed. She fished out her key, which thankfully hadn’t been lost at the club. Another thing she was extremely thankful for was Kriss not asking any questions. She had a feeling he knew something was wrong but didn’t want to pry. When he asked how she and Trevor were doing, she’d given him the one-word answer of ‘Fine’ and left it at that. Kriss pulled to a stop in front of her place and put the car in park. “Here we are milady, home sweet home.” Envy grinned, “Such a gentleman,” she said then sighed, “Why do you have to be gay?” Kriss chuckled, “Tabatha asks me that at least twice a week and I tell her the same thing I’m about to tell you.” “And that would be?” Envy asked, really wanting to know the answer. “I don’t know,” Kriss shrugged, like even he was totally lost on the subject. Envy laughed and slapped him playfully o

  • Moon Dance (Blood Bound Book One)    Chapter 8

Chapter 8 Envy was towel drying her hair as she walked out of the bathroom, steam following her path like something alive. Grabbing the alarm clock from the nightstand in her bedroom, she set it for two in the afternoon and smiled in satisfaction. That would give her about seven hours of sleep. After last night’s activities, that little catnap in Devon’s bed hadn’t done a thing for her, so seven hours of undisturbed sleep sounded like heaven. Setting the clock back down beside the cordless phone, she climbed into bed. Just as she was closing her eyes the phone rang. Leaning up to look, she glared at the caller ID. It was Trevor. With an evil smirk, she turned on the answering machine and fell back on the pillow. She knew Chad wouldn’t answer the phone because he used his cell phone for everything. If someone was calling the house, then it was for her and after she’d destroyed the other phone last night, it left the cordless as the only backup. “Envy? I know yo

Chapter 9 Trevor sat on the floor in front of his coffee table in the living room going over the information PIT had faxed over to him. They’d found another body a couple of alleys over from Moon Dance with the club’s stamp on her hand and a cougar sighting in Night Light’s parking lot. The cougar sighting didn’t really bother him. He knew it was one of the Wilder’s just coming in for the night. What he wanted to know was where the cougar was coming from. There hadn’t been a reason for any of them to be out, at least not shifted. Taking another drink of strong coffee, Trevor picked up the picture of the girl and studied it again. This one was exactly like the others. A young girl, early twenties, deep slash across the neck, but that’s where the similarities ended. There was no rhyme or reason for the killings. Whoever was doing this obviously wasn’t picky about their victims. He paused at his own line of thinking when a stray thought popped in his head. Why would th

Chapter 10 “What the hell are you doing here?” Jason asked, glaring at Trevor. He knew the kiss hadn’t meant the same thing to Envy as it did to him but it spiked his jealousy anyway. “I came to talk to my girlfriend,” Trevor stated, feeling the same spike. Jason stood up, “She’s not your girlfriend after the stunt you pulled last night.” “Well, don’t think after one little kiss that it makes her your girlfriend.” Trevor sighed, seeing Envy sandwiched between Kriss and Tabatha and completely ignoring them. He glanced toward the office behind the bar wondering at the testosterone he smelled coming from the jaguar. Did Devon Santos think he had a claim on Envy? He glared at the closed door knowing damn well that if he shifted into a jaguar and fought Devon, Devon didn’t have a chance in hell of winning. Trevor looked back at Envy, who was still ignoring him. He took a deep breath and paused, then breathed in again. It was still there. He knew Envy had taken a show

  • Moon Dance (Blood Bound Book One)    Chapter 11

Chapter 11 Michael crouched in the open window of Warren’s office with the shadows of night wrapped securely around him. Kane couldn’t see him but he could see Kane just fine and wondered what had suddenly agitated his long-lost friend. Seeing Kane drop from the roof across the street and sprint toward the club, Michael knew it was time to intervene before Kane did something they both would regret. In the past, Kane had often ended up doing things that were extremely stupid. Things that had nearly gotten them killed more than once. But Kane had never stooped this low. “Some hardheaded vampires should seriously come with instruction manuals,” Michael said with an aggrieved sigh, wondering who this was going to hurt more… him or Kane. Stepping off the window ledge, he dropped soundlessly to the ground, landing right in Kane’s path. “Kane, just how long did you think I would let you get away with not speaking to me?” Michael asked, with his arms crossed over his chest.

Chapter 12 Raven felt the glory of revenge as he opened the door to the abandoned warehouse. Shoving the girls inside, he turned around and slid the heavy metal lock into place behind them. He heard a groan and looked back at his captives on the floor. Oh, this was going to be delicious in more ways than one. Envy abruptly regained consciousness when her knees hit the hard concrete. Hearing something land hard beside her, she saw Tabatha laying face down on the floor. Envy instantly reached for her friend. Gripping the blonde under her shoulders, she pulled her as far into her lap as she could. “Tabby… come on Tabby, please wake up,” Envy whispered, lightly patting Tabatha’s cheeks. When there was no response, she hugged her close, wondering how the hell she was supposed to protect her. She cringed when Raven stepped around them, brushing his fingers through her hair as he went. Her eyes widened when she heard movement deeper in the room and lifted her gaze. Looking pas

Chapter 13 Devon wiped at the blood coming from a cut above his eyes, with a massive paw, so he could see. The moment his sight focused, he caught a glimpse of Tabatha and Kriss vanishing from the scene and knew he and Envy would have to leave soon as well. The blood ran back into his eyes and he sighed knowing he was going to have to shift back to human form, if he wanted to stop the bleeding. Envy felt the fur she was clinging to vanish, instantly replaced by smooth skin. Opening her eyes, she was shocked to find herself sitting in Devon’s lap, facing him. What little bit of breath she had left in her lungs was forced out when he pulled her into a restraining hug. She opened her mouth to start demanding answers but was startled into silence, when his hands gripped her shoulders and pushed her back far enough, so he could see her face and neck. Chapter 5 Envy could taste herself on Devon’s lips and it shot even more heat through her already overwhelmed body. “But I know what I’m going to do to you.” She felt his hand come down to cup her thighs and lift her. She didn’t hesitate. Envy raised her shaking legs and wrapped them around his waist while she kept a hol
