Ria was grounded for nearly a month after her great argument with her mother at the restaurant. Her exams were finally over and the results still had to come out. Leela came up for a sleepover.

They both sat on Ria's beautiful round, king size platform bed. For the past one hour, they both were looking at pictures from their high school prom. Ria looked at them and felt very unhappy.

"We had so much fun in high school here. In India, they don't have proms in high school. I don't know how a medical institution will be. I bet all guys are dorks."

"I heard from other cousins that those who have to became doctors finish their tenth and immediately join a corporate college to get a medical seat. These colleges teach the syllabus of eleventh and twelfth very thoroughly. The students give a regular test every week. These colleges want students to study for hours and even make students stay for an extra hour. They don't keep any sports or other activities in such colleges. Some of them don't even keep canteen to make students stay in class." said Leela

"Oh my God, why do they do that?"

"They want their students to get good ranks for a medical seat."

"That's up to students own efforts. You must not force them."

"Yes, but a lot of teenagers from poor families get seats through these colleges so even rich families send their kids to such colleges."

"If this is the condition in high school I wonder about medical colleges. I cannot study the whole day. I need to have some fun or else I cannot focus at all. I don't care about other students. They can study like typical nerds and fight with each other for rank or marks. I was never focused on rank or getting straight A."

"I will be missing you."

"Don't tell others that I am going to India. Tell them that I will be going to Germany. I had a reputation here, cannot spoil that."

"Chris was very interested in knowing where you will be going."

"We didn't go back to school after exams. Our results were not released How did you know this? Have you been talking with that crazy stalker?"

"You like him yet you call him a stalker."

"The more I resist, the more he will want me."

"Ria, you sound crazy."

"Leela, I am Ria, the Aphrodite of Brockville High. Boys run around me but I need that one man who is completely crazy about me."

"Even if he is a complete jerk?"

"Yes," said Ria, as she got up and walked towards the window. She pushed the red drapes and looked out of the window. A couple of teenagers were singing and walking outside. The women who lived in the opposite house were playing with their children in their garden.

"So did you speak with him?"

"Yup, he called me recently asking which University was on your list. I told him that you weren't sure to continue education in America. I told him that you might go to England. He was very surprised. "

Ria sighed as she turned around. Leela pushed the photographs aside and looked at Ria.

"I know that you are unhappy with this decision but once you get a degree, you can come back. Everyone says India is the best country for doctors to get experienced. You will gain good knowledge. " said Leela.

"WHAT 1 CRORE?"

Both Ria and Leela looked at each other shocked.

"Is that your Dad?" asked Leela.

Ria slowly opened the door and looked out. It looked like Mr and Mrs Singh were sitting in the hall and having an argument. They both sat opposite each other on the white couch. A small black wooden table was between them.

"Shh! Don't your let Ria hear this," said Mrs Singh.

"Natasha, that is too much to give for a medical seat."

"I know but for Ria, we will have to give  at least this amount."

"1 crore, I could send her to China or Germany. How can they ask so much amount? During our days it wasn't this much."

"I know but now everything has changed. She will be writing Neet but still, she will have to pay this amount. They are saying we can give 30 lakhs each year and the remaining amount in the final year."

" Ria doesn't even want to study there. What if she comes back because she cannot adjust?"

"She has to try. She must. I won't let her inside if she comes back. I want her to feel like a true Indian."

"I don't think she will feel that ever. Her diet and clothes will be changed. She will never be happy with that. What if she is unable to adjust and study? For someone like her putting this much amount is absurd."

"I know but we do have money. There is no need to get worried."

"Natasha, that is our hard-earned money. We cannot waste it like that. If she fails, we will get embarrassed in front of our relatives."

"We must do this to make Ria a better person. She will learn to adjust with time. She has to let go of her prejudice against our people."

"Alright, we will send her to India but I am warning you. If Ria fails, she will return to California. You must not stop me."

Mrs Singh sighed and looked down.

"Don't you want her to change her behaviour? She is rude and arrogant sometimes. She also needs to know about practical life."

"I know but that doesn't mean that we throw her in hell. She has lived a happy and very comfortable life here. That is very important for me and I know you too want that. Pushing her through hardships will be tough for us to even watch."

Ria slowly closed the door. She laughed and ran around her bedroom. She looked at herself in the mirror.

"This is the best thing I can do for myself. I will fail and come back to California."

"Yes, you can come back here and stay forever. We might then end up at the same university," said Leela happily.

Ria got stood up on her bed and looked at Leela.

"This is it. I will clear my neet with my best marks but fail and make my parents embarrass. They forced me to go to India against my will, they must also face this." said Ria with her hands on her hips.

"I will waiting eagerly to meet you again," said Leela.

"Yes, this will be my mission next year. I will fail my first year and come back to my birthplace."

In addition to it, she also took a hot chocolate coffee for herself. She paused the music but continued to eat with her earphones attached. "Chicken! You are eating a creature that was killed. You should eat vegetables." 'I cannot believe that I am stuck with this woman here! She is worse than Aunt Anita.' Ria calmly removed her earphone and looked at her disgusted. "Plants have life. The stairs were right opposite to where the warden was sitting. This girl had black wavy hair and a plump face. • Mission: Fail My First Year   Shivay Vihar

Life at Shivay Vihaar was simple. It was a small colony with several residential apartments. The apartments were simple and not luxurious. Ria's grandparents lived in the apartment closer to the main road. As a result, the noise of the vehicle's honking would keep going on throughout the entire day. Ria and her little cousin Meenakshi shared the bedroom while the rest of the family members slept in their rooms. She and her little cousin slept on the same bed and used the same table for studying. Although the room was too small, Ria didn't say anything to anyone. Her grandfather Shivraj Malhotra was a tall man with white hair. He was a maths teacher who continued to teach poor kids in a government school. Every morning, after brushing teeth and taking bath, Ria and her grandfather would go out for an early morning walk. Luckily it wasn't his head that got affected but since he fell more than three flights of stairs, he ended up with a fracture in his right elbow. This unfortunate event changed Ria's life suddenly. Her parents were so upset by this that they decided to send her to India for her bachelor's in medicine and surgery. • Mission: Fail My First Year   The Last Minute Nervousness

Ria and her friends quickly rushed out of their hostel. The auditorium was in the building next to the second year building. The ground floor had two huge rooms opposite each other. This was where the third and final year MBBS students had their classes. The auditorium was upstairs. It was very huge with several ceiling fans. The auditorium also had a very huge platform. Several girls who wore sarees stood in a corner near the stairs of the platform in a queue. Ria rushed forward and stood last in the line. Her palms and soles began to sweat due to nervousness but she was relieved at the fact that the contest hadn't started. Clenching her lips, she turned her neck and looked for her friends. They were in the second row on the left side of the hall. A cooler was right next to them. Nancy and Nazia both gave her a thumbs-up as they sat down on a white plastic chair.

What is a beauty pageant? Is it just a public entertainment where judges select a girl whom they find to be the most beautiful? Or is it a contest beyond physical appeal? Pageants were platforms for showcasing women's empowerment, diversity, intelligence and leadership.Women who take part in pageants have utilized the platform to empower other women, others have also used pageants as a way to advance their careers. Although this was the meaning of a beauty pageant, it also somehow became a medium for fame for several young ladies but Miss Fresher was nothing at all compared to this.Ria realized that neither it gave any fame nor it would help her in her career. It looked like a contest meant only for popularity. Perhaps this was the reason why many of her batchmates weren't interested in participating. It would only boost her image among the students b

Ria thought all the students would be excited for fresher's day but she was wrong. Her classmates did not show much excitement. Apart from the girls who stayed at the hostel and the students who participated no one was excited. This shocked Ria. Back in America, at her school, the situation was quite different. Any competition would be something everyone would talk about and watch. Whether it was sports, singing, dancing, debate or quiz, many participated as per their interest and many would be excited about it. The hype for fresher's day here was not even remotely similar to that. The girls from the hostel who were rude to Ria now became quiet. Their acne was still visible. Few of them were so embarrassed about it that they sat at the back almost away from many. They only stood up for their attendance covering their faces with a cloth. Ria did feel sorry for them until she rememb

Finally tomorrow, the first-year students would have their fresher's day which was being organized by the second year students of their medical college. Many girls were already excited to see how the event would go but unfortunately, the girls who stayed at the hostel had a different story. Most of the girls from the hostel participated in the event and just a day before the event many of them had severe acne on their faces. They suspected that someone mixed something in the water of the washrooms. The hostel's warden asked the affected girls to freshen themselves and visit the dermatology department of the hospital. She also assured everyone that everything will be fine by evening but until then all students in the hostel will have to use water from the washrooms of the college. This almost made Ria throw up. The unfortunate moments she had with a rat appeared in her mind. Nazia too wasn't happy with this news because she disliked the

There was never a time in Ria's life when she thought someday she would wear a sari. She happily paraded showing off her Indo western clothes at weddings and festivals. Her mother made sure that she wore something that didn't offend anyone yet somehow her typical Indian aunties always found a way to complain something about her. Often they complained about her attitude and called it ego issues because she didn't talk much to them. At times they openly made fun of the way she stood and the way she sat.Ria remembered how her relatives made fun of her in one of the Indian weddings. She wore a very beautiful long skirt which had embroidery on a matching blouse. It was called ghagra choli. Though Ria wore a similar dress for various weddings, this time the blouse was heavy. Her relatives who saw her at the wedding did not appreciate her dress. Instead, they made fun of the way s

This was a very important day for her because she wanted to show Manisha that she is up for any challenge and there was nothing Ria couldn't do.However, by Sunday, many first-year girls suddenly became hostile to them. Many of them were very rude and few even dared to ask her if she could walk in a sari."Don't worry about that. This would probably last until the competition.
