The vigil was held in the village hall and the arena was large enough to contain everyone. All of the villagers were on black and thoroughly covered up because of the cold. As if the weather wanted to honor the chief as well, the sun had come out towards evening, even though it had been brief.

However, the cold was not Islinda's problem because she had a lot on her mind and they revolved around Eli and Valerie. She still couldn't accept the fact that the child had taken a liking to her evil stepsister after what she had done to him yesterday.

It seemed odd and didn't make sense. Just what did Remy win him over with? It wasn't with her food because that alone was poison. But then, Islinda had to admit it was nice knowing someone would watch over Eli while she waited for Valerie to arrive.

It would have been difficult seeing the Fae with the boy by her side and Islinda wasn't sure she wanted Eli privy to their interaction. Islinda had no idea what kind of relationship she had with Valerie now, but one thing was for sure, it was not suitable for a child like Eli.

That was why Islinda sat at the back of the hall and was close to one of the entrances. Although she worried about how Valerie would find her through this mass of people, he was confident and she believed his word.

It was dark but the hall was illuminated enough to see where one walked. Everyone came with a candle or lantern of their own. Seated on blankets spread on the floor, Islinda was attentively listening to the personal short stories told about the chief by selected villagers when she felt a shift in the air and someone occupied the space beside her.

She turned and the breath was knocked out of her lungs. The first thing Islinda noticed was his unnatural yet beautiful yellowish-amber eyes. He truly found her.

It was Valerie and he indeed took her advice of dressing in a black cloak with a hood that covered his pointed Fae ears. Her heart went out to the villager he stole that from, it was simply not going to happen again. In order not to draw attention since the vigil was completely silent, Islinda faced forward and concentrated on the speeches.

Islinda was not able to concentrate at all, especially when Valerie reached between them and took her hand in his, intertwining them together. Her throat dried up and she found it actually hard to swallow. It was just holding hands but a thousand butterflies seemed to flutter in her belly and Islinda felt desire for a man for the first time.

Hence it was not surprising that when it was time to honor the chief by playing and dancing to his favorite song, Valerie and Islinda snuck away.

"Where are you going? The dance seemed interesting," Valerie's laughter echoed in the air even as she dragged him away from the village's presence.

"Hush, Valerie," She turned and pressed her finger against his lips only for her cheeks to burn and she removed her hand with a jerk, having realized what she did.

Valerie smirked at her, as if realizing the kind of effect he had on her. Islinda's cheek grew hotter and she fanned her face with her palm. Why was she feeling heat in the cold?

"I'm just saying it could have been fun or don't you love dancing?" He stared at her in amusement.

"Of course, I love dancing!" She said loudly, realizing a little too late she was worked up over nothing. It was simply a dance - which she was horrible at.

Islinda cleared her throat, "I'm just saying it might not be safe for you. What if you get lost in the dance and your hood falls off, then everyone realizes what you are…." Her chest constricted at the thought. It was shocking to Islinda how she cared too much for this Fae. If she wasn't careful, she would dare say he was her soul mate.

He reached out and squeezed her shoulder, "You don't have to worry about me, I'm more powerful than you think."

Valerie knew he should tell her about his royal heritage but he enjoyed the way things were between them and wouldn't want her to treat him otherwise. He was just a simple Fae now enamored by a lovely human.

"If you say so then," Islinda let out a deep breath and they were back staring at each other.  Dear gods, he was beautiful.

Valerie must have noticed the sexual tension between them because he asked, "Is there a place where we can be alone?"

Those words spoke volumes and she swallowed hard. Islinda was not a kid and knew what he was offering even if she had not done it before. But she has read books, heard stories and she was all but a lady. As a lady who hunts amongst men, she has had offers from several males, and while some were romantic, the others crude. Not to mention men made a lot of dirty jokes.

Of course, she had declined them because none of them held her attention and Islinda was a romanticist. She wanted a man who would love her and together they would have a family and a happily ever after. Yeah, a fairytale love. Perhaps, the reason she hasn't been interested in any man so far was because she had been waiting for Valerie to come along.

Suddenly, her eyes hardened with resolve but even as strong as she appeared to be, her voice still shook.

It was a good thing they were not holding hands anymore because she was jittery with nerves and gave space for doubt to come in. Was she doing the right thing? What if Valerie doesn't like what he sees? She was a virgin, would it hurt as much as they say? Also, Valerie was a Fae, would his thing be different from a human male? Where would their relationship head after this? Why does this sound like a mistake?

However, Valerie took her hand in his and smiled at her and her anxieties vanished at once. He filled her with strength and Islinda found herself smiling back at him. Perhaps, she was thinking too much and sex was supposed to be done without constant worrying.

They arrived at the old mill which was through a small meadow where the villagers like to relax, but with everyone gone to the vigil, no one would dare to bother them there. But as soon as she locked the door and turned, Valerie's lips were on hers and Islinda forgot how to breathe.

"Get off that cot, you lazy piece of bones!" Her stepmother's shrill voice broke through her haze of unconsciousness, at the same time a kick met her back and the sleep instantly vanished from her eyes. Islinda would have blinked against the faint sunlight filtering through the window if it wasn't for the angry-looking woman hovering over her. The bloody look on Madam Alice's face hinted that it would be the end of her life if she dared to give a cheeky response. Hence she bit the inside of her cheeks and tamped down the anger surging through her veins, saying instead, But the woman scoffed at her. Perhaps, she has come to realize how ridiculous it was to refer to her with the title of "mother" when she wasn't. Her stepmother, Alice, seemed to let go of that because she announced the next minute, "There is nothing to eat." Islinda winced inwardly, holding back the words she wanted to hurl at her. Of course, there was nothing to eat because she and her daughters exhausted the rem

However, whoever knocked into her might as well have given her a taste of death because her head spun, pain pierced through her body from the impact and she squeezed her eyes shut in a grimace. Deep down, she knew the hunger was responsible for the dizziness but not the suffocating weight on top of her. Wait, did she just say weight….? Her mind finally cleared and Islinda found out that she was being pressed down by a larger and heavier body. At first, she panicked, having thought it was a hunter trying to force himself on her, until she lifted her head and stared into golden glowing eyes that sent fear slithering down her spine in a dark caress. "By the gods, no…." She choked, recognizing the otherworldly creature staring at her with those strange eyes, and the blood drained from her face. No! It was impossible! it wasn't even dusk yet! "Who wants to join me?" The Cruel Prince muttered just as he mounted his black stallion. While that seemed like a normal horse it was obvious from the dark tendrils emanating from the horse's eyes that it had been infused with his dark magic. The horse named Maximus was a strong yet unruly horse and there had been plans of putting it down after its last attack on the poor Fae who had attempted to subdue it until Prince Aldric claimed and was able to tame it. It was obvious from the way both the master and the horse worked together that they were perfect for each other. "No one?" Prince Aldric tilted his head to the side, studying the soldiers that had been sent to assist him to get rid of the latest monsters that had ravaged the Fae village. And while that had seemed like a request, the sinister smirk curving the corner of his mouth suggested that he was merely teasing them because he liked to work alone.Prince Aldric of the Winter Court was the last son to be born to King Oberon o

  • Mated To The Cruel Prince   Chapter 4: Saving The Injured Fae

Islinda believed that she made the best decision that benefitted both sides even though her bones rattled with the cold and her breath was a repetitive fog in front of her. She could not lose the deer that would feed her family for a while, nor could she abandon the Fae that might come after her for not helping him if he mysteriously survived. So yes, she did not exactly have a choice. Hence Islinda fulfilled the task slowly yet persistently by taking the Fae with her and walking a great distance before letting him down at a spot and returning for the deer, covering the same gap. Thus, she repeated the same pattern over and over again till the abandoned hut came into view. Now close to her destination, her blood began to pound loudly in her ears as her heart rate increased. Islinda had no idea what awaited her there, were the rumors true or false? Does she walk to her salvation or her end? A lot of thoughts filled her mind as it hit her that this might be her final moment. Nonethe

If the Fae died or not, was entirely up to his fate because Islinda did not give up on him. As a huntress prone to dangers in the forest, she never departed with her medicine pouch and had kept it inside her quiver alongside her scanty arrows. Hence, she easily reached for the skin bag and when she opened it, picked the herbs that she needed and put it in the bowl. She pulled the drawstrings and closed it, putting the medicine pouch back in the quiver, at least what was left of it. Some of the herbs she had picked during her hunts and the rest she had bought from medicine peddlers for a huge price. Parting with it all just to treat a Fae that might kill her later, Islinda did not know whether to laugh or cry at her pathetic kindness. Having grown up with a stepmother who didn't care about her well-being, the herbs were for her use. But not anymore. When it came to treating a Fae, Islinda's knowledge was stretched, hence she nearly put in everything that she felt could "attempt" to

The palace ground was peaceful with the Faeries going about their business and respective duties with smiles on their faces. However, that harmony was disrupted when a portal suddenly opened up in the middle of the courtyard and everyone stopped what they were doing out of curiosity to see who had arrived this time. Only royalties and high-ranking officials had access to the portals and they were hoping to see a familiar, if not popular Fae, only for the blood to drain from their faces when the cruel prince stepped out instead. Time seemed to have slowed down as they stared, jaws slacking at the dark prince that they hadn't expected at the palace. "Hello?" Prince Aldric waved at the people whose feet were stuck to the ground in shock, "Who missed me?" He grinned wickedly at them, revealing sharp white teeth. They snapped off from their shock and there was instant pandemonium as every one of them began to run in the opposite direction. No one wanted to be near him. Even the guards w

A gold circlet rested on King Oberon's head, his long silver hair clung to his face and hung over his ears while his blue piercing eyes were a reflection of his unbridled rage as he stared down at his son.His question echoed across the throne room and was filled with so much power that the others present with him shuddered from the intensity and lowered their head, afraid to meet the fuming King's attention. Only the strongest would rule the kingdom of Astaria and the prince's dark side was attracted to the power emanating from his father, the king. While King Oberon was the powerful in the land, like every other Fae who has lived for long, he's waning with age and Adric does not doubt that he would win if they were to spar now. Not that it would be an easy victory. Prince Aldric forced his body into a mock bow saying, "I am sorry for my untidy appearance, your majesty, the King. Exhaustion finally invaded her body, her face gray with it. Islinda staggered in her steps as if she was drunk with wine and her knees would have buckled from the pressure however she gritted her teeth and made it to her village through sheer will. She was walking through the muddy, frozen roads of the village and would have hated returning to that cramped cottage, but at the moment, she was so cold that she hungered for a bit of warmth. There weren't many people on the way, not that any would spend time outside in this harsh winter and at night. However, the few people she had come across sent shivers down her spine when she saw their hungry gazes and the way they pinned on her prize - the deer. Their covetous look made Islinda straighten up, her body tensed and she swore to the gods, she would fight them to the death if they attempted to rob her. She had worked hard for this and would not let another reap the benefit of her labor. Perhaps, it was the determined look in her eyes or

Issac was red-faced and looked like he was going to combust anytime soon. Just as "her poem" suggested, he was riding Maximus, her horse form, but not in the way she suggested. It seems that after passing her test, she had dropped all forms of pretense with him and now, he was on a talking horse. Yep, as if it couldn't get weirder. How couldn't he have seen the signs? Everything was pretty much obvious that she was not a normal horse. But then, Maxi was good at pretending. Now, he had to suffer through her horrible rhyme filled with sexual innuendo. "I'm satisfied with my ride,Now I've got to shake, shake, shake Shake my beautiful ass…." "Alright, that's enough!" Issac shouted and didn't need to ask twice, he got off the horse, his actions nimble and swift. He had been a soldier in the king's army after all and didn't find dismounting a horse one bit stressful. However, he was glaring at Maximus now, his ears were going to bleed anytime soon if she continued with that horrible p

Islinda didn't know she got to the chief's place, her mind had been racing the entire time. How could the man die at a critical time like this? If he were going to die, he should have at least found Eli's parents first before leaving. Now, she was left all alone to deal with the burden. The chief's place was filled to the brim with sympathizers who had come to offer their condolences to his family. It wasn't until that moment that the cold began to get to her and Islinda looked down to discover that she was barefooted and her toes were beginning to freeze. The shock had been so great, it had stripped her of all sense of reasoning. "Aiyo, how could you come out like that? Even if the chief's death is shocking, we cannot afford to lose a young soul too!" It took Islinda a minute to realize that the elderly woman was speaking to her. Islinda knew one from the marketplace, having sold one of her small animals to her. "Ahh, this…." She shifted on her toes uncomfortably, now embarrassed

"Good Morning big sister,"A grinning face was all she could see and Islinda nearly stumbled off the cot in the process. He startled her and how did she wake up this late? The sun was already peeking out through the window, her stepfamily was going to kill her."What's wrong big Sister? You look worried?" Adric inquired, noticing how quickly she made her bed."Eli, this is not the time for this. I need…." What does she need? She needed a breather, "I need to go about my morning chores and make sure the family is satisfied else they would take it out on you…." Islinda trailed off when she realized that was not the right thing to tell a child. She cleared her throat, coming to take Eli's hands in hers and bent to his height," When people are hungry, they get angry and do crazy things. But don't worry, no one will touch you." She smiled at him brightly, hoping that was enough to assure him.Now that she thought about it, the boy was more mature than she thought. He didn't throw tantrums

"How do I look?" Maximus twirled around in her new dress stolen from a villager's clothing line. Yes, they were in the village now at Issac's insistence. Her shy Fae threw quite a tantrum, insisting to meet her master now. Hence, she decided to train him like a dog by feeding him crumbs. Haha, she was joking. Maximus merely brought him to the village where the master was, enough to satisfy his desire but not exactly feeding him the information he needed. Issac was relieved now, she was no longer naked and his tunic had been returned to him. However, her scent now lingered on the material and she smelled like lush green grass and the wild. Issac caught him at last, horrified at the thought that he found the scent desirable. He stood straight at once, this was all a distraction. The sooner he was back in the Fae realm, the better for him. "I don't see the prince," He reminded her the reason he had agreed to come to the village with her - after helping her steal clothes of course. Not

Panic rose through Remy when she was unable to move a muscle. It was a lucid dream and she should be able to direct and control the course of her dream. But that wasn't the case. It was almost as if she was pushed into the seat of a carriage ride and someone else manipulated her dream. At first, she was unable to see anything past the encroaching darkness that sent chills down her spine and her instincts warned her to run! To wake from this slumber! But there she lay helpless, squirming in real life, not that there was anyone to help her. And suddenly, there he was, hovering over her, it was the young boy that the bitch Islinda had brought home. Remy should not be afraid of him but it was the feeling of a prey recognizing a bigger predator. There was a menacing energy around him that made her heart begin to pound loudly in her chest. Something was not right about the boy. "Ahh," He rasped, taking a good look at his handwork, "You don't look so scary anymore, do you? How easy it was

"Come, lie with me, Eli," Aldric raised a brow at that comment until he realized that she meant it literally and his excitement faded. Tsk, what a disappointment. He almost thought that she was giving herself to him and he would have taken her up on the offer. It was not every day that a woman offered her body to him. But then, it was understandable since he had glamoured himself to look like a child and the human would be committing a crime if she forced himself on him. That is if he doesn't kill her first for trying such. However, Adric was not ready to end her pathetic mundane life yet until he understood her relationship with his brother. Humans were less than animals in Aldric's sight. A race responsible for their own annihilation was not worthy of his respect. He knew them for their selfish ambitions and wickedness except for this female human in front of him, she was the most foolish of them all. She was smart yet stupidly naive. How could she trust so easily? Or has no one

  • Mated To The Cruel Prince   Chapter 21: Eli Was Staying The Night

"Where have you been?!" Madam Alice round on Islinda as soon as she came into the house. Not that Islinda did not see it coming, which was why she quickly pushed Eli behind her so he would not see the scene. Madam Alice was so furious that she didn't notice the young boy until Remy said, "Who is this boy and where did you pick him from?" The disgust in her tone and the way she looked down at Eli as if he was mere dirt made anger course through Islinda. Eli wore simple clothing of a shirt and trousers, but the addition of her thick and longer coat stunted his height and was off-color, hence making him look a bit haggard. Even at that, one could never mistake the boy for a beggar because Eli looked healthy and fine with his chubby cheeks. The beggars Islinda knew from their village were malnourished and sickly thin; you could see the outline of their ribs. If there was a beggar here, it would be her family because they would have been out begging for food in this cold winter if it wa

"You can see the village chief now," Those words were a huge relief to Islinda who had been impatiently tapping her foot against the ground. She was so full of nerves and wanted to get this over with already. Islinda rose from the bench, pulling Eli to his feet with her and flashing him a gentle smile when she saw the questions on his face. He was a quiet yet observant kid and Islinda was extremely grateful she didn't have to deal with any childish tantrums because she was exhausted. She said to him, "You don't have to be afraid, Eli. This is the house of our village chief and he would help us find your mother, okay?" The boy nodded his head in acceptance and Islinda was so awed by his obedience that she couldn't help but reach out, attempting to ruffle his hair playfully only for his cold gaze to cut through her and she stopped short, her hand hung midway. What was that? Her heart couldn't help but skip a beat and it wasn't out of excitement but fear. Eli was merely a child but
