Chapter Thirty-One

Chichen Itza was everything Jane had dreamed it would be. Flea market stalls lined the pathways and everywhere she looked wooden carved masks and other Mayan relics were for sale. It felt like hundreds of people were milling about as they walked through the crowds towards the temple.

El Castillo as it was named was built more than a thousand years ago and the masonry consisted of limestone. Jane could hear a tour guide tell people that it was a new wonder of the world and she looked up at the magnificent temple.

It consisted of a series of square terraces with stairways up each of the four sides that led to the temple on top. Sculptures of serpents ran down the sides on the northern side and Missy whispered at how beautiful it was.

All four sides of the temple had about ninety-one steps and if counted with the final step onto the temple platform it made up a total of three hundred and sixty five steps. The steps on the southern side were eroded but the tour guide definitely had their
