The entire flight she had her earphones stuck with her ears. She didn't want to speak with the old lady beside her. She kept ignoring her even while eating.
As a business class passenger, she could order non-vegetarian food unlike those in economy class who had only vegetarian food for themselves.
For lunch, Ria got herself fried chicken. In addition to it, she also took a hot chocolate coffee for herself. She paused the music but continued to eat with her earphones attached.
"Chicken! You are eating a creature that was killed. You should eat vegetables."
'I cannot believe that I am stuck with this woman here! She is worse than Aunt Anita.'
Ria calmly removed her earphone and looked at her disgusted.
"Plants have life. They breathe too and give oxygen to us. Just because they don't have a mouth, ear or nose, that doesn't mean that they are not living. I think you should just drink water to live if you are all about not eating any living creature."
Before the lady could say anything, she put her earphones back into her ears and continued to eat.
The Old lady was finally quiet. After lunch, Ria closed her eyes and slept peacefully. For dinner, Ria had potato curry with rice. She took orange juice along with it.
A few hours later, the woman beside her started talking again but Ria ignored her as she continued to fill her quarantine questionnaire form.
After seventeen hours and twenty-one minutes, Ria and other passengers finally reached Mumbai.
All the passengers submitted their quarantine questionnaire and stood in a queue for the immigration counter. Ria tried her best to stay in another queue but the old lady kept following her wherever she went. She noticed another middle-aged woman with a baby, accompanying her now. It was the same woman on the flight whose baby was crying.
"Are any of your relatives here?" The old lady kept asking Ria.
"Mother, can't you see she doesn't seem to like you. She isn't talking to you. I had to make you sit beside her because of my son. He was crying almost all the time or else I would have never made you sit beside a girl like her." said the woman beside the old lady.
The man who was at the counter moved to the baggage claim centre. Ria sighed as she walked towards the counter.
"Purpose of visit?" asked the man at the counter.
"Educational."
"Oh! What will you be studying?"
"Mbbs."
"They all come here for this degree but no one stays. Even among locals, study Mbbs in India and then go outside for a job. If this goes on, we will end up with fewer doctors."
"Maybe, the modern educated people want a break from old traditional people who love patriarchy," said Ria as she gave him her passport and tickets.
"Does that mean that such people should not receive healthcare from an expert? How will they change their mindset if you just leave them like this? It is so sad that we produce the best doctors but they don't stay. Young people from even other professions want to leave their elders and go out to other countries."
Ria couldn't reply to him. The man checked her passport and put a stamp on one of the pages. He gave it back to her along with her tickets. Ria quickly moved with her suitcase and handbag to the arrival section.
Ria went to the money exchange counter and got herself ten thousand rupees. She then went around checking for cab drivers. There were two counters for it. One counter was arranged by the government which had drivers for small white cars. The other one was private and the condition of cars was much better. It also had an air conditioner which was not present in the government arranged cabs.
Ria immediately stood in a queue for the private counter. A few minutes later somebody tapped on her shoulder. Ria turned and looked behind. To her shock, it was the same old lady who sat beside her.
"Where will you be going?" asked the lady.
'This woman! If I stay here and go to the counter, she will hear my address. Argh! Now I will have to take those old cabs for myself.' thought Ria as she slowly moved out and walked towards the other counter.
To Ria's shock, the queue for this counter was much more than the other. She had to stand for nearly an hour to get to the counter.
"Address?"
"I am new here so I had written it down before travelling," said Ria as she removed a paper from inside her handbag.
"Ah in Juhu, won't take much time. You have to pay three hundred rupees."
"WHAT?? Why three hundred if it won't take much time?"
"There will be traffic."
"That is almost everywhere on earth. Who charges like this extra for traffic?"
"If you don't want our services, you can go to the other counter where you have to pay more. NEXT!"
"OKAY! Fine. I will pay you."
"Cab number is five. All are lined behind this counter. The driver is Mahesh. Show him this receipt and he will drop you at the correct place."
'Slimy git with oily hair! Seriously this is how government arranged local cabs work?'
Ria went past the counter and soon found her cab. The driver was a middle-aged man, sleeping in the back with one leg out of the window. Ria looked disgusted at the drooling driver. She hit his leg with her handbag.
The driver got up slowly and looked at her. Ria shoved the receipt in his face. He looked at the receipt and got out of the car.
"First time in Mumbai?" he asked.
"Why are asking me that?" asked Ria.
"Don't have much work here Madam. We are paid very little. So we ask them if they need anyone as a guide. My duty is for the morning here. There are other drivers for evening and night duty. I can show you the city in the evening."
"I am not a tourist," said Ria as she opened the car's door to put her suitcase inside. Ria soon realized that she was too tired to even lift her suitcase. She turned to ask the driver for help but he was already busy with his cellphone.
"Excuse me, I need your help here."
"What help?"
"I am too tired to put this suitcase inside."
"Pay me thirty rupees and I will help you."
"What?"
"I will put that suitcase inside only if you pay me. It already looks very heavy to me."
"Excuse me! There is nothing but clothes in my bag."
"That's the story of many ladies. Thirty rupees or no help."
"Fine!"
'How mean!'
The driver lifted the suitcase and pushed it on the seat beside Ria. He spitted on the ground as he closed the car's door. Ria looked at him shocked.
'Absolutely disgusting!'
"Madam, please keep your window open. There is no air conditioner in the car. You may feel hot." said the driver.
"Okay," replied Ria.
"One more request Madam."
"What?"
"On the way, I need to pay fees for my daughter. It will only take only five minutes. Can you wait in the car?"
"Alright."
The driver started the engine and Ria looked out of the window as the car moved.
She had never visited India in her entire life. Her paternal grandparents would regularly visit her during vacations in her primary school but now they were no longer alive. Five years back, they died in a car accident while travelling to Washington. Her maternal grandparents had visited her only twice and she was now going to live with them.
As she looked outside, she realised that the area near the airport had lots of trees and plants. As they moved ahead, she saw fewer plants and trees. All she could see now was buses, cars and bikes. She could hear loud horns from every vehicle every two seconds.
The driver stopped the car in front of a small school in a corner. Ria quietly looked out of the window. A man was selling some kind of snack in a stall beside the car. A group of young girls surrounded this stall and were eating together. A young man in old dirty clothes was sitting in a corner in front of the school and selling balloons.
After nearly fifteen minutes, the driver came back. Ria kept looking outside as a handsome young man suddenly went past the car. He was wearing shorts and a tight t-shirt. Ria almost drooled as she looked at his muscles but the driver began to drive and Ria couldn't look at the man any longer. She turned back and looked at the driver with a very grumpy face.
"Madam, these are models and actors. There is a beach nearby. They come here almost every day for jogging. If you come again here any day, you will see him again."
The rest of the journey went quietly. After ten minutes, they passed Juhu beach. The driver turned the car and they went inside a street. He stopped it in front of a tall building.
"Madam, this is your destination, Shivay Vihar."
He started the car as soon as she removed her suitcase and handbag.
"Hey!" called out Ria but the driver left her alone in front of the building.
'I don't know if there is an elevator. How will I take this suitcase up if there is no elevator?"
Ria somehow managed to get her suitcase through the front stairs. She looked around as she got inside. A woman sat in the corner right opposite her. She was busy writing something in a long notebook. There was no elevator in front of her and all Ria could see were rooms with a couple of doors opened. She could see two girls in the nearest room watching something on their laptop.
Ria approached the woman who sat opposite her.
"Umm hello?"
"Oh did you come here for a room? I am so sorry but there isn't a place for you."
"I didn't come here for any room. I came here to stay with my grandparents."
"Oh dear, we don't keep any old couple here. All our girls are either working or studying."
"Isn't this shivay vihar?"
"No, this is a girl's hostel. Didn't you look at the board outside?"
Ria quickly got out and checked the building again. Right near the entrance of the building was a small board that read 'Mahima Girls Hostel.'
She ran inside again and opened her handbag for the address.
"The driver told me that this was the address."
"Oh no, this happens very often here. Check your money first. They usually steal money and leave customers some other place."
Ria looked for her money and realised that she lost not just her money but also her expensive apple iPhone.
'How could such a thing happen with me? Argh! He must have done this when I was looking out of the window. What should I do now?'
The lady at the girl's hostel introduced herself as the hostel warden. She removed her cellphone and called someone."Hello Nancy, there is another girl here today lost. She already has the address to her grandparent's home. Could you please come down and help?"Ria looked at all the contents in her handbag. Both her money and iPhone were stolen. This was the first time something like this happened.'I should have kept an eye on my stuff rather than looking outside.'A few minutes later, she saw a short girl coming down the stairs. The stairs were right opposite to where the warden was sitting. This girl had black wavy hair and a plump face. She wore a simple white Kurti on black leggings."So what's the address?" she asked.Ria quickly removed the paper from the bag and gave it to her."Indian?" the girl asked.
Ria's life changed the moment her parents decided to send her to India. She had to break her friendship with Leela. To study and get a good rank in tests conducted online, she had to isolate herself from everyone. Her entire journey in flight was marred by a woman who wanted her son to marry her. After arriving, her money was stolen and the cab driver left her at the wrong location. Now she sat along with Nancy in a police station of Juhu. A man jogging on the opposite side of the road had taken a picture of her throwing coconut and called the police. This man told police that she was creating a ruckus. Since the police station was nearby, the police showed up within few minutes. As soon as the police came, they called an ambulance for the cab driver. A woman constable in a khaki-coloured sari got off from a white-coloured police car and asked them to get inside the car or else they will be forcibly taken to the police station. Nancy tried to tell them the truth
Life at Shivay Vihaar was simple. It was a small colony with several residential apartments. The apartments were simple and not luxurious. Ria's grandparents lived in the apartment closer to the main road. As a result, the noise of the vehicle's honking would keep going on throughout the entire day. Ria and her little cousin Meenakshi shared the bedroom while the rest of the family members slept in their rooms. She and her little cousin slept on the same bed and used the same table for studying. Although the room was too small, Ria didn't say anything to anyone. Her grandfather Shivraj Malhotra was a tall man with white hair. He was a maths teacher who continued to teach poor kids in a government school. Every morning, after brushing teeth and taking bath, Ria and her grandfather would go out for an early morning walk. On the way back home he would buy expensive chocolates for her and a
By the time, Ria reached her school for the exam, several students and their parents already stood in front of the school's huge black gate. The cab driver dropped them near the school and left."Grandpa, you need a place to sit until I come.""Oh, there is no need. I will just walk around.""Are you sure? The exam is three hours.""Don't worry. I have my watch with me. You see that Xerox shop in the corner, I will be there by the time you come.""Okay, take care.""I should be saying that. Take care while marking answers. Read questions two times and understand them before you mark. Don't just answer it in a hurry."
The next few days after the exam, Ria went to all the tourist spots of Mumbai along with her grandmother. They visited at least one tourist spot after every two days. Though they visited many places, three of them caught Ria's attention pretty much.At Red Carpet Wax Museum, one could see lifelike wax figures of prominent icons from various fields of science, politics, sports and cinema. Ria happily posed for pictures standing next to wax figures of Barack Obama, Michael Jackson and Harry Potter. The next tourist spot that she loved was Iskcon Temple, which was also known as Sri, Sri Radha Rasabihari Ji Temple This one place surprised Ria. Never had she expected India to have such a temple. It was located close to Juhu beach and occupied four acres of land. It was a gorgeously carved temple that was crafted with marble. Thousand o
Though Emma felt guilty about her grandfather willing to sleep on the floor with a mattress, she couldn't do anything else for him. If she hadn't played a prank on her aunt, this would have not happened. She tried her best to convince her grandfather every day but he would not change his decision. All those who had written the medical entrance exam were now looking up for enrolling in colleges. Counselling sessions were held for those who wanted governments seats. Those whose rank wasn't much but qualified for the exam could pay money and get into any university or college of their choice. Since Ria was already under the non-residential Indians quota, she would have to cough up more money even if she qualified and got a rank.To Ria's shock, she did not have the rank she thought she would. She wondered if she was going to disappoint her
Ria and her father spend the next two days checking out various medical colleges in Mumbai but in the end, her father decided to send Ria to the same medical college, from where studied MBBS. Ria's father already spoke with a person from the administrative office and got her a paid medical seat.Lakshmi Narayan Medical College was located away from central Mumbai, very close to the outskirts. Her father had already informed her that it would take two hours for them to reach college. Ria and her father had already booked a cab to travel to the college. Though Mumbai was a thickly populated city, the outskirts were filled with several trees and shrubs. As the car drove she also saw a white temple with a beautiful garden in front. Ria asked the driver to stop so that she could take pictures from her new iPhone. Although her father l
Ria filled the form for admission and gave it to her father, who submitted it along with her high school certificates to a bald man who sat outside the Dean's room.In return, the man gave him a couple of papers. On the top of one of the papers,Medical Fitness Certificatewas written. Few papers were attached to it from behind."We are taking most of the tests in this building today. You can go to the study room on the first floor. They will guide you from there for other tests. The X-ray will be taken only in the hospital." said the bald man.Ria along with the father walked used the U shaped stairs near the office to reach the floor. The study room was directly in front of them. It was a huge room with students sitting at one end and doctors examining the students
Do people face unfortunate events regularly in life? Of course, everyone does occasionally. In Ria's case, that unfortunate event came in form of a fracture of her cousin on whom she pranked. She wore makeup and a costume to look like a ghost. Her cousin slipped on the stairs while running and ended up with a fracture. Luckily it wasn't his head that got affected but since he fell more than three flights of stairs, he ended up with a fracture in his right elbow. This unfortunate event changed Ria's life suddenly. Her parents were so upset by this that they decided to send her to India for her bachelor's in medicine and surgery. A couple of other events troubled Ria's stay in India but none were unfortunate because she managed to shine in those events among her peers. She thought she could manage her walk wearing a sari on the stage in front of her batchmate
Ria and her friends quickly rushed out of their hostel. The auditorium was in the building next to the second year building. The ground floor had two huge rooms opposite each other. This was where the third and final year MBBS students had their classes. The auditorium was upstairs. It was very huge with several ceiling fans. The auditorium also had a very huge platform. Several girls who wore sarees stood in a corner near the stairs of the platform in a queue. Ria rushed forward and stood last in the line. Her palms and soles began to sweat due to nervousness but she was relieved at the fact that the contest hadn't started. Clenching her lips, she turned her neck and looked for her friends. They were in the second row on the left side of the hall. A cooler was right next to them. Nancy and Nazia both gave her a thumbs-up as they sat down on a white plastic chair.
What is a beauty pageant? Is it just a public entertainment where judges select a girl whom they find to be the most beautiful? Or is it a contest beyond physical appeal? Pageants were platforms for showcasing women's empowerment, diversity, intelligence and leadership.Women who take part in pageants have utilized the platform to empower other women, others have also used pageants as a way to advance their careers. Although this was the meaning of a beauty pageant, it also somehow became a medium for fame for several young ladies but Miss Fresher was nothing at all compared to this.Ria realized that neither it gave any fame nor it would help her in her career. It looked like a contest meant only for popularity. Perhaps this was the reason why many of her batchmates weren't interested in participating. It would only boost her image among the students b
Ria thought all the students would be excited for fresher's day but she was wrong. Her classmates did not show much excitement. Apart from the girls who stayed at the hostel and the students who participated no one was excited. This shocked Ria. Back in America, at her school, the situation was quite different. Any competition would be something everyone would talk about and watch. Whether it was sports, singing, dancing, debate or quiz, many participated as per their interest and many would be excited about it. The hype for fresher's day here was not even remotely similar to that. The girls from the hostel who were rude to Ria now became quiet. Their acne was still visible. Few of them were so embarrassed about it that they sat at the back almost away from many. They only stood up for their attendance covering their faces with a cloth. Ria did feel sorry for them until she rememb
Finally tomorrow, the first-year students would have their fresher's day which was being organized by the second year students of their medical college. Many girls were already excited to see how the event would go but unfortunately, the girls who stayed at the hostel had a different story. Most of the girls from the hostel participated in the event and just a day before the event many of them had severe acne on their faces. They suspected that someone mixed something in the water of the washrooms. The hostel's warden asked the affected girls to freshen themselves and visit the dermatology department of the hospital. She also assured everyone that everything will be fine by evening but until then all students in the hostel will have to use water from the washrooms of the college. This almost made Ria throw up. The unfortunate moments she had with a rat appeared in her mind. Nazia too wasn't happy with this news because she disliked the
There was never a time in Ria's life when she thought someday she would wear a sari. She happily paraded showing off her Indo western clothes at weddings and festivals. Her mother made sure that she wore something that didn't offend anyone yet somehow her typical Indian aunties always found a way to complain something about her. Often they complained about her attitude and called it ego issues because she didn't talk much to them. At times they openly made fun of the way she stood and the way she sat.Ria remembered how her relatives made fun of her in one of the Indian weddings. She wore a very beautiful long skirt which had embroidery on a matching blouse. It was called ghagra choli. Though Ria wore a similar dress for various weddings, this time the blouse was heavy. Her relatives who saw her at the wedding did not appreciate her dress. Instead, they made fun of the way s
Finally, Sunday came, which meant that Ria could spend some hours away from her books to practice how to wear and walk in Sari. Dinesh would bring the sari for her and she would have to try it. He would show her how to wear the Nauvari style of sari. Nazia also agreed to come along to help her. Ria felt nervous because if she messed up something today, she would look like an idiot in front of Dinesh. This was a very important day for her because she wanted to show Manisha that she is up for any challenge and there was nothing Ria couldn't do.However, by Sunday, many first-year girls suddenly became hostile to them. Many of them were very rude and few even dared to ask her if she could walk in a sari."Don't worry about that. This would probably last until the competition. Many girls from hostel are participating for fresher's day and they think you already have an edge." said Nazia as she and Ria sat on in the corner of their hostel canteen."I don't get you,"
Nazia's continuous rude behaviour with Dinesh made him so upset that he began to make more demands. Ria is now supposed to do the physiology homework's that Professor Shruti assigned them. Ria tried to hide everything from her roommate Nazia's vulture eyes but she was exposed. Nazia, who was the female class representative, was given the task to collect homework. She immediately recognized Ria's handwriting, though Dinesh submitted the papers along with his friend. Her vulture eyes looked at Dinesh furiously and before she could say anything further, he pelted across the benches quickly."Ria, he is crossing his limit. Just stop asking him for help.""Nazia, we are only helping each other now. Once the fresher's day is over, I won't need to do anything.""Please just think once again."
Dinesh agreed to show Ria how to wear the Nauvari sari. It had a typical Maharashtrian saree draping which Ria's mother often wore in Indian weddings. Ria decided to contest for fresher's day. This wanted to show Manisha that she isn't afraid of anything and no one can challenge her. This was going to be a tough task for Ria because she had never done it before. The sari that she borrowed from Nazia was torn while she tried to walk in it but this time she was determined to do her best. Luckily, their fresher's day was postponed to the next week and this gave Ria some more time to practice. Since Dinesh did not stay in the hostel, he could bring a sari for her. Ria was very careful while selecting the sari because she didn't want to look like a clown. Of all the photos Dinesh showed her which he saw online, Ria selected a red silk sari with a green blouse. Dinesh agreed to meet her
