“What do you want?” Damien asked without even turning around to see what was happening, his voice cool and calm. It was almost as if he had expected it to happen and had seen it one too many times to be fazed by it.

“Turn around with that bag,” he ordered, and Damien did exactly as he said, his eyes going towards my face immediately.

He gave me a slow blink of assurance, and I could only nod at him as I chose to believe that he knew what he was doing and how to handle the situation without anyone having to get hurt.

“Again, what do you want?” Damien repeated. This time, his voice was stern, as if he was indirectly letting the man know that his patience was wearing thin.

I wanted to remind him so badly that he was not the one with the knife, and this man could easily have me killed in front of him if he smelled anything that seemed like a threat. I didn’t want to die before getting my mother back. Not like that.

“What’s in the bag?” the man ask

Damien and I stared at each other for a moment as we silently processed the fact that we no longer had access to privacy in the house anymore. I picked up my phone and dialed the number of the kidnapper to tell him that I had done the job for added measure. “I know, I know. You have done quite okay with the setup. If I have any complaints against it, I will not hide it from you,” he informed. “Is there anything you want from me right now? I’m willing to do it if it means I can see my mother sooner.” I looked at Damien as I said that, and he gave me a nod of approval to let the kidnapper hear the desperation in my voice for him to trust that I would not disappoint him. “Do not get too eager, Lauren. Your mother can wait, and I still have to know that the old man of yours does not know about this little arrangement of ours. I’ll call you anytime soon. If you do not pick up, I’ll take it as a sign that you are ignoring me.” I took a deep breath,

It didn’t surprise me too much that Darla’s apology to me was not genuine, but getting proof of it still had a certain hit to it that took me aback for a moment after she told me to leave her brother alone. “I don’t think I understand,” I said, shaking my head as she frowned even deeper at me. “I don’t know what little agreement you both have with each other, but I already told you I’m protective over my brother. You look like a lot of trouble, from how young you are to the situation your mother is in. Not to mention that you were once Conrad’s girlfriend. Don’t you get a sense of shame when you remember that Damien is Conrad’s uncle?” I stared at her for a moment as I tried to come up with words that would not sound too disrespectful when I said them out loud, no matter how hard it was. “Damien is an adult,” I lectured, feeling strange about telling her something that was brazenly obvious. “He knows what he’s doing, even more than I am. I don’t understand w

“What do you want?” I demanded from the kidnapper. “Well, first of all, I want us to get even more familiar with each other. Call me Jax if you want to,” he introduced, and I could hear the way he taunted me in his tone of voice. “You said you had my first mission for me. Please, tell me what it is,” I said. “I want you to go into your old man’s office, manage to fish him out of there, and I want you to find a file which says New Construction. When you find it, take a picture of every single document in the file and send them all to me,” he commanded. “And you have just thirty minutes to do that,” he said, hanging up and not giving me the time to say anything else. I walked out and towards the office, knocking on the door and waiting for Damien to open the door. “Come on in,” I heard him from inside the office, causing me to open the door and walk in to meet him raising his brow at me. I picked up my phone and texted him exactly

Jax had Damien’s cellphone number. Damien was now on the phone with the man who had kidnapped my mother. My eyes widened when I heard Jax’s voice come through the speaker of Damien’s phone, making me slap a hand over my mouth in surprise. “May I know who this is? It’s quite disrespectful to call someone if you’re going to insult them,” Damien said, but he obviously knew who it was from the way he was looking at me and communicating with his eyes for me to calm down and listen. Jax laughed in response to what Damien had said. “I knew you would be some sort of serious man to talk to. Even your angry voice sounds like you’re discussing business with me,” he teased. “Anyway, I wanted to ask you where you are in the house now.” I started to ask myself if he had caught on to the silence, and my heart jumped when I figured it out. If he was listening to Damien from the wiretaps as well, he would know that we were in a room where there was no wiretap.

I showed Damien the text that I had gotten when he was done with work later that evening, texting him to ask what to do and if it was true from the kidnapper’s side this time as I had been tricked one too many times. He took my hand and guided me to the guestroom, where he could speak without having to fear that he would be heard. “I’ve decided that we should have a small wedding with just family and some friends before you go ahead with this once again,” he suggested, pulling me into confusion. “Why hurry? What difference would it make?” I asked. “I have a group of people employed to protect my family, and my family alone. They wouldn’t consider your mother one if something were to happen to her and I needed them to help her. She has a higher chance of being protected when she’s seen as a member of my family,” he explained. I didn’t know who the people were, but if they were working for him, why couldn’t they follow his orders and protect any

“Just who do you think you are to call me and tell me something like that?” I snapped as soon as Conrad stopped talking. Jade tapped me on the arm and gave me a questioning brow raise, but I shook my head and blinked at her to assure her that everything would be fine. “This is not the time to argue with me over what you think I’m saying or not. You may think you know what you’re doing, but you don’t. I know that you’re desperate for all the help you can get and that’s why you’re going through with the wedding this fast, but it’s not worth it. You’re better off sorting this out by yourself.” There was some kind of urgency in his voice that made me want to give his words a thought, but the words he used threw me off and annoyed me enough to postpone thinking about anything until I was alone. “I am not desperate for anything,” I denied. “I think it’s better for you to forget that I have this number. Never call me again, and focus on your fiancée.”

  • Married To The Devil   Chapter Thirty-Seven

Due to the conditions that I had grown up in, I never had the time to sit and daydream about what my dream wedding would be. I didn’t have a certain Prince Charming image in my head until I met Conrad, and I never thought that I would be getting married to his uncle right in front of him while he was engaged to my former best friend, Shirley. “I don’t think I’m breathing properly. I think the corset of the dress is too tight,” I admitted to Jade, who sat by me in the car on the way to the venue of the wedding. Jade had shown up earlier with an entire team of stylists to do my hair and makeup, and I had been uneasy and nervous since then. “I think you should try breathing in,” Jade laughed, taking my hand and giving it a small squeeze to help me take a deep breath. “You keep holding your breath.” “I don’t have a father. I don’t have anyone to walk me down the aisle,” I confessed as my chest tightened with the urge to break down and sob.

I had grown sick and tired of everyone around me telling me to leave Damien and that I was making a huge mistake, treating me like a child that they couldn’t explain a thing as they expected me to make decisions based on how they felt about things. “You know, things would be so much better if you just told me what this whole thing is all about. I still don’t know who you all think the problem is – me or Damien,” I told Darla, exhausted from everything. “I’m afraid you can’t know what it’s about. As for who the problem is, it’s neither of you. I just believe that you’re vulnerable and susceptible to some things that you might not like when you start to live with Damien as his wife.” I found it comical that she was telling me that after I had gotten married to Damien. There was also an urge to ask her if she had said the same thing to Katarina, her friend. Instead, I turned around and walked away. “There’s really nothing we can do about it now,” I mutt

6 MONTHS LATER “What are you doing?” I laughed as Damien pulled me out of bed that evening and practically sat me down in front of the vanity to brush my hair and get me ready. “The dinner’s in one hour,” he reminded. “I don’t want to be late for this.” I frowned and turned around to face him, prompting him to stop brushing my hair. “So, you’re worried about family dinners all of a sudden? You know, the last time we had this, you seemed like you would have been better off dead than being there.” “People change.” He shrugged, a grin sitting on his face that made me realize that there was something he wasn’t telling me. I couldn’t drill him about it because I had a secret of mine. I took the brush from his hand and started to do it myself when he placed a kiss on my cheek. “I love you,” he said. I had gotten used to his random love confessions whenever he felt the need to say it. It had been six months since…well, everything. I moved back fr

“Lauren, are you okay?” Damien asked as he opened the door to the house where he was staying later that night. Instead of giving him an answer, I pushed myself into his arms and broke down in tears. That might, I cried all the tears that I had refused to cry the whole time. Every emotion that I had refused to let out and express, all of it was on the ground around. And Damien just let me. “You’re fine, you’re fine,” he told me in sweet whispers as he led me to the bedroom and set me down on the bed. He held me there for as long as he possibly could. “He was doing that to them for years. Shirley and I were friends—best friends—in high school, and I didn’t even notice. How could I not notice what she was going through at the time?” I asked when I had no more tears left. “What do you mean? What was she going through?” Damien asked, sounding confused as he stared at me and waited for me to recollect and gather myself. “Her father was taking advantage of

I had spent two more nights in the hotel biting my nails anxiously as I waited for any update from Jameson about Shirley’s father and if he had been caught. I spent those days wondering if he knew now that she was dead, and if he felt guilty about being a big factor in it. It was no surprise that I jumped and snatched my phone from the nightstand when his name flashed on my screen one evening while I was forcing myself to close my eyes and go to sleep. “Lauren, I need you to help me identify the bastard,” his voice boomed coolly into the phone when I picked it up. “I might be a bit sorry for him if he’s not the one and I got the wrong guy. I’ve taken matters into my hands right now.” “I’m coming. I’m coming right now. Send me the address,” I rambled. His words sent a new rush to me, the sleep that was eluding me long forgotten as I got up and dashed out of bed and started gettingready to leave. When Jameson hung up, a quick text from his numbe

I stared at the unopened email that had been scheduled to be sent to me by Shirley. Several questions whirled in my head as I sat on the edge of my bed, not sure what to do or even whether to do anything at all. Had she planned to send that, knowing what she would do to herself? Was she going to apologize in the email? Was I even ready to open it? “Oh, Shirley.” I shook my head with a defeated sigh. God knew I loved her with everything I had in me, but she went ahead to stab me in the back. And even at that, I still loved and cared about her. Was Katarina’s death really all that drove her to do what she did? The more questions I had, the clearer it became to me that the answers I needed, along with closure, were trapped in that email message that I had refused to open. Finally, I clicked on the bold letters that showed the subject of the email, and it came into full view, to the detriment of my heart. To: LAUREN. Subject: I’M SORRY… ‘By the tim

I didn’t know how long I stood there, watching Conrad choke on his tears above Shirley’s body. My heart broke for him, and I could feel Damien’s rigid body standing beside me. “Let’s go,” Conrad finally said as he got up and used the sleeve of his shirt to wipe his tears. “We need to take her away and give her a funeral. She may have done horrible things, but she was not entirely a horrible person.” Conrad turned to me with a faint smile on his face. “Are you coming, too?” I froze as my mind whirled with thoughts upon thoughts. I hadn’t thought about the funeral, going to it. I didn’t even think that I would be leaving Beverly Hills that soon after just getting there. “I don’t think I should. I mean, I just moved here. Leaving would be difficult,” I said. “I’m not asking you to leave Beverly Hills permanently, Lauren,” he argued. “I just want you to attend the funeral and return. I know you don’t want to be there, especially after everything she did to you

I opened my eyes the next morning the most satisfied I had been in the past few days. There was a small smile on my face as I snuggled even deeper into Damien’s chest. It felt like leaving was something to not even be thought about. “Good morning,” he said, his voice startling me as he kissed me on the head. “Did you sleep good?” “I did,” I answered as I finally got the strength to sit up, getting a good view of him. Before I could say a word, there was a knock on my door. I got out of bed after a moment and opened the door to find Maria standing there with a Tupperware container in her hands and an apologetic smile on her face. “Can I come in?” She asked. At first, I considered shaking my head and telling her that it wasn’t the best time for her to come in, but I decided against it. I stepped aside for her to walk in, which she did. I took note of how she looked around in the living room as if trying to find something. “Why are you here this early, Maria?

My feet were glued to the ground, my mouth gaping open without much consciousness as I still tried to get more air in my lungs. I didn’t know whether it was Damien’s presence or the fact that I had finally stopped moving, but my lungs didn’t seem to be allowing much air. “I came as soon as I could,” he said, glancing at Melissa. “She didn’t want to let me in.” “Of course I didn’t let you in!” Melissa scoffed apologetically as she now helped me move forward. “You think I hand the keys to anyrandom man who walks in here and claims to know a tenant?” Without paying any more mind to her, Damien approached me and got me out of her arms. I had half a mind to collapse into his touch and break down, but I held myself upright as Melissa helped me open the door. “Are you going to be okay?” She asked me, still looking worried for me. “What even happened to you?” “Just a little run, I’m fine. As soon as I drink water, I’ll be fine. Thank you,” I said. She took

Damien hung up the phone without another word. I didn’t know what to do with that response or the lack of it. I fell into the couch and had to stop myself from crying. Had he finally gotten sick and tired of my constant back and forth with him? I didn’t even get the chance to tell him just how much I loved him. What was the point of doing it anyway? Nothing was going to get fixed that way. “Hey, are you okay?” Fred placed a gentle hand on my shoulder after a while of me sitting and staring at nothing. I jumped at the suddenness. “I said your food is ready. Let’s go.” We walked into the kitchen, where he had spread garlic bread and toast with sunny side up eggs. A pot of coffee was brewing on the counter as we both sat. Fred let me dig into the food, but I couldn’t shake off the effect that his long and hard stare had on me. “Is there something you want to talk about?” I engaged, letting him know I could tell that he was staring. “Oh, um.” He cleared

“Lauren?” I grunted, turning around and waking up as I heard my name. Fred shook me awake, and the first thing I saw when I opened my eyes was my phone in front of my face. “What is it?” I asked, sitting up on the couch where I had fallen asleep after arguing with Fred about where to sleep since he wanted me to take the bed for him to take the couch. “Your phone is ringing. I just walked by and saw it,” he said, handing me the phone. I rubbed my eyes, trying to focus on the screen of the phone and the caller ID when the phone stopped ringing. I looked up at Fred who has his arms crossed and was leaning against the door which led to the kitchen. “Aren’t you going to call who it is back? It could be an emergency, especially after what happened yesterday.” All of a sudden, I was reminded of the yesterday’s incident and what I had witnessed. A headache was brewing in my head now, and I grabbed the phone as tightly as I could. I wasn’t sure I was r
