Serena’s PoV

It was still early morning and the weather was chilly as I came out; my hands went towards my enlarged belly. It had become a much quieter camp in the following weeks after the annihilation of Gloria’s magic as well as the removal of the plague. For the first time in a long time, wolves from Ardan’s pack, the rogues, and the refugees joined each other in constructing homes and clearing wreckage. However, I could not feel at ease; it was as if a storm was brewing in the background.

“Serena,” Rachel’s voice called for me from behind. I turned to see her walking towards me with a basket of herbs in her hands. Her cheeks were red, and I could not even let myself not notice how she was looking at Zone, who was busy with strengthening the outer line of defence.

“Rachel,” I said with a smile, pointing at Zone. “You should go talk to him.”

She blushed, negating the statement with subtle head movements. “I am overwhelmed by the work load at the moment.”

“Rachel,” I said in a stern

Ardan’s PoVIt was already the middle of day when the sun was setting over the camp. Most wolves were already out hunting for food and more supplies. Serena and I walked side by side with her arm linked through mine. Her stomach had gotten big. It had been months of quiet, a stillness that was rare and cherished in our pack..“It actually feels kinda suspicious that it has been so quiet”, Serena spoke.“Don’t jinx it,” I joked, holding her hand gently. She laughed.”Have you given more consideration to the names?” she asked lifting her head slightly to look at me.“For the baby?” I pretended to think deeply. “If it’s a girl, I was thinking it would be good if we could name her Evelyn.”Serena came to a halt and looked at me with a warm smile manifesting on her lips. “Evelyn?”I nodded. “It feels... right. A name that conveys strength along with elegance.”“And if it’s a boy?” she asked further, raising her eyebrow with a teasing smirk on her lips.I grinned. “Ardan Jr., of course.”Se

ARDAN’s PoVIt was a silent night. Evelyn started to wake up in my arms as I was swaying her back and forth. Her baby-like hands clutched the collar of my shirt. As small as she was, she had no idea the burden she had on her back.“You are safe,” I murmured, tracing the brim of her cheek with my thumb. “Oh, I’ll see to it that you remain like that.”She only breathed gently and deeply in the silence of the night. At that moment, our world was peaceful, as if the turbulences and tragic events which had occurred in the past several months were just a nightmare. That moment did not last long and it was ruined by the appearance of Draven in the tent. He looked rather serious and did not have the usual relaxed character that he usually possessed.“What is it, Draven?” I asked, although deep inside I didn’t know if I really wished to hear what they had to say.He paused for a moment, staring blindly before his gaze shifted to Evelyn. “It’s about your daughter.”Instantly, I stiffened and my

Ardan’s PoV17 years laterOver the years, my pack and Joachim’s have been able to coexist in the same territory but different lands. We had rebuild enough that were no longer staying in tents but high rise buildings.I sat comfortably settled behind my desk sifting through maps and reports. The years had not been completely kind to me. I stared at the ceiling for what felt like hours, seventeen years of leading a fractured pack, of raising Evelyn alone, of waiting—always waiting—for Serena to wake.My contemplations were cut short by the appearance of Alpha Joachim. Standing at the entrance, he entered through the doorway, with his face as scowled as ever.“Ardan,” Joachim greeted.“Joachim,” I confirmed, pointing to the seat near me to let him know to sit down. “What brings you here?”Joachim unrolled a parchment and laid it flat on the table. “We must talk about these unpredictable associations we’ve been hearing about. Threats that are outside of our borders are increasing. It is

Ardan PoVSeventeen years. It has been seventeen years of struggle and longing for Serena to regain consciousness. I waited for her, did not lose faith. But in recent days, something inside me changed. The council elders had been clear: Being too concerned of Serena and our family, I was putting the pack at risk. They thought that my leadership had diminished, that I was no longer an Alpha but someone whose wife has just died. And maybe they were right. I had taken a decision which is very painful for any mate – to shut the door on my heart. In my mind, I knew and forced myself to believe that Serena would never wake up from such a state. That was the only option I had because I could not continue with my life the way it was before. Yet that decision had established a barrier between me and my daughter, Evelyn. One day, I stood, observing the hunters as they came back. As I looked into the eyes of each hunter I managed to greet them with a nod; the last one in line was Marcus. At twen

Ardan’s PoVPiles of papers lay on my desk including reports on the available resources, criminal movements of the pack and internal conflicts. I rubbed my head, attempting to concentrate on the paper before me, but the only thing on my mind was Evelyn. Her words I heard earlier were so harsh that they affected me more than I would like to admit. The sound of a knock on the door interrupted me suddenly. “Enter,” I said confidently and sat upright on the chair.Josephine entered. Despite wearing an impassive face, her eyes were a little wide, observing the unorganised papers strewn on the desk and my unkempt appearance.“You look like you haven’t slept for a week,” she commented, shutting the door after her. “Do you ever take a break?”“I don’t have the luxury,” I said softly, stretching backwards while resting my back against the leather chair. “There’s too much to do.”Josephine moved closer and rested her hand on the table’s edge. “Ardan, you cannot be an effective leader if you are

  • Mate? Or Die!   Chapter 194 ARDAN TORMENT

Ardan’s PoVThe days after paternity spell left me a wreck. To believe that Evelyn, was not my real daughter. Deep down I knew she wouldn’t be but now that I actually knew the truth and felt like a big mess, I despised myself for this feeling. She was still my daughter, still Serena’s child— our child in every way that one can imagine. However, every time I glanced at her, all I could see was the shadow of Caden teasing me from the other world.I distanced myself from her, angered and guilty. My duties as Alpha did help in distracting me from the torment, yet the moment I was done working, the torment started again. Evelyn noticed. How could she not? She always had those perceptive looks that did not leave anything unnoticed. It did not take her much time before she got the chance to approach and pull me aside to the common area of the pack house.“Dad,” she started firmly, “why have you been avoiding me?“I attempted to dismiss her complaints using the alibi of being bogged down with

Evelyn’s PoVLately, things did not feel right at all, almost as if the world was out of tune in a way. My father was avoiding me, Marcus was ignoring me and secrets that I wasn’t privy to seemed to be everywhere. All I could sense was that there must be something colossal looming behind it—something that close friends were hiding from me.When I found Marcus, he was perched on a log at the edge of the camp, honing his blade, which was something he always did when he needed time to introspect. I could tell even from where I was standing that something was very off with him.“Marcus,” I whispered as I approached him.He flicked another glance at me, his was face impassive, then he looked back to the sword. “Evelyn.”I took a seat next to him. “Are you okay?”He paused for a moment gripping the handle more firmly. “I’m fine.”I frowned. “You don’t seem f

  • Mate? Or Die!   Chapter 196 FORBIDDEN FEELINGS

Ardan’s PoVThe situation in the camp had been tense for some time. It began with word battles—a few barbs exchanged between my pack and Joachim’s rogues in passing—though recently, things had turned physical. Today, I found myself in the middle of the training grounds, clapping my hands to restore order after another fight.“This is exactly the kind of attitude that we don’t want around here! You’re all children!” I boomed, making my voice heard above all the ruckus. “We are supposed to be on the same side, are we not? How can this be happening?”The two fighters angrily retreated, cursing under their breath.“Ardan,” a voice whispered. It was low and commanding. I looked round to see Josephine coming nearer and her aura demanded respect at first sight. “Let me handle this.”She stood between the two groups and her words were deliberately chosen and diplomatic. &ld

He could tell I couldn’t resist him.“No.” I joked but Marcus could tell it was all a lie. I tried to let myself out of his grip jokingly but he pinned me down to the ground gently.“You’re mine, Evelyn. I mean I wanted to but then again… my mum.“Can I?” He asked politely.“Uh-huh.” I whispered, nodding my head.He went in and at first it was painful but after the first few thrusts, I was having the best time of my life.“Is this your first?” I asked. Marcus hesitated to answer and I laughed.“You’re like seven years older than me of course you have.” I said as I moaned in between. “You’re so good.” I moaned.“I could say the same about you.” Marcus grinned, breathing hea

Author PoVCouncil room tension remained strong and difficult to breathe. The golden flames in Serena's eyes made her tighten her fists when she turned against Rachel and Ardan."You failed to defend my daughter when they sentenced her." Her voice broke in two from feeling betrayed when she spoke. She was really angry as she confronted Rachel and Ardan through her words. The pain of her loss made Rachel's face immobile. "She took Zone's life," she spoke plainly to them. “The damage she caused doesn't matter if it happened by accident. He’s dead because of her.”Serena’s breath hitched. She repeated her defence by saying it was not Evelyn's responsibility. “She wasn’t in control. You should recognise how Gloria influenced her. Evelyn would never—""Would never?" Rachel scoffed. “She already did.”Ardan interrupted with his measured tone before Serena could respond. He studied her showing deep emotions Serena could not recognise. “The moment Caden exiled me you stood by silently. And I

  • Mate? Or Die!   Chapter 228 EVELYN’s EXILE

Author PoVJosephine had to be patient, as she knew that the truth, when used effectively, could cut deeper than claws or teeth. She had spent weeks spying on him, biding her time for the right moment to act. When she came upon Isiah alone, she drew closer with an air of casual interest, getting into some small talk about the current tensions in the pack. It wasn’t much to get him to let his guard down—he had always loved a good conversation. He hesitated the moment she mentioned Zone, but Josephine prompted him to continue, managing to play along with some sympathy. She had assured him that once the truth would set free, it would give all relief to those who needed it. Then he finally broke the silence she had been wishing for when he told that, during the battle, Evelyn had been the one who had killed Zone. It hadn’t been with intent, but still, it was true.Josephine felt no surprise. She had had her suspicions since Luca mentioned it to her. The moment she left Isiah, she made her

  • Mate? Or Die!   Chapter 227 A PROPHECY REVISITED

Evelyn’s PoVFor the last few weeks, both physically and emotionally, it had been an exhausting experience. The burden of my powers, my past, and that how much the pack disbelieved me weighed heavy on my shoulders. To this day, walking through that pack was no easy feat. I could feel the whispers, sideways glances, the fear unspoken. Nothing I could do seemed to work—I was somehow stuck with wounds too deep to heal.My mother, of course, had always picked up on it. She noticed everything. One evening, after the patrols had returned and the pack settled in for the night, she summoned me to her room. The way she had set herself at the wooden table, hands folded tightly, made me realise she must have something serious to talk by all means. Maybe Rachel had told someone about the truth of Zone’s death."Sit," she said gently, indicating the chair opposite her with her head.I did as I was told, and I could feel the air swell into some heavy tension that we both couldn't vocalise."You've

  • Mate? Or Die!   Chapter 226 A TRUTH REVEALED

Author’s PoVJosephine waited while ever so patiently inserting her influence. She made sure that the pack was thoroughly prepared to follow her very soon. Little by little, a few calls here and there with the pack elders, appearance as the concerned mother in moments that would demand it, a strategically placed comment, this was how she slowly began to undermine Serena's standing. The birth of Dorian changed everything. He was Ardan's son; he was the legitimate heir. And Josephine saw to it that all in the pack understood it that way.Everything was being calculated.Josephine was at the centre of every pack gathering, dispensing advice as if that had always been her lot with the pack leaders. She reminded them how strong the pack had to be and how they could not afford to trust anyone compromised by dark magic. And when she was certain the time was right, she made her boldest move yet and questioned whether Evelyn had earned her place in the pack. This was during a pack meeting call

  • Mate? Or Die!   Chapter 225 JOSEPHINE’s NEWBORN

Ardan’s PoVTwo months later….A newborn screamed loudly in the room; disturbing silence everywhere it spread. Josephine lay on the bed, worn out though there was clearly a hidden shine of victory hidden in the background. She rocked the small bundle wrapped in rags and whispered reassuring words. My son.I swallowed hard.A son. My blood. My pride.I did not know what to feel.I stood stupefied, watching. It was as though an iron chain dropped onto my shoulder, and as much as I wished to deny it, this little one would turn my world upside down.Josephine looked at me. "Do you want to hold him?"I hesitated. My hands felt too big, too rough. But just as I was about to respond, she reached forward and carefully placed the newborn in my arms. His size surprised me. A soft ball up in little fists, the baby opened and clenched its eyes, squirming in discomfort before sleeping soundly. A son. I'd never thought I'd ever have one, I thought I’d never get to have my own blood yet here he lay,

Evelyn PoVI stayed seated on top of the wooden training grounds fence while I watched the fighters below lock together in combat. Weakness dragged down my body until it felt like an invisible burden I had to carry. I had abused my powers beyond what was safe since I could not stop myself.I needed to show my worth to my mother as well as Ardan and Luca and each member of the pack.Even though everything pointed at me badly the accusations persisted through the air like an intense burden.“She’s cursed."“She’s dangerous."The pack members even believed I should have died during the tragedy with Gloria.I clenched my fists.Taken back by a familiar tone I turned to see who spoke behind me.“You’re wearing yourself out.”Standing before me was Marcus who watched me with concern while crossing his arms. After studying me carefully with his dark eyes he kept looking at me but I stared elsewhere.“I can handle it.” I muttered.Marcus jumped after me as he joined me on top of the fence. “Y

  • Mate? Or Die!   Chapter 223 THEIR APPROVAL

Authors PoVAs Serena stood at the centre of the war room, the morning air was very cool. Maps were spread out on the wooden table before her. The tension in the room was thick, filled with murmurs of worry as the pack elders and warriors kept gathering. The scout conveyed disturbing intelligence indicating that a new pack under an unknown leader was regrouping. Where they had come from no one knew, but they were fast growing and did pose a direct danger to the very tenuous peace they were trying to establish.Serena exhaled as she looked from face to face around the room, many battle-worn and weary of the endless blood-shedding and survival. Their morale was low, and she realised that it was perhaps justified."We should be prepared," Serena said firmly, scanning the faces around the room. "Whatever their intentions, we can't afford to be taken unaware."There were some murmurs of agreement, but Serena could see doubt in their eyes. Some of them had already lost far too much.At the
