I walked slowly down the stairs, but I guess the universe was not on my side today; she noticed my presence and turned, something like fear flashing through her eyes, and she immediately disconnected the call, hiding the phone behind her back.

I furrowed my brow at her and tended to ignore it. "Why did you end the call when you saw me?" I asked her.

"No..no, b..baby, why would I do that?" she stuttered. "We were done talking, and I was about to end it, but the sudden shadow behind me startled me," she said.

With both hands firmly in my pockets, I arched an eyebrow and she smiled charmingly. "Baby, why did you follow me? Hold on, you are suspecting me," she asked.

To avoid making her angry, I had to deny it: "I wasn't, I just wanted to get some water." With that, I walked past her and smiled back at her, even though the smiles did not quite reach my eyes.

I walked down to the kitchen and went to the refrigerator, where I grabbed a bottle of chilled water and gulped it down. I l
