Exhaustion finally invaded her body, her face gray with it. Islinda staggered in her steps as if she was drunk with wine and her knees would have buckled from the pressure however she gritted her teeth and made it to her village through sheer will. She was walking through the muddy, frozen roads of the village and would have hated returning to that cramped cottage, but at the moment, she was so cold that she hungered for a bit of warmth.

There weren't many people on the way, not that any would spend time outside in this harsh winter and at night. However, the few people she had come across sent shivers down her spine when she saw their hungry gazes and the way they pinned on her prize - the deer. Their covetous look made Islinda straighten up, her body tensed and she swore to the gods, she would fight them to the death if they attempted to rob her.

She had worked hard for this and would not let another reap the benefit of her labor. Perhaps, it was the determined look in her eyes or the sight of her wicked-looking arrow she had taken out as a warning, each one she came across backed away. Hence, Islinda walked faster, desperate to get off the dangerous street even though her body protested badly.

By the time she finally got home and knocked on the wooden door, she had two visions. At the same time, she was so cold it hurt and a breath of relief passed through her lips when the door opened and she was staring at the face of Madam Alice. It was quite ironic because Islinda never thought there would come a day when she would be relieved to see her.

At first, her step-mother's expression was one of shock as if she had already written her off as dead - which wasn't surprising - before it quickly morphed into disgust when she realized it was just her  - and not someone special, like a suitor for her daughter, Remy - and finally great joy as it dawned on her that she had come back with something.

"I-I'm home…." Islinda's voice was a croak and didn't even realize that she was shaking so badly the movement almost seemed epileptic.

"Come in, come in…" Madam Alice's voice became endearing as if finally realizing her worth. Not that this was the first time Islinda proved it. To be fair, her worth was the only reason they kept her around - so she could fetch them food.

However, the instant Islinda put a foot forward, her world swirled and she found herself falling into never-ending darkness. Exhaustion from the ordeal finally took its toll on her and her eyes shut close. But while sleep should have been peaceful, hers was not at all.

Islinda could not tell what was happening but it felt like she had been tossed into the freezing waters of the deep sea and the next, a great heat washed over her to the point that it hurt. Groans and whimpers of pain slipped from her lips all night. She ached everywhere and felt like dying.

However, even through her ordeal, a face and thought were prevalent in her mind. Her Fae. She could not die before him. She was the only one that he had to nurse him and give him a fighting chance at life. His ethereal beauty filled her mind, especially his unnatural yet beautiful golden eyes. It was all she could see and think; it enchanted her.

She must have slipped in and out of consciousness or perhaps it was a vision or something, but it was blurry and her mind was muddled. But Islinda dreamt one of her stepsisters - Remy or Lillian, she couldn't tell - made her sit up before feeding her something that tasted so bad she gagged and wanted to throw it up.

"No, you don't!" The voice chided her before pushing her back on the bed.

"You would not die on us!" The voice warned her severally and Islinda felt her lips tug to the side. As if she had command over death, it sounded funny to her even in that delirious state.

However, her vision dimmed again and the image of her Fae came to mind again. So beautiful, she whispered before the darkness dug its claws so deep inside of her she wasn't able to arouse again. And this time, the sleep was peaceful.

Islinda finally woke up to the chirping sounds of birds and insects and she let out a sharp intake of breath. Her vision swarmed and she had to fight the thick fog that clouded her mind. Where was she? Suddenly, her miserable looking housetop came into view and Islinda sat up with a great speed that she came to regret afterward.

A sharp groan of pain left her lips when she tried to move and glanced down to see that her hands swelled. Frostbite, it came back to her. She should have known. There was no way spending that much time in the snow wouldn't amount to a bit of suffering. It explained the burning sensation she had suffered last night, it seems one of her stepsisters helped her escape the claws of death.

Although Islinda knew that they kept her alive for their own selfish purposes, she still couldn't help but feel grateful. As if on cue, Lillian appeared in her cramped room.

Islinda looked at her, she looked beautiful in her faded gown that had seen better days yet manageable. If only Lillian could detach from her family, Islinda had no doubt she would find a gentleman to settle down with. Unfortunately, birds of the same feather flock together, and she would likely grow old with her mother than part with her. Also, Islinda wouldn't wish such evil on any good man.

"Yes, I am…" Islinda wanted to say but her words were barely a whisper. Her throat was very dry and felt scratchy while her gums and teeth felt like they'd been covered in slime. She could even taste vomit in her mouth, just what happened last night?

As if she understood her crisis, Lilian bent and picked a cup of water on the footstool and gave it to her. Islinda accepted it and without even hesitating to think if the water was poisoned or one of their pranks, she chugged down, the tasteless liquid a healing balm down her throat. She felt better.

"More." She reached out and Lillian's lips twitched before lifting the pitcher and filling the plastic cup with water. It wasn't until the third drink that Islinda felt better. She lifted her face and saw the sour look on the girl's face, apparently, Lillian was not used to serving her. It was the opposite. Well, it seems there's room for a change.

"Thank you." Islinda finally said.

"What is the thank you for?" Lillian asked hauntingly with her arms folded on her chest, "Is it for taking care of your mess and saving your life or scaring the gods out of us after sleeping for two days?"

"T-two days?" Islinda choked out.

It was impossible, she had only slept for a night. Then Islinda got reminded of the enveloping darkness, it couldn't be that it was her sleeping all the way. Oh no, panic gripped her. It was weird but Islinda felt an urge that she was not supposed to be here. That someone out there needed her ….

"Oh, shite…." She finally remembered. It was the Fae.

"Shite?" Lillian echoed with a dumbfounded expression probably assuming that she just cursed her.

"No, no, no…." Her eyes grew wide in a panic, "It's not you…" But there was no use explaining to the girl because her expression hardened.

"You should come and eat your food before it gets cold. I had to shove porridge and medicines down your throat when you were unconscious and I'm sure that's not substantial enough." Lillian said firmly, then turned and left her small room.

Islinda groaned in both disappointment and frustration. Just when she was getting to like her. Although, Islinda knew deep down that the act of kindness was not going to last forever. Once the family had their fill, they would regain the strength to oppress her again.

At the same time, Islinda was desperate to get out of bed and go to the Fae, no, Valerie. It was weird calling him by that word when he had already offered her his name as a gesture of goodwill. It was said that a Fae's name carried power and could be used against them. In one word, Valerie giving her his name meant that he trusted her.

The thought warmed Islinda from the inside. Why did he do that? By the gods, was she blushing?

No, Islinda shook her head.

There was no way on earth she was crushing on a Fae. It has never been done! Impossible! An abomination!

She had to be careful because if her stepmother dared to suspect that she had a highly sought Fae under her possession, then Valerie would be in danger. Madam Alice would hire strong men in the village who would overpower her, oppress Valerie, and take him away to be sold to gods know where or whom?

Islinda strengthened her resolve, she would not let anyone lay a hand on her Fae. It was a promise, she would protect Valerie with her life.

That is if he was still alive.

But all she had learned was that her family couldn't change as much as you couldn't remove the stripes off a zebra. She almost lost her limbs to frostbite - although Valerie was part of the reason, not that they needed to know that - Islinda had hoped they would ration their limited resources as much as they could. "What?!" Islinda blinked up at him in surprise, her mouth hung open. She wanted to speak but her words failed her as she was still filled with surprise. Had it been a human spouting such nonsense, Islinda would have thought that he was pulling her leg or running crazy, but this was Valerie, a Fae and he looked so serious with the concern on his face and that was when it hit her that he really was ignorant. "Oh." Everything finally made sense to Islinda. In the same way, she had thought that all Faeries were wicked and cruel until she met Valerie and he proved her wrong, it seems the Fae had limited knowledge and conceited views about the humans too. Of course, why wouldn't it be so when the humans stayed in the human realm and the Fae in theirs as well? But then there were rumors of humans stolen by the Faeries or the foolish mortals who struck a deal with them and are unable to pay the cost in the end. It was more possible for a Fae to trick a human into crossing the wall than ki

Isaac knew that his life was over even before the royal decree was announced. He could tell from the way his fellow soldiers passed him sympathetic looks and some even shook their heads in pity. If he wasn't so positive, he would have thought that he had been given a death sentence. He tried to remain positive until the captain had called him and told him the "good" news, he was no longer required to serve the king because he has been granted in service to another, the cruel prince, Aldric. Isaac didn't know how to feel about the news. Perhaps, he shouldn't have asked for trouble in the first place by making himself known to the cruel prince if he couldn't handle the consequences. But then, he had thought it polite showing the cruel prince the way when others wouldn't. Sure, the prince had a horrible reputation, well, who was he kidding? He was dangerous, but the cruel prince was still a Fae. And a prince at that. It was right to be kind. Well, look where the kindness got him. Now

Islinda smelt him before she opened her eyes. It was amazing how she didn't take notice until now but Valerie smelt like smoke from a bonfire and some other spices that caused a low tug in her belly. Islinda did not know whether his scent had to do with the nature of his power, but she was very much tempted to dart her tongue out for a tiny lick of his flame. By the gods! Islinda jostled back from him as if she had been burned, which was kind of ironic since she had been thinking of tasting his flames. She must have lost her mind! Islinda wanted to slap her cheeks if that would bring her senses back. "Are you okay?" His honeyed voice asked and God knew she began to have inappropriate thoughts and it wasn't ladylike. Yes, she was a virgin but that didn't mean she was ignorant of what happens between a man and a woman in a relationship. "Are you okay?" Valerie asked once again, his eyes flickering down with concern and Islinda didn't realize until now that she was gnawing on her bott

"Your Highness, are you sure the prince is here?" Isaac asked as he stared at the abandoned wooden cottage ahead. "If my magic led us here, then he is there or don't you…." Prince Aldric turned to stare at him, "Trust my ability?" Issac swallowed as he was pinned by the prince's unwavering gaze. If this was a test, he was as good as dead if he failed. "Of course, I trust your ability, my prince." He said, making sure to imbue some amount of truth into his words else the prince sees through his flattery. "Good." The grin was back on his face now and his suffocating aura subsided so Isaac was able to let out a breath of relief. He almost thought he would die. Prince Aldric was back to staring at the cottage without making a move and Issac wondered what was going on in that mind of his. "What of the human?" The question slipped from his mouth. "What about the human?" Prince Adric arched a questioning brow at him and that gave him the confidence to continue. "If the prince is in t

Islinda's mind was a mess as she walked through the woods. She was still reeling from the kiss and it was safe to say she lost her mind just a bit. Of course, it was understandable considering that was her first kiss and it had left her shaken to the core. The kiss scene played in a loop in her mind and her cheeks heated up in embarrassment as she remembered the way she had grasped Valerie and returned the kiss with such fervent passion. "No!" Islinda clasped her cheeks and shut her eyes with a whimper. She shouldn't have done that! What had come over her?! Islinda wished the ground would open up and swallow her at this point. How was she going to face Valerie tomorrow? Also, what they just did, wasn't it illegal? A Fae couldn't be with a human, at least she hadn't heard of one. Was it possible for the both of them to be together? Would they be able to bear children? If they did bear children, what kind of creature would they be? Strangely sleep overtook him again, but even with his eyes closed, his other senses were alert and when he heard movements, he knew then that he wasn't alone. Nor was it Islinda this time. It was getting late and the human would not risk coming back here for the fear of her life. The vigil was held in the village hall and the arena was large enough to contain everyone. All of the villagers were on black and thoroughly covered up because of the cold. As if the weather wanted to honor the chief as well, the sun had come out towards evening, even though it had been brief. However, the cold was not Islinda's problem because she had a lot on her mind and they revolved around Eli and Valerie. She still couldn't accept the fact that the child had taken a liking to her evil stepsister after what she had done to him yesterday. It seemed odd and didn't make sense. Just what did Remy win him over with? It wasn't with her food because that alone was poison. But then, Islinda had to admit it was nice knowing someone would watch over Eli while she waited for Valerie to arrive. It would have been difficult seeing the Fae with the boy by her side and Islinda wasn't sure she wanted Eli privy to their interaction. Islinda had no idea what kind of relationship she had with Va

Issac was red-faced and looked like he was going to combust anytime soon. Just as "her poem" suggested, he was riding Maximus, her horse form, but not in the way she suggested. It seems that after passing her test, she had dropped all forms of pretense with him and now, he was on a talking horse. Yep, as if it couldn't get weirder. How couldn't he have seen the signs? Everything was pretty much obvious that she was not a normal horse. But then, Maxi was good at pretending. Now, he had to suffer through her horrible rhyme filled with sexual innuendo. "I'm satisfied with my ride,Now I've got to shake, shake, shake Shake my beautiful ass…." "Alright, that's enough!" Issac shouted and didn't need to ask twice, he got off the horse, his actions nimble and swift. He had been a soldier in the king's army after all and didn't find dismounting a horse one bit stressful. However, he was glaring at Maximus now, his ears were going to bleed anytime soon if she continued with that horrible p

Islinda didn't know she got to the chief's place, her mind had been racing the entire time. How could the man die at a critical time like this? If he were going to die, he should have at least found Eli's parents first before leaving. Now, she was left all alone to deal with the burden. The chief's place was filled to the brim with sympathizers who had come to offer their condolences to his family. It wasn't until that moment that the cold began to get to her and Islinda looked down to discover that she was barefooted and her toes were beginning to freeze. The shock had been so great, it had stripped her of all sense of reasoning. "Aiyo, how could you come out like that? Even if the chief's death is shocking, we cannot afford to lose a young soul too!" It took Islinda a minute to realize that the elderly woman was speaking to her. Islinda knew one from the marketplace, having sold one of her small animals to her. "Ahh, this…." She shifted on her toes uncomfortably, now embarrassed

"Good Morning big sister,"A grinning face was all she could see and Islinda nearly stumbled off the cot in the process. He startled her and how did she wake up this late? The sun was already peeking out through the window, her stepfamily was going to kill her."What's wrong big Sister? You look worried?" Adric inquired, noticing how quickly she made her bed."Eli, this is not the time for this. I need…." What does she need? She needed a breather, "I need to go about my morning chores and make sure the family is satisfied else they would take it out on you…." Islinda trailed off when she realized that was not the right thing to tell a child. She cleared her throat, coming to take Eli's hands in hers and bent to his height," When people are hungry, they get angry and do crazy things. But don't worry, no one will touch you." She smiled at him brightly, hoping that was enough to assure him.Now that she thought about it, the boy was more mature than she thought. He didn't throw tantrums

"How do I look?" Maximus twirled around in her new dress stolen from a villager's clothing line. Yes, they were in the village now at Issac's insistence. Her shy Fae threw quite a tantrum, insisting to meet her master now. Hence, she decided to train him like a dog by feeding him crumbs. Haha, she was joking. Maximus merely brought him to the village where the master was, enough to satisfy his desire but not exactly feeding him the information he needed. Issac was relieved now, she was no longer naked and his tunic had been returned to him. However, her scent now lingered on the material and she smelled like lush green grass and the wild. Issac caught him at last, horrified at the thought that he found the scent desirable. He stood straight at once, this was all a distraction. The sooner he was back in the Fae realm, the better for him. "I don't see the prince," He reminded her the reason he had agreed to come to the village with her - after helping her steal clothes of course. Not

Panic rose through Remy when she was unable to move a muscle. It was a lucid dream and she should be able to direct and control the course of her dream. But that wasn't the case. It was almost as if she was pushed into the seat of a carriage ride and someone else manipulated her dream. At first, she was unable to see anything past the encroaching darkness that sent chills down her spine and her instincts warned her to run! To wake from this slumber! But there she lay helpless, squirming in real life, not that there was anyone to help her. And suddenly, there he was, hovering over her, it was the young boy that the bitch Islinda had brought home. Remy should not be afraid of him but it was the feeling of a prey recognizing a bigger predator. There was a menacing energy around him that made her heart begin to pound loudly in her chest. Something was not right about the boy. "Ahh," He rasped, taking a good look at his handwork, "You don't look so scary anymore, do you? How easy it was

"Come, lie with me, Eli," Aldric raised a brow at that comment until he realized that she meant it literally and his excitement faded. Tsk, what a disappointment. He almost thought that she was giving herself to him and he would have taken her up on the offer. It was not every day that a woman offered her body to him. But then, it was understandable since he had glamoured himself to look like a child and the human would be committing a crime if she forced himself on him. That is if he doesn't kill her first for trying such. However, Adric was not ready to end her pathetic mundane life yet until he understood her relationship with his brother. Humans were less than animals in Aldric's sight. A race responsible for their own annihilation was not worthy of his respect. He knew them for their selfish ambitions and wickedness except for this female human in front of him, she was the most foolish of them all. She was smart yet stupidly naive. How could she trust so easily? Or has no one

"Where have you been?!" Madam Alice round on Islinda as soon as she came into the house. Not that Islinda did not see it coming, which was why she quickly pushed Eli behind her so he would not see the scene. Madam Alice was so furious that she didn't notice the young boy until Remy said, "Who is this boy and where did you pick him from?" The disgust in her tone and the way she looked down at Eli as if he was mere dirt made anger course through Islinda. Eli wore simple clothing of a shirt and trousers, but the addition of her thick and longer coat stunted his height and was off-color, hence making him look a bit haggard. Even at that, one could never mistake the boy for a beggar because Eli looked healthy and fine with his chubby cheeks. The beggars Islinda knew from their village were malnourished and sickly thin; you could see the outline of their ribs. If there was a beggar here, it would be her family because they would have been out begging for food in this cold winter if it wa

"You can see the village chief now," Those words were a huge relief to Islinda who had been impatiently tapping her foot against the ground. She was so full of nerves and wanted to get this over with already. Islinda rose from the bench, pulling Eli to his feet with her and flashing him a gentle smile when she saw the questions on his face. He was a quiet yet observant kid and Islinda was extremely grateful she didn't have to deal with any childish tantrums because she was exhausted. She said to him, "You don't have to be afraid, Eli. This is the house of our village chief and he would help us find your mother, okay?" The boy nodded his head in acceptance and Islinda was so awed by his obedience that she couldn't help but reach out, attempting to ruffle his hair playfully only for his cold gaze to cut through her and she stopped short, her hand hung midway. What was that? Her heart couldn't help but skip a beat and it wasn't out of excitement but fear. Eli was merely a child but
