ELLA'S POV
"I have to leave," I uttered, wiping some strands of my hair to a side as I made my way out of the elevator. In a fit of rush, my bag fell and all my documents were all littered to the elevator floor. Bending to pick it up, I hurriedly packed up the few documents my hands could reach and immediately dashed out of the elevator before Xavier could call me. Just as I stepped out, I heard the soft chim of the elevator as I heaved out. Wiping off the beads of sweats clouding my forehead, I stood, trying to calm my heart's erratic beating. I was shocked to meet him here again. Was he stalking me? It was now beginning to look mysterious, they way he keeps popping up wherever I go. First was with Ivy, now at my workplace, what next? Was he going to pop back into my life and take over? I felt a whirlwind of emotions as I touched my lips, the memory of our kiss creeping back to me. Shit. How could I be so foolish, to allow him kiss me. Xavier was a flirt, he surely had a way of knocking ladies out of their wits but why had I fallen. Over the years, since our one night stand, I hadn't however been with any other man. The memories from our passionate night still crept in, the sensations, it all came flowing back. Just before I could delve further into my thoughts, I was immediately jerked back to reality by a tap on my shoulders. "Ella," I heard a voice call out my name and I spun in the direction. Standing before me, dressed in a nurse uniform and a gown, was Penny, my best friend and also my work friend. "Are you okay? You look so engrossed in thoughts." I forced out a smile as I nodded. "Yeah," I lied, trying to hide the fact that I was very bothered. "Ella, I hope you sure know that I know that you're lying right?" Penny smiled her soulful blue eyes burning with concern. I felt a light tinge of anger, "He's back!" **** XAVIER'S POV "Ella Patterson, 24, Nurse at New York city hospital..." I watched as my assistant, Alex, recited, his eyes strolling over his phone's screen. "Enough of this nonsense Alex!" I yelled, anger purring in my veins. "You had just one job, get me all the deep details not basic infos." I hurled, hitting my fist on the desk. Rising up from the high neck swivel chair I was sitting on, I charged out of the room heading directly for the door. I am so pissed right now. I couldn't even look back at how incompetent my assistant, Alex, was. If it were fully up to me, I would have sacked him ages ago, but my grandfather had insisted on keeping him around, citing loyalty and trust. As I approached the elevator, I walked inside and waited as the doors chimed shut. Alone with my thoughts, the anger that had simmered beneath the surface started to cool, replaced by a more complex mix of emotions. The memory of our kiss replayed in my mind—the softness of her lips, the intoxicating taste of cherry. I could feel the heat rising within me just thinking about it. Ella had been on my mind ever since the night of our one-night stand. She was unlike any other woman I had ever met—attractive, soulful, and unique. After that night, I had done everything in my power to find her, but my efforts were futile. Not long after, my grandfather had sent me off to England to earn a degree and prepare to take over his company. I had returned to Brooklyn earlier this month, the city buzzing with life. One of my first stops was the club where I had met Ella, hoping to catch a glimpse of her. Just before I could head to the company for a board meeting, I ran into Ivy. The instant I saw her, I felt a connection—her green eyes, her dark hair, even her humor mirrored mine. She was undeniably my daughter. This time, I wasn’t just going to get my daughter back. I was going to get Ella back into my life where she belonged. And I was willing to do whatever it took to make that happen. As I progressed towards the elevator, I walked inside and waited as the door chimed. I was now left alone with my thoughts, my one felt anger now seemed to have hit the surface as I heaved. I couldn't still get our kiss out of my mind, the soft taste of cherry in her lips, her soulful eyes. As I continued to ponder on her features, I felt an in my pants. Ella had been on my mind ever since the night of our stand. She was unlike any other woman I've ever met, attractive, soulful and. Unique— yes, that was the word. After the stand, I had tried all my possible best to find her, but all my efforts had been to no avail. Not long after that, I had been sent off to England by my grandfather off to earn a degree to take over his company. I had arrived back into the bustling streets of Brooklyn earlier this month, had visited the club I'd met Ella. Just before I could visit the company to a board meeting, I had ran into Ivy, my daughter. The instant I saw Ivy, I felt an instant connection to her, like a child version of myself, we both possessed the same eye and hair color and even had the same humor which all just clicked. I sat in my office, staring at a photo of Ivy on my phone. Her green eyes, identical to mine, made my chest tighten with emotions I usually kept buried. "You could get them both back," I whispered to myself, the determination in my voice echoing through the empty room. Placing the phone on my desk, I leaned back in my leather chair. I had built an empire, becoming the man everyone respected and feared. Yet, Ella and Ivy's sudden reappearance had stirred something deep within me, something I couldn’t ignore. "Mr. McKinney?" Alex's voice crackled through the intercom, snapping me out of my reverie. "Yes, Alex?" I replied, my tone firm but composed. "I have the information you requested. Shall I bring it in?" "Please do." Moments later, Alex entered, her usual confident demeanor slightly subdued under my intense gaze. She handed me a folder, her eyes flickering with curiosity. "Everything you asked for is in there." "Thank you, Alex," I said, giving her a brief nod. She left quickly, and I opened the folder, my heart pounding as I scanned the pages. Ella had been through so much since that night years ago. She had struggled, but she had shown remarkable strength. And Ivy… my daughter. The realization hit me like a freight train. I closed the folder and stood up, my resolve hardening. Ella had walked away once, but I wasn’t the same man I was back then. I had the power and resources to change things. If she thought she could keep Ivy from me, she was mistaken. I picked up the phone and dialed a number. "Get me my legal team," I ordered, my voice steady. "I want a full strategy meeting in one hour." Hanging up, I looked out the window, my reflection staring back at me—determined and resolute. Ella might think she can keep our daughter away, but she has no idea who she's dealing with now. "You could get them both back," I repeated, feeling a smirk curl at the corner of my lips. And I would. No matter what it took. My phone buzzed, pulling me from my thoughts. A message from my contact: "Meet me at the usual place." I grabbed my coat and headed out, anticipation buzzing through me. The bar was dimly lit, the perfect setting for a discreet meeting. I spotted my contact in a secluded corner and made my way over, my presence commanding attention. He looked up as I approached, his eyes wary. "You have what I asked for?" I inquired, sliding into the seat across from him. He nodded, sliding a small USB drive across the table. "Everything you need to know about Ella is on there." I picked it up, my fingers brushing the cold metal. "Good. And remember, this stays between us." "Of course," he replied, his tone serious. I stood up, my mind already racing with plans. Ella thought she could leave the past behind, but she had no idea what was coming. The fire between us had never truly died, and now, it was about to be reignited. This time, I wasn’t just going to get my daughter back. I was going to get Ella back into my life where she belonged. And I was willing to do whatever it took to make that happen.ELLA'S POV "Be a good girl for mommy, okay?" I smiled softly, patting my daughter Ivy's head as we walked next door to the Thompsons'. Mr. and Mrs. Thompson, old and retired, had been absolute lifesavers since Ivy was born. They didn't have children of their own, but they had showered Ivy with all the love and attention she could ever need, making their home feel like a second home for her.As we walked up the path to their front door, I noticed the crisp morning air and the scent of blooming flowers from their garden. It was a quiet, peaceful moment, and I felt a wave of gratitude for having such wonderful neighbors.I knocked on the door, and it swung open to reveal Mrs. Thompson. She was dressed in a nice outfit, clearly ready for something special, and her husband stood behind her, adjusting his tie."Good morning, Ella," Mrs. Thompson greeted me with her usual warm smile, but there was a hint of regret in her eyes. "I’m so sorry, but we have an event to attend today. We won’t be
XAVIER'S POV I strode into the hospital with the confidence of a man who owned everything in his sight. And why not? I practically did. The crisp, sterile smell of the hospital didn’t faze me; I was used to the finest things, and this place needed my money more than I needed their gratitude. As I entered the meeting room, my eyes immediately locked onto her. Ella. The woman who had haunted my thoughts for years. She looked as stunning as ever, and the sight of her sent a surge of possessive desire through me. I wanted her, plain and simple. I wanted to feel her, to claim her again, and this time, to stay in her life. Her eyes widened in shock as she recognized me. Good. Let her be surprised. I liked the idea of unsettling her, of making her wonder why I was here. As Mr. Anderson droned on about the charity event, I barely paid attention. My focus was solely on Ella and the way she tried to compose herself. When Mr. Anderson finally left, the room fell silent, the tension thick betwee
ELLA'S POV "And I like that." Xavier's words filled my ears, the undeniable connection of our bodies causing me to fiddle gently. My body throbbed with a lot of emotions, if anything, I wanted him to pin me to four walls of this office. For him to claim me— but I won't show it.He was a jerk, one I wasn't going to allow into my life. He had left me to myself then causing my then almost perfect promising career to be shattered. I couldn't help but feel a trace of hurt in my veins, my face hardening.Back then, I had the perfect life as an adult college student, a hot boyfriend, a best friend that loved to party. My career was promising, I was supposed to be a doctor, but all my dreams laid in dirt the moment the doctor had told me I was pregnant. We were having a practical back at school, I had fainted and my best friend, Maggie, with the help of Dave, my ex boyfriend, had both helped me to the sick bay. The nurse there had taken some test and had announced discretely that I was pregn
ELLA'S POVI was walking briskly down the hallway, trying to keep my head up despite the jumble of thoughts still lodged in my mind from Rhea’s confrontation. My hand tingled where I had smacked her and as the adrenaline ebbed away, a boiling blend of anger and satisfaction set in.Penny, who had been waiting for me at the nurse station, waved the instant she saw me. Her eyes sparkled with a hint of delight which was replaced almost immediately with some curiosity."What happened?" Penny asked, worry ringing clearly in her tone.I forced out a smile, not wanting to add to her worries. "Nothing, just Rhea’s usual nonsense, nothing worth stressing about."Penny looked at me knowingly; she saw right through my attempt to downplay it. “Ella, come on. What did she say?”Looking around to see if anyone could hear us, I sighed. "That's a story for later but I have some big news now."“Really?” Penny lifted an eyebrow curiously the worry in her tone ebbing away.Stopping in my tracks, I turne
ELLA'S POV "Whatever you’re trying to prove, Ella," He said, his voice softer, "it doesn’t change what’s between us.""I have to return back to work, sir?" I said, my head bent in an aim not to catch his gaze."You're mine, Ella." I heard him say, my mind freezing with fear as I lose myself in the ocean blue color of his eyes. The intoxicating fragrance of his body flared my nostrils, woody and dangerously seductively — I'd deduce. I couldn't help it but acknowledge the enticing feature of his body, his almost perfect body standing just an inch away from mine. The fiery burn in his eyes held me in their captivating charm, the heat of the moment causing me to snap back into reality. I wasn't his, I told myself countlessly as my body throbbed, aching for his touch. Pulling my self back, I said slowly freeing my hand from his grip, "I have to get back to work, sir." Flashing a final glance at him, I turned in an elegant swivel heading in the direction of the hospital. The glance I fl
ELLA'S POV “Don't you dare—” I threatened, ready to tear into Rhea. The sight of her made my skin crawl as I felt a sense of dread running in my veins. The sight of Rhea confronting Ivy was like a punch to my gut. I had been racing through the hospital, my mind a whirl of panic and worry, only to arrive and see Rhea, of all people, taunting my daughter. My heart pounded as I saw Rhea standing over Ivy, her smug expression a stark contrast to the tears streaming down Ivy’s face. The other nurses, those who always seemed to find a way to look down on me, were huddled around, their laughter sharp and cruel. I felt a surge of anger rise up, hot and fierce. How dare they? How dare Rhea use her position to hurt my child? Her words cut through the air, each one a blade aimed straight at Ivy’s vulnerable heart. I could barely hear the details, the anger in me blurring the specifics. All I could focus on was the sight of Ivy, small and trembling, her face streaked with tears."How could you
ELLA'S POV“Yes or yes?” Xavier’s words hung in the air, heavy and suffocating. The weight of his offer, the audacity of it, made my blood run cold. I could feel my heart pounding in my chest, each beat reminding me of the enormity of the situation. I wasn’t ready to give in to him. Not now, not ever. But as I opened my mouth to speak, to tell him exactly what I thought of his manipulative proposal, the door creaked open, and Mr. Anderson stepped into the room. My words caught in my throat as I glanced at Xavier, wondering how he would react.“Mr. McKinney,” Mr. Anderson began, his voice almost reverent. “I just wanted to make sure everything is proceeding smoothly with our plans—”Xavier’s gaze didn’t leave mine as he raised a hand, cutting off Mr. Anderson mid-sentence. “You’re dismissed,” he said, his tone commanding and dismissive all at once.I watched, astonished, as Mr. Anderson faltered for a moment, looking almost like a scolded child, before nodding quickly and retreating fr
ELLA'S POV I looked up to find myself staring into the eyes of Xavier McKinney. Of course, it had to be him. My heart leaped into my throat as his hands gripped my arms, holding me upright. The intensity in his gaze was almost too much to bear, and for a moment, I was frozen, trapped between the urge to pull away and the undeniable pull he had on me.“Ella,” he said, his voice low, filled with something I couldn’t quite place. “We need to talk.”I swallowed hard, forcing myself to breathe as I nodded. “I—okay. Just… let go of me.”He released me slowly, his fingers trailing down my arms before finally letting go. I stared at Xavier, trying to keep my composure as he stood there, his gaze locking onto mine with an intensity that made my heart race. "Why act like a stranger, Ella? We both know what happened that night wasn’t just a fluke. It was real—undeniable."His words hit me like a punch to the gut. I fought the urge to look away, to avoid the way his eyes seemed to pierce through
ELLA'S POV “The part I hid all these years?” The president's tone was etched with fear, for the first time, I saw fear glistening in his green eyes.Never had I seen his breath hitch, his back arch and his pupils dilating. With every step, Mr Lucas McKinney took, the room erupted slowly in an air of shunned tension.“Which part?” His voice was smooth, like granite but also daring. The president immediately broke into laughter, “Don't mind my jokes Lucas, I was just taking Xavier into the old room.” The president's voice made me shocked. I frowned. Was all of this a joke?I was about jumping into conclusion but once I saw him laughing hysterically, I knew he was pretending for Lucas. Lucas was also laughing alongside, his presence a threat. As the president laughed, I noticed his chest heaving abnormally. His eyes were brimming with tears which I pushed back under the guise of a laugh. “How did you know we were here, uncle Lucas?” I asked him softly, swallowing softly as I tried to
ELLA'S POV “The truth?” I asked, confusion written boldly all over me.What did he mean by the truth? I scrunched my nose gently as I reached out to help adjust his pillow. “What do you mean by the truth, Mr McKinney?” I asked him again, this time, he actually responded to me.“I have to tell Xavier— he deserves to know.” He said and his voice faltered halfway into a dry cough that had him jerking his chest. Just a s he said those words, Xavier ran into the room, confused at to where the confusion in the air was coming from.“What's happenin— grandpa, you're awake!” Xavier's jumped for joy with the glass of drinkable water in his hands. He walked over to the bed and I took the cup from him to give the president.Mr McKinney took the glass from Xavier and after taking a long sip of the water, he placed the cup back on the nearby table. After doing that, his voice croaked out, “X… Xavier.”His pale fingers stretched to reach Xavier's face, his lids flickering weakly. He was shaking but
ELLA'S POV “It’s a long story but if you don't help the president now, we could have a different story to tell.”My heart thumped hard against my ribcage as my eyes met the president's figure. His skin was already pale, his entire form unconscious. Fear gripped me on all four edges of my body as I gasped out.A shiver trudged up my spine. I tried to stay calm in the moment, it was good Ivy wasn't around, she went to do her homework and I wouldn't want her to be disheartened by the sight of her great-grandfather unconscious.“Grab me a long fabric we have to make sure to free his airways to atleast revive him.” I ordered Xavier as I rushed over to a side of our bedroom where I normally kept my hospital kit and opened it. I checked his heartbeat and was shocked to find out it was beating quite well.Just as I pulled off the heart rate monitor, I proceed to take the long linen fabric had brought. “We have to tie it over his chest, first we have to take away all jewelries and heavy fabri
THE PRESIDENT'S POVI wasn't planning to bring out the 21 day challenge to Lucas but since the situation elevated quickly, I had to pull out that one last card. I thought it'd scare him, push him backwards and make him have double thoughs about becoming the next president but instead, it fueled his interest. The desperation in my son's eyes as he accepted the offer was scary, even to me but I decided it was smart not to allow it reflect. I tilted my head to look at Xavier's s I flash him a signal, he pushed me in the direction of the door. The wheelchair was very comfortable I must say. It wasn't that bad. I considered it a free three month rest rom walking and having someone, Xavier, push me around. I had pushed me discharge date just to be at the McKinney mansion. The tension might seem a lot heated but since we're in my pov, I'll tell you this for free, things aren't as they are. Lucas was dangerous, i knew dark secrets of my own son I deserved to preserve from the world. Our rival
LUCAS'S POV.My heart skipped a beat at the president's words. What did he mean by conditions? I held my breath, waiting patiently for the next series of words that would slip out from the president's lips. I pant slowly, my chest heaving as discomfort pooled down my arms. I wasn't quite yet sure what to believe, was it his words or the pungent feeling in my veins that told me this was another one of his games.“Accepted.” I said, dragging the word. The president’s expression didn't change like I was expecting. His breath didn't shuder, his pupils didn't dilate, It was almost like it was all real.“And what is that, if I may ask?” I took a step further, noticing the change in the air. The president was seated comfortably on the wheelchair, his composure unfazed. The thin stripes of light from the fireplace in the room striked a side of his face, giving the contempt in the eyes a brighter glow that had me pulsing. He stared up at me, his head tilted upright. I swallowed softly, a str
MADAME BROWNE’S POV I couldn't believe my eyes. The president was alive.Fury washed through me in waves as I gazed back at his impending figure. The president sat comfortable on a wheelchair, his gaze firm like a king surveying his kingdom. Xavier was the one pushing him around and the sight of the both of them standing there made me furious.I thought Lucas said he should be dead by now. To even think that I was actually about to start celebrating when he told me the news only to realize that it was all a lie. The president had survived the attack and as always, my plans had been ruined.I bit hard into my lower lip as I clenched my fists, the sharp pain that came from the pressing sensation of my fingernails on my palms jolting my head upright. The president had a sneer on his face as he was wheeled back into the room. His presence caused my heart to nearly skip a beat. My breaths came hitching out, ragged puffs coming out of my nostrils. I tried to contain the shock in my veins b
LUCAS'S POV I watched as the fire flickered, crackling furiously in the fireplace. The golden rays it casted brightened the room in its dimmed light. I raised my wine glass feeling the weight of her gaze on my back.Madame Browne was seated at the counter at the other end of the room, her fingers pouring white wine into a glass cup. My mind was still reeling with emotions— malice, washing through my veins. After pouring herself a topped glass of white wine, she strode out of the counter, walking in my direction. I checked the time, it was way past 10. “You can stay behind if you want.” Her voice beamed, thin layers of remorse glistening in her midnight black eyes. She hadn't changed a bit, her hair stopped just before her hips which glided, the light from the fireplace casting an exquisite silhouette of her body against the wall opposite her.I laughed, a low grunt following the few seconds of laughter that rolled out of my lips.My fingers curled against a glass of liquor. I raise
XAVIER'S POV I couldn't believe my eyes. The rage and the anger in my veins all washed away once my eyes met his. The president. He… he was alive? My jaw fell as my fingers brushed my eyes to make sure I wasn't hallucinating. The president, the same man the doctor had proclaimed dead, was standing right there, in a hospital gown on a wheelchair.I had a lot of questions bubbling up in my mind, queries surfacing as I watched him being pushed closer. The look on my face did not do enough justice to the series of emotions I had reeling in my veins. My heart skipped a beat, maybe even two. I turned my head to glare at Doctor Jiang, he wasn't shocked. He sat on his chair, tucked nearly back on the high neck swivel chair as if I hadn't pushed him against a wall some minutes ago.Slowly, I tilted my head back to see the president and confirm it all. He was still there. No, that couldn't be. Just hours ago, he was rushed into the surgery room with little chances of making it out alive and no
XAVIER'S POV After the last nurse stepped into the theater room, I watched the door close. The lights against the wall glistened red hues that sent shivers down my spine.I waited behind in the hallways waiting patiently for the feedback from the doctor. I had been sitting there for over an hour and a half now. It seemed the surgery wasn't going to finish any minute from now.My mind was filled with worries, intrusive thoughts and concerns about the president. What if he didn't make it? I shook my head softly, trying to remove the thought from my mind.Thinking negative things could only make them happen, I had to look on the bright side. For starters, the doctor had told me the president had a very strong heart that was able to withstand the last two attacks so I was sure, it would be able to withstand this one also.I ransacked my mind for other good points I could deliberate about but I found nothing— nothing but the intrusive thoughts that lingered freely in my mind. The silence
