Tammy's POV

I rejoice internally that my shift has finally ended, and begin packing up my things before I go to change back into my normal day's outfit.

"Tammy," our head nurse, Mrs Roseline calls to me as I walk towards the changing room. Dread spreads through my body on hearing the tone of her voice. I really hope it's not what I'm thinking.

"Yes, Mrs Rose?" I respond, crossing my fingers behind my back, as some form of prayer.

"I know your shift has ended, but I'd need you to stay behind for another shift," she tells me, confirming my suspicions.

Dang. Exactly what I thought and prayed against.

"I don't think I can do that, ma'am. I already had plans for tonight," I say as I move my head slowly from side to side, trying to reason with her. Although, the only plan I have for tonight is sleeping. But it should count, right?

"I'm sorry, Tammy, but your plans would have to be put on hold," she replies, her lips turned downwards and her expression stern.

Fuck. I should have said that my pet dog died or something, maybe she'd have agreed. I don't have a pet, but she doesn't have to know that part.

"Can't any one else stay?" I ask her, hoping she would give a positive answer.

"No, Tammy. I don't trust anyone else but you to do the job," she replies.

I should feel flattered by the confession, but right now it only annoys me because it means I don't get my sleep time. "Thanks, ma'am, but I really don't think I can stay for one more shift," I tell her with a pleading look in my eyes.

"It's not a question, and you don't have a choice either." I open my mouth to protest, but the next words that come out of her mouth makes me stop and rethink my wanting to leave. "If you do this, I'll put in a good word for you to get promoted as my assistant," she offers.

A very tempting offer. I have been working hard to get promoted to assistant head nurse. if just looking after this patient can get me there, maybe it isn't so bad after all. "Fine," I mutter, feeling defeated.

The lady has the impudence to smile. "I knew you'd budge," she says, like it's a huge achievement. "Now, the patient was just admitted tonight and he has been showing strange symptoms. He was diagnosed with a mild case of fever, but his reactions say otherwise. I just need you to keep an eye on him and try noting any significant changes." she pauses and looks intently at me. "Do you understand?"

'I understand that part. What I don't understand is why I have to be the one staying just to look over a patient with just a mild fever that would probably pass soon enough,' I want to say. Instead, I nod.

"Good," she responds. "I don't think I have to explain anything more to you. You know how to do your job well."

"I really wish I didn't," I mumble to myself. luckily, she doesn't hear, or maybe she does and chooses not to answer.

Nurse Roseline hands me a file and pats my arm softly, before proceeding down the hallway.

'Well, there goes my sleep.' I huff.

Working at a hospital can be really draining. I sometimes wish I could resign but this is what I went to school for, and I doubt I would be able to be as good in another job. Plus, being an orphan who lives alone and has bills to pay, there's not much I can do.

Which is why as much as I hate the stress that comes with the job, I love and appreciate the paycheck. Being in a position to help save lives is also an added benefit, I guess.

I locate the room the patient was brought to, room 103, and enter inside. Everything with him seems totally normal, and it looks like he's sound asleep, a huge contradiction to what was described to me. I check his temperature for added precaution. It seems quite alright for someone with a fever.

I look up from the patient and immediately my eyes land on the open window. That's not safe. We've had cases of some weird and disturbed people entering patients' rooms through the window. I wouldn't want that to happen while it's my turn monitoring a patient.

I go to close it and then walk out of the room.

That should be enough inspection for one night.

I begin walking to the hospital's reception when I hear noises coming from the room, mostly sounding like a creaking bed.

Redirecting my steps, I walk back towards the patient's room and let myself in.

The sight that I'm met with leaves me totally confused and wondering if I was just imagining things. It can't be.

The noises sounded like they were coming from in here. But right now, everything looks totally normal. There's no single trace of unusual activity.

The patient looks still. Suspiciously still.

I go closer to the bed to inspect the patient closely. On touching his head, a coldness shoots through my spine, causing me to shiver slightly.

No no no. It can't be.

Placing my hand on his chest, I check for a pulse. I don't feel a beat.

Panic spreads through me, as it is the first time I've had a casualty when I'm on duty.

Taking a deep breath and exhaling, to calm my racing nerves, I pick up my phone and place a call to the reception, informing the person at the desk of the new development.

On looking away from my phone, I'm left questioning my sanity once again.

The window I had closed earlier is now open.

'why do all these weird things have to happen to me?' I swear I had closed them.

I go to close it once again, looking outside for any suspicious movements.

Instead of finding someone I could pin the issue to, I feel a heavy presence on me, like I'm being watched. There's no one outside, or inside either - other than the dead man. Shaking off the feeling, I turn to close the window and walk away, but my movement is stilled and my breath is caught in my throat as my eyes make contact with a pair of piercing gold orbs.

They are as captivating as the hue that envelops the sky in the sunset, burning bright as a flame captured in a glass. I will myself to look away, but am unable to, the beauty of this creature's eyes rooting me in place.

I stand transfixed, my gaze locked with the creature's - or person's - until finally, it moves away, enveloping itself in a shadow of the darkness. Only then, am I able to come out of the enchantment that it seemed to have cast around me.

Tammy's POV "No, sir." "You say you didn't notice anything suspicious about the patient's behavior last night?" "No, sir," I repeat to the officer for the umpteenth time in an hour, starting to regret reporting the opened window of last night. He sighs. "Ma'am, I know you must be tired from last night and you most likely want to get some rest, but I'll need you to be more cooperative if you want that to happen. Your two worded replies won't suffice." He seems stuck on the opinion that I'm hiding something from him. Even if I am, it isn't something that would help him out. Putting on the most innocent act I can muster, I tell him, "I promise I'm not keeping anything from you. I've told you all that there is to know. He squints his eyes at me slightly, a disbelieving look playing on his face. "If you say so, ma'am," he replies and walks away. He glances over his shoulder at me, and I smile at him with a shrug. I should have been sleeping at home by now. But since I was the

Tammy's POV How did he manage to close the distance so quickly? I could have sworn he was at least six feet away when I reached my car, but now he's right beside me. This just adds to the weirdness of everything about this man. I look at his hand on mine, and then at his face. The unfamiliar feeling from earlier comes back to me, causing me to immediately pull my hand away from his and turn my body to face him. Only after turning, do I notice the close proximity of our bodies. Instinctively, I move backwards to create some distance between us. My body makes contact with the cold metal of my car, the space between us still not sufficient enough. Ignoring that, I choose to focus on the fact that he has been observing me without saying anything. It fills me with discomfort and I pull a strand of hair behind my ear and look at him, breaking the silence. "What?" I ask, a brow raised in question. "I want to speak with you," he responds. 'what could he possibly want to spe

Adam's POV I go to stand by my window, looking out to the vast spread of trees around us. The moon hangs low in the sky, casting a dewy haze over the surrounding forest. During normal times, observing the moon this way brings me a sense of calm, but I can't help but be filled with worry and unease for my people, as the time for the full moon is fast approaching. The full moon which should be something to be celebrated by werewolves, is a time that fills members of my pack, the skyline pack, with fear and trepidation. The curse on our pack, tied to the full moon, has already began to rear its ugly head, claiming the lives of five members of my pack already in just a day. My father, the alpha, has gone to witches to see they can reverse the curse, but despite their efforts, it only seems to grow stronger. I fear that if it isn't revoked soon enough, it would lead to all our demise.Taking the sick ones to the hospital isn't an option, as they might manifest signs that are abnormal t

Tammy's POV I walk into the coffee shop, my head pounding and my breath ragged from my run. I should have opted for coffee before going for a run to get me completely awake and energized, but I guess it's too late for regrets now. I order a large cup of black coffee and take it to go sit by a booth close to the large window. Covering most of my face with the hoodie of my tracksuit jacket, I slide down my sit, taking pathetic slurps of my coffee. I chose this booth because it gives me privacy, and I get to people-watch without the people having a clue that they're being watched. I let my mind wander, going to the times when my grandad was still alive. It's almost time for his death anniversary and I'm already starting to miss him so much. If when he was still alive, we used to go on early morning runs together, and afterwards grab coffee at a cafe close to where we lived. I haven't stepped a foot in that place since he died. Besides, I don't even miss the coffee there th

Tammy's POV I close the front door of my house with a sigh, sliding down it and letting out a huff as I bury my face in my palms. As I try to shake off the feeling of unease, I realize I need to take action. I left the cafe feeling even more drained than I did when I got there. The encounter is still fresh in my mind, and I'm torn between helping out the mystery man's people and avoiding him and the mystery surrounding him.An idea strikes me, that has me jumping up from my place on the ground and scrambling around to find my laptop, as I'm determined to uncover more information about the mystery man. After a few minutes of searching, I finally find the laptop in my room, under a pile of clothes on my beanbag chair. "How did it even get here?" I chuckle, picking it up and turning it on as I move to sit on my bed.I open a browser and begin typing to search for the mystery man, but then it hits me that I don't even know his name or any means of finding out who he is. I jog my memo

Tammy's POV I wake up with a start, my heart racing and my sheets drenched in sweat, as though I had just ran a marathon. I lay in bed, limply, trying to catch my breath and calm my racing heart. Beads of perspiration line my forehead and I struggle to overcome the effects of the nightmare I just had that left me feeling like I was experiencing it in reality. As I sit up and swing my legs over the side of my bed, I notice the darkness of the room, with the only light source being the little rays trickling into my room from the street lamps and headlights of cars that are driving by. I must have slept off at some point in my search, and just happened to sleep through my afternoon. I sit in silence, trying to recollect fragments of the dream. I ran through the woods, and a female voice kept crying out to me, urging me to go faster. A particular sign on some of the trees catches my attention - an eye with an inverted triangle in the eyeball. It glowed whenever I passed by

Adam's POV "Father," I greet, stepping into the light of my father's room. My father turns to face me, his arms held together behind his back. "Adam. I had expected you to be here sooner." He had summoned me earlier, but I wasn't able to come immediately. I went for a walk in my human form during the early hours of the morning, before letting my wolf, Thane, out for a run. The walk was intended to help me clear my head of doubts. After seeing Tammy last night, and the way she looked so unbothered about everything - not that I want for her to be bothered - I was filled with the thought that she'd decline my offer. I couldn't resist the urge to see her, so I went to where she lives. Luckily, she came to stand by the window and I was able to catch a glimpse of her before I left. Realizing that I had drifted off in thought, I clear my throat and then respond. "I'm sorry, father. I was on a run when I got your message. I got here as soon as I could," I explain. He nods his head and

Tammy's POV "Where is it?" I mutter, rummaging through the pile of books on the ground, hoping to find the book with the symbol. I woke up at the crack of dawn, with finding the book as the first thing on my mind, and it's been hours since I started searching, but to no avail. If anything, I managed to find that papa had a large collection of books, and he also stored my books from fourth grade. I had shed a few tears upon discovering them, and went back to my missionI groan in frustration, tugging at my hair. I could have sworn I kept it among these ones. How is it that every other book - relevant or irrelevant - is here, save for the one I actually need? Or maybe papa threw it away?Closing my eyes, I think back to the time when we were gathering our things from the old house, to move into this one. I try recalling if papa had burned any books, but nothing of that sort comes to memory. The only thing that comes to mind is him burning my nana's old diary, which he claimed was u

Alexander's POV A muffled groan escapes me as I pull at the chains binding my wrists, the cold metal biting into my skin. It's futile. No one has heard me in twenty years - I doubt today will be any different. Footsteps echo through the cave. Then, a familiar sound. "Tch tch tch." My captor clicks his tongue as he steps into the dim light. "What have I told you about making noise, Alex?" I don't respond. How can I, when I've lost my voice? He chuckles, low and cruel. "Oh, that's right. You can't speak."He moves closer, stretching out his hand. The moment his fingers hover near my skin, the searing pain begins. I should be used to it by now, but the agony never dulls. My mouth opens in a silent scream. "You know, I should have grown bored of this by now," he muses, watching me writhe. "But it still pleases me. Why is that, Alexan?" I glare at him, hatred burning in my eyes. It only amuses him. "How pitiful. The mighty Alpha of skyline pack... reduced to this. And yo

Third person's POV "Arabella!" Freya's voice cut through the stillness of the woods.'Where has she gone now?' her mother thought, pushing into the forest, searching for her daughter. Her eyes darted between the towering trees, searching for her daughter. The girl always wandered off, and Freya always had to go looking for her. A sharp squeal rang out behind her, followed by the sound of laughter. Freya spun around, heart lurching. "Arabella, come back! It’s just a bug; it won’t hurt you!""No, go away! You're gross!" The voice was closer now, high-pitched and teasing.A second later, Arabella came barreling through the trees, her black curls bouncing with each step. She crashed into Freya’s legs, giggling, until she glanced up and saw the stern set of her mother’s jaw. Freya folded her arms. "What have I said about you running off into the woods?"Arabella’s laughter died. She clasped her hands in front of her, eyes cast downward. "Not to go too far."A rustling came from the

Unknown person's POV I have been observing the girl Adam brought here - Tammy - for a while now, and none of them even suspect a thing. She isn't just a normal girl, no matter how much she tries to deny it. That night in the meeting, when she first arrived, I sensed something off about her. Something different. Her scent burned hot in my nose, too intense, too unnatural. At first, I thought it was just my heightened senses playing tricks on me. But when I saw her up close again, I knew it wasn’t. Even the people who woke up from the curse-induced sleep testified that they had seen her doing something to them. I can't believe that even when Adam was there to witness it firsthand, he still didn't try to investigate her properly. And when he eventually did, he convinced himself she was a Wanderer. He proves to be a fool at times. I'm incredibly glad that I've gotten somewhat close to them and I was able to get access to the book on Wanderers. And I'm also relieved that he wa

Tammy's POV I sit up, intrigued by what he has to say. "It happened when I was seven," Adam begins, his voice quieter now. "Around the time the curse started and my mom died. I can't seem to remember the details, but I remember thinking about the ashes on every tree. I decided I liked the color grey that day. I couldn't like the color of the ashes because of the sad memories attached to it... so I picked the color closest to it.""Shouldn't that have been white?" I tease, a soft laugh escaping me. He chuckles. "Grey's probably felt more like me. A dull, heavy nothingness."His words settle between us, and I frown. Something about his story doesn’t sit right with me. "All those things happened at once?" I ask, my brows furrowing. "That's three questions, Tammy," he points out, a ghost of a smile playing on his lips. "And to answer your illegal question - I don't know. My memories from that time are a blur. I only remember what came after.""That seems odd, don't you think?"He ex

Tammy's POV "What do you mean you can't find the key, Ophelia?" Adam's voice booms, vibrating through the thick, wooden door. He's asked her that, for might be the hundredth time, this morning. I'd woken to the sound of Adam's escalating shouts. Ophelia had so conveniently misplaced the key - my room key! And of course, there's no spare one around, because the keys were in a bundle.I fight to hold in a laugh as Adam's face flushes red, his frustration radiating off him. He's definitely tired of being trapped with me for so long. I don't blame him. After hours of forced proximity and a pretense of casual conversations, due to Ophelia's ingenious plan. We tried our best to make things less tense between us, but that has worn thin. And now, it's either Adam leaves, or we see how long we can ignore the obvious tension lingering between us. "Ophelia!" Adam roars, his fist slamming against the door again. "Find that key right now, or I swear you won't like what happens when I get out

Tammy's POV We've watched two more movies - romance and action - and I'm already starting to feel sleepy. Like she read my mind, Ophelia stands up with a yawn. "I think I'm gonna sleep now." She comes over and gives me a brief hug. "Good night, Tammy. It was so nice that you could join us." I wonder if I even had a choice.Eric, who had fallen asleep in the middle of the second movie, stirs awake. "Has the movie ended already?" He asks, and we both laugh. "Yeah," Ophelia answers. "I was just about to head back to my room.""I'll come with you," Eric says, rubbing his eyes as he stands. "Good night Tammy. Adam," he nods at his brother before they both leave the room. This movie night was more relaxing than I expected - well, if I ignore the uncomfortable moments with Adam. At some point during the movie, I’d unintentionally leaned into him, and the brief eye contact we shared felt like it lasted too long. He didn't seem to mind. But I, on the other hand, was freaking out inside.

Tammy's POV The chill of the night air seems to seep into my bones, a contrast to the heat that was pulsing through me moments before. "Forget we've ever been together," my words to Adam echo in my mind, leaving a bitter aftertaste. I watch Adam's retreating back, the broad line of his shoulders disappearing into the darkness, and a hollow ache settles in my chest. His kiss still lingers on my lips. I didn't intend to make him leave like that. Well, I did, but not in that way. I had expected things to go... smoother, to say the least.I almost regret telling him to pretend. Almost.'Liar.'The word claws its way up my throat, but I swallow it down. I know I'm not fooling anyone, especially not myself. The kiss, the way my body had responded on its own accord, even the way I’d melted into him, was a betrayal of my carefully constructed walls, of my determination to leave, and of my fear. I knew that after having a night together, he would begin to think that he had finally gotten

Adam's POV "Forget that we had sex." Her skin becomes darker, and it's noticeable even in the dim light. She clears her throat. "And uhm... also forget what happened after."I don't have to ask her what she means, understanding that she is referring to her loss of consciousness. I don't think it's something she should be ashamed of, though. But I don't tell her this, knowing that she wouldn't care to hear it. After all, she just demanded I forget everything, like it didn't mean anything to her. "Why?" I ask her. If I'm to do as she says - although it is impossible - I would have to get a good reason. It isn't just her experience; it is mine too. And it's like she's taking away my right to feel happy about being with my mate. She turns, her lips pressed into a thin line. "Why do you need an explanation?"I stand, like the seat suddenly became too hot for me. "Don't you think I deserve one? After all, you are my-" I stop myself, the word "mate" catching in my throat. I know that she

Adam's POVThe sound of Eric's booming laughter resonates through the woods. "It's not funny, Eric," I mumble, rubbing the back of my neck. His laughing fit dies down, but a glint of amusement remains in his eyes. "Wait," he chuckles. "Come again. You mean she slept off while having sex with you?" "Yes," I breathe. My response sends him into another wave of laughter, and I instantly regret telling him. "Wow. I knew you sucked, but this is a whole new level."I ignore his jests. I know what happened to Tammy wasn't normal, I just know it. "She came into my room, begging me to have sex with her, and when it happened, she fainted." I pause. "Do you think that's normal?"The grin on Eric's lips vanishes, an unreadable look taking its place. "She came to you? I thought you went to her. I mean, isn't that the werewolf thing to do? Especially with the full moon's heat?"I sigh. "I know, and that's why I'm worried. Why would she do that, and then lose consciousness?""Do you think it's
