The blisters on her feet appeared to have exacerbated the pain she felt in the long hike in the course of her travel. But Kaleen refused to back down nor voice out any complaints. She had long passed the main city of Vel with people clamoring in agony at the sight of the princess chained and dragged by the king of vampires.
She remembered the citizens' expressions they wore on their faces as they saw the most decorated warrior in Vel appear in such a pitiful state. The shouts at the palace gates still lingered in her mind as soon as she was dragged away from there.
Marcus intended to really make her appear like that to her people. Lie the only candle of hope for them that was unlit by another tyrant before them.
They cried.
Those poor people cried because they had thought Vel would soon end their deaths.
The only recluse that Kaleen soothed herself into was the fact that all of Marcus' armies dispersed in different directions of Vel.
Despite her situation now, things would get better for her people. She continued to run behind Marcus' horse like a hound on the chain. Then suddenly, the throng of horses stopped all at once and she tripped face down once again.
Kaleen didn't let herself dwell much in the ground, knowing that it might be Marcus' entertainment to remember. Even in the main city when she wasn't paying attention to her way and assured the people when she passed by their crying countenance, the vampire king decided into letting his horse into a wild gallop so that she fell to the ground.
Kaleen earned scratches around her face and exposed skin on her shoulders due to that. In a blend of anger and pain, she glared at the one sitting high up his horse. She wanted to draw her sword which she secured around her waist even by the fact that she wasn't wearing armor to match it.
Didn't even mind how her face stung and her dress colored by the dirt of the ground, Kaleen stood up, dusting her body grudgingly. She had an annoyed expression on her face as she looked around only to see the vampires and even the horses they were riding synchronized in a motionless manner.
They all eyed Marcus' direction, seemingly waiting for something.
Kaleen returned her eyes to Marcus hit by a golden streak sunset on the horizon on their right side. His slightly tanned skin complimented the color of the orb of his eyes which appeared rather grayer than usual.
Finally, the man who'd been merciless on his capture looked down to his right and met the eyes of the princess. There was a slight frown across her face. A blend of what seemed to be fascination and curiosity.
Even without the need to voice out her thought, it was apparent on her face.
Marcus reached over the metal ring attached to his horse's leather girth and detached the chain connected directly to the princess.
Kaleen gasped when he tugged her with the chain he held in his hand.
"Perhaps it's not in your principle and it would be too late to ask since I colored the road with drops of my blood, but it won't hurt if you'd be gentle." Kaleen snapped.
Marcus only regarded her with a blank expression that she doubted if he even heard her. He cast her brief attention before running a hand to the length of the chain.
Kaleen watched the metal chains start to clank before they fell down to the ground one by one until there was no more constriction on her wrists. Grateful for the easement she felt after hours of being bound with it, she massaged her reddening wrist and twirled it round and round to make the blood flow to her fingers.
Marcus jumped off the horse and stood right in front of her. His dark raven hair fell across his forehead as he looked down at the puny presence of a princess of Vel. She was right to claim that her blood colored the road even by mere droplets after countless fall downs on their paths. However, as expected from a warrior princess, she didn't even back down from the display of mockery he made her go through.
The composure she possessed was almost admirable that it could move anyone but him.
"Being gentle is not part of the deal." He said, grabbing the girded sword on her waist and observing it for a brief second.
With eyes both slightly in a squint, Kaleen knew that this man was up to something again. They won't just halt on their path with nothing. She noted in her mind how they entered into the forbidden road of Vel. It was closed since the last reign of king Xavier, her grandfather, whose death still baffled everyone in the royal family.
"Do you know I met this sword before, princess?"
Kaleen stared at the steady gaze he gave her. She had no idea if he was trying to recollect the many times she had hunted for him without any rate of success at all. The vampire hunting only stopped when not one of the vampires had shown themselves in Vel. No one knows why but it wasn't enough consolation for the people.
Because as the vampires departed from terrorizing people in Vel, the werewolves filled in the voids that the fangs had left. It created another wave of fear more terrible than they once felt for the fangs. For the werewolves were vicious and unstoppable compared to the fangs.
"At least not once. I recalled I almost beheaded you." Kaleen replied which drew Marcus' eyes back to her again.
"Don't get ahead of yourself, princess. You might just be dreaming that." He said. "And I'm not talking a sword wielder who is weak to hold this weapon."
Such an insult coming from him stirred rage inside her but she chose to school her expression or he might easily read her.
"Xavier, that old fool of a king." he continued.
"Don't insult the great grand king." Kaleen breathed out.
Marcus didn't flinch much at the anger on her face. Instead, the glimmer on his eyes created by the sunlight started to diminish until only a twilight embraced the whole place.
"Did you know that he was the one who made this path forbidden to pass? With the blood sacrifice of his own and one of ours?"
Kaleen's anger dissipated from her face, replaced by confusion and curiosity instead. No. She didn't know of that matter that Marcus sprouted.
"And did you know that once it's twilight, the creation of such sacrifice resulted in a vile hunter?"
After saying much, Kaleen heard a nasty growling everywhere. Until one dark entity which stood on all fours appeared from the bush. Her eyes widened in horror. For she hadn't met such an atrocious beast all her life before. In fear, she can't even move her body although her mind alerted her to run away from there…
King Herod turned to his side upon Sebastian's arrival at the court meeting. The sun already set on the horizon but the council hadn't reached any conclusive remark regarding the princess who willingly go with the king of vampires. It didn't fail to make the king flinch in anger when Marcus intended to drag his daughter in such a fashion familiar not just to him but to everyone in the council who fought alongside king Xavier. "What of their journey." The king tried to be passive in his question. "Your majesty, I'm afraid I wasn't able to follow their path anymore as they entered the Cheruba." Sebastian broke the news which made the council turn in his direction. "Cheruba?" Henry reacted despite his old stature. "That forbidden passage for us all." Sebastian could only understand how the king was speechless upon hearing such a piece of news. "I tried breaking in but the barrier stopped me from entering." "Then how are the princess and the vampires got through it?" Elisar reinforced
Chapter 7Kaleen’s eyes never left the beast that slowly stalked in their direction. “It always hungered on the blood of the one that summoned it here. Your grandfather.” Marcus said in much fascination glittered in his eyes.“You…you brought me here for this purpose.” Kaleen spat with a low growl in her throat. She didn’t hesitate to snatch her sword back from him.Marcus let it go at once with a devilish smirk on his face. His gray eyes were now replaced with deep scarlet as if a flood of blood pooled on those.“If your goal is to free it through me, you are utterly mistaken. It was too much coldness that made Kaleen thoroughly awaken from the deep sleep. When she stirred, she felt her body sinking into the water. Kaleen gulped her own nervousness as her feet led her inside the wide hall of the king of the land. No human had entered this castle but her. She had no idea if she can get what she wants or if she'll be the dinner for the night. When she entered the large hall, it was as if there was no single soul in there when in fact, there were hundreds of cold-blooded vampires' eyes directed at her. She won't even want to guess anymore if these people in fancy robes and dresses ever had souls in them. Now walking towards the king's throne, she stopped the shaking of her fingers, clamping them tightly to each other. "Who do we have here?" A voice from the throne made her looked up and she met those eyes of the king of the vampire who was said to rule for hundreds of years already. The one whom her family had been hunting into extinction without any success at all. Looking at his handsome face and the smirk that painted his lips, she realized he didn't age at all. For he looked the same as the
Dawn when Kaleen entered the back gate of the palace Vel. As knights approached her as soon as she landed on the wet ground, she took off her head armor and gave it to Sebastian, the chief of the knights.“Your father searched for you for the whole day. We ran out of excuses to tell him.” Sebastian reported walking alongside Kaleen with her horse.“I had enough talking and discussing with them,” Kalee grumbled and took off the saddle of her horse.“I thought you won’t be coming back. Heading to the den of fanged beasts is still quite outrageous. I can’t blame the king if he was worried about you.” Sebastian said.“I didn’t even expect to come out alive from there. They were neck to neck with me when I showed myself up at their gates. Feels like having jaguars breathing under my throat.” Kaleen recalled.“Did it go well? I mean, I don’t expect anything at all. However, seeing you alive and well, I might as well hear you.”“Well, sooner or later, the Vel would be welcoming the fangs at
Kaleen stared outside the window, now dressed and dolled up by her personal maids. "My lady, I already placed your precious dresses in your traveling bag." Clarin had spoken from behind. "Will there be carriage to take you to your destination? I booked for one but the king's men denied it."Kaleen knew it was the doing of her father as his last resort to stop her from doing such madness."There is no need for that, Clarin. I'm sure there shall be many horses to take me there.""But you got so many things to carry. I don't think that would be wiser." Clarin said thoughtfully."Clarin, you are so unnecessarily thinking too much. I wouldn't be a princess in that kingdom of the fangs. So , toss the idea of letting me bring dresses. There won't be any occasion that I'd be wearing one." "You are and will always be a princess." Clarin said.Kaleen smiled at that. In the adjoining land of Vel, a round of nobles were having tea time with the royals of Vel and in some other countries. Under the shadowed table of a cypress tree, came a peaceful conversation between the people around the party. As if there wasn't chaos in the distant lands.Dahlia, Marie, Penelope, and Cristine sipped on their cup as they eyed the one speaking at the round table they were in. They maintained a decorum of interest in the topic as they were taught despite the fact that the talk was certainly repetitively inclined toward the talk of the mundane matter. Sweets and delicious snacks flowed unceasingly as the Montessori kept it that way to please all the visitors in the estate."This might be the day to rejoice for the royal family of Vel." One nobleman turned in the direction of Vel's queen and her daughters."What might be the reason to rejoice today, lord Migson?" the queen addressed the earl from the west, putting down her cup of tea on the table. Like in synchronic
When Kaleen saw the large numbers of vampires just outside the gate by the stairs, she stood in one of the steps in momentary shock. There would be no way that the Vel would be able to overthrow such a population even in full force. Marcus might have changed his course of action indeed.Even where she stood, she could tell how strong the armies of vampires were. By mere quick deduction, the population were as twice the number of the knights and warriors of Vel. Their blue flags waved at the wind and it was enough intimidation for the people to flee in hurry. All of the sudden, Kaleen felt angry as she snapped out of her own momentary faze and ran down the stairs so fast that one would thought that she had wings."Princess, it is dangerous to be running in a dress!" Clarin called out from behind while Joleen exclaimed something that Kaleen no longer heard. All she knew was to confront Marcus at the gate and if she was ever lucky enough, she would persuade that cunning vampire to
