**Dawn’s POV

“Who’s that hot guy? I think I know him…”

My lungs were still burning from the sprint across the airport towards my slowly closing gate. The only thing I could really focus on was the strain on my lungs. My vision was blurred with my breathlessness. So even if I did turn around to see whatever man candy the attendant in front of me was talking about, I wouldn’t have been able to see him clearly.

But in any case, I managed to hand the attendant my ticket, trying to catch my breath while breathing through my nose. Her attention was apparently taken up by said hot guy who must have been close behind me, but I needed to get on the plane so I could sit down and catch my breath..

I waved the ticket in front of her face and the hypnotic spell this hot guy cast on her was broken.

“Just in time.” The woman smiled down at me, although I could see there was a fleck of irritation in her eyes at having to take her gaze away from him to see to my late arrival at the gate.

The best I could offer her was an apologetic and breathless smile, too scared that any attempt to open my mouth and speak a verbal apology would result in me puking all over the floor in front of her.

That wasn’t what you wanted just before getting on a flight for several hours headed to Europe. She quickly returned her attention to said hot guy and I boarded the plane.

I was still panting by the time I sat down, my heart still thrumming like a drum inside of my chest as I rummaged through my carryon bag for a bottle of water. I took in several deep calming breaths and sipped the water. I felt the eyes of the passenger beside me before she placed her hand on my hand lightly to gain my attention.

I turned to see that she was giving me a curious look.

“Are you alright?” she asked.

The woman, a girl around my age, maybe 19 or 20, had a sweet smile, with dark hair and blue eyes that turned into crescents as she smiled at me with an amused expression.

“You’re not going to die right next to me, are you?”

Quickly swallowing the water in my mouth, I let out a breathy laugh, before I shook my head at her. “No, no I’m sorry, I’m just a little bit out of breath,” I explained as she nodded, seemingly content with my explanation. “I tend to save dying for the second time I meet a stranger.”

She gave me a chortled laugh in response, her brows rising to her hairline as she covered her face, slightly embarrassed at the sound that had come out of her. Then she relaxed back into her chair.

She seemed relaxed one moment, and then a gasp left her when the lights of the plane flashed on and I caught sight of her hands as they placed a death grip on the armrests beside her.

“Are you alright?” I asked, turning the question back on her.

“Oh… I’ll be fine. I’m just a terrible flyer,” she admitted. “Never been any good on planes, doubt it’ll start now. It’s a long way to Coaliton.”

This time it was my turn to raise my brows, shocked at her confession. “You’re going to the art program at Coaliton University?” I asked, suddenly excited, and placed a hand on my chest to gesture to myself when she nodded.

“So am I! I’m one of my college’s representatives,” I peaked around for a moment at the other seats, trying to see if I spotted anyone familiar. “Though I don’t know where my counterpart is. They must have caught a different flight. My name is Dawn, I work in ceramic art.”

I turned back to her again when I couldn’t find anyone I recognized.

“Candice,” she said, introducing herself. “l’m a painter. I would shake your hand and show a bit more enthusiasm but I’m a little bit–a lot–petrified right now.”

I could feel her trembling a little and nodded my head as I looked at her sympathetically.

“Is there anything I can do to help?” I asked, and she nodded her head.

“Talking,” she said. “Talking helps. Keeps me distracted. Are you excited about the competition?”

I nodded my head excitedly, more than happy to talk about the thing that had been taking over my mind for the past few months.

“H*ll yeah, are you kidding?” I breathed out. “I’ve been waiting for an opportunity like this my whole life! I pinch myself every five minutes just to make sure it’s not a dream. It’s hard being one of a few awkward art geeks on campus.”

Candice nodded as she laughed, her head still bent and her eyes still closed, but she was laughing as though she understood exactly what I meant. “We will be on a campus full of awkward art geeks just like us. Maybe some hot ones too.”

She bounced her eyebrows and I couldn’t help but laugh.

“I doubt I’ll have time for that,” I said doubtfully. Then I smiled enthusiastically. “I plan to be in my studio sculpting all hours of the night. I am so ready to bring my art to a whole new level. Being around the inspiration of others. It’s a whole different world over there.”

“You don’t seem nervous or scared at all,” she said, impressed.

“Oh I am very but also very nervous. It will be competitive and jarring, yes. And soul-sucking when the muses leave you and you lose the creative juices, but god…”

I pushed my head back against my seat as I shook it in wonder.

“This will be a real chance to see if I’m actually as good as I think I am. I hope I win but if not… This whole experience… It’s gonna be perfect,” I concluded.

I had pictured it a thousand times since getting my award letter and initial stipend from the school. I let myself drift off in a daze and then I felt my eyes scrunch together for a moment as I turned to Candice.

I had lost track of the fact that I was talking to her out loud. I gave her an awkward smile, a cringe took a slight hold of me as I looked at her. “Was that weird?”

Candice laughed again, and I felt slightly less horrible about my passionate outburst. “Are you kidding? I’d have you way beat in awkward conversation if I didn’t believe my mortality was at risk.”

I smiled at her. “Come on, starving artist like yourself? Your mortality is at risk every second.”

“Ain’t that the truth…” Candice mumbled as she pushed her head back into the seat, seemingly having calmed down enough to breathe steadily again and release the death grip she had on the seats.

I decided to leave her alone for a moment to regain her energy. But then I heard a slight murmur from a passenger ahead of me.

“OMG, is that who I think it is? He’s even hotter in person.”

I tried not to roll my eyes. It seemed like the hot guy was now boarding our flight. He couldn’t be that hot…

I turned my head to the aisle and I took in a large frame with a broad back. There was a leather bag strapped to it, two straps slung over wide shoulders, and a mop of black hair rested on the lapel of a long coat.

I moved to look away from the new passenger as he turned his face towards me. I caught sight of his familiar face as he surveyed the aisles across from mine for his seat. My heart sank as I began to recognize that face. It belonged to a boy—no, a man…

No, I had it right the first time, a boy named Craig Blackstone.

A far too good looking student at my school with ‘a standoffish attitude and a very, very private life’. That’s what the magazine article beneath his picture had read once, anyway.

The Craig Blackstone I had met on a date one night was warm and accommodating, the perfect gentleman, up until, you know, he completely blew me off in the middle of that date for no apparent reason whatsoever.

Flashes of memory shot through my mind as I looked at him, heavy hands and opened mouthed kisses. The hair on my arms and the back of my neck raised as though I could feel the ghost of his touch on my skin, hot and greedy and impatient.

It was the first and only time I had acted so impulsively on a date, maybe there was something in the air that night, maybe I had been pent up from college stress and hoping to find some relief anywhere I could.

I don’t know what on earth got into me. I couldn’t understand it fully when I invited him back to my room.

What was also a mystery to me, was the way he had pulled away from me—no, yanked himself away, five minutes later as though he had been scalded by something hot and hurting. He didn’t offer any explanation that night when he just put his jacket back on and left my room.

I didn’t see him again after that, not personally at least. During sophomore year, I did see him everywhere for a few months on my social media feed and in an advertisement for a magazine, modeling for some brand that I was sure I couldn’t even pronounce properly.

He was quite attractive, I’ll give him that. But a girl tends to develop a bitter taste for a guy when they leave just before a good time with a horrified look on their face and no further explanation, like, ever. I held my breath as he came closer looking for his seat and found it just behind mine.

We locked eyes for a moment and he flashed me a casual smile. Wow, he really was gorgeous. I gave a weak smile in return as he walked by and took a moment to store his bag in the overhead compartment.

His fresh cologne scent wafted over me and he lightly brushed my arm as he got the bag situated before sitting down. When the shocked haze of having him so close—too close to me wore off a dreaded thought occurred to me.

I tried to push the gnawing feeling in the pit of my stomach down. The thought was pushing through and demanded to be acknowledged. The possibility that Mr. Bippity Boppity Boo, the disappearing act himself, could be the other representative from our college and that I would have to partner with during the competition. But that… wasn’t really possible, was it?

The guy was built like he’d been to war and back five times over, I didn’t know if it was his height or his girth that was more impressive (and intimidating). The only thing artistic about him was, granted, his physical appearance. But you didn’t get into an international Coaliton competition by looking pretty.

You got into it by having paint layered to you like a second skin, the way Candice had, and you got it by having cuts and dry hands from sculpting like I did. Not… whatever it was that Craig was good at doing.

So no, there was no way he was the second representative. He was probably just going to Europe for some hot shot modeling gig…

Right?

Dawn’s POVSneaking out of the plane and away from the baggage collection area without being seen by Craig Blackstone was as easy said as it was done, thank God.I hadn’t really seen him after the first initial glance, having lost him in the crowd as people rushed to get out of the plane and to their possessions as quickly as possible. Candice’s arm stayed linked through mine since we found our separate bags and then the taxi that was waiting for us to take us to the university campus. And once we had gotten there and I saw the place, I didn’t think I could have gone back to college back home and thought highly of it. Unlike the college back home, Coaliton University was a spectacle to behold. Trees lined every pavement you could see, and in the midst of it surrounded by old, ivy covered face-brick stone was a huge courtyard filled with statues from marble to bronze. There was metalwork winding up and down the staircases as intricate as a fingerprint, even the grass seemed to

Dawn’s POVI tried to move on and reassure myself that Craig would indeed handle the bad guys in the alley. But, I couldn't stop thinking about what happened in the alley throughout the rest of orientation. I couldn't stop thinking about Craig. He saved my life. Also, Craig seemed to have… grown up since the last time I saw him, especially after he had managed to subdue three men without so much as breaking a sweat. Plus, his eyes. They were glowing. “Oh, hello,” Candice’s voice broke me out of my thoughts as I moved with the crowd, headed to our dorm assignments. But when I looked up to greet her I realized it wasn’t me at all that she had greeted. Instead, it was someone behind me.When I turned around, Craig was there. When had he gotten there? How had I not heard him? And was he following me? Was he trying to make sure I got back to the crowd safely?“Hey,” Craig said in response, standing still in front of the two of us until Candice spoke again.“Heading to

Where did this sudden nonsense come from that I thought he had made a metal figure of me?Snap out of it Dawn, you’re embarrassing yourself!“It’s rushed,” he said in response to my question, despite me already having figured out that it was him who had created it.“I like it,” I found myself admitting truthfully. “It doesn’t look rushed to me.”“There are unpolished pieces on the woman’s figure, and the wolf’s eyes—”“The wolf’s eyes are bearing down.” I breathed out before he could say anything. “Animate, claiming. It’s extraordinary how… human they look.”I blinked as I came to realize I had been rambling, and my eyes shot up to look at Craig to see that he had alread

Dawn’s POVThe world sings inspiration. That was what my aunt used to always tell me when I was a kid. No young girl ever wants to have to deal with her parents dying before her. The hurt usually came from watching other kids in their full families. When they would have parents come in to school for parent day, when their mother or father-or both, sometimes-would pick them up from school. Even hearing about their holidays when they came back would be like a stab to the heart.I was lucky, though. I was raised by my aunt, who fortunately was an amazing woman. She had taken me in with absolutely zero hesitation and raised me like her own daughter. She had never had children of her own and had never been married, either. So it was always just the two of us against the world.Sometimes, when things became particularly hard during my teenage years and I began to feel the absence of parents more deeply, she would take time off from work and have us go to our cabin at the lake, whe

Dawn’s POV“You want to merge our mediums together?” I asked over the sound of my now empty tray hitting the back of the holder. “How would that even work?”I watched as Craig shrugged. “Plenty of artists have done it before, it isn’t like this will be an entirely new concept. All we have to do is figure out a theme and piece special enough to wow the judges.”I sighed as I followed him out of the dining hall and into the main hall. There were considerably more people now, causing me to brush up against Craig more than once in an attempt to stay close enough to speak and also out of the way of everyone else walking about.“Here,” eventually, Craig’s hand came up to the side of my waist as he pulled me to stand in front of him, where he placed both hands on my shoulders and led me through the throng of people as he looked over my head. I would have felt offended at how he moved me around like a doll if I wasn’t, well, so impressed at how easily he seemed to move me around like a

Dawn’s POV“Agh,” I groaned as I pushed through the heavy door of the ladies’ restroom. I wished I could say a cool breeze hit me as soon as I did, but instead I was engulfed with the stuffy air of an even more stuffy hallway, bodies squished and pushed to one side that formed the line leading to the bathroom that was currently being occupied. There were only three toilets in there, two of them currently being puked into—I gave the first woman in the line a look that said waiting wasn’t the best idea. She seemed to understand, because she groaned as well before leaving the line and going off somewhere else. Hopefully a bush, and not some obscure corner of the bar Candice had managed to drag me to tonight.“Are you having fun!” said woman asked me, both her and my drink in her hands covered with their individual coasters sat upon them. I deadpanned at her as I massaged the side of my head. I didn’t know whether it was because the bar scene in Europe was so different to the one bac

I could only shake my head from the bathroom where I was busy brushing my teeth. “I want to die.”“I think you might already be dead,” I told her in response as I moved back to the bathroom to rinse my mouth. “Explains the look on your face.”She groaned again as I laughed and pulled on my socks. “I didn’t know being dead could hurt this much. Why did you let me drink so much at the club, anyway?”“You had like, one beer at the club,” I recalled. “And half of mine I think, but at the bar…”I laughed again when Candice groaned, pulling the covers over her head and curling up into a ball when knocking was heard from the front door. When I looked back I found Craig bending over to pick up some of the metal pieces he had dropped on the floor, there wasn’t any evidence of him tripping over anything, so he must have dropped it when he wasn’t paying attention. “Are you a

*Dawn*I had stared outside by the pool area where Craig stood over Jason’s body. He held Jason’s heart in his hands like it was it was squishy toy. Bile rose from my stomach and made my way up my throat. I used all my might to keep it down. It was over. The war was finally done. The enemy was defeated and now, I was free to be with the man I loved without having to look over my shoulder. So, why did I feel like this was only just the beginning? My hand absently when to the place Craig had marked me the other night. Coincidentally, it was in the same place my mark that I had shared with Jason was. When my finger touched the still healing wound, my body shuddered. I didn’t know if it was the old mark or the new one but something moved from my skin all throughout my body. I pushed down then ominous feeling and drew my mind back to the present. Craig must have felt my eyes on him because he lifted his gaze to the window and found me. *Craig*There were three things I was sure of in this life: 1.Dawn Fairborne was my mate. 2.I loved Dawn Fairborne more than life itself. 3.I enjoyed having sex with Dawn. For the past 48 hours, we had spent our time entangled with one another. And in between the mind blowing sex we had—in every room in the cabin mind you—we broke away for food and to explore the forest. It had been the best two days of my life. The girl was this drug that I just couldn’t quite get enough of. I was a goner from the first ‘hello’. Now, she sat on my lap as we watched the sunrise beyond the horizon on our second day here. I felt so complete. I knew that this was the place I was meant to be.We had a whole host of problems to deal with outside of this place, but I knew that as long as her hand remained in mine, we would be okay. Dawn drew circles on the inside of my palm. I kissed the top of her head, breathing in her sweet scent. Her hair was still a little damp from the sh

Our lips crashed together again, the heat only increasing. Craig lifted me from the marble countertop and started moving. I was so preoccupied with his lips, I didn’t care where he was taking us. All I cared about was him and the throbbing between my legs. I felt us climbing some stairs and heading down a long space before a door clicked open. Craig laid me down on a soft bed, not once breaking our kiss. I had changed into sweatpants and a large hoodie after the cave, but I wore no underwear. I could feel the slickness against my leg already. Craig broke our kiss allowing me a chance to catch my breath. He used his elbows to hover over me so he wasn’t crushing my body beneath his. Our hot breaths mingled together into one small cloud of passion. “We will take it slow,” he assured me. “But it will hurt.”I shook my head. “I don’t need slow. I just need all of you.”I was out of my mind thinking that I could handle him at first go without being tentative. But I was

*Dawn*We sat in the car, my hand in his over the console. His thumb absently rubbed the back of my hand gently. I felt whole and complete being with him like this. I watched the trees move past us as we went up the winding road on the side of the mountain. He hadn’t told me what we were going to do, but I had an inkling of how our night was going to transpire. I was nervous but I was also excited. I was ready for this. I was ready for us. Wherever we were going was hidden away from society, or at least it seemed that way. The large pine trees acted like walls on either side of the road. The sun peaked just beyond the horizon as it gave way to a new day.So much had transpired within the last 24 hours, it was crazy. I had almost died, Jason was lamost killed, I had come to accept Craig as my mate, and Serena was redoing Craig’s pack against any retaliation. The mark was also gone from skin and now, I was free to be claimed by another. I was hopeful for our future. But ther

Even with his face turning red, the bastard still smiled at me. “Craig, he is baiting you. If you kill him, then we lose the ability to help Dawn.” Serena was right. I threw Jason onto the floor and scowled at him. I had to pull my wolf back to keep him from murdering the man he so desperately wanted to kill. “How do I remove the mark, Jason? I will only ask you one more time.”He coughed trying to rid the pain from his throat. I could see the sausage like bruise marks on his neck. “I can tell you how to remove the mark. But what will I get in return?”“Your life,” I seethed. He looked up at me with those pitiful eyes of his. “You think yourself to be God, but you are nothing in this world, Craig. *Craig*We moved through the cave as quietly as we could. I could hear the faint mutterings of a male voice that I was sure was Jason. Serena was right behind me with her hand on my shoulder. The darkness was slowly fading away as we neared the end of the cave. I could see the yellow light from flame torches mixed in with the bright blue hue of the moon. “Alpha, we are almost ready.” I recognized that voice. I peered round fhe corner of the entry way to the dome structure and saw Dawn’s aunt Cassie. What the hell was she doing here with him? As far as I knew, Dawn and her had come to an agreement when she left after her visit. Had she not told me the whole truth? My eyes moved from Cassie, who stood in a long white cloak, to the woman was was laying on a stone tabel with her arms and feet bound to it. It was Dawn. Her eyes were wide open but she wasn’t moving. For a second, I thought she wasn’t breathing, but when I saw the rising and falling of her chest, I soon

I was trying to keep a level head but the fact that he had her had my entire body in knots. The man was psycho and I knew that he was plotting and planning something. I should have never allowed her to go. I should have just gone with my instincts at locked her away and hid her from him. So, what if she was angry with me? At least she would have been in my care and by my side. “You need to calm down,” Jared tried to reason with me over the phone, but it was no use. Now my gaze was laser focused on my aunt who hid behind Jason like the coward she was. She had crossed the line. I mean she had crossed it far before this, but now, it was too much. She had cried tears of pure agony and regret and yet, here she stood, next to the man who was trying to capture me and make me his prisoner. “I trusted you!
