Ava felt the cold iron bars against her reverse as she sat on the damp gravestone bottom of the captivity cell. Lucifer’s pets had shoved her inside with little form, and the door had jangled shut with an portentous futurity. She took a deep breath, trying to calm her racing heart, but the air was thick with the scent of mildew and despair. The darkness of the cell was rough, broken only by a faint splinter of light percolating through a high, barred window.

She closed her eyes, forcing herself to suppose beyond the immediate fear. She had been caught trying to escape Lucifer's palace, a hopeless shot for freedom that had ended in failure. Her mind replayed the events of the last many hours, trying to identify where she had gone wrong, but it was no use. She was then now, and she demanded to concentrate on what came next.

Ava’s studies drifted to her mama , Queen Endora. The queen’s warnings had been cryptic, concentrated with meanings that Ava had plodded to decrypt.
