Chapter 1

1. Isadora

- Your name, please!

- Isadora Dixon.

- Right, Isadora! We have a vacancy available for a pantry. It's a long way from what your resume offers us, but.... - I take a deep breath. The truth is that I've been around so much and I've spread my resume all over this city and nothing. And the worst part is that I can't wait any longer. I need a job and I need it yesterday!

- All right, I'll take this one!

- Are you sure?

- Unfortunately I don't have much choice. I need a job and a salary urgently. - I force a smile at the girl on the other side of the counter at the employment agency.

- That's fine! I'll write down the address for you and call D'Angelo to let them know you'll be taking this position.

- Thanks, Dany! - I wait for the girl to make the notes and as soon as I leave the building, I go straight to D'Angelo Corporation.

A job in one of the largest administration and accounting companies in the country would be a unique opportunity for my career. Serving coffee, cleaning counters and tables was not what I had in mind, however, for today it serves me well. My life has not been very easy since Andrew Dixon, my father passed away in a car accident. It's like he was the axis that held everything in place. Since then John Dixon, my older brother has left home in search of his adventures and my mother Sara Dixon hasn't had much of a will to live lately. Then came the debts that almost left us without a roof over our heads and without food, or both. Anyway, serving coffee is what will keep us going as best we can for a while. With a deep breath, I raise my head and look up at the sumptuous skyscraper, forcing myself to enter it. Inevitably I observe the luxury throughout the hall and walk up to the huge counter of a sleek black marble and introduce myself to the young woman behind it.

- Good morning, my name is Isadora Dixon. The employment agency sent me for the position in the scullery. - I hand her the paper and she reads it silently, giving me a professional smile.

- 'I'll let you know you're here, Miss Dixon. - I just nod a yes to the girl as she picks up the phone and speaks to someone. - 'Okay, head to the employee elevator and press the third floor button. Someone will be waiting for you.

- Thank you! - I couldn't imagine going into a place like this through the service area, after all, I studied so hard and dedicated myself for years on end that I expected to at least walk in the front door and occupy a room of my own. Dreams, you can't believe them! The elevator's TIM alerts me that I have arrived on my floor and as soon as the doors open a man in his thirties wearing a cheap suit flashes me a gaudy smile.

- You must be Miss Dixon. I'm Peter Thompson and I'm in charge of this sector.

- It's a pleasure, Mr. Thompson! - I extend a hand with a cordial smile to the man who will probably be my boss from now on, as I step out of the elevator.

- Please, just call me Peter. Now, come this way. - He asks, leading me down a long, wide corridor, and we go to the last door. In the scullery there are some girls wearing dark blue uniforms with white aprons and caps, with the logo of a company I don't know. Probably D'Angelo outsources this kind of service. - Put that on, I need you to be ready for us to start. - Taken aback, I just arch my eyebrows as I stare at the tall man holding out the uniform.

- Ah... like, now?! - I stutter as I had no idea I would be starting my first day today, let alone now. I mean, I didn't say anything to anyone and mom stayed home alone. Damn!

- Is there a problem, Miss?

- Oh, no, it's fine! Where can I change?

- There's an employee restroom back down the hall, the third door.

I grab my uniform and leave the scullery to change, and when I return to the kitchen, Peter introduces me to the dozens of staff standing in a row before him. Before long, I discover that my first task of the day is to organize a breakfast in one of the meeting rooms on the 26th floor. Everything seems to be very quick and pragmatic here, and in the blink of an eye I have a silver trolley in front of me containing some trays with toast, cookies, croissants, a bottle of coffee and another with water, a teapot with tea, some cups and glasses, and a jug of juice. The meeting room is completely empty and it makes me feel more comfortable to leave everything organized in a corner of the wall next to a huge window that has the most beautiful view of New York City. As soon as I'm done, I leave, leaving the double doors closed, and immediately go back to my sector to follow the next orders.

- How do you like your first day? - Anne, one of the employees asks sitting next to me at lunchtime. She opens a plastic container and the smell of home-cooked food spreads through the air in the same instant. I shrug at her question.

- "Not bad," I laugh, opening the wrapper of a cereal bar I had in my bag.

- "It's not so bad here. We have a salary, health insurance, a food card and we get some extras in case we need to go overtime.

- Overtime? - She nods her head yes and takes a bite of food into her mouth.

- 'Sometimes I make almost two thousand a month in overtime alone.

- Wow! - I say with disdain. I'm not sneering, but two thousand a month doesn't even begin to pay off the debts my father left behind. Not to mention rent and everyday bills. I mentally snort. And then there's my mother, who can't be left alone. I'll have to think about where to leave her during the day while I'm at work.

- 'Did you only bring this for lunch? - Anne asks, waking me up.

- 'Actually, I didn't know you were starting today.

- Got it. If you want I can share mine with you.

- No need, Anne, thank you! Actually, I'm not very hungry at the moment.

In the second shift it was hard to keep my concentration. I was worried about Dona Sara, the fact that I was alone at home and I couldn't even call Mila our neighbor to ask her to watch her until I got back. However, I was able to distance myself from the problems that have taken my sleep every night since everything turned upside down. The creditors knocking on my door wanting to collect the money my father owes them, or the latest letter from the bank giving me an ultimatum to pay off the mortgage on the house. As I couldn't pay anything we were evicted and they confiscated everything of value I had. Except my savings, which is almost gone.

- Wow, you look wonderful! - I hiss in awe at Emma who has emerged into my field of vision wearing a black dress that clings to her body in a sensual way and makeup that highlights her dark eyes. She runs her hands under her thick, curly hair and shakes it out.

- She's heading to Tecno's Kiss nightclub. Emma is a dancer at night. - Anne explains, as the brunette slaps on some purple-red lipstick.

- Ah!" is all I can say.

- "Yeah, you can't live on a scullery maid's salary. - Emma grumbles and slings a shiny shoulder bag over her shoulder. I just think she's right, though, I had no idea. Throughout my teens and early twenties I always had everything in my hands and my family was happy, so I was content with that. How did everything change so radically overnight? That's a question I ask myself every day.

- I'm coming! - I say after changing clothes and the girls wave a finger wave to me.

Evy. "Your name, please!" "Evy Dixon." "Alright, Evy! We have an opening in the pantry. It's quite different from what your resume showcases, but..." I inhale deeply. The truth is, I've pounded the pavement and sent resumes all over this city, and nothing. And the worst part? I can't afford to wait any longer. I need a job, and I needed it yesterday! "Okay, I'll take it!" "Are you sure?" "Unfortunately, I don't have much choice. I urgently need a job and a paycheck." I muster a smile for the woman behind the employment agency counter. "Alright! I'll jot down the address for you and notify D'Angelo that you'll be filling the position." "Thank you, Dany!" After she records the details, I exit the building and head straight for D'Angelo Corporation. A position at one of the country's premier accounting and management firms would be an unparalleled opportunity for my career. Serving coffee, tidying counters, and tables weren't what I had envisioned, but for today, it works wonders

Evy. "She's asleep now," Mary speaks as soon as I drop my bag on the sofa. "Thank you, Mary! You don't know how worried I've been about her today," I whisper, feeling tired. "I knew you had gone job hunting, and when I realized you hadn't come back home, I assumed you'd found something." I smile. "Yes. It's not much, but it'll help us." "That's good, dear. And what about her?" I let out an audible sigh. "I still don't know, Mary. Could you look after her while I go back home?" "I can do that for a few days, dear, but you know Judy needs special care." "Yeah, I know. But with what I'll earn, it'll barely cover the bills and food for us. How will I afford a clinic?" I grumble disheartened. "Dear, you could place her in a nursing home. Just... until things improve." I feel suffocated just hearing that suggestion, but I know I won't have another choice. "I promise I'll consider it carefully, Mary." The sweet lady forces a smile at me. "Alright, dear! I left some macaroni in the

Evy, Later tonight... I open the front door eagerly anticipating a long bath, craving to devour dinner, and then simply collapse into my bed. However, upon seeing Mary standing in my living room with a pitying expression, my energy renews, and I hurry towards the second room down the narrow hallway. I stop, frozen, as I spot my mother sitting at the edge of her bed, rocking back and forth, her gaze distant. "She's not doing well today," Mary comments, coming to a stop beside me. "What happened?" She lets out an audible sigh. "I don't know. Judy simply refused to take her meds and started saying she was seeing her father in the room. I tried to calm her down, but she wouldn't stop screaming, and when she finally did, she became like this." "Damn it, Mary, why didn't you call me?" "And disrupt your second day of work?" "But, Mary, she's my mother!" "Yes, I know. And you need that job to help her." I exhale sharply and move closer to my mother. I place my hands on her shoulders,

Gael "There he is!" Paul, my personal advisor, says as he enters my office. His spontaneous cheerfulness makes me roll my eyes because I know he's expecting good news from my last family meeting. Being born in the golden cradle of D'Angelo brings some very, very good things: success, money, hot women and the extravagance of parties, although it has its downside too. Women always look at you as if you were a huge pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. You don't have the freedom to come and go, and you have the weight of an empire on your shoulders. "So how did it go there? Are you more of a millionaire than you were yesterday, or..." I laugh sarcastically. "You're not going to believe this, but my mom left a demand in her will. Can you believe she demanded a marriage with love and all the frills possible?" "Holy shit!" she grumbles and pulls up a chair to sit down. "What was she thinking?" "She wants to punish me, simply to impose her will on me. Something she hasn't managed to do

Gael. Hours later... I enter the house to its usual silence and, after getting rid of my tie, I go to the corner bar and pour myself a generous shot of whisky. Afterwards, I approach a glass wall and observe the streets with their bright lights and the bridges that seem to wrap around the city. You can't hear anything from here, everything seems too quiet, but the chaotic traffic says otherwise. I take another sip of my drink and decide to go up to the second floor of the penthouse, and then to the master bedroom. I take a long shower, put on some comfortable clothes and call the hotel restaurant to order my dinner. While I'm waiting, I lock myself in the office and open D'Angelo's accounting minutes. A few months ago we discovered that our chief accountant was carrying out some petty theft in the company. Of course, I demanded secrecy on the matter, because I didn't want my name in the tabloid gossip, let alone to be seen as a weak and inattentive businessman. That's exactly why P

Evy "Good morning, my name is Evy! Mr. D’Ang..." "Of course, Mr. D'Angelo is expecting you!" I don't reciprocate the secretary's cordial smile as she kindly opens the door for me because I'm so nervous I don't even know how to react at this moment. What could I do, beg not to be fired? Humiliate myself so he might take pity on me? No! My father always taught us that we should have some integrity, and if I have to stay in this job, it will be by acknowledging my mistakes and fixing them the best I can. And if he doesn't accept me into his company, I'll find another job, right? Damn it, it's not that easy, Evy! You're desperate, that's a fact! I enter an extremely spacious and well-lit office and can't help but notice the details of the light furniture in perfect contrast with the black and charcoal gray décor. Behind an imposing mahogany desk sits a man too young for such an important position. Dark-skinned, square-faced, with a stubble that made him look masculine and piercing. His

Evy — Evy, are you okay?" Wendy asks with concern as soon as I enter the pantry. I ignore her worry and head straight to my boss's office, and as I walk in, Dylan stands up from his chair. He doesn't hide a worried look and immediately comes over to me. "Evy, what's wrong?!" Without hesitation, I rush into his arms and cry there for some time until I feel relieved. I sense him gently patting my back, and when I finally compose myself, I step away from his embrace, feeling embarrassed. "I'm sorry for that, Dylan," I say, avoiding eye contact. "No need to apologize, dear. Do you want to talk about what happened?" Although I desperately need to confide in someone, I shake my head. "Can you let me off for today? I'm sorry, I just can't work!" He exhales audibly. "Just because I can see you're not doing well, but you'll have to make up for it tomorrow," he says. I agree with another nod. "I promise! Thank you, Dylan!" I immediately leave his office and the building minutes later. As

Evy "Miss Dixon?" A female voice said as soon as I answered the call. "Yes, who is this?" "My name is Chloe. I'm Mr. D’Angelo's secretary, and I'm calling to let you know that I'll be sending a package to your address in a few hours." I furrow my brow. "What package?" I inquire. "Tonight, a driver will pick you up. Be ready!" Damn it, why do they need to make everything so mysterious?! I exhale deeply through my mouth, and just as I think of pressing on with my questions, the call ends. Idiots! I grumble inwardly and head back to my shower. An hour and a half later, the doorbell starts ringing, and upon opening the door, I'm met by a man in a delivery uniform. He simply hands me a large white box and extends a paper for me to sign. Once inside, driven by curiosity, I lift the lid of the box and push aside the tissue papers to find an exquisite long black dress and a pair of high heels. I scoff sarcastically. Who does he think he is? I curiously notice a small envelope at the botto

Evy After signing the contract with Mr. D'Angelo, everything in my life began to happen as if by magic. A call from the bank informed me that the mortgage on the house where I was born and raised had been paid off, the creditors who had simply vanished from my doorstep, and my mother who had been transferred to a specialized private oncology clinic. Finally, I could breathe a sigh of relief! The next steps would be timed. D'Angelo and I would have a photo session narrating our "love story," and his assistant would handle the rumors surrounding the coveted "Lion of Business" wedding. In the end, he looked into my eyes and said, "Get ready for the best part!" I wondered if there was anything better than laying my head on the pillow and sleeping without tears, without regrets, and without thinking about the next day. Surely, there wouldn't be. "Ready, your mother is settled in now. Can we talk?" Dr. Monique Toledo approached, pulling me from my reverie. I glanced at the door she had jus
