CHAPTER TWO: THE ROYAL TRIPLETS
NOLAN’S POV~
We the werewolves of the silent howl pack, far from Greenville town, were to throw a royal soiree for just royalties from the north.
Our father; King Edwards, my mother, I, my brothers, and relatives were all seated at the royal dining table, about to eat dinner when my father decided to make an announcement. There was a lot of distinct chattering because the room was filled with werewolves of high prestige.
To attain silence and everyone’s attention, I raised my glass of wine to the air and stroked it gently with my stainless spoon. And when silence was attained, and everyone’s attention gained, my father cleared his throat and then said,
“Good evening, everyone. As we all know, we are all gathered here today solely for one purpose, tomorrow’s grand soiree.” He took a pause, and then he continued,
“And for the first time, we would be inviting non-northerners. Packs from the south, werewolves from the town of Greenville.”
My uncle; Edgar, was in opposition, “I beg your pardon brother but non-northerners?”
“Yes, brother, non-northerners.” My father affirmed.
“And why’s that?” My uncle Cayce asked my father, who then took a deep breath and said to his brothers,
“Edgar, Cayce, we have been in hiding for so long just to avoid war. We’ve been doing that for over a decade, and I believe that we’re above that now. We’ve achieved a lot, built a lot, and learned a lot. We got here because of how bravely we fought for our freedom. In us, they saw monsters, deadly creatures, murderers incapable of compassion, but they’re wrong.” He then paused to look at everyone seated at the table. Then he pointed at every one of us saying,
“We are all a part of the history of the silent howls. We’ve been silent enough and I think it’s time to come out of hiding and make some noise, have some impact, see the world beyond the north. Travel east, south, west…we cannot be confined anymore!” My father said at the top of his voice.
After a while of silence, my uncle Edgar asked my father, “And who filled all these up in your head, huh?”
“Uncle Edgar with all due respect my father is the king, so every decision he makes is right,” I said sternly.
Edgar scoffed and then by brother Norman added, “My brother’s right uncle Edgar, if our father says it’s time to come out of hiding, then it’s time.” Norman wasn’t one to hesitate, if you pose a threat or dare to disagree with our father, I trust he won’t hesitate to take impulsive actions.
“Be calm brother,” I said to him.
“Well he’s wrong and I say this respectfully,” annoyed Edgar expressed his anger towards Norman. Then immediately he turned to my father, “Brother, have you forgotten so soon what happened when you endeavoured blinning us from hiding?”
Immediately, my father and the rest us at the table kept mute. “Oh, so no one wants to speak. Well I’ll do the honours of reminding you all, it ended in the death of our mother Edward!” Edgar enunciated while saying at the top of his voice. Then he pointed at us; I and my brothers and yelled, “Their grandmother!”
“Edgar, silence!” My father clamored. He stood up from his seat and said to him, “I know very well what happened to our mother, brother. I wept that day and vowed revenge on whosoever did it to her. And now, we use their head as a décor on the wall.”
Edgar was silent, he was too stunned to speak after hearing how my father handled everything he said.
“Next time Edgar, make sure you ask enough questions before trying to oppose me. You know what? Never you try to oppose me again!” My father said to Edgar with spite then he left the dining room.
My brother Niko then called out for our father, “Father, you didn’t lay a single finger on your supper.”
“Feed it to the wolves, Edgar’s made me lose my appetite.” Then he left the room and my mother followed suite, so as my uncle, Gerald. What they would be talking about, I had no clue, but I hoped it was good.
At the table, everywhere was tensed and I wasn’t at ease. “I’ll be right back,” I said as I left the dinning room.
“Where are you going brother?” Niko asked me. I spluttered for a second and then I said, “None of your business, brother. And I say that respectfully.” Then I left. I was barely out of the dinning room when my parent’s came back but without uncle Gerald.
“Where’s Uncle Gerald?” I asked them.
My mother then cleared her throat and said, “Gerald volunteered to send your father’s regards to the werewolves in the south.”
“Greenville town?” Niko asked our mom.
“Yes, Greenville town,” My mother responded.
“And if anyone has a problem with that, you are without doubt uninvited to my grand soiree.” My father didn’t have room for negativity.
They were indistinctive murmurs from my uncles, Edgar and Cayce. I couldn’t quite hear them but my father could,
“You’re a man, say it out loud,” My father said to Edgar. And without hesitation, Edgar said, “You’d be the death of us all.” My father was so enraged that he almost took out the heart of his brother Edgar until my mother screamed,
“Edwards!”
“You’re lucky,” Edwards said to Edgar who was breathing hard incessantly. Then he removed his hands from Edgar’s chest aggressively leaving Edgar shrieking.
……
GERALD’S POV~
I went south with two other werewolves, just in case, because I’ve heard stories about Greenville. It was the town that gave birth to the dispatchers; an army of human hunters shaped solely for one purpose, to terminate the existence of werewolves.
It was dark at a dangerous hour but I needed to do my brother a solid. I had volunteered earlier to send invitation letters to some of the werewolves at Greenville.
Before us was a signboard that read, ‘Welcome to Greenville.’
“Sir Gerald, we’ve approached,” Hector said to me. He was my trusted hand.
“Yes Hector,” I replied. Before we could cross the border, a sharp arrow struck my thighs and I plunged to my knees immediately, shrieking. Before I fell conscious, I watched Jane and Hector fall on their faces, making a thumping sound on the autumn leaves.
Who were these people, and what did they want with us? I thought to myself.
BENNET’S POV~
“We got’em,” I said to my wife. After a few minutes of inspecting them, I found out that they were werewolves.
“My instincts are always right aren’t they?” Carlotta asked me as she sucked her teeth.
“Yeah right, good thing you asked me to come out with our hunting equipment. If not we wouldn’t even last a second.”
“So, what are we gonna do with them?” Carlotta asked.
“We’re gonna kill’em.”
HECTOR’S POV~
Kills us? I was barely conscious when I heard that. I looked around to see Sir Gerald laying unconscious by my left and Jane laying the same on my right.
I heard these people talk and all I wanted to do was burst through the ropes I was tied up with and break their bones, but I couldn’t. It was like the ropes were bewitched, they were stronger than anything I’ve ever felt before.
“Hector,” What? Was that Sir Gerald reaching out to me? He was now conscious and he could barely speak.
“Hector, these people are hunters-“ Sir Gerald was struggling to speak.
“They are very dangerous people and they carry dangerous weapons. I’m slowly dying and I need you to run and don’t look back,” Sir Gerald was breaking in his speech.
“Run? Sir Gerald, I can’t leave you.” I stressed. Then I turned to Jane then immediately Sir Gerald said to me, “Jane’s dead,”
My reaction was numb, “She must have taken it to heart,” Sir Gerald said to me. Soon, he started coughing, it was the dry kind.
“Shit, they’re awake,” The female hunter said.
These hunters were ready to kill us when Sir Gerald yelled huskily, “Wait!!” He had a plan and I had to follow it.
“Don’t listen to anything these creatures have to say,” The male hunter said and immediately, he took a gun from his wife and shot at Sir Gerald multiple times. Somehow, with Sir Gerald’s speed, he got to one of the hunters and tossed me a knife.
“Free yourself and run!” He yelled at me. And without hesitation, I did exactly what he said. I ran and never looked back.
I went up north, unable to act or respond. What had just happened? I didn’t act with honor, instead, I ran with fear.
NIKO’S POV~
I was the first to meet Hector. He looked devasted and sullen. So immediately, I ran up to meet him and ask him,
“Hector, what happened? Why the long face?”
He couldn’t speak, the more questions I asked him, the more tears rolled down his face. His lower lip trembled, enabling him to speak. That was when I felt the need to involve my father,
“He wouldn’t talk, I seriously don’t know what happened to him,” I said to my father.
“Hector, didn’t you leave with Gerald? And Jane, where are they?” My father asked Hector.
Soon, my brothers joined us, and even my uncles as well. I bit my fingers anxiously, hoping for good news.
“Speak up Hector!” My father ordered.
“Sir Gerald’s… Sir Gerald’s…” Hector couldn’t bring himself to say it but we all could read the room; my uncle was dead.
NORMAN’S POV~My uncle was dead, the thought of it was unacceptable. I couldn’t believe it, we all couldn’t believe it. I wasn’t one to be empathetic but for some reason, I could feel the pain my dad felt. He would forever live with that scar, that guilt. After all, he was the one who let him go on that trip. He would never forgive himself.I’m pretty sure Uncle Edgar and Cayce were loving it, seeing my father wrong. They warned him, they saw this coming and they warned him yet, he failed to listen. And I wonder where I got my inner stubbornness from when the source is very obvious.Besides my uncle and Jane, the only thing Hector returned with was a knife. I heard it was mystical and that it belonged to the hunters. This whole mess was ridiculous and thinking about it even made me more mad. “This is so messed up; how did this happen?” My brother Niko asked me, as if I have a special vision or something.“I don’t know Niko, last time I checked I was sitting on that dining table with
NESSA’S POV~ “..Nessa!” My mum called out for me. “You almost forgot your amulet again,” Carlotta said while rolling her eyes. “I’m so sorry mom, I was going to have my bath, and then I took it off-“ Carlotta cut me short and then said, “Nessa, just stop.” I could tell that my mom was already getting tired of my excuses, “It’s almost becoming a habit of yours, you need to stop forgetting your amulet.” She stressed. My mom and I were by the door when my dad; Mr. Bennett Colbert, passed by holding a cup of coffee, “She almost forgot her amulet again right?” He asked as if he knew. “Mm mhm…” Carlotta nodded while I cringed and then quickly apologized. Then my dad said, “Sweetie, I’m not mad, trust me. The only time I and your mom are gonna get really mad is when you step out of that door without it.” “Okay, okay, I get it. It’s a precious heirloom and I’m so sorry for ‘almost’ forgetting it. Now can I go?” I didn’t get why they were both so worked up on some cheesy amulet. “W
