“Jane?” my mother called out.

Jane, the housekeeper, came forward. My mother pointed at the closet and rebuked her, “Is this how you treated my daughter? Why doesn’t she have any proper clothes?”

Jane looked at the closet. “You said that we weren’t to give her any new clothes to teach her a lesson.”

My mother seemed to have forgotten about it. She only realized what exactly had happened after being in shock for a long time.

“I’m such a horrible mother.” My mother held the few articles of clothing I had and wept. “Dawn, you have to get yourself a good mother if you ever get reincarnated. I’ve let you down.”

She cried in my room for an entire night. The next day, she went to the police station with swollen, red eyes.
