From the elevator, Jeremy steps on the 49th floor, which is solely for him as he's the one occupying the biggest and most expensive unit in Tiffany Blue. It's the most famous students' condominium in the area just across from the prestigious and prominent Fermone National University where he, Chris, Ken and Gail attend.
At first, Jeremy used to live alone but because Chris and Ken would always hang out and sleep over in his place, he told them to just move out from their own units and live with him. That was what the two guys had really wanted to happen because ever since Jeremy lost his mom, they couldn’t stop worrying about him.
He sighs as he enters the unit. The spacious living room welcomes him with a picturesque overlooking view, but such a majestic and stunning sight fails to calm him. He's been troubled since yesterday.
From the hallway, he drags his heavy feet and reaches the guest room. Another sigh from him, deeper this time. He knocks on the door, and it opens right away. The girl before him can't smile nor say a word, for she's totally nervous and uncomfortable. She leaves the door with haste, then stands at the foot of the bed.
Jeremy reluctantly follows her inside, and as soon as he faces her, he hands her the black dress.
She stares at it.
“That’s what you were wearing that night,” Jeremy says, looking at her intently. “Serin Blyth. That’s the name embroidered on the back collar of your dress. At first, I thought it was a clothing brand but I confirmed it’s not.”
She looks at Jeremy only to stare at the black dress again, for she can't meet his eyes. They are grave and intimidating.
“You do have a name if the basis is your black dress,” he continues. “But the private investigator who had done a background check on you found out that you don’t have a legal identity here.”
Overly shocked, she freezes on her feet.
“With your situation right now, you don’t have a choice but to stay with us.” Jeremy waits for her to voice out her opinion but she looks tense, shocked, confused, troubled and uncomfortable to do it, so he turns around to give her the space that she needs.
“I’m deeply sorry for making you go through a lot since that night,” she finally breaks her long silence.
Jeremy turns to her again.
She lifts her head, meeting his eyes with a bit of boldness to sincerely express her gratitude towards him. “Thank you so much.. I don’t know how I can repay you for everything but I will really work hard while I’m here. If you allow me to, I can do part-time jobs also to compensate you immediately. Staying here longer will keep inconveniencing you and your friends, so I better leave here soon.”
But leaving soon without getting her memory back and answering his piled-up questions about her haunting identity would agitate him more, Jeremy gets frustrated all of a sudden. His grave and cold expression becomes a piercing stare. “Why did you call me Heron that night?”
Though Serin really can’t remember what happened that night and all the events prior to that, she is sure that the person Heron is related to her. It's the name she was crying out in her sleep last night. But she can’t tell Jeremy about it, worried it would distress him more. By the look on his face now, Heron could also be related to him. Or could be someone who has caused him so much pain.
Jeremy stares at her more piercingly. “For your sake and for my peace of mind, squeeze your memory to remember even just a bit.”
She avoids his eyes that are like balls of fires now. “I'm.. so.. sorry.. I really can’t remember anything.”
“I know I should believe Dr. David but what if you’re only pretending to have completely lost your memory??” He stands close to her.
She stiffens close to him, and because there is no more space behind her as she’s already touching the edge of the bed, she just closes her eyes.
“Look at me.” So out of it, Jeremy firmly holds her shoulders. He knows he shouldn’t be treating Serin this way but her haunting identity keeps agitating him. “I said, look at me.”
Serin can’t. Apart from the obvious fact that she feels extremely tense, she is also in so much pain due to the never healing deep cut on her right shoulder. Something Jeremy has already forgotten due to stress and frustration.
“Look at me and tell me boldly that you were just blurting out a random name that night.. That you were not really calling me Heron..” Without noticing it, he tightens his grip on her shoulders.
With such unbearable pain, Serin suddenly lands seated on the edge of the bed, clutching on it to suppress her torment. But Jeremy can’t see her suffering, blinded by his own anguish.
He bends down and leans over her, hands still pressed on her shoulders. It is too much now, the pain is already killing Serin. She cries in silence. This knocks total sense into Jeremy. As he quickly lets go of his strong grip on her shoulders, Serin opens her tearful eyes, making him see a scenario in them. He can't be wrong. It is so clear it's really a scenario.
He is with a girl he can’t recognize, holding her hands. And while the two of them are walking on a beautiful road filled with autumn leaves, the smiles on their faces are never fading. They are dazzling in pure bliss. But then, that scenario changes. He’s now seeing himself alone on a road with traces of heavy rain. He looks devastated while crying on his knees. And what shocks and terrifies him extremely is the sight of blood scattered all over his hands.
He steps back so panickedly he almost loses his balance, but his torment continues when he sees Serin faint on the bed. Her right shoulder is excessively bleeding.
Two weeks later.
Jeremy comes rushing and heads straight to the hallway leading to the guest room when Chris suddenly blocks him midway to stop him from confronting Serin again. He shows Chris his phone right away. On the screen is the email Jeremy just received. It is the result of the forensic examination on the deep cut on Serin’s right shoulder, stating that it is not a gunshot nor a stab wound but from an arrowhead based on its depth and shape.
Chris swallows hard upon reading the email. “Okay bro. I admit it’s really shocking because who uses such a weapon nowadays? But please give yourself and Serin a break. Stop confronting her again and again. Can’t you just wait for her to regain her memory?”
Jeremy knows it. That the sudden changes in his behavior have been deeply troubling his two best friends. He has become short-tempered when in fact, he’s known for being calm and patient. And worse is, he’s always harsh towards Serin, both in his words and actions.
“Jeremy, we do understand where you’re coming from. Anyone in your situation would feel seriously stressed but I’m sure you know that it is not right that you keep forcing Serin to remember even just a little. She really has amnesia, she’s not faking it, bro.” Chris looks at his best friend with eyes begging him to listen to him this time.
But as expected, unsettling stress defeats Jeremy, especially that Serin’s identity is becoming insanely haunting. “I better feed her head with these things about her. In that way, she might remember just a bit.” He continues walking.
“She’s not in her room though.”
Jeremy turns to Chris. “Where is she??”
“At Campbell Park.”
Wordless, Jeremy leaves the house and races all the way to the park just across the building. As he reaches the rows of benches under the tunnel of big trees, he spots Serin right away. But he steps back all of a sudden. He has just changed his mind, for he can’t dare steal her temporary solitude. However, Serin already sees him from a distance, making her leave the bench in a rush. Uneasy again and without looking at Jeremy, she hurries back to Tiffany Blue.
“Miss, I’m telling you you’re getting lost.” It’s Gail, suddenly blocking Serin in the middle of the hallway while staring at her insultingly. “Don’t you know that this entire floor is for Jeremy Sean only?”
“I know.” She sidesteps.
But Gail stands in her way again. “Then why the hell are you still here? Should I call the guards or I will just drag you–”
“What took you so long?” Jeremy shows up from the elevator and walks to the two girls in the middle of the hallway.
Gail is sure that the question is never for her because she’s here to visit Jeremy without informing him. Meanwhile, Serin is so sure that it is for Gail until Jeremy stands right next to her and looks at her affectionately.
“I’d been waiting for you,” he tells her.
Serin gulps in surprise, speechless.
“I didn’t know you’re friends with..” Someone who is not on their level, Gail almost blurts out an insult to Serin. “Well..” She smiles at Jeremy, flirting in a way. “I thought she was getting lost, that’s why I had to--”
“She's not getting lost,” Jeremy cuts her off coldly. “And it's not her but you are the one who shouldn't be here.”
Gail freezes, not only by the coldness she is taking from her childhood friend but also by what she has just heard from him. “But why?? We are–”
Jeremy cuts her off again with a colder stare. “You must stop coming here from now on. I hate to discomfort my girlfriend.” He turns to Serin and holds her hand lovingly.
Though Serin gets so flustered she stiffens like a statue, she is quick enough to hide her shock. Gail does the same and acts like she’s really happy for Jeremy. “Oh my god! Our beloved Jeremy Sean already has a girlfriend? Wow! Congrats to you then!”Jeremy just nods at her. “Oh! I forgot! I have to meet someone in the lobby. Gotta go now.” More lies. Gail throws Serin a bitter smile. “Let’s hang out soon, okay?” Hurting deep inside, she excuses herself and almost flies out of the hallway. At the closing of the elevator door, Jeremy immediately drops Serin’s hand and hurries back to his place, as if nothing happened. Serin can’t believe he leaves just like that without hearing a ‘thank you’ or at least an apology from him for using her as a fake girlfriend to shoo Gail away. Upset, she follows him. “I’m sorry to say this but you have already crossed the line, Sir Jeremy.” But he plays deaf, pushing Serin to block his way. As they face each other, he looks away with obvious haste,
“We’re sorry, bro.”Jeremy looks at Ken with confusion, still panting and sweating from the night jog. “What are you sorry for?”“We already told Serin the reason you can’t let her go yet,” Ken answers straight to the point. “Because of that, she tried drawing your face to know if the sketch you found in her dress pocket is really hers. And it’s really hers, we just confirmed it.”A terrible feeling rushes in, Jeremy begins to feel nauseous and sweat more coldly. He wants to leave now but he can’t move at all.“Look.” Chris shows him the new sketch. Overly shocked, Jeremy can’t compose himself anymore. It’s freaking insane that the new sketch he is looking at is exactly the same as the one he’s keeping when Serin hasn’t even seen it yet. He falls into deep silence. “But bro, you should stop overthinking now.” Ken pats Jeremy on his arm, smiling at him with relief. “The sketch is not you but Heron.”Jeremy freezes completely, and all the colors on his face quickly fade. He never tells
Everyone gets speechless because Jeremy is never the type who would cause a commotion or do something to get people’s attention. But he just did. All the guests gather around them, and even the loud music stops blaring. Ken hurriedly gets in between Jeremy and the tipsy guy while Chris gently pulls Serin to his side. She is on the verge of tears. Jeremy holds her hand. “Let’s go.”“She can’t fucking leave!!” Gail comes rushing, flaring eyes on Serin. “How dare you ruin my party??” She lifts her hand but Jeremy is quick enough to block her from attacking Serin, making her yell at him. “Move!”But Jeremy remains still, protecting Serin from her. Gail stares at him so angrily her eyes could blaze. “Can’t you see, Jeremy?? She is ruining my–”“Serin isn’t ruining your party,” Ken cuts her off, no longer keeping his cool, “but your your fuck boy guest.”“Are you kidding me?” The tipsy guy scoffs. “That wench was the one who–”“You must have a death wish.” Ken throws him a warning glare.
Serin can tell right away that the girl is not okay, for she’s shaking and sobbing fearfully. She tries to calm her the best way she can, holding her cold, trembling hands. “I’m here, miss.. You’re okay now. Don’t be scared anymore. What is it? Please tell me..”Yenny cries silently but more fearfully. “P..Please.. h..help--”“It’s getting colder, let’s get inside now.” A man’s voice interrupts. Serin turns to where the eerie voice comes from and sees a tall man through the gaps of wide fences of the European-styled mansion behind him. He is standing in the front yard that is so dim and gloomy, for the only glow illuminating there is from the golden lights circling the big fountain in the garden. “We’ll catch a cold if we stay here longer,” the creepy man tells Yenny. Serin catches on. The girl before her is definitely in danger. “I will help you,” she tells her, looking deep into her frightened eyes. “First, we have to get out of here. Let’s--”But Yenny suddenly steps back. It ju
It is really here, Serin can’thelp but feel a lot more nervous the moment she arrives at her destination. The European-styled mansion towering her in broad daylight looks even bigger because the first time she has seen it was already nighttime. She walks to the huge gate nervously and rings someone’s number. Her call is answered immediately, and after a minute, an old lady welcomes her with a smile so warm it somehow melts her worry and uneasiness away. “I’m glad you arrived here safely.” It’s Ms. Fei, the old lady managing the household. “Good morning,” Serin greets her politely. “I’m pleased to finally meet you in person.”“It’s very nice to meet you as well.” Ms. Fei gives her a more welcoming smile and walks her through the luxurious front yard. Everything around looks grand and beautiful. The entire landscape and the mansion itself define wealth and elegance. Serin does feel small and impressed but what consumes her more is the feeling of depressing gloom surrounding the place
Two months ago. It was the day of Gail’s party.Lunch time, seven hours before that night, Dave finally decided to get rid of something. A medium-sized box on his huge bookshelf. “Go to a very far place where no one can see you, and please burn this.” Dave handed the box to Yenny. “I’ve been keeping that for 3 years now, and I think it’s best to finally get rid of that box through someone I trust the most. And it’s you.”Yenny nodded in response, but with a puzzled expression because she was sure it was Jeremy Dave trusted the most and not her. Also, it was the first time in four years that he had allowed someone to touch his personal things because after his mom passed away, he became extremely agitated about it. “Make sure you won’t tell anyone about it.” Dave gave her an anxious look. She couldn’t help but feel uneasy. Why would he want her to burn the box in a very far place? And why shouldn’t she tell anyone about it? However, she couldn’t ask him these questions. Dave’s condit
Dave was right, that Jeremy wouldn’t go straight to Gail’s party because no one in their house had answered his calls. He knew him very well, and because of that, he could always deceive him so conveniently. “It’s time to act again.” Dave smirked as he walked to his bed. He would pretend he’s already sleeping.Downstairs, the deafening silence began to haunt Jeremy. It was unusually quiet. He rocketed to the third floor and reached his dad’s room. His dad was already deep in his sleep. Though he wanted to feel good about his dad sleeping soundly, he couldn’t, for it’s very suspicious. Next, he went to Ms. Fei’s room. Like his dad, the old lady was already sleeping. He felt more uneasy because after he moved to another city for college, the old woman wouldn’t go to bed yet unless she would see him park his car outside whenever he would go home. Sighing, he fixed her blanket and left quietly. Outside Yenny’s room, he knocked on the door a few times until decided to open it. As expecte
Yenny did see hope, running into Serin, but the important evidence to lock Dave in prison was not with her, for she had completely forgotten her bag in the storage room. As she failed to escape, she hurried back to the mansion and left Serin outside. Two hours later. “How are you?” It was Chris asking Serin as soon as he and Ken came inside her room. Serin faked a soft smile. “I’m okay now.” But the two guys could see a troubled expression glimpsing on her face, for she was unable to help the girl in Horizon Town. “You don’t look okay though,” Ken said. That’s when Serin plucked her courage to tell them the truth. Chris hurriedly took out his phone, showed her a group photo on it and pointed at Yenny who was all smiles standing beside Jeremy. “Is this the girl you’re talking about?” Chris asked Serin nervously. A week before Gail’s party, Chris showed Serin the same photo while he was excitedly talking about Yenny. Their close friend Serin was supposed to meet at Gail’s party.
“Serin spoke in her sleep twice and during those moments, I vanished in the palace and appeared here in this present time. She must be wandering in her dreams, that’s what I am thinking right now.”Whirling emotions, Jeremy was having the same thoughts. Events that involved Serin’s dreams suddenly reappeared in his clear memory. On the night of his 18th birthday, he found Serin on Desf Road. He heard her call him Heron and when he was about to carry him, she longingly touched his face and painfully uttered, “Heron, you’re alive. I’m glad you’re alive.” Those were the same exact words that came out from her in her sleep before Sodon vanished in the past and was brought here in this present time.Jeremy could also remember the day he and Serin had a heated confrontation just because she went out of his condo unit without telling him. When they clashed for the first time, while her
When Jeremy began to notice that Dave had been treating him completely different from how he used to, he already knew why. Slowly getting closer to Serin, Dave had been falling for Serin. Criminal, that torturing word. The moment Dave uttered that word, his heart agonizingly broke. His confession, in an instant, took him to that gruesome and haunting night when he was nothing but a horrible monster.Year 2009, the night of his younger brother’s 14th birthday when he thought that his mom was busy in the kitchen preparing for the surprise birthday dinner for Jeremy. While he was in his room, suddenly the door opened.Dave’s body froze when he got caught using illegal drugs. With his mom’s widened eyes, both of them got completely shocked. His extreme nervousness made him throw the drugs in a rush, hands were quivering.Total gloom darkened Leona Sean’s face. Her steps towards her son got heavier. That phone call, in an instant, darkened his bright day. He was sure who was on the other line. That voice, he knew it.That was him, the old man whom he ran into Campbell Park across Tiffany Blue the night when odd occurrences terribly knocked him with shocking terror and absurd affliction. That was nine years ago but Jeremy could still remember him as clear as day. But that was not the first and last time their paths crossed.Five years ago, that old man suddenly showed up on Desf Road and gave him the black silk thread bracelet. And even until now, how that old man quickly disppeared before his sight on that endless and empty road still bothered him. When that old man called him Heron from the other line, for the first time in so many years, that name began to haunt him again. Like flashes of lightning that suddenly disturbed the tranquil dark sky, strikes of overwhelming fear started to frighten him.Jeremy sped up.
Serin suddenly woke up. That scenario in her dream was filled with strange familiarity. That mountain. That sword. That guy. Those men on horses. That old man.She could not help but feel like she had already seen them before, not in her dreams but in real life.In haste, she left the bed and walked straight to the closet. As soon as she opened it, she got her black dress.Looking at the embroidered name on the back collar, she felt sudden pain. She did have a name but her identity had remained mysterious. Her memory was still completely empty.Eyes locked on her black
'I'm glad that you're finally here.. right next to me.' It was like a sweet tune to her heart. Serin flashed a warm smile. The pouring rain became a beautiful shower in her teary eyes.No more hesitation, Jeremy fearlessly faced her. The girl, who was standing before him, had given him unfeigned strength during his silent battles. He had yearned for her which felt like forever. Every day and every night, he had waited for this moment. If it's just a dream, he did not want to wake up. But Jeremy was not dreaming, it's real. He was looking into Serin's beautiful eyes."Welcome back. It's nice to see you again." He was floating in a surge of profound happiness. Words alone could not describe what he was feeling at the moment.Serin exchanged tearful smiles with him. Her heart was also exclaiming in unexplainable delight. All those shared moments with him flashed back. From the first time their longing eyes met to the saddest day they p

Five years ago."I will send you the exact address, sir." A male voice said on the other line."You have done such a great job. I will call you if I need something. Thank you." Dave ended the phone call. Nervousness began to tremble him while hurrying downstairs.Carl, the private detective that he had hired, managed to find Yenny in just four weeks. As soon as he walked past the living room, someone, who was comfortably sitting on the luxuriously-looking sofa, caught his eyes. He stopped walking. 'What is she doing here?'"Hi, Dave!" Gail greeted him. She rose up from sitting and walked to where he was standing. She was displaying her beautiful smile. "Where are you going? You must be in a rush.""What brings you here?" He asked coldly."You still have the courage to show up this house after you caused a scene here a month ago?" Jeremy showed up. He was talking about the nig
Gail simpered. "You think you can fool me??" Gail thought that Dave was just fooling around to tease her since he already knew that she had feelings for Jeremy."What if she really likes my brother, will you do something?""I won't do anything because that's not true and that will never happen." There was certainty in her voice. "Since when did you become fond of playing jokes on someone? She let out a heavy sigh. "Driving for almost three hours now must bore you. If boredom is killing you, play some music. Stop spitting non-sense.""What will I get if I play a joke on you?" He sounded so serious while his eyes were focused on driving.Gail looked at him. How his face plastered seriousness could tell that he was no longer teasing her. That's what Gail felt but the truth was, Dave was only acting. He had to fake seriousness in his voice and expression to persuade her that he was telling the truth.
