ELLA'S POV
"Be a good girl for mommy, okay?" I smiled softly, patting my daughter Ivy's head as we walked next door to the Thompsons'. Mr. and Mrs. Thompson, old and retired, had been absolute lifesavers since Ivy was born. They didn't have children of their own, but they had showered Ivy with all the love and attention she could ever need, making their home feel like a second home for her. As we walked up the path to their front door, I noticed the crisp morning air and the scent of blooming flowers from their garden. It was a quiet, peaceful moment, and I felt a wave of gratitude for having such wonderful neighbors. I knocked on the door, and it swung open to reveal Mrs. Thompson. She was dressed in a nice outfit, clearly ready for something special, and her husband stood behind her, adjusting his tie. "Good morning, Ella," Mrs. Thompson greeted me with her usual warm smile, but there was a hint of regret in her eyes. "I’m so sorry, but we have an event to attend today. We won’t be able to watch Ivy." "Oh," I said, my heart sinking a little. I tried to keep the disappointment out of my voice. "I understand. Thank you for letting me know." Ivy tugged at my hand, looking up with her big, curious eyes, sensing something was off. I took a deep breath and smiled down at her, trying to stay positive. "Guess I have to take Ivy to work then," I said, forcing a cheerful tone as we turned to head back home. "Yay!" I heard Ivy exclaim out of joy, her green bright eyes shining in delight. "But you have to promise mommy you're going to be a good girl," I urged as I watched her nod, jumping for joy. "Let's go," I said with exhaustion as I wiped off the glands of sweat from my forehead. Holding Ivy's hands, I made my way back to the parking lot where my rusty sienna car was parked. The sight of my car reminded me of my current financial state, my apartment's rent was due, ivy's school fees where yet to be paid and we were just a day and a half away from running out of groceries. Opening the car door, I watched Ivy enter as I closed the door and entered the driver's seat. Inserting the car key in the key hole, I twisted the key gently and tried to turn on the car but the engines just didn't budge. I tried again, this time, frustration gleaming in my veins. I was already late for work, I couldn't wait anymore. "Why won't it move?" I heard Ivy question from the back seat. "Don't worry dear, Mommy will fix it in a sec." I lied, alighting the car as I tried to check it's bonnet for errors but didn't find any. "Do you need help gorgeous," I heard a familiar voice holler from behind me. My face twisted into a frown upon recognition as I watched Kevin, a other neighbor who's apartment was opposite mine, pull out from behind. Kevin had been hitting on me ever since I've moved into this apartment. I don't still understand why he wouldn't take an hint. "You know I could help you with a lift to your workplace?" he offered, flashing what he probably thought was a winning smile.I glanced at Ivy, who was fidgeting beside me, and sighed. "Alright, Kevin. Thanks." The ride was mercifully quick but still awkward. Kevin droned on about his latest gym routine and how he could bench press twice his weight, clearly hoping to impress. I nodded along, making polite noises, while Ivy stared out the window, clearly bored. When we finally arrived at the hospital, I hurriedly unbuckled Ivy and stepped out of the car. Kevin’s voice trailed off as I thanked him hastily and closed the door. As we walked towards the entrance, Ivy looked up at me with her big, honest eyes and said, "Mommy, I don’t like Uncle Kevin. He’s boring and talks too much." I couldn’t help but laugh a little, ruffling her hair. "I know, sweetheart. But sometimes we have to be polite, even when we don’t like someone." Ivy nodded, her features basked in the sunlight's glow. As Ivy and I progressed through the double doors of the hospital, I couldn't help but notice the incoming figure of a lady in a nurse uniform. Rhea. I scoffed at the thought of her name, she had been my nightmare here at the hospital ever since day one. "Well, if it isn't Supermom," Rhea sneered as she walked past us. "Shouldn't you be focusing on actual nursing instead of playing house?" I felt the sting of her words but forced myself to shrug it off. Before I could respond, Penny appeared beside me, seemingly out of nowhere. "Morning, Rhea," Penny said cheerfully, but with a sharp edge. "Ella's doing a fantastic job, both as a nurse and a mom. Maybe you could learn a thing or two." Rhea huffed and rolled her eyes before walking away. Penny turned to me with a reassuring smile. "Ignore her, Ella. She's just jealous." I nodded, squeezing Ivy's hand a little tighter. "Thanks, Penny. Let's get to work." I held Ivy's hands once again and led her all the way into the hospital. Once I arrived at the counter, the nurse in charge of the receptionist office, Patricia, exclaimed, "Late again, Ella?" "I'm so sorry Patty," I pleaded still holding Ivy's hands. "We were stuck in the traffic," I lied, hoping she would believe as I've used the excuse thrice this week. "Okay, anyways the boss requested you visit him in his office," Patricia's voice chimed as I froze in my tracks. Fear seeped into my bloodstream, causing a shrill silence as the other nurses all turned to me. Mr Anderson, my boss, was one out of the numerous doctors the New York health organization had assigned to the hospital. He was known for his iron fist whenever he was on his job. The last time he had requested a nurse's presence in his office, she had been sacked. I bit my lower lip nervously as I turned to ivy, "Stay with aunt Rhea at the visiting area and don't leave without telling her." Rubbing my gowns hem, I made my way all the way into the elevator, past the stairs and in no time, was at the double doors of Mr Anderson's office. Anxiety pumped ceaselessly in my veins as I stepped into the office to be met by his cold gaze. A thin silence evades the air, as I took some steps into his office taking in the decors. "I was told you requested my presence sir?" I asked as polite as I could, hoping not to annoy him in any way. His grew eyebrows quirked up as he turned to me, "I hope we both know why I called you here, Ella." A chill runs up my spine as his words settled into my bones. Still frozen to the ground, I tilted my head, unable to hold his gaze. "Pls do not fire me sir," I pleaded, my voice almost fading as I tried to search for compassion in his eyes. My entire life depended on the job, if I get sacked now, I won't be able to pay me bills. "I will not sack you," He beamed, his voice, low and minimal. My heart leaped, a smile pulling on my cheeks as I turned my gaze swiftly back to him. "I decided not to sack you because I can see here that you are one of our most hardworking staffs," I could have sworn I saw his frown loosen as I listened attentively. "But you'll have to prove yourself as hardworking." "How?" I questioned holding my breath. "I have chosen you as the nurse to head our hospital's charity event this year," he finished, his frown returning almost immediately. "Thank you, sir. It's a pleasure," I smiled, revealing my teeth. This was a significant moment for me. The charity event had always been a big deal, a glamorous evening that raised a substantial amount of money for our hospital. For years, it had been Rhea's domain. Rhea, who never missed a chance to belittle or insult me, always prided herself on being the face of the event. But now, it was my turn. My joy was tempered, however, as Mr. Anderson continued, "You'll be working with a partner." My heart sank a little. "A partner?" "Yes, our hospital's biggest sponsor has offered to co-chair the event with you." I was stunned. "A billionaire wants to run a charity event? Why?" The question slipped out before I could stop it, but Mr. Anderson didn't seem to notice my incredulity. "He's very invested in our hospital's success," Mr. Anderson replied, his eyes narrowing slightly as if weighing his next words. "Ah, here he is now." I turned, my curiosity piqued. The door opened, and my breath caught in my throat. Xavier walked in. The room seemed to shrink around me as he strode forward, every bit the confident, commanding presence I remembered. His gaze locked onto mine, and I felt a jolt of shock and recognition. This couldn't be happening.XAVIER'S POV I strode into the hospital with the confidence of a man who owned everything in his sight. And why not? I practically did. The crisp, sterile smell of the hospital didn’t faze me; I was used to the finest things, and this place needed my money more than I needed their gratitude. As I entered the meeting room, my eyes immediately locked onto her. Ella. The woman who had haunted my thoughts for years. She looked as stunning as ever, and the sight of her sent a surge of possessive desire through me. I wanted her, plain and simple. I wanted to feel her, to claim her again, and this time, to stay in her life. Her eyes widened in shock as she recognized me. Good. Let her be surprised. I liked the idea of unsettling her, of making her wonder why I was here. As Mr. Anderson droned on about the charity event, I barely paid attention. My focus was solely on Ella and the way she tried to compose herself. When Mr. Anderson finally left, the room fell silent, the tension thick betwee
ELLA'S POV "And I like that." Xavier's words filled my ears, the undeniable connection of our bodies causing me to fiddle gently. My body throbbed with a lot of emotions, if anything, I wanted him to pin me to four walls of this office. For him to claim me— but I won't show it.He was a jerk, one I wasn't going to allow into my life. He had left me to myself then causing my then almost perfect promising career to be shattered. I couldn't help but feel a trace of hurt in my veins, my face hardening.Back then, I had the perfect life as an adult college student, a hot boyfriend, a best friend that loved to party. My career was promising, I was supposed to be a doctor, but all my dreams laid in dirt the moment the doctor had told me I was pregnant. We were having a practical back at school, I had fainted and my best friend, Maggie, with the help of Dave, my ex boyfriend, had both helped me to the sick bay. The nurse there had taken some test and had announced discretely that I was pregn
ELLA'S POVI was walking briskly down the hallway, trying to keep my head up despite the jumble of thoughts still lodged in my mind from Rhea’s confrontation. My hand tingled where I had smacked her and as the adrenaline ebbed away, a boiling blend of anger and satisfaction set in.Penny, who had been waiting for me at the nurse station, waved the instant she saw me. Her eyes sparkled with a hint of delight which was replaced almost immediately with some curiosity."What happened?" Penny asked, worry ringing clearly in her tone.I forced out a smile, not wanting to add to her worries. "Nothing, just Rhea’s usual nonsense, nothing worth stressing about."Penny looked at me knowingly; she saw right through my attempt to downplay it. “Ella, come on. What did she say?”Looking around to see if anyone could hear us, I sighed. "That's a story for later but I have some big news now."“Really?” Penny lifted an eyebrow curiously the worry in her tone ebbing away.Stopping in my tracks, I turne
ELLA'S POV "Whatever you’re trying to prove, Ella," He said, his voice softer, "it doesn’t change what’s between us.""I have to return back to work, sir?" I said, my head bent in an aim not to catch his gaze."You're mine, Ella." I heard him say, my mind freezing with fear as I lose myself in the ocean blue color of his eyes. The intoxicating fragrance of his body flared my nostrils, woody and dangerously seductively — I'd deduce. I couldn't help it but acknowledge the enticing feature of his body, his almost perfect body standing just an inch away from mine. The fiery burn in his eyes held me in their captivating charm, the heat of the moment causing me to snap back into reality. I wasn't his, I told myself countlessly as my body throbbed, aching for his touch. Pulling my self back, I said slowly freeing my hand from his grip, "I have to get back to work, sir." Flashing a final glance at him, I turned in an elegant swivel heading in the direction of the hospital. The glance I fl
ELLA'S POV “Don't you dare—” I threatened, ready to tear into Rhea. The sight of her made my skin crawl as I felt a sense of dread running in my veins. The sight of Rhea confronting Ivy was like a punch to my gut. I had been racing through the hospital, my mind a whirl of panic and worry, only to arrive and see Rhea, of all people, taunting my daughter. My heart pounded as I saw Rhea standing over Ivy, her smug expression a stark contrast to the tears streaming down Ivy’s face. The other nurses, those who always seemed to find a way to look down on me, were huddled around, their laughter sharp and cruel. I felt a surge of anger rise up, hot and fierce. How dare they? How dare Rhea use her position to hurt my child? Her words cut through the air, each one a blade aimed straight at Ivy’s vulnerable heart. I could barely hear the details, the anger in me blurring the specifics. All I could focus on was the sight of Ivy, small and trembling, her face streaked with tears."How could you
ELLA'S POV“Yes or yes?” Xavier’s words hung in the air, heavy and suffocating. The weight of his offer, the audacity of it, made my blood run cold. I could feel my heart pounding in my chest, each beat reminding me of the enormity of the situation. I wasn’t ready to give in to him. Not now, not ever. But as I opened my mouth to speak, to tell him exactly what I thought of his manipulative proposal, the door creaked open, and Mr. Anderson stepped into the room. My words caught in my throat as I glanced at Xavier, wondering how he would react.“Mr. McKinney,” Mr. Anderson began, his voice almost reverent. “I just wanted to make sure everything is proceeding smoothly with our plans—”Xavier’s gaze didn’t leave mine as he raised a hand, cutting off Mr. Anderson mid-sentence. “You’re dismissed,” he said, his tone commanding and dismissive all at once.I watched, astonished, as Mr. Anderson faltered for a moment, looking almost like a scolded child, before nodding quickly and retreating fr
ELLA'S POV I looked up to find myself staring into the eyes of Xavier McKinney. Of course, it had to be him. My heart leaped into my throat as his hands gripped my arms, holding me upright. The intensity in his gaze was almost too much to bear, and for a moment, I was frozen, trapped between the urge to pull away and the undeniable pull he had on me.“Ella,” he said, his voice low, filled with something I couldn’t quite place. “We need to talk.”I swallowed hard, forcing myself to breathe as I nodded. “I—okay. Just… let go of me.”He released me slowly, his fingers trailing down my arms before finally letting go. I stared at Xavier, trying to keep my composure as he stood there, his gaze locking onto mine with an intensity that made my heart race. "Why act like a stranger, Ella? We both know what happened that night wasn’t just a fluke. It was real—undeniable."His words hit me like a punch to the gut. I fought the urge to look away, to avoid the way his eyes seemed to pierce through
ELLA'S POV “Mommy why is Mr Halpern here with our things?” I heard Ivy say as she tugged at my fingertips. I stood frozen in my own tracks as I watched my most dreaded scene play before my eyes. Mr Halpern, my die-hard Landlord, was back again. He was very strict when it had to do with his rent's pay. My rent had gone due just today and he was already getting ready to kick me out.“Here are your bags,” Those were the only words I received from those cold lips of his. Mr Halpern possessed a short stout figure, draped in a disheveled grey suit and a ridiculous tangled moustache. “I don't understand, why are you kicking me out already my rent's just due by a day.” I managed to express a little out of the numerous emotions I had flowing in my bloodstream. Mr Halpern's stout figure pulled closer, “Well, if you had responded to the 35 mail I sent to you to pay your rent before it goes due, we wouldn't be having this conversation.”A smirk escaped my lips as I exhaled deeply trying to main
ELLA'S POV “This way ma'am,” The news reporter walked over to me, his finger pointing in the direction where his camera team were located.I looked back at the script in my hands, I still didn't understand why Madame Browne had insisted I did the interview when I was told only ten minutes away. Madame Browne was seated by the edge of the hall, a wicked smile playing on her lips. The flickering lights of the camera team washed her features, the malice in her gaze burning my flesh. I parted some loose strands of my hair behind my ears as I walked over to the corner where the interview was going to happen. The walls had a green background and the makeup artist walked over to me with a make-up box in her hands.“Make-up?” She asked nicely, revealing her bright set of dentition.I was just about to respond to her when Madame Browne interrupted, her tone dismissive, “No! She doesn't need that.”“The interview should start in a minute.” The director stepped in beside Madame Browne, his fi
THE NEXT DAYELLA'S POV Grin Grin!I woke up to the first ray of sunlight. The air loomed celebration and joy, the distant sound of the workers at the hall bracing my ears. My alarm clock receding ringing filled my ears as I tapped on the button to turn off before stepping out of the bed. The president's birthday was today and I had set a timer to wake up early enough to be one of the first set of people to wish him a happy birthday.I took my bath and dressed myself in a simple top and some khaki pants to go surpervise the event before the guests arrived. I traced my steps to Ivy's room to find her already awake in her pajamas. “Let's go wish Grandpa a happy birthday!” I smiled, pointing to the cake I'd ordered earlier. “Yay cake.” Ivy squeeled beside me, her sweet voice filled with joy.“Let's go.” I urged, taking the cake pack. Ivy gave out another squeel as she ran over from the bed. “Don't forget the party poppers.”Madeline, ivy's caretaker who was watching us from the side,
ELLA'S POV I walked over to the hall with the president behind me. I was taking him on a short tour of the hall and things were going smoothly. I pointed over to the stage, “That is stage and that is…”As I spoke, something in me felt uncertain. I could feel iny veins that something bad was about to go down. Madame Browne was the only person in the hall and the thought of that was unsettling.“I'll be back.” I took several steps back. I flashed a wink at Glenda telling her I had to use the lady's room before walking out of the corner into the main hall.I took slow yet calculated steps into the hallway, my heels walking slowly without making any noise. I stepped to a side and caught a view of Madame Browne's figure looking as maddened as I had left.I waited for a second, a cold sweat running down my forehead as I searched for any movements from her but received nothing. I was just about to turn and leave when I caught her walking back in the direction of a corner of the hall. She
ELLA'S POV “My mistake…was thinking the size of the event mattered more than the heart behind it. For years, I was impressed by noise. But this year, Ella reminded me that silence…can steal the show.”It would be an understatement to say my heart skipped a beat when those words escaped the president's lips. I felt the world beneath me crumble, the shock causing me to nearly lose my stance.A tear slid down my cheek. My heart was still racing from the shock. I had been so afraid of the president not acknowledging my efforts. For a split second, I'd thought I lost it all to Madame Browne and that she'd won but I was wrong.I had won.Madame Browne's efforts to ruin the event didn't work, I scaled through. The president had walked over to me and for the first time, had offered me a hug.He seemed very happy, probably the happiest he'd ever been. Once the hug ended, he turned in Ms. Glenda's direction. I hesitated for a second before I spoke, “This is Ms. Glenda she helped me design the
MADAME BROWNE'S POVThe elevator door in front of me chimed open sharply, a soft metallic swoosh brushing my ears. I stepped out of the elevator into the long hallway to my room. As expected, my maids were lined up by the walls like figurines dressed in uniforms I'd designed myself. The elevator's soft gloom layered over the purple linen of the uniform, catching my gaze from the side. The silence in the hallway was soft, almost unbearable but somehow, it felt okay. The discomfort in my veins rolled easily, my face fixed into one of those things oldsters call a warrior's mask. The president would be here anytime from now and he was going to come back to her— Ella, and that bitch, Glenda. He would witness their event and would probably give her some accolades— accolades that should've been mine.I bit my lower lips furiously, the impatience in me was cold— chilling cold. I clenched my fists trying to think of something else, something other than her.Ella.Her name was like fucking tat
ELLA'S POV I wasn't expecting to see Madame Browne at the event hall but there she was, claded in one of the most expensive dresses I've ever seen. Her eyes loomed with malice and an even darker emotion, the air shifting sharply.Smug smirks slipped through her lips as she strutted into the hall. Her presence daunted curious gazes, hushed whispers trudging through the air as she made her way into the hall.My bloodstreams tightened, the veins in my legs twitching as I maintained a straight stance. The air, if I remembered clearly, stood still with unspoken tension.I stood by the stage, the clipboard in my hands nearly snapping to the floor from the shock. The silence in the hall was thick with suspense, the whispers fading immediately as Madame Browne strutted into the hall. Her eyes wandered around sharply, inspecting each and every detail as if searching for a flaw to bicker on about. My heart raced in my chest, my gaze following Madame Browne. And just when I thought she wouldn't
Madame Browne's PerspectiveThere was only one sound filling the car: the smooth hum of the engine beneath me, as I sat in the backseat, my fingers idly tracing the rim of my wine glass. Outside, the city was a blur of lights and motion, a sea of faceless people who didn't matter to me. They were all just ants, scurrying around in a world that would never understand the power I held. The driver, a quiet man that had driven for me for years, looked back at me through the rearview mirror. "Ma'am, where to tonight?"I took another sip of my wine, let the rich flavor dance on my tongue. "To the mansion," I said coolly, my voice low, deliberate. "I need to speak with the staff, make sure everything is in order. The mansion had been mine, my domain where I could let my guard down, and relax in the knowledge I was in control. But tonight… tonight was different. The tension was palpable, an unhealthy knot threatening to tighten in my chest. It had not gone according to plan, and to say the le
MADAME BROWNE'S I thought I'd seen it all.Well, not until I saw Glenda Bacci stepping into the one bar I thought I could escape her god-damned presence. She stood by the door to the mini bar, the club's flickering lights highlighting her silhouette.A proud smile tugged at her cherry red lips, disgust burning in my breath. I tried to flash my eyes away, to hide the discomfort I faced.Anger steamed in my blood, hard and pungent. I gripped the shot glass on the table, my fingers wrapping against the hard glass as I gulped it all down. I tried to turn away, to not acknowledge Glenda's presence but the attraction was daring, like that of a moth to a flame.“Oh! Look who it is?” I said, sarcasm dripping in the base of my voice. “Little Miss messiah.” “Yes, Madame Browne it is but this time, I'm no little messiah, I am Glenda Bacci, the one woman you tried to ruin years ago.” Glenda remarked like she didn't give a damn about my presence. She’d really grown wings I must say. But, like al
MADAME BROWNE'S POVI gripped the wine glass from the table in front of me, anger steaming in my blood. My fingers tapped on it, the soft tick it made fuel my anger even more. My mand flashed back to Ella. I gripped the glass harder as it shattered, sharp pricks of glass causing me to let out a cry. The bartender in front of me panicked seeing the flow of blood as he rushed in with a first aid box. I smirked sharply, my hands waving as I gripped a side of my gown. Following that, I ripped a part of the gown open and wrapped my hands with it to constrict the blood flow.Fuck! That was my best dress, I had it shipped specially from France by an original dress maker. I sucked in a breath, rage mixing with the impatience in my mind.“Are you okay ma'am?” The bartender said. The club's overhead lights flickered across his features. “I'm going to quickly call the cleaners to help clean the mess.”I watched him scurry, leaving me all alone at the mini bar in the club. I had stepped out o
