For the past one year, Ria had to study hard at home. Her parents did not let her go out as much as they used to before. Unlike her, Leela could go out on a trip with some of the people at the school. She had gone to Las Vegas for a month and enjoyed her stay at a resort. The photographs they uploaded on I*******m made Ria jealous.
As soon as she uploaded the photographs, there was an uproar in the family. Many condemned the action of her parents. Sending Leela to a place like Vegas was the biggest mistake they had done particularly, after the prank on Anil. Vegas was a place known more for drinking, gambling and parties. To almost everyone, this place was not right for girls. Their relatives were already livid when Ria and Leela were permitted for prom. This trip made them more upset. Aunt Anita told them to bring her back instantly and keep her grounded like Ria but Leela's mother stood up to them.
According to her, the entire prank was planned by Ria and Leela even tried to stop her. This made Ria's parents angry. They told Leela's mother in front of everyone that both planned this and both wore costumes to scare Anil. They clearly told everyone that both did not plan to hurt Anil. They also told that they are making sure that Ria becomes a better person and they have decided to send her to Mumbai for MBBS.
Leela's mother, who was upset with their revelation continued to argue with them. There was a discord now between both the families. After Leela came back from the trip, she was made to delete Ria's number from her phone. Her parents also made her unfollow Ria on various social media accounts. Ria was deeply hurt as Leela was the only person among all the cousins with whom she could connect. However, the rest of the year passed without meeting any of her relatives. Thankfully, her studies became an excuse this time to not meet them. Even if Ria had gone to any event, she didn't know how she would be treated.
Finally, it was the day when she had to go to the airport. Her ticket was booked and confirmed in advance a few days back. Her flight to Mumbai was scheduled for the early morning. Ria wore a Violet jumpsuit and sat in the car along with her parents. They hugged her before she went inside the airport. They looked very sad and unhappy. Ria said goodbye to them and went inside.
At the check-in counter, she went to Air India Section with her ticket and passport. They scanned and measured the weight of her suitcase and handbag. After this procedure, she was given a boarding pass. It was a small document which had flight number and seat number on it along with the right gate where she had to sit along with passengers of the same flight before leaving the country. Before going to her boarding gate Ria first proceeded to the immigration counter where her passport was checked.
It was still an hour before her departure and Ria went around the shops at the airport. She drank her favourite hot chocolate coffee from Starbucks and even bought a funky scarf that went along with her outfit. Half an hour later all the passengers from the same flight had to leave the country.
Ria looked around as she stepped inside the Air India Boeing 787. A pretty flight attendant in a red sari stood in front of her.
"Good morning, can I have a look at your boarding pass ?"
Ria gave the lady her boarding pass.
"Oh, business class! Your seat is in the third row on the right side." said the lady pointing to a seat in a corner
"Thanks."
Ria went ahead with her suitcase to her designated seat. She first opened the luggage compartment above it and tried lifting her suitcase.
"Damn! I shouldn't have filled it with so many clothes," said Ria.
She remembered how her mother told her not to stuff all her clothes because in India on street, particularly where she will be staying, crop tops and shorts were not a norm. She would look like an outcast and many would stare at her. She also told her that most medical colleges do not allow western clothes.
People were now standing in a line waiting for Ria to move but no one helped her. A male flight attendant spotted her and rushed forward to help her. He lifted her suitcase and pushed it inside the luggage compartment very smoothly.
Thanking him, Ria sat down holding her small handbag in her lap. She looked outside the window as realised that she will be soon leaving her birthplace. She felt sad and angry.
The thought of staying in India made her very nervous. Many people have told her that life in India is very tough. It was a country with a huge population and poverty. Most Indian people had a mindset similar to Anita aunty. She was so used to her freedom in America but now she will have to live in India and then again give a medical council exam in California.
"Hello, are you Indian?"
Ria turned and saw an old woman in a white sari.
"Yes," replied Ria.
The woman sat down in the seat beside her.
"Why is your hair brown? Is your mother American?"
"No," said Ria, annoyed.
"Then why is your hair brown?"
"It is brown because I like brown hair."
"You don't black?"
"No."
'Who the hell is this woman? Can't she mind her own business?'
"Your parents allowed you to have brown hair?"
Ria looked at her shocked.
"No. They love me and give me the freedom to do anything," said Ria, keeping her anger in control.
"How old are you?"
"Eighteen."
"Oh good. Do you know how to cook?"
"Yes, I make pasta, bologna, chicken, lobster rolls and many other dishes."
"Lobster? Ram! Ram!" said the old woman keeping a hand on her chest.
For nearly five minutes, they did not speak to each other
'Thank God. She finally shut her mouth.'
"Do you cook anything Indian?" the old lady asked.
'Maybe I need to be more aggressive.'
"Oh no, I can't do that. I always faint while making any Indian food. There is also so much spice that the smell goes straight in my nostrils and most of the time I start sneezing."
"Don't worry you will learn with time."
"Sorry?"
"Look, you are eighteen already. That's the right age to get married. You are very pretty. My younger son is very good looking also. He earns a lot. He will be perfect for you. What does your father do?"
Ria immediately got up and called a woman flight attendant.
"Excuse can I sit somewhere else? I am very uncomfortable here."
"We have only one seat left and that is next to a woman in the last row."
Ria turned back and looked at the woman. To her shock, this young woman was holding a crying baby in her arms.
'Argh!!! What headache is this? How will I manage this journey now?"
"It's alright, can I get the earphones please?"
"Sure. I will just give them."
Ria stood until she got the earphones. She plugged it into the socket, beside her seat as she sat down.
"You didn't tell me what your father does? How much money and jewellery can he give?"
Ria ignored her and watched the video which just began to play on the screen in front of her seat.
The entire flight she had her earphones stuck with her ears. She didn't want to speak with the old lady beside her. She kept ignoring her even while eating. As a business class passenger, she could order non-vegetarian food unlike those in economy class who had only vegetarian food for themselves. For lunch, Ria got herself fried chicken. In addition to it, she also took a hot chocolate coffee for herself. She paused the music but continued to eat with her earphones attached. "Chicken! You are eating a creature that was killed. You should eat vegetables." 'I cannot believe that I am stuck with this woman here! She is worse than Aunt Anita.' Ria calmly removed her earphone and looked at her disgusted. "Plants have life. They breathe too and give oxygen to us. Just because they do
The lady at the girl's hostel introduced herself as the hostel warden. She removed her cellphone and called someone."Hello Nancy, there is another girl here today lost. She already has the address to her grandparent's home. Could you please come down and help?"Ria looked at all the contents in her handbag. Both her money and iPhone were stolen. This was the first time something like this happened.'I should have kept an eye on my stuff rather than looking outside.'A few minutes later, she saw a short girl coming down the stairs. The stairs were right opposite to where the warden was sitting. This girl had black wavy hair and a plump face. She wore a simple white Kurti on black leggings."So what's the address?" she asked.Ria quickly removed the paper from the bag and gave it to her."Indian?" the girl asked.
Ria's life changed the moment her parents decided to send her to India. She had to break her friendship with Leela. To study and get a good rank in tests conducted online, she had to isolate herself from everyone. Her entire journey in flight was marred by a woman who wanted her son to marry her. After arriving, her money was stolen and the cab driver left her at the wrong location. Now she sat along with Nancy in a police station of Juhu. A man jogging on the opposite side of the road had taken a picture of her throwing coconut and called the police. This man told police that she was creating a ruckus. Since the police station was nearby, the police showed up within few minutes. As soon as the police came, they called an ambulance for the cab driver. A woman constable in a khaki-coloured sari got off from a white-coloured police car and asked them to get inside the car or else they will be forcibly taken to the police station. Nancy tried to tell them the truth
Life at Shivay Vihaar was simple. It was a small colony with several residential apartments. The apartments were simple and not luxurious. Ria's grandparents lived in the apartment closer to the main road. As a result, the noise of the vehicle's honking would keep going on throughout the entire day. Ria and her little cousin Meenakshi shared the bedroom while the rest of the family members slept in their rooms. She and her little cousin slept on the same bed and used the same table for studying. Although the room was too small, Ria didn't say anything to anyone. Her grandfather Shivraj Malhotra was a tall man with white hair. He was a maths teacher who continued to teach poor kids in a government school. Every morning, after brushing teeth and taking bath, Ria and her grandfather would go out for an early morning walk. On the way back home he would buy expensive chocolates for her and a
By the time, Ria reached her school for the exam, several students and their parents already stood in front of the school's huge black gate. The cab driver dropped them near the school and left."Grandpa, you need a place to sit until I come.""Oh, there is no need. I will just walk around.""Are you sure? The exam is three hours.""Don't worry. I have my watch with me. You see that Xerox shop in the corner, I will be there by the time you come.""Okay, take care.""I should be saying that. Take care while marking answers. Read questions two times and understand them before you mark. Don't just answer it in a hurry."
The next few days after the exam, Ria went to all the tourist spots of Mumbai along with her grandmother. They visited at least one tourist spot after every two days. Though they visited many places, three of them caught Ria's attention pretty much.At Red Carpet Wax Museum, one could see lifelike wax figures of prominent icons from various fields of science, politics, sports and cinema. Ria happily posed for pictures standing next to wax figures of Barack Obama, Michael Jackson and Harry Potter. The next tourist spot that she loved was Iskcon Temple, which was also known as Sri, Sri Radha Rasabihari Ji Temple This one place surprised Ria. Never had she expected India to have such a temple. It was located close to Juhu beach and occupied four acres of land. It was a gorgeously carved temple that was crafted with marble. Thousand o
Though Emma felt guilty about her grandfather willing to sleep on the floor with a mattress, she couldn't do anything else for him. If she hadn't played a prank on her aunt, this would have not happened. She tried her best to convince her grandfather every day but he would not change his decision. All those who had written the medical entrance exam were now looking up for enrolling in colleges. Counselling sessions were held for those who wanted governments seats. Those whose rank wasn't much but qualified for the exam could pay money and get into any university or college of their choice. Since Ria was already under the non-residential Indians quota, she would have to cough up more money even if she qualified and got a rank.To Ria's shock, she did not have the rank she thought she would. She wondered if she was going to disappoint her
Ria and her father spend the next two days checking out various medical colleges in Mumbai but in the end, her father decided to send Ria to the same medical college, from where studied MBBS. Ria's father already spoke with a person from the administrative office and got her a paid medical seat.Lakshmi Narayan Medical College was located away from central Mumbai, very close to the outskirts. Her father had already informed her that it would take two hours for them to reach college. Ria and her father had already booked a cab to travel to the college. Though Mumbai was a thickly populated city, the outskirts were filled with several trees and shrubs. As the car drove she also saw a white temple with a beautiful garden in front. Ria asked the driver to stop so that she could take pictures from her new iPhone. Although her father l
Do people face unfortunate events regularly in life? Of course, everyone does occasionally. In Ria's case, that unfortunate event came in form of a fracture of her cousin on whom she pranked. She wore makeup and a costume to look like a ghost. Her cousin slipped on the stairs while running and ended up with a fracture. Luckily it wasn't his head that got affected but since he fell more than three flights of stairs, he ended up with a fracture in his right elbow. This unfortunate event changed Ria's life suddenly. Her parents were so upset by this that they decided to send her to India for her bachelor's in medicine and surgery. A couple of other events troubled Ria's stay in India but none were unfortunate because she managed to shine in those events among her peers. She thought she could manage her walk wearing a sari on the stage in front of her batchmate
Ria and her friends quickly rushed out of their hostel. The auditorium was in the building next to the second year building. The ground floor had two huge rooms opposite each other. This was where the third and final year MBBS students had their classes. The auditorium was upstairs. It was very huge with several ceiling fans. The auditorium also had a very huge platform. Several girls who wore sarees stood in a corner near the stairs of the platform in a queue. Ria rushed forward and stood last in the line. Her palms and soles began to sweat due to nervousness but she was relieved at the fact that the contest hadn't started. Clenching her lips, she turned her neck and looked for her friends. They were in the second row on the left side of the hall. A cooler was right next to them. Nancy and Nazia both gave her a thumbs-up as they sat down on a white plastic chair.
What is a beauty pageant? Is it just a public entertainment where judges select a girl whom they find to be the most beautiful? Or is it a contest beyond physical appeal? Pageants were platforms for showcasing women's empowerment, diversity, intelligence and leadership.Women who take part in pageants have utilized the platform to empower other women, others have also used pageants as a way to advance their careers. Although this was the meaning of a beauty pageant, it also somehow became a medium for fame for several young ladies but Miss Fresher was nothing at all compared to this.Ria realized that neither it gave any fame nor it would help her in her career. It looked like a contest meant only for popularity. Perhaps this was the reason why many of her batchmates weren't interested in participating. It would only boost her image among the students b
Ria thought all the students would be excited for fresher's day but she was wrong. Her classmates did not show much excitement. Apart from the girls who stayed at the hostel and the students who participated no one was excited. This shocked Ria. Back in America, at her school, the situation was quite different. Any competition would be something everyone would talk about and watch. Whether it was sports, singing, dancing, debate or quiz, many participated as per their interest and many would be excited about it. The hype for fresher's day here was not even remotely similar to that. The girls from the hostel who were rude to Ria now became quiet. Their acne was still visible. Few of them were so embarrassed about it that they sat at the back almost away from many. They only stood up for their attendance covering their faces with a cloth. Ria did feel sorry for them until she rememb
Finally tomorrow, the first-year students would have their fresher's day which was being organized by the second year students of their medical college. Many girls were already excited to see how the event would go but unfortunately, the girls who stayed at the hostel had a different story. Most of the girls from the hostel participated in the event and just a day before the event many of them had severe acne on their faces. They suspected that someone mixed something in the water of the washrooms. The hostel's warden asked the affected girls to freshen themselves and visit the dermatology department of the hospital. She also assured everyone that everything will be fine by evening but until then all students in the hostel will have to use water from the washrooms of the college. This almost made Ria throw up. The unfortunate moments she had with a rat appeared in her mind. Nazia too wasn't happy with this news because she disliked the
There was never a time in Ria's life when she thought someday she would wear a sari. She happily paraded showing off her Indo western clothes at weddings and festivals. Her mother made sure that she wore something that didn't offend anyone yet somehow her typical Indian aunties always found a way to complain something about her. Often they complained about her attitude and called it ego issues because she didn't talk much to them. At times they openly made fun of the way she stood and the way she sat.Ria remembered how her relatives made fun of her in one of the Indian weddings. She wore a very beautiful long skirt which had embroidery on a matching blouse. It was called ghagra choli. Though Ria wore a similar dress for various weddings, this time the blouse was heavy. Her relatives who saw her at the wedding did not appreciate her dress. Instead, they made fun of the way s
Finally, Sunday came, which meant that Ria could spend some hours away from her books to practice how to wear and walk in Sari. Dinesh would bring the sari for her and she would have to try it. He would show her how to wear the Nauvari style of sari. Nazia also agreed to come along to help her. Ria felt nervous because if she messed up something today, she would look like an idiot in front of Dinesh. This was a very important day for her because she wanted to show Manisha that she is up for any challenge and there was nothing Ria couldn't do.However, by Sunday, many first-year girls suddenly became hostile to them. Many of them were very rude and few even dared to ask her if she could walk in a sari."Don't worry about that. This would probably last until the competition. Many girls from hostel are participating for fresher's day and they think you already have an edge." said Nazia as she and Ria sat on in the corner of their hostel canteen."I don't get you,"
Nazia's continuous rude behaviour with Dinesh made him so upset that he began to make more demands. Ria is now supposed to do the physiology homework's that Professor Shruti assigned them. Ria tried to hide everything from her roommate Nazia's vulture eyes but she was exposed. Nazia, who was the female class representative, was given the task to collect homework. She immediately recognized Ria's handwriting, though Dinesh submitted the papers along with his friend. Her vulture eyes looked at Dinesh furiously and before she could say anything further, he pelted across the benches quickly."Ria, he is crossing his limit. Just stop asking him for help.""Nazia, we are only helping each other now. Once the fresher's day is over, I won't need to do anything.""Please just think once again."
Dinesh agreed to show Ria how to wear the Nauvari sari. It had a typical Maharashtrian saree draping which Ria's mother often wore in Indian weddings. Ria decided to contest for fresher's day. This wanted to show Manisha that she isn't afraid of anything and no one can challenge her. This was going to be a tough task for Ria because she had never done it before. The sari that she borrowed from Nazia was torn while she tried to walk in it but this time she was determined to do her best. Luckily, their fresher's day was postponed to the next week and this gave Ria some more time to practice. Since Dinesh did not stay in the hostel, he could bring a sari for her. Ria was very careful while selecting the sari because she didn't want to look like a clown. Of all the photos Dinesh showed her which he saw online, Ria selected a red silk sari with a green blouse. Dinesh agreed to meet her
