CLARISSA
I was all dressed for work that Monday morning after the incident on Thursday, but I could not bring myself to move an inch out of the door.Denise was not making it any easier, too."I mean… never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that you would go down with your boss. You, of all people! You're the most reserved person I know, you slut!" She teased, whilst hitting the coffee maker over and over just to get it to work. It was a bit faulty, but we knew how to work our way around the thing. The sweet scent of French toast and sweet potatoes wafted across the living room from the kitchen and the coffee followed through. Denise was heavy on breakfast; I, on the other hand, could not care less.Besides, I had no appetite for food today.I leaned back against the couch, deep in thought. Should I just quit? I asked myself."It's been days now, Rissa, come on, get over it. I'm sure he's even forgotten about it. He was drunk and he has a wife, even if he remembered, I do not think he would risk his marriage to meet up with you." Denise said, coming out to lean against the wall that separated the living room from the kitchen. Her short, ginger hair was neatly tucked away in a bonnet and an apron wrapped around her small waist which I was really jealous of. She stared at me with big, river green eyes as she awaited a response."You do not understand, Denise. This could be my last day working. I’ve barely worked there for a year, it's the most well-paying job I have ever had. I mean, they pay a shitload of dollar bills for a mere cleaning job. I would not be earning half of my paycheck in a different company. It would be hard to find, if another company like this exists…" I moan, worry raising my eyebrows. She sighed, then went back into the kitchen. I glared at the wall she'd leaned away from; she should have just told me she did not have a solution for me, instead of simply walking off like that.Sighing, I stood and was about to start leaving for work, determined to avoid my boss at all costs today, when I heard her call out behind me,"Hey! Did I say you could leave yet?" She asked and I turned around. In her small hands was a plate of food, carefully covered. It was small enough to fit into my work bag but big enough to leave me full.I silently drew her in for a hug which lasted for minutes until she pushed me off her and yelled at me to be on my way.Laughing, I exited our apartment, catching a bus to work after a short wait.By the time I got to Frost Luxury Hotels—my workplace, my heart was almost beating out of my chest. For days, I had felt him inside of me. I had a feeling that was what he wanted. Whenever I closed my eyes, I recalled how he moved inside me, how good he had made me feel… And then, in the midst of my reminiscing, I would see the face of his wife, a slender, beautiful woman whom I had wronged so bad.My parents would be so disappointed at me up there in heaven. So disappointed. As I walked down the hallway, I could not help thinking that I was being watched by everyone. I mean, everyone seemed to be looking right through me, everyone seemed to know what I had done. I walked faster toward the changing room section of my work area."Okay, you need to be quick. He usually arrives by 9am. This is 7:32am, you can clean his office and floors in an hour, can't you? And then resume with the night cleaning after today…" I prepped myself as I changed into my work clothes in front of the mirror.I slipped my apron over my neck and tightened it, securing it to my body and I picked up the bucket and mop, my other hand grabbing the broom. I made my way through the hallway, hurriedly heading towards his office. I dropped my things in front of his office, taking a deep breath. My hands wrapped around the handle and I pushed, clicking the door open. Much to my dismay, he was seated on his chair peering at me through his square framed glasses. I swallowed the lump that formed in my throat and stepped in, closing the door behind me.Why was he here so early today? Of all days? I have such bad luck.I mumbled a small good morning as I lowered my gaze, ready to begin working. "We need to talk." His deep voice sounded, making me flinch. I raised my head, my eyes reluctantly locking with his.Did we really have to do this?I stared at him, waiting for him to make the first utterance, afterall he was the one that wanted to talk, left to me we could just pretend this never happened. He removed his glasses and placed them on his mahogany desk, then interlocked his fingers. "What's that your name again?" He started."C-clarrisa," I stuttered."You're fired."The words resonated in my head as the world around me seemed to blur. My head was spinning, no God please no. Not when I was just getting my life together. The clattering of the brush on the tiled floor reminded me that I was still in his office. I snapped out of my trance. "Sir p-please—"He extended his palm, gesturing that I should pause my speech. "I'll give you money to start afresh, two hundred thousand. That should be enough to get you going."My heart skipped a beat. Was he being serious? Who in their right mind would even be willing to pay this kind of amount just because of sex? Or maybe he thought I'd rat on him to his wife?He brought out his cheque book, not even waiting for my feedback before he drafted the check. He ripped it out of the page with practiced precision. The thin piece of paper hung between his index and middle finger as he shoved it towards me. My body was stiff, my eyes lingering on a piece of paper that had the potential to change my life forever. But another part of me felt humiliated, first I slept with a married man and now I was collecting money for it like some high-class escort. My arm twitched as I finally stretched to collect the check. My mouth felt numb, I didn't even know what to say. "Take this cheque, go to the bank and cash it out. When you receive the money, I don't want to see you anywhere around me, or this city. No matter what happens, I don't care if you're dying, kidnapped, in danger… I don't want to hear it. You'll never try to contact me, or anything related to me, understood?"I stood there, chest heaving. Only the sound of my sharp breath and throbbing heart filled my ears. All the possibilities came rushing through my mind.My throat felt dry, I couldn't bring myself to uttering a single word, so I just nodded meekly. He leaned back against his chair, "Good. You don't need to tender a resignation letter, I'll have that all sorted out, you may leave."I turned around and exited his office, gently closing the door behind me. Why did I feel so dirty? So used?My strides carried me to the break room. "Oh Clarrisa, are you done cleaning Mr Cole’s office, I have something I need you to do." My manager's voice rang in my ears. I faced the mirror, looking at my troubled reflection as I slowly undid the knot holding my cleaning apron to my body."I no longer work here," I finally managed to say.He raised an eyebrow, "Why? You quit? Well you have to give us a notice—""The boss fired me," I clarified as I removed my cleaning gear. I slapped the gloves on the table beside me then turned to face him."Why? What did you do? I can talk to him.""Don't bother, I'm fine. Have a great day sir." I walked past him and picked up my small handbag by the corner, then left the hotel building. I waddled aimlessly on the sidewalk, still a bit confused by what just transpired. I lazily stuck out my hands to hail a taxi.As soon as I arrived at our apartment and stepped into it, Denise shot a questioning look my way. "You're home pretty early," she said casually before she paused, her expression morphing into a more concerned one. "Wait a minute, don't tell me he—"I nodded slowly. She immediately dropped what she was holding and pulled me into a tight hug. I quickly pulled away, "but that's not the main issue Denise," I stated. She arched her eye brows, "is there worse bad news?""It's not exactly bad news… he gave me $200,000 to go away and never come back."Denise guided me towards the seat. "Hold up I need to sit down, he actually gave you that much?"I showed her the cheque, which she took off my hands. "He did, and he said to leave the city."She squealed like a little girl, bouncing on the sofa. "Girl that's more than enough! You're rich! So how'd it happen?"I scooched closer to her as a narrated the tale all over again."I was kind of worried you'd think I was selfish and inconsiderate taking such an offer without informing you."She placed a hand on my shoulder, "look I totally get it, it's not like you had much of a choice, he's a billionaire, he can quite literally evict you from this city if he felt like. I'm here with you every step of the way."I wrapped my arms around her frame as we hugged, "remember what we said to eachother at the orphanage? It's me and you, wherever you go, I'll be there," she said over my shoulders.AUBREYI stared at my brown haired reflection, a small smile forming in the corner of my lips. To me, this marked a new beginning, a new Clarrisa. Denise and I just arrived at Aurora springs two months ago, it was as far as we could get from New York. The hairdresser just finished styling my short layered bob, Denise insisted that me cutting my hair was too drastic, but I was eager for a change, in every way possible. Here, I decided to go by the name Aubrey, that way I was certain there was no way on earth anyone from my past could reconnect. As we stepped out of the salon, the crisp chilling air crashed against our faces. "Hold up Rissa!" Denise called from behind me. I turned out, "it's Aubrey," I said through gritted teeth. She shrugged. "That's going to take a while to stick, sorry." I rolled my eyes. Denise and I decided to open a boutique so that the money wouldn't go to waste and we could get a sustainable source of income without having to work for someone. Today was go
COLE "What do you mean you moved your show to Aurora Springs, Trent? You were supposed to stay in my hotel here in New York, we had everything set for you already, for fuck's sake." I spat into the phone and Trent replied nonchalantly, "I was not the one who moved the show, man. Dante did. By the way, you have a branch here too, I would be staying in the one here." "You do know the one in Aurora Springs is one of the properties Laila got from me after the divorce, right? Technically, it is hers now." "Oh. Well, damn." I sighed, running a hand through my hair, "Dante wants us all at your show. For support, or some shit. All along, I thought it would be in New York." "Tough luck, man. See you at the show tomorrow." Trent told me in that mischievous tone of his. He was totally enjoying this. "Fuck you, Trent." I cussed at him and ended the call with that. Why did they all think I would ever get back with my wife? They saw us as the perfect couple, and probably did all this to get
AUBREY Finally, it was the D-day for Trent's concert. Purity jumped from place to place, chattering about the show and my heart felt like it would bust from watching her. I was glad that I was able to make her this happy. I knew just how much Purity loved listening to his music so this was a huge thing for her. As the hours flew by, I got her ready and we made our way to the venue for the concert. We waited in a long line eagerly waiting until it was finally our turn. "Tickets please," the man said. "For three," I said, handing our tickets to him as he granted us entry. I made sure that Purity and I were holding hands. As we took our front row seats. The place was rowdy and bustling with energy. Purity was so excited, this was going to be her very first concert. When the place was fully occupied, the beat dropped, signaling the start of the concert The neon lights flashed as fog began to gush out of the fog machines, giving the stage an ethereal visual. The crowd went wild with
COLE Trent's concert was as good as I expected. I had to be frank, the punk handled his shows pretty decently. "Good show." I told him on our way to the hall for the auction. He just smiled widely and patted my shoulder, grabbing a bottle of water from a random table. He was already gulping the content of the bottle before I could react. My palm connected with the back of his head and he almost choked on the water, as a result, he glared at me as soon as the bottle left his lips. He was coughing a bit violently too. I did not give a fuck about that, or his anger. "Are you sick, man? That water could be spiked or something." "I don't give a fuck right now, thank you for your concern, could you give it to someone who needs it?" He threw the bottle at me, but I dodged it before it could come in contact with my body. We entered the hall, still bickering like high school friends. It was just the vibe between Trent and I, which was why no one paid attention to what was happening betwe
AUBREYI was injected again, despite all my struggles to break free when they held me down.By the time my eyes finally peeled open, I was lying on a mattress, the sunlight almost blinding me. I looked around and gasped audibly. The room was massive, and almost every single furniture inside was white. There were chandeliers, other fancy lights, luxury designs and even some gold items laying around. The first thought I had when I saw the items was how much money I would make if I sold them. Then I recalled that they did not belong to me, so I should not be thinking that… Well, who did it belong to?I rubbed my temple in a bid to recall at least a little of what had gotten me here, and it took a while, but finally, something clicked and I slammed a hand over my mouth in remembrance."Purity! Oh my God, Denise!" I jumped off the bed with fresh tears gathering in my eyes as I called out again, "Purity! My child, please!"I was at the metal door now, banging at it hopelessly, praying to Go
COLE It was hard to tell her those things, hard to let her know that the world she had always known was about to take a wild turn. This was why I never bought any of the women from the auction. If I wanted a whore, I knew which bar/club to go to, I knew which phone call to make. I did not need a helpless woman in my home, serving as a 'pet'. This woman was tempting enough, to be truthful, with her lithe curves and doe eyes. Her smooth skin and creamy complexion added to how enchanting she was as well. She did not look like a mother, Aubrey. Her eyes were large when she looked back up at me. She was crying, and my hands were stuffed into my pocket as I hoped she did not expect me to console or see reason with her in the slightest. "Please…" She fell to her knees then and clapped her hands in front of each other, more tears staining her now rosy cheeks. "My daughter… She got admitted to some hospital and she needs surgery, I need to go see her, I need to… I need to beg the doctor to
AUBREY"Where are you taking us to?" I asked when we were in his car. He had dismissed Denise, loading her with a stack of cash for her Uber back home.He looked straight ahead as he drove, responding, "Another hospital. Is that not what I promised you?"I kept my mouth shut at that, letting him drive us. The entire ride was silent, save for the times that my daughter fell in and out of unconsciousness. I wondered if he would eventually let me go so we could go back to our old life together… Me, my daughter and Denise. What if I just told him the truth? No. No, men like this… he could try to take my child and over my dead body would I let my child grow up anywhere close to this man. He was dangerous, a part of something that was too dark for us.I would not let my daughter grow up around that…After a long ride, we finally stopped in front of a huge hospital and my daughter got admitted there. Almost everyone knew him, from the doctors to the nurses, even the patients. He spoke to the
AUBREYWhen I got back to the room where I had been held hostage all along, I FaceTimed Denise, and said some stupid things. I asked her to get the police because I had traced this place. I knew the address, and I gave it to her.Less than an hour later, some bulky man barged into my room and seized my phone, with me kicking and screaming. And then after a few more minutes, Martha came in.I sat up on the gigantic bed which I was laying on and looked at her, my heart racing as I anticipated what she had come here to say/do.With a stern look on her face, she told me, "Get up. The boss is waiting for you at the airport."I shook my head no, refusing that this was really about to happen. How could he make me leave my child alone like this?"You must be a mother, Martha, you have to understand—""That is where you are wrong, darling. I have no children. I do not understand nothing. Five minutes is all you have until you are bundled into the car awaiting you outside. You do not realize ho

AUBREYFIVE YEARS LATER…"… over the years, Aubrey Frost has proven to be a force in marketing and business. From one store and a limited range of clothing, to one of the biggest clothing lines in America, scattered across the country, and from what I have heard, the company is set to make waves in other countries as well, anytime soon. Aubrey Frost makes billions of dollars in months, and that is asides what her husband makes from his endless chain of hotels. That family is indeed, one of the most successful, if not the most successful in New York City…" Cole nudged me, taking my attention away from the presenter who had an award to present to me. I sluggishly turned to him, wearing a huge smile of accomplishment on my face. He was grinning as well."Damn, I'm sitting next to a billionaire. Nice to meet you." He joked, outstretching his hand for a handshake. I took his hand and with all seriousness on my face, I said,"Good to meet you too. You are strikingly handsome, I must say. C
AUBREYIt was our wedding. This day was a miracle. Our miracle. I thought back to the incident at the house where I had thought for sure that I had lost Cole for good. I thought it was the end, and that my life was supposed to be that way… miserable and full of disappointments every step of the way.How then did a human who was practically submerged in so much fire escaped with only minor injuries and a breathing problem which only lasted days before it cleared up?How was I walking down the aisle now with Cole's father, who also doubled as my dad—I tried not to ponder much on that, by the way—I was walking down, ready to be handed over to Cole Frost as his wife.Yes, Luke had come to apologize, Elsa too. They had asked for forgiveness and wanted to be a part of our wedding. Cole had not wanted to forgive them, he sent them away from his office so they came to the house and begged me themselves, and I forgave them. I could not help but cry with Elsa as she cried, and I felt it when sh
COLEThe first video began to play on the screen and Dante loosened his tie, watching me all through.Laila tried to talk over the video and convince everyone that they should not be watching it, but everyone had all their attention on what was on the screen already."Oh hell, I hope that isn't who I think it is…" Ferdinand whispered, but it was still very much audible and made Dante's turn in the clip even more dramatic. As soon as he turned and his face was visible, there was collective gasps in the room, even more louder when he slammed the iron against our ex boss's head. Ricardo fell to the ground, lifeless, dead on the spot."What just happened?" It was one of the many murmurs that filled the room. Dante sat there, looking every inch of the Boss he was, even with the threat to his life playing on the screen."Ricardo was being difficult. He was an even bigger thief than I ever would be. I did you all a favour—""One which no one asked for." I reminded him, then instructed Ray to
COLE"Ready?" Ray asked me over the phone, and whilst grinning, I responded,"Ready. Today we take over the syndicate." I announced. He agreed to that, and we were still talking about some things that we would like to put in place when I heard a knock on the door. I ended the call and waited for the person to come in.Aubrey materialized at the entrance, softly closing the door as she entered into my home office. It was dark in here.. not exactly pitch black, but it was pretty dim.I could see her though. I could always see her. Well damn, now I was becoming emotional for no reason."Can I turn on the light, Sir? I want to talk to you." She pleaded. "You do not need to see me to talk to me. Say what you need to say, and leave." I told her, wheeling my chair towards her now."Oh… I, uh.. I woke up with the worst hangover, but… I recalled something… you were standing and uh… you kissed me. I don't think I was dreaming about the kiss because my lips are still sore!" She said all that at
COLELaila asked me to fire Aubrey. Of course, my first instinct was to say no. I had the word on the very tip of my tongue, but I decided to try to be patient. After all, by tomorrow, I would be executing my plan and I would finally get rid of her. I told her I would get rid of Aubrey in two days, as I did not have the time for drama at the moment."I need to prepare my child for the absence of her mother." I told her."Why can't the child go with her mother?" Laila asked in an impatient manner. "Because I want her with me. No child of mine would grow up outside of my territory." I gave her my best line, and it only took a short pause from the other end before she agreed and began to talk about how much pain she was in from the whole beating she received, and I had to beg her to not tell Dante about it first, as I would handle it in two days."Okay, babe. See you when you get back." She told me and I only hummed into the phone before ending the call.I decided to go home earlier to
AUBREY"Mommy, Auntie D said she would be visiting tomorrow." Purity announced with glee but I just frowned."What?" "She said you should call her." She handed the phone over to me, and I dialed Denise's number."You know this is very wrong timing, right?" I asked as soon as she picked up, just to be sure she had heard me when I explained that Cole never let any help bring in visitors if he did not permit it."Ray said you just need to ask him. Take permission and he would let you. I miss you guys so much and I want to come visit, is that too much to ask?" She sounded like she was dying and we were her ticket to another chance at life. The dramatic bitch. The thing was; I did not trust Denise. I did not trust Denise at all. I knew that aside from coming to see us, she had another reason why she was coming here… probably to cause a scene or two. But when I looked at my daughter, I saw the way she was really elated, and so I sighed,"I'll try to ask Cole. But please do not make a move
COLE"Do I always have to repeat the fact that you should watch your tone whenever you want to speak about my wife-to-be?" I asked after a while of being stunned by her revelation.Knowing my woman, she would not just make this accusation out of nowhere. No, she was not like Laila who would make up anything out of spite; it was the reason I was so interested in what she had to say.She rolled her eyes, and I pretended not to see that, just to let her talk, "I… Look, there's a recording, so I do not have to go on and on explaining myself." She pushed her phone into my hand and crossed her arms around her chest, which only caused her breasts to strain against her tank top with the action. She noticed I was looking, but even as her cheeks reddened, she did not drop her arms. Hell, it even looked like her eyes were daring me to do something about her stubbornness. It took a while, but I was finally able to tear my eyes off her and focus on the phone which I was given. The fucking tension
AUBREY"It's yours." Was Cole's cool response, and I almost fainted from the amount of rage that surged through my body at once.Laila had a different reaction to the news, though. She threw herself on Cole for the umpteenth time since she walked through those doors. Her excitement and the way she was rubbing it in by yelling her 'thanks' in his face were enough to make me snap."What the fuck do you mean…" I trailed off, realizing that I was only going to make it worse with that tone, so I amended instead, "You cannot give her the store, with all due respect, Sir."He tilted his head to the side in the usual way he did when he was trying to understand something."And why is that?" He questioned. I responded at once,"What do you mean why is that? I mean, you might have given me the place, but I have worked so hard to get it to where it is today, there is no way I am letting a complete stranger to take over what I have worked so hard to build. How can you even do this?""I do not care
